Who is the best actor in the country ever ? The question is subjective. For me, obviously its Mohanlal. Generation when acting was more often dramatic (1980-2000). He has done something that any actor in the country ever imagined. So many inspired by his style of acting. Natural more realistic, still you can watch Mohanlal’s old movies and feel the freshness in each. Such an actor who has done everything at the age even new generation youth actor can’t pull off. Even it inspired his contemporary like Kamal hassan, Mammootty etc. Such an immense talent. Sorry to say this, I don’t see the character arc in any actors who is performing right now to his level. Even the characters itself has became cult at that time. Now the legend himself has became comical, there are so many films which are good he done in recent times, strictly after 2010. But I don’t see the character arc in any of it. Whether its Drishyam or anything. Because what he was done earlier in his prime became a barrier for him. I still believe no one can do those many variations he has done from Thoovanathumbikal, Kireedam, Vanaprastham, Thazhvaram, Iruvar, Sadayam, Kireedam what more…Such a legendary filmography he has. Nobody in India even come closer to his. Once in a lifetime. Mohanlal is the best. I can argue to anybody any extend on this.

Jawan was a good movie with great social message plus great execution of performing actors/actresses along with decent action. Pathaan was kinda bad, Gadar 2 was horrible, Tiger 3 was bad. Jawan was the only good commercial movie of 2023 imo.

There are certain movies where Tilakan just elevates the scene to a next level. For example the dagger scene in climax of Kireedam. Compare that with Gardish. A very simple dialogue “ katti tazhya idada. Ninda achana parayunne” put the dagger down. It is your father who is asking you to. Absolute legend. Still gives me goosebumps having watched that scene so many times over. Equally expressive eyes of Mohanlal. Puri-Shroff though good performance doesn’t even come close to this.

Instead of appreciating mass cinema of south india we should appreciate this type of movies

The movies from Hindi which you talk about - saransh sparsh do bheega zameen. Etc were of different time. Audience appreciated them. But hardly any content based Hindi movies now. And if any , it’s not like Malayalam that they would get mainstream success. The Malayalam “arty” movies which you quoted were mostly mainstream commercial success. Not like only pipe-smoking-soda -glass-wearing unkils watched them.

Your point about Malayalam movies being content-driven because they do not have a big budget is untrue. The Malayalam population is not interested in making the big-budget masala movies as made in Bollywood or Telugu cinema - we just don't relate to it that much. It seems okay when bollywood or Hollywood or Telugu cinema does it because we realize that in their culture it is okay to act in such grandiose way but, if we make a similar grandiose song and dance movie in Malayalam I wonder if the population will relate to that much because we cannot see the parallels in our own Malayalam society. In the North, especially in Punjab it is part of their culture to be loud and raucous and have noisy, grandiose, over-the-top weddings and dances - that is not part of Kerala culture. We don't dance at weddings, and we hardly engage in drinking parties and loud get-togethers so, it does not make sense to make such masala movies with dances and over-the-top drama in Malayalam movies.

Watched this movie last week. I caught myself crying at certain moments. I wasnt aware that the director is the same one who directed 96, but it reminded me of the scene from 96 when VJS visited his school. He has the ability to invoke emotions in the audience , which is very rare nowadays. Beutiful cinema. I hope he keeps making more movies like these.

Ott viewers missed deleted scenes where they talk about their land traditions and chola enpire and ancestors That was sole of the movie But they deleted it in ott I loved the movie coz of those scenes

Meizahagan character is portrayed naive but if u get details He is well aware politically educated wise person who is just kind and value his loved ones Director brilliance in portrayel of such character

Sathyan master, Bharat Gopi, Mohanlal, Nedumudi Venu, Mammotty - World class actors from malayalam Manoj K Jayan, Jagathi Sreekumar, Madhu, Murali, Adoor Bhasi, Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair, Prem Nazeer, Soman, Sukumaran, Thilakan, Venu Nagavalli, Balachandra Menon, Suresh Gopi, Jagadeesh, Mukesh, Dileep, Sai Kumar, Siddique, JayaSoorya etc are also extremely talented.
