  • After successfully turning Rob into a Star Trek fan, the eye of fandom turns to Dave who has never seen a single episode of Doctor Who. That's about to change as we show him five stories from five different doctors, starting with 'Rose' and 'Dalek' from the Christopher Eccleston era.

I remember how excited I was when the new series started, and how much Ecclestone's Doctor pulled me in instantly. Rose was such a good way to bring the series back for a whole new generation and I'm still so happy it exists.

My kids and I spent many happy Saturday afternoons watching Ecclestone's Doctor Who and it was on most families' TV's that year. It was a highlight of the week. Snacks, cuddled-up on the sofa, happy times. The Christmas Special probably had more viewers than the Queen's Speech and Songs of Praise put together.

on the subject of not knowing who the Doctor is or his origins, we didn't really get an answer to that in the original series back in the 60's until the end of season 6 and the 2nd Doctor's run. Before then all we got was the Doctor is an alien, he travels through time and so do other members of his species.

I 100% agree that the Daleks are not scary, they are dangerous and vile. They are not scary. But the sadness and the feeling sorry is literally the point of the episode. I'm very much in agreeance with Rob and Nath's take on the Doctor in this episode. Anyway, I won't get too into it. I would say 'Rose' is just in the Top 100 episodes of this 2005-2022 show and 'Dalek' is just outside of the Top 50.

    Cool. Subbed.
I like the Eccleston/Tennant era of the show, but it's the Smith/Capaldi era that's my favourite, so I'm looking forward to you reaching that.
I think the statement that the BBC put out about Eccleston also included that he was finding the filming schedule hard and they falsely quoted him as saying he was tired, which again, wasn't true, and it was that bit which he felt was them trying to ruin his career.

The Daleks first went up some stairs in the 1980's - in Remembrance of the Daleks (with Sylvester McCoy's Doctor) - that era was very "CBBC" feeling in terms of budget though, difficult to go back to if you didn't see it as a child.
You should watch the very first story from the original series with the Daleks in - you could watch the edited & colourised version, or the whole 7 episode (25 minutes each) black & white version.
Or the second story - Dalek Invasion of the Earth from the second Series.
Both serials with William Hartnell as the Doctor.
In someways the Daleks have never been better than those 2 stories - maybe in Genesis of the Daleks (from the 1970's with Tom Baker as the Doctor - and introducing Davros as the Dalek creator, and filling out their backstory).
The Daleks are Space Nazis - pure and simple, the older stories make that very clear, especially Genesis of the Daleks.

I am a bit older than Nathan, so I started mostly with Pertwee
My earliest memories include an Auton episode, a daffodil spraying plastic over someone's face and killing them
And giant green maggots in the Green Death
    Always been unsettling
And as for imbalance of relationship. They tried that in the 70s with Pertwee and scientist Liz Shaw. Pity they then backed away from that, because the Doctor may be wise and experienced, but they are not omniscient
The show had a remit of being educational, it has always tried to be progressive, including tackling eco concerns.
    As to Rose's mum
That casting made me feel old, remembering her as the young love interest (admittedly the subject of a much older man, like Rose and the Doctor) from "Nuns on the Run"
That made me feel so old
Not as old as I felt when Matt Smith got the job 😂

