I am an Australian poet, critic & independent scholar. I studied English, History & Philosophy at Sydney University, before completing via external/part-time studies a Master of Letters (intellectual history) at University of New England, & a Doctor of Creative Arts (poetry) at University of Wollongong. For many years I worked as a sports/outdoor education instructor, but now exist full-time in reading & writing. I live in a tiny home with my knight in shining brindle, a greyhound ex-racer named Billy-Blue. I read poetry (especially contemporary), classics, mythology/fantasy/magic realism, & philosophy (mainly around such obsessions as ethics, aesthetics, consciousness & free-will). When I am not reading or smooching with Billy-Blue, I am listening to music (classical, klezmer, flamenco, jazz & bluegrass) or dreaming of things to write. I have currently published three poetry collections & a chapbook, with a verse-novel forthcoming sometime next year. I like to share & be inspired.

You are such a warm, honest, charismatic and welcoming figure on Book tube You're one of only very very few booktubers who welcomed me into the community and I appreciate this so much and remember such kindness. A fab video. Your enthusiasm and love of books and reading is always so inspiring. Wishing you and the beautiful Billy Blue the best Christmas ❤😊keep being brilliant! Ollie.
Oh, my goodness. Thank you, Ollie. This is gold.
I am so touched. I've been a bit low of late, & then you bless me - thank you.
Can you hear me properly? I have become aware of a volume problem in my videos.
Now you’ve piqued my curiosity about Brendan Ryan. Wait till Easter, eh? I hope that you will share with us after publication. Now you’ve got me thinking about Cornish tin. 🤔 Some beautiful Folios you’ve got there, Phillip. Bring on the shirts! 😂
haha...
Yes, I'm so lucky to have this job with Recent Work Press. It's one of the things really keeping me well. I am very lucky.
Ah, my brand new shirts, I am such a dork.
Is the volume ok?
I have just started Frankenstein... very interesting so far! And The Cthulhu Mythos is huge... and much is set here in NZ! Happy New Year!
Are you serious? The Lovecraft is set in NZ? I am astounded. Thanks for sharing this. Another reason to give this a go.
Ah, I love 'Frankenstein', can't wait to read it again.
Thanks for stopping by, Mark - much appreciated!

@@apoetreadstowrite A tad low, but I managed to hear it... I use headphones so they help.
You have a very nice selection of books behind you Philip!
Ah, my addiction to The folio Society from London. These treasures feature in many of my videos.
Thank you for the shoutout! I am truly enjoying following along on your Gothic and horror journey.
Oh, thank you for stopping by, & always being so encouraging & affirmative. I am loving Shirley Jackson.
And, I think I've got my volume problem sorted, so all good for my next video. Hope you have a great year end & new year.
Thanks for your candour, it’s refreshing and you never know i might just give this a go, i don’t do that many tags, but if one catches my eye i will, so feel free to tag me from time to time 🎉 Really enjoying spending time with you on your channel!
Alright, wonderful. I don't do a lot of tags, just when they catch my fancy, I suppose. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I am a confessional poet, & I started this BookTube channel to keep my publisher happy, but I have been ambushed with joy & community. I am loving it. Do you have any exciting reading plans to end out the year? How are you finding UA-cam?

@@Bookishtravels1: That is wonderful. I really look forward to continuing this bookish connection.

So nice to see you enjoying your books, i recently bought ‘the woman in black’ i think by Susan Hill have you read that?
No, I haven't, it's good? I am very new to horror. I have always loved Neo-Romanticism & the Gothic Imagination, but I've never read or watched horror. I won't get into gore, but am really enjoying this classic horror.
Oh i love your t shirt, got to love Scooby doo ☺️ What some great shout outs 🎉 Love your personality and energy in your videos. I do enjoy a gothic horror from time to time ☺️
Thank you. Yes, I thought it added to the 'Gothic' scene. Scobby-Doo, & my Billy-Blue, two of the loves of my life.

