Topographic Typography - Tutorial
In this video I break down a technique that I discovered by accident while experimenting with the 3D inflate tool inside of Illustrator. Since topographic contour map backgrounds are so popular, a matching text effect like this could be useful, so I thought I'd share the results of this happy accident with all of you. This quick tutorial uses the brush tool to create the letterforms, the smooth feature to refine the paths, and an interesting use of the 3D and Materials effects in Illustrator to generate the topographic contours.
I can't wait to see someone put this effect to use in the real world!
If you have any suggestions for other design based tutorials I'd love to hear them in the comments down below. Also if there was anything I missed in this video that you need clarification on let me know and I'll try to help out.
If you found this tutorial useful I'd also appreciate it if you gave the video a thumbs up.

Illustrator Basics - How to handle overlapping points

    i hate how difficult and unintuitive illustrator is. I've been using it for several years now and compared to almost all other adobe products this one is so frustrating... even the simplest things are difficult to achieve. unexpected things happen all the time making the process tedious. they should learn a lot from XD or photoshop, one would think that the products share the same designer principles

    You know, I have watched this 4 times over the year and I still cannot wrap my head around the different swatches. Perhaps I am too ridged, but I draw the whole work and then delete/merge sections to create each layer. I am missing something vital, I just do not understand this. Others have replicated this video and used the swatches in the same way, and still, it confounds me.

    • @davewatkinscreative
      @davewatkinscreative 2 місяці тому

      There are lots of ways to get Illustrator to give you the same result, and each designer is bound to have different workflows. I personally like having visual swatches set up off my canvas for easy access with the eyedropper. The same principal of having settings easily accessible for application to paths can be achieved with the Graphic Style panel. Or of course, you can tailor your workflow to your own liking. I'm just trying to share the building blocks of my process with the internet. I hope you were able to extract something of value from here :) Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

      @@davewatkinscreative Thank you. I did, gain value that is. I think my workflow needs to change, as I come from Blender mainly as my only art. So I deal almost in absolutes if that makes sense? If I want a 3in a circle with a .5 line I type in 25x3, copy, -.5 on the copy and cut one circle from the other. I am currently going through multiple videos to relearn "the right way" so who knows, maybe in another year this video will make sense to me, ha.

    Hi! Thank you for this kind video! I have a question! Sometimes I need to make the round corner manually to give different round for each corner. I can do that in the “Rectangle Properties” which is attached “Transform”below, but sometimes it’s disappear and doesn’t show. In that case, how/where I can pull up that again?

    • @davewatkinscreative
      @davewatkinscreative 2 місяці тому

      With a basic rectangle on your canvas if you use double click on a corner widget, the rectangle properties will pop up. From there if you unlink the radius sizes you can input different size radius measurements for each corner. If you modify the original rectangle with the pen tool, or by pulling and dragging points around, these properties will no longer be available. I'm assuming that's what's happening in your project. If that's the case you can still double click on those corner widgets to enter a radius in. However you will need to do it one by one.

    Great tutorial but in my case it has overlapping lines on top of each other with one different strokes what to do? Second while creating mask I;m getting an error or pop up saying "The top object is very complex and may cause the document o fail to print or preview if used as make" want to make it as mask when I say yes all the lines kind of disappear any idea?

    • @davewatkinscreative
      @davewatkinscreative 4 місяці тому

      Hey there - not sure exactly what you mean about the overlapping lines. All of the maps that I have downloaded so far include lines that overlap. For the second issue it sounds like the shape you wanted to use as your mask wasn’t at the top of your layer order. Make sure the shape you’re trying to use isn’t grouped and that it is located at the top of the layer order when you make your selection - then use the make mask feature. The warning you were getting indicates that you had a complex path at the very top of the layer order and Illustrator was trying to use that as the mask.

      You're right. I have used Macs almost exclusively for the last 20+ years. The actual content in the video should translate over to PC with the only major difference being the CMD key on Mac gets replaced with the Alt key on PC. I don't believe there are any other features that I talked about that don't work on PC