Dr Who back when it still was. What did they do to our boi? Ruined it, ruined him. They sabotaged the Brilliant Capaldi's final season, gradually stretching even HIS phenomenal acting chops. Then they hired Whittaker, a drama actress WAY out of her depth, I mean if they really were dead set on a woman becoming the next Dr, there's SO MANY better options they could have chosen. And then, after a WOEFUL 3 seasons under that, we have, what's his name, Gatwa? Dr Who's just become simply "oh look the US have stolen our culture and RUINED it because American's be DUMB"
I can't even stand the "thought" of Dr Who anymore. The Whitteker era retconned and "changed" far too much just "cuz agenda" or whatever, and I've heard scant that's really "promising" about the new guy. [Again, if they were dead set on coloured, there's BETTER options] I mean look at the 2005 reboot. Ecclestone was a tour de force as the at that time new Dr. Mysterious, a little bit dangerous, and charismatic. [No wonder Billie Pipers "Rose Tyler" had her head turned] Then we had David Tennant, literally channelling ARTHUR DENT on his very first outing. And after 3 years of just mad cap adventures and total hilarity we had Smith's Dr, and WOW did he have a great run, starting by LITERALLY falling out the sky without even getting his motor functions working, into the garden of the guardian's of his next companion [and Amy Pond, can I just say BEST COMPANION EVER!] who turned out to be a 11 year old scared of nothing Scottish girl who made a total stranger fish finger's and custard? [Like you do?] Cue more years of just [imitates mind blown] including but not limited to "rebooting the universe" and "How could I forget my Rory" [Oh, SECOND best companion ever but it's VERY close] and... just... wowzers. AND THEN we had the Peter Capaldi Dr who was basically a fusion of Smith and Tennant only HE'S BEEN THROUGH A TONNE OF STUFF along with the continuation and eventual conclusion of the Clara Oswald "impossible girl" story line... and then, once the Raven called for Clara's ultimate fate, that's unfortunately where the wheels begun to spin off. TEN SEASONS of absolute quality, and then with the inclusion of [damn, what's her name] and the weird bald guy from little Britain, the show turned away from what made it so great, becoming a self edifying meme, barely held together by a great actor trying desperately to make gold out of a turd... Well, he say's his final words, gives maybe the best speech a Dr ever gave and turns into...
The aforementioned drama actress totally unsuitable for the role. And HERE is how bad she truly was. Up to that point I had watched literally EVERY Dr Who episode since the 2005 reboot, even [often] struggling through Capaldi's last half season or so where it became ever more obvious the show's quality was going downhill, and yet Whittaker killed 11 seasons or the equivalent of 13 years in THREE episodes. The clincher was the TOXIC bus episode that was lame, biased and WOEFULLY HISTORICALLY INACCURATE because ACTUALLY a heck of a lot of us in Britain WERE bothered by all of that sort of thing, it mattered a lot, and the general depiction of your average white Britain of that time was atrocious and DEEPLY bigoted, and the true Dr Who would never be so heavy handed. But even THAT was not truly what did me in so far as being a WHOVIAN was concerned, it was that NEVER BEFORE had the companions been so WOEFULLY inadequate and unmemorable. I mean even "what's her name" I can remember some details of her story-line. [such as she ultimately becomes a Cyberman] But with Whittakers? They're just a blur of abstract box ticking tropes, to me. And I don't even want to get started on the latest ones, one of which, more was made out of her/him whatever's real life sexuality, than, you know, what they will GENERALLY be like as a character...[And Gatwa's Dr is all style... no substance...]
The point of all this is TRUE Dr Who, is dead. And it won't regenerate until the BBC REMEMBERS what made the reboot such a success to begin with. [And no, it's not shoving tokenism and agenda's down our throats] Build up your cast. Make their personalities more than just whatever you want their over-arching "agenda" to be. This is why Mickey [Yes, I mean Rose's Mickey the one who went to another dimension, and then came back, and then went back] will always be SO MUCH BETTER than... what was his name? All I can remember of Whittaker's coloured male companion is he was just a "box tick" because his personality is overshadowed by the "fight the man" narrative.

Rose is precision engineered as the perfect start, not to mention all episodes of the new series are available. If you're introducing someone to the show, RTD season one is precisely designed to make it work. Ideally, you'd do the whole run but as a basic intro, Rose and Dalek work pretty well.

Forgive the parlance, but I fear said younger members of your family are pulling your leg. If they're not, the faux pa is ON THEM. I dare say that the vast majority of people generally know what "that's a shame" implies. The onus is not on you to modify what you say, to "program out" what is generally and probably always will be a very run of the mill remark. [From your own syntax]
The onus, is on anyone who DOESN'T comprehend it as such, because CLEARLY there is a failure of basic GENERAL education, there. Seriously, to anyone who genuinely IS offended by Martinsear [suppressing the desire to type a quip about that] I must suggest you get to steppin' and HIT THE BOOKS!
