  • In this basic Adobe Illustrator tutorial I'll share with you my process for creating a custom geometric layered alphabet that has a subtle depth effect. This look was inspired by the book cover for Ready Player Two that came out recently. The effect was very similar to work that I have done in the past for the 36 Days of Type challenge and I thought you might like to see how I created it.
In this tutorial I cover the creation of custom guides using the rectangular grid tool, the use of global colour swatches, and a mix of other tools like, the pathfinder, the measure tool, the pen tool, and some basic gradient techniques.
If there is anything in this tutorial that you feel I missed or didn't cover clearly enough let me know in the comments below and I'll try to help you out. If you found this tutorial useful I'd also appreciate it if you let me know in the comments!

IN 2023 you have to lock the guides manually. They do not come locked by default when you press CMD/Ctrl+5

I just noticed this the other day when I was accidentally selecting and moving guides around when I didn’t mean to be. Strange to me why things like this change over time.