Having just finished the book earlier today, I can especially appreciate your thoughts on the book. I love seeing your bookmarks. I do have some bookmarks. But I do sometimes fall back on using receipts as bookmarks
I love your channel, & our bookish adventure, so it was a great joy to acknowledge the inspiration you have given me to begin my adventure into the world of horror. Thank you, Stuart.

Ah, you are a gem, Albert!
The old Scooby Doo is such fun, isn't it?
Do you have some exciting reading plans to end out your year? I hope you have a wonderful festive season.
@apoetreadstowrite Indeed I do. One is historical fiction about a young woman becoming a Radio City Rockette (Christmas related). The other is Peter Pan. The tragic backstory of author JM Barrie had a clear influence 😥
@@AlbertTheConjugator: Ah, they sound great. I look forward to your video review of them both. Have a wonderful festive season, Albert!
Lovely bookmarks! I used to try to keep some nicer ones but they often mysteriously disappeared when my kids were quite little. They are still young but a bit bigger so maybe they would be better about it now haha, we'll see. Thanks for sharing your lovely spirit again!
You're a gem, Seanin. Thanks for sticking with me, & encouraging me. I know I can be indiscreet with my views on things at times, I am working on it.
Yes, & who would have thought of a tag focussed on bookmarks? It was so whimsical I couldn't resist.
I really want some Agatha Christie Folio books 🎉 Lovely looking books, i’m wondering what the hieroglyph book is on your shelf 😁 Love your enthusiasm, shall come again!
Ah, so lovely to meet you, & thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it.
The hieroglyph book is also a Folio Society wonder. It is Howard Carter's journals of his discovery of the Tutankhamen tomb, with an accompanying book with full page spread colour photos of artefacts found in the tomb. It is a miraculous thing. This two-volume treat features in one of my videos on 'my beautiful books'. I am addicted to The Folio Society. They feature in many of my videos.

Great video! Also, I enjoyed seeing your bookmarks. I am looking forward to your future videos as you continue reading these great gothic works.
Thanks for always being so affirmative & encouraging. Yes, I am really enjoying this adventure into the world of horror. It has really surprised me. It's not a genre I ever expected to get into. I won't read gore, but I am enjoying this classic gothic & psychological thriller.
Thanks for stopping by, Jenny. Have you some interesting reading plans to end out the year? Some exciting project?
@apoetreadstowrite Maybe. I don't know. I am trying not to burn out. Making these videos this past month has kind of made me very tired. I am just piecing things together. But will have some time off around the holidays to regroup or power up or something.

