Dune by David Lynch - let's just say it's divisive
Join us as we begin a new season of David Lynch movies with 1984's Dune.
Dune has already featured in the podcast, as part of the creative tangle that helped define sci-fi cinema in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and saw the inception of Alien and Blade Runner. Now, as we embark upon a mini-series focused on the works of the recently passed David Lynch, we're watching Dune itself.
Let's be real - Nath is in his element, Dave is up for the challenge, and Rob doesn't have a clue what's happening. Hold on, it's only going to get stranger...

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies is our personal Mount Doom
Переглядів 1,9 тис.14 днів тому
It's gone. It's done. We complete our journey through Middle-earth with The Battle Of The Five Armies, a film Rob has never seen, and Nathan wouldn't mind having never seen. Listen, the chances of us suddenly loving the Hobbit movies and this becoming a triumphant ending are slim to none. But... climactic things are in the air. Armies are marching. Deep lore is waking from its slumber. Somewher...

If Rob watches one more minute, this will be the most Hobbit movie he's ever seen... We're marching on with our unexpected adventure, which this week means watching the second of Peter Jackson's Hobbit films, The Desolation of Smaug. Rob has only seen half of this film before, leaving the cinema back in 2013 thanks to 48 frames-per-second-induced motion sickness. Nath has seen the whole thing a...

As January follows Christmas, so too does The Hobbit follow The Lord of the Rings. A thump of ice-cold reality after the festive high. It's 12 years since we saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - will the lens of hindsight impact our reaction? Or will the CG orcs, cartoonish action and that scene with the plates prove too great a burden? Listen on to find out, and join us next week for The De...

So it begins. We are is a massively pro-Theoden podcast, and so it brings us great pleasure to arrive at the second of Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, The Two Towers. Peter Jackson wanted us to see the extended (uncut) versions in theatres, but Harvey Weinstein stopped him. In fact, Harvey wanted just ONE movie in the threatres, not a trilogy. 5 years of court proceedings - and the 'harvey weinstein orc" in return of the king (made at Jackson's specific direction) was the result. Too many people don’t realize they are arguing in favour of a version of this movies that was only shown in theatres because of legal reasons - not for artistic reasons. - Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format before the second and third film hit theatres to get back at Harvey Weinstein, again, they wanted people to see the whole movie which invites feelings of completion in one’s heart. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together. Good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enough to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad (done on purpose to dumb down a population). Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!

I watched this movie many times without reading the books or seeing any analysis of it (pre-high speed internet days), and I was always surprised how much more I understood the world on repeated viewing, but I couldn't get through it at first. Eventually I grew to love it and it's a comfort watch for me. The casting feels regal, the voiceovers are a vibe, and it has so many memorable deliveries too. That old theatre feeling of acting. I was disappointed to hear Lynch disavow his own work.

Just in case nobody has answered it yet, in the Extended Edition Gandalf tells Frodo Gollum's true name. That's how he knew it in this movie.

Rob saying he doesn't like Ad Astra because 'it's men staring into space thinking about things' was a little weird. I've read The Martian and I did enjoy it, I enjoy the movie too, but I can see why some might get annoyed with the 'I'm gonna science the shit out of this' type of character. But, it's the character and his way of coping with the insane situation.

Funny that Rob’s standout scene with the pain box is actually a microcosm of the entire story - Paul is forced to endure the pain of Arrakis or die, a triumph of human will.

I remember borrowing this movie from my high school library and enjoying it enough that i rented the SCI FY mini series (which i enjoyed mainly because it had more time to explain things), haven't seen the 2 new ones yet so i don't have any opinion on them. Lynch’s version fails as a story but I still think the visual world-building and distinct cultures are amazing. I personally find Villeneuve’s movies (generally - not just limited to Dune) to be quite clinical and stark and not to my tastes, and find myself much preferring the sincere eccentric idiosyncrasies of Lynch’s highly flawed creation. There’s no getting away from what a spectacular mess the storytelling is, though.

My first exposure to David Lynch was the accompanying ‘book of the film’ for Dune (largely stills from the movie with a brief text description of the ongoing plot) that for some unfathomable reason was in my primary school class library. As an 11 year old I had absolutely no idea what it all meant but the gruesome pictures were very compelling!

David Lynch is a great choice and he has so many great movies, most of them that will confuse the hell out of Dave. But you started with Dune, a movie that... has a good cast and ummmm, yeah. The best Dune is the tv mini series that covers things that happen after the movie and shows that Paul really is not a good guy either.

Love this film, casting is perfect, had a lot to squeeze in. It put me onto the books, very impressed how well this was done in the 80’s considering the material - it’s not a perfect film by any means but I love it for its faults as much as what it did well. The new ones are a bit bland for me but still enjoy them.

Here's the thing -- you chaps just didn't watch the proper edit of Lynch's film. Both of the "official" releases were rubbish, but fortunately there's a fan who calls himself "Spicediver" who took all the available footage, including the deleted book-faithful ending, and reworked it into a narrative that actually hangs together and provides enough context to make sense of everything. That's the one to watch. This version is called Dune (1984) Alternative Edition Redux or the Spicediver Cut. It seems not to be available on UA-cam anymore, but was actually included on a couple of official BluRay releases in Germany. One also used to be able to find Madsen's intro monologue in German, which she speaks, but I suspect that after Villeneuve's version was released, they must have scoured UA-cam of a bunch of 1984 content.

It's actually quite comforting that Rob didn't get Dune on the first watch. I saw the TV Sci-Fi channel version first and I was in my teens I think but was mostly confused about everything going on. I then later watched Lynch's version and understood it a bit better, then eventually read the book and finally it was all starting to make sense (my version had terms at the end of the book to explain what these concepts were). When I saw Vileneuve's version years later I already understood most of what was going on.

Trouble with Lynch is he's a hard sell if you're not into that kind of thing. He's one of my favourite directors, potentially my favourite American director, but if you're not someone whose into his kind of surrealism, meta-commentary and dreamlike style of filmmaking then you won't be a fan. Also, doesn't Dave like rules, I seem to remember he said he liked rules a lot. I honestly can't say whether or not Lynch is a rulebreaker because its hard to know as there aren't that many established rules in the first place, but given it's dream logic in most of his films you have to go along with the fact that things simply aren't going to make sense, if you're okay with that and once you're in that mindset then great, you'll probably love Lynch, but if you can't get on board with it then you probably won't like his work.

One thing I'll point out, and that's that Frodo failed to destroy the Ring, but _that was never his part._ He swore to _take_ the Ring to Mount Doom, but the destruction of the Ring was left to Providence. He was never expected to destroy it by anyone but himself - HE put the job on himself, but it wasn't what was laid on him. That's why the seeming death of his spirit was so tragic, because it was due solely to his own sense of guilt. He was revered as the savior of Gondor, but he couldn't live with what he felt was his ultimate failure, not understanding that no one - not man nor elf nor god - could possibly have done what he felt he had to do. It was impossible by any effort, and had to happen through chance, which is how it happened.

Weekly Tolkien pedantry post 🤣 Elves go to the Halls of Mandos. They don't respawn, it's the place they await the afterlife. Glorfindel came back, but that is a retcon by Tolkien Ancalagon the Black. Another good dragon is Glaurung, who is just evil, transfixing a tragic hero to let him live with his failure after Thank you for your straightforward approach to film reviews. Doing it fresh and being your own reviewers, not taking a steer from other people. In favour of or not, it is your own opinion and you make your cases This has been a delight I enjoy these films.
