I am a malayalee.I think great filmsin malayalam were made inthe 1970s 80s and 90s . Watch films like Swayamvaram, Ormakkayi, Namukkuparkkan munthirithoppukal,Gandhinagar second street, Ponmutta idunna tharavu, Kireedam ,Kamaladalam, Ponthanmaada, Vanaprastham etc. Mammooty and Mohanlal are not only superstars but great actors also. They got nationalawards three times each. Nowadays malayalam cinema is making money but content wise very poor . Fahad is a good actor in modern day malayalamfilmsno doubt in that . But he is doing very repetitive kind of roles only .
Great video. Finally someone explained the strong point about Malayalam cinema like script over superstardom, social issues etc. One of my favourite movies Ayyappanum Koshiyum is also a brilliant movie about the battle between 2 male egos which beautifully shows the police procedures in great detail. It also highlights caste issues and other social issues.
@@ReelRealReflect You're welcome. Oh you haven't watched it? Man you're in for a treat! Even with it's near 3 hour runtime, I've watched it 3 times already. It doesn't feel boring/too long due to the gripping screenplay. The inclusion of tribal/folk music into the BGM is a masterstroke. Beautiful cinematography, realistic fight choreography (no people flying around), great performances by the cast. The movie won 4 national awards too for direction, fight choreography, supporting actor and singer (an elderly tribal woman who sang for this film).
Wow. What a wonderful way of explaining. You covered almost all points. I'm a malayali and a big fan of all movies. Yes malayalam movies are those which are realistic and experimental... Not just actors, but the whole industry does a great job❤
Wow! Great video dude. You covered pretty much every aspect. Sometimes I feel like it’s not the problem with the story or direction in any industry. But they are making movies which is more appealing to the ‘target audience’. Most movies remade from Malayalam to other industries are highly modified for the audience.
Thank you! 🙂. I think the kind of audience also demands a film to be made a certain way. Besides, if a Malayalam film is made a little differently, the Malayalam audience will also be curiously interested to watch it.
@@raja-jl9os Bollywood is ruled by unskilled star kids and what they want is money to keep a posh life. Also they are afraid of skilled youth entering their easy money arena and sideline them, hence no experiment.
Great Analysis but a small correction. When you were talking about manichitrathazhu movie , film poster presented on the screen was of the film Devasuram.
A very balanced analysis highlighting both film industries, which I equate to being branches of the huge tree that is Indian Cinema. You've succintly put forth your points on craft that Malayalam actors and technicians have for the craft of cinema. I was also happy that you did not dismiss Hindi Cinema that many people automatically do these days when compared to regional stuff while highlighting the consistent period of decades that the industry churned out, which I feel is way more than all other film industries in our country. At the same time, kudos for calling out the major problem of mainstream "Bollywood" and the celebrities that constantly cater to box office collections and mindless entertainers by taking the audience for grated due to which superlative Hindi movies get buried, whose list is huge, under the crap pile of bad work. Please also make a video on the superlative stuff of Hindi and other regional industries as well.
Thank you for your comments which have been levelheaded throughout. I will start a series with all the regional movies and some gems that have been missed under the glamor of big budget cinema in the country!
@@ReelRealReflect For Hindi as well. The general public is either completely unaware or knows very little of those gems. Also pls watch two Maithili language films 'Dhuin' and 'Gamak Ghar'.
i watched a Malayalam movie a few years ago. I don't remember it's name but i remember the story quite well. It was about a young man going through the consequences of road rage. How he goes to jail, how he repents and becomes a good member of the society and the help he gets and the difficulties he faces. It did not have over the top elements or anything, Just a movie telling a story which had me hooked from the beginning until the credits started rolling. And then recently, i saw another movie partially. It was another one telling a story and that story was not far fetched but the kind that happens in real life. It did not have any obscene item numbers or anything. Just a story which highlights how grit and a positive outlook to life helps one face challenges and overcome them. Again the nature of challenges was also not over the top, it was something that anyone in real society would face. The music was controlled and not the blaring kind which is usually used to tell the mood or set the pacing. That was accomplished by well crafted screenplay. There was a Marathi movie where the protagonist was born into a rich family. He was not useless but was uncaring towards the employees in his family's factory. His grandfather was a very kind man. He could not understand why his grandfather did what he did and why he stopped him from firing people to maximize profit. His approach to business was different to his grandfather. So his grandpa as a challenge, asked him to go and live the life of a normal employee for a month or so and then whatever decision he made, he would be okay with it. So, he goes and finds himself a job and lives their life and finally understands his grandfather's actions. It was an amazing movie. I don't remember the name of the movie but wish more movies like them get the attention they rightfully deserve.
Bro , have you watched "guru" .. it's a great movie that has contemporary relevance to todays society . It's about religion and how we are getting blind because of it
Malayalam and Bengali movies were always classic since start of cinema. OTT and covid brought the small malayalam industry to masses. Let's not bash Bollywood it was the audience that made them what they are. Over the years Bollywood might change.
The mask and the music is a little apalling but the content top tier. As a person from Karnataka i watch Malayalam movies the most. Hindi and Kannada movies had once made me not to goto theatre, The Malayalam current hits have made me to get back to the theatres
Well narrated, to understand Malayalam content and it's cultural influences you need to have a good patience and the roots which are close to our daily lives. That's how our Malayalam industry work, offcourse there are masala and maas movie seekers also who are more influenced by other industry and do get carried away, but young director era started from 2012 movies have come to a great thought process and changed the dimensions of movie seekers.
Everybody talks about the golden era and the current era of malayalam movies where the love for films is what drives the indusstry. but there was also a dark phase where all that came out was soft porn and mediocre mass movies , the reason being that quality movies were getting rejected. Not even the big stars like mammootty and mohanlal were spared where their good movies tanked and the mass movies became superhits. Even then, good movies like mazha, manchadikkuru, akale, makalkku, karunam, shantham, photographer were being made. Malayalam movies recovered from this malady around 2010, when the mass stopped working on the younger generation and small budget films like traffic, cycle, chappakurishu won big at the box office and stood on equal ground with big movies.
Forgot to meantion Sathyajith ray,Pather panchali...which inspired malayali directors. After all, everything started from there.Basil joseph mentioned him in his speech on Asian academy award.
Almost all the Priyadarshan films are actually his Films remade from Malayalam to Hindi. Please note that the original of Garam Masala (2004) was made 20 years before in 1985. Muskurahat, 1992 | Kilukkam, 1991 Gardish, 1993 | Kireedam, 1989 Hera Pheri, 2000 | Ramji Rao Speaking, 1989 Hungama, 2006 | Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, 1984 Kyon Ki, 2005 | Thalavattam, 1986 Khatta Meetha, 2010 | Vellanakalude Nadu, 1988 Hulchul, 2004 | Godfather, 1991 Garam Masala, 2004 | Boeing Boeing, 1985 Kyon Ki, 2005 | Thalavattam, 1986 Chup Chup Ke, 2006 | Punjabi House, 1998 Billu, 2009 | Katha Parayumpol, 2007 Khatta Meetha, 2009 | Vellanakalude Nadu, 1998 De Dana Dan, 2009 | Vettam, 2004
See, There is one main thing that u left out. The viewers. Here if a movie is not good, even if its done by the legendary actors like mohanlal and mammootty will fail. People will not entertain. At the same time if a movie of a debutant is good, it will get all the applause and fame. So film makers are actually forced to make good films. They know, just because they got the dates of famous actors the film wont be a success. Simple as that.
Although the video is speaking more about quality in Malayalam film industry to which I also agree, some observations regarding Bollywood being glamour oriented is not completely true. I've watched some films of Tapsee Pannu and her choice of stories is amazing. She made sure that she got enough screen space in those stories and every character in those story are different from the one that she did before. Bollywood, to do justice to their heroines, just needs to promote such actresses who are ready to do experiments in the stories they choose to act rather than who play safe by being glamour girls. When women oriented films gather momentum then male leading plots would also be quick to follow.
It's not the government sir. It's the people here. The government changes but people's minds never give up the quality. That's why these governments are changing back to back in Kerala.
Kerala government is providing financial backup for female/scst film makers also provide screening facility in Govt owned cinemas, Govt is not inactive, Also IFFK is one the best film festival in country
Well done .. Iam a malayali... I heard different reviews about malayalam film... I think your views are standout from others... I think you are doing your research very well... Keep it up... I have a little correction... Actors like Mohanlal lifting the cinema's quality above the makers expectations through their acting... Examples are Vanaprastham, Sadayam, kireedam etc.. Thats why every malayalam movie lovers saying if you have to know the best acting just watch classic films of Mohanlal and Mammotty..