Thanks, Mark. I'll work on the volume problem. I think I have a faulty connection lead. I am so non-techy, it worries me.
Oh, & thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate your encouragement.
The Folio Society needs to hire you for their marketing team already! In all seriousness I have to have that beautiful edition now. Also I hope you remake this video when your audio is fixed, this is the sort of review that should go viral.
Ah, you are so encouraging, Emily - thank you. Yes, I think I have a faulty connection lead. I'll get it fixed before my next video.
And, thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate your kind encouragement. Glad you enjoyed the video content.
My videos won't go viral for a little while, I suspect, I have been too forthright about my politics, and battles with religion & mental health. It's ok though, I'll carry on, my publisher is happyish with my video viewer numbers, so I think I'm safe for my next book. Ah, it's all fun & games. I don't know why I have to be so indiscreet, it's a pickle, anyway...
@@apoetreadstowriteThe fact that your publisher is happy-ish shows you're on the right track, and I'm sure your authenticity resonates with your audience in ways that really matter. Awww, precious puppy ❤ I really enjoyed this novel and Shirley Jackson overall. Her writing style is definitely one you need to accept and go with it or else you won’t enjoy the story.
Ah, my Billy-Blue, he really is the love of my life. I've been lucky then, perhaps, I am totally seduced by Jackson's writing style, I think her writing is utterly majestic. King is one of my favorite writers. I actually wrote my thesis on four of his women characters. I'm looking forward to following your venture into his works. You did a fantastic job discussing and analyzing The Turn of the Screw. The ambiguity of the story makes it a fascinating topic for discussion and analysis. Mike Flanagan's series are fantastic. He also did a Netflix series titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is an adaptation of The Turn of the Screw. I think you would enjoy it, too. The taboo against openly discussing struggles with mental health issues is incredibly destructive and I appreciate your openness about your own ups and downs. I know what you mean about having those negative thoughts always lurking there in the back of your mind no matter how good things are going and it's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who struggles with that. And thanks for stopping by - very, very nice.
@ no problem at all 💙
@@NicolesBookishNook: Thanks, Nicole.
Your enthusiasm is so contagious! I really want to read Shirley Jackson now and this other story too. I used to read Anne Rice and some horror goth stuff when I was a teenager but then I lost interest as I got older. I think I would like to get back to this genre of writing. I think I missed out on Shirley.
I won't read gore, but am enjoying this classic Gothic, It's fun - very interesting.
Thanks for this lovely & encouraging response to my video, & thanks for stopping by, really appreciate this bookish connection.
Terrific video, Phillip. I enjoyed your thoughts about The Turn of the Screw. I just re-read it again myself for Victober. I think I have always read the novel as more of a psychological study of the governess. It's wonderfully inconclusive and leaves us wondering, but I tend to come down on the side that this is all taking place in the governess' mind. She has been told by the children's uncle that she must deal with everything herself and never contact him. She finds herself frequently imagining the uncle, fantasizing about him watching her and approving of her care for the children. I tend to think that she imagines the entire haunting so that she can fulfill the role of the savior of the children. Of course, it does not quite work out that way. It's a fascinating psychological portrait , I think. I'm so glad that you are enjoying your ventures into gothic literature, Phillip.
Thanks for sharing these insights, Pat. Yes, it took me a little time to tune my ear to James' writing style, but I came to like it. It's a complex novella of remarkable ambience, isn't it? I'm so glad that I've come to it, & Gothic. This BookTube is a wonderful lark.
Thanks for stopping by, Pat - this BookTube is so enlarging & emboldening. I'm really enjoying it.
@@apoetreadstowrite I’m so glad.
@@apoetreadstowrite it’s interesting how interpretations of this novella have changed over time, too. When it was first published, I think it was generally read as a straightforward ghost story. But later interpretations began to look at the state of mind of the governess.
@@BookChatWithPat8668: Yes, I haven't looked at that, the reception of certain books over time is interesting, isn't it? Spiritualism was such a big thing in the time of James.
I just picked up The Turn of the Screw from a used book store recently. I look forward to reading it at some point! Can’t wait for your next video on this subject. Happy reading!
It took me a little while to get into 'The Turn of the Screw', always loved the title, but the writing style is a little odd at times, but once I tuned my ear to the rhythms, I fell in love with it.
Yes, I'm looking forward to reading more Shirley Jackson, & making more videos on her. I won't read gore, & will get back to my poetry soon, but a little more on Gothic will be fun.
I’m rather curious now to experience James’ prose style. I’ve heard it said that he influenced James Baldwin, whom I am reading now.
@@joshuacreboreads: you have me very Baldwin curious, must get to him. Once you tune your ear to James' prose style, it is a remarkable novel of compression & ambience. Not sure I'd want to read everything he ever wrote, but I'm glad I discovered this novel.
This is such a fun video and insights of gothic horror. I need to resd turning of the screw
It's a lot of fun - very interesting.
Thanks for stopping by. Really glad you enjoyed the video.
I'm glad you are liking your horror reading so much. I have We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I will try to read it soon before I watch your video about it
I can't believe how much I'm enjoying it. It is so much fun.
Thanks for the inspiration, Stuart.
What a great video! I loved both of them! I can’t wait for you to read Castle, another of my favorites. You are so much fun!
Oh, thank you, Meg. You are always so affirming & generous. Yes, I'm having a blast with this adventure into horror.
Have you see the teleseries adaptation of 'Hill House'?
@@apoetreadstowrite Wonderful!
@@apoetreadstowrite No , I haven’t, however both of my sons watched it and loved it and it prompted one of them to read the original novel, so yea!
@@booksoffthebeatenpath: thought you would have seen it. It’s remarkable, isn’t it?
Fascinating insight into Gothic and Horror for me as I never read those genre's. Thanks Phillip. I need to catch-up with some of your previous videos , i have been busy. M ☘
You are marvellous, Margaret. Thank you in advance. My backlog would love your company.
Yes, I've never read horror before, but I'm really enjoying it now. I won't read gore, but am engrossed with these classics of the Gothic. They are so richly evocative & dramatic. What are you reading at the moment? And how's the poetry collection going?
@@apoetreadstowrite I have a bunch of books going on...all Irish writers at this time. My poetry book is going well. I am currently preparing the next manuscript. I hope to get it to the editor before he goes on Retreat in February. It is difficult to remain cocooned and write, in these strange times that we are living through. I hope you are doing well Phillip. Weatherwise, it is a silver and blue morning here in Ireland. Heavy frost and bright sun. ☘
@: I’m so happy for you. Is your new manuscript a change in style, or a fulfilment of your current approaches? It’s a question I’m always curious about.
@@apoetreadstowrite well what I'm talking about is my poetry collection. But, yes I do have some prospects out there awaiting a reply to my short story query. I will let you know the outcomes.
If King recommends the Turning of the Screw then I should pay attention. Thanks for the insight into the book!
Yes, 'The Turn of the Screw' is quite remarkable, & King's insights on its impact are brilliant. He is such a supple literary critic.
I am so enjoying this journey into horror. I can't believe, now, that it's taken me so long to come to the party.
@@apoetreadstowrite I'm intrigued with 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle.'
@@book-ramble: Yes, I'm really looking forward to reading it next. Shirley Jackson is quite a revelation. This BookTube is so enlarging & emboldening. I love it.
@@book-ramble You still reading Plato? Or have you moved onto Aristotle now?
You seem pretty sensitive to me. 🤔
Haha thanks, David.
It is a remarkable novel, isn't it? Quite unforgettable - such a triumph of ambience.
So, after doing a bit of research, you may want to check out the movie "The Nightcomers". You can look at Wikipedia to see the summary.
Yikes "The Turn of the Screw" sounds quite scary. I'm not sure I'd be able to read it during the day let alone at night! Haha! Glad you enjoyed it, friend. :)
It is quite remarkable. I think, I quite love it - unforgettable.
Thanks for stopping by, Ted. It is a terrific read, if you wish to get to it one day. I don't find it 'scary' at all, but it is unforgettable.
Ah, those of you who have been asking for more Billy in my videos, at around the 25-minute mark, you will hear him get up out of his bed, do the famous greyhound shake & zoomy, earthquaking my phone camera for a moment, before settling back down in his bed. Gosh, I adore this hound!
Billy really has saved my life. I feel so lucky to share my life with him.
Please subscribe, comment & like, I really welcome engagement, & find much affirmative encouragement in it - thank you.

Wonderful of you to donate plasma! I have a diagnosis similar to yours. I attempted to take my life in 2017 and also spent time in an inpatient psych ward afterward. I'm in a much better place now, but it's a daily battle. I'm so incredibly thankful for my psychiatrist and therapist, and I'm also grateful for my support system and others like you who share their stories and are open about their struggles. Thank you so much for sharing your poem. Sending you lots of love!
Thanks for sharing this & for stopping by. I really appreciate this bookish connection.
I'm really glad you have support, & are going better today, mental health is a pickle. Yes, I love The Blood Bank. It's so important to me. Hope you now stay strong & creative. Keep well.
I'm so happy you're still being brilliant, intelligent and insightful (and inspirational). I'm currently being treated now too for my anxiety and have a mental health come to see me each week. I am also going to get a puppy after Christmas too (i[m going to call her Puddles). I've been thinking about it for a while now. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and sorry I've been away for a while. Ollie
You need to look after yourself first, Ollie. That is so exciting about your puppy. Billy has literally saved my life, I am so besotted with him, he is a miracle. I hope your Puddles foes the same for you. A dog is just so brimful with love & affection - amazing creatures. Really glad you are getting mental health help, & now feel strong enough me up & about, & thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate it.
I look forward to some new videos by you when you feel up to it also. Stay strong & creative.