I started watching malayalam movie in 2019. Before that I would watch only bollywood movies all my life until 2019 and started watching mohanlal and mamooty movies. Then different mallu actors movies and I realized the content they have and the acting omg I realized bollywood actors are still learning how to act. From 2019 I never watched bollywood movies again. Became Hard-core fan of malayalam movies. Even mani ratnam who is dangerous director. People are scared of him. Because if the right expression and dialogue u can't deliver. He will fire you on the spot and after watching mohanlal's acting in iruvar. He forgot to say cut. He just stood still. He said no one can act like him. He is God of acting.
. It is perplexing that an actress would claim that "The Godfather" is overrated, especially considering the multitude of films in various languages that have drawn inspiration from it. Such a statement evokes a sense of disdain towards her.

In the span of 3 years, I’ve watched only 5 to 7 Hindi films. I don’t mean to stir up any north south arguments, but what you said is true , Bollywood is only a branding industry not a creative one.
Mammooty's New Delhi... Like God Father, I would say the base for malayalam movie's modern base... Which started the revival of Malayalam industry which just was at that time was just depended on Shakkeela and Silk Smitha....
Early 2000s were a bad time for Malayalam cinema. With crass and mass scale movie that the likes of Dileep and Mohanlal wanted to churn. Thankfully sanity was restored.

Can popular cinema raise social consciousness? Malayalam cinema did that during 80s, along side meaningful entertainment. Unfortunately, you had to live in kerala to witness the flow. But some of those films are available online these days.

Thank you! Appreciate it 🙂. I did try my best to keep it true to its pronunciation.

I have not included any feel good or normal movies in this list, Movies like Thattathin Marayathu, Premam, Kumbalngi Nights... there are so many awesome movies i did not include, because they do not go with this category. these are peaks.
This video hits the nail on several harsh facts. Kudos to the research done. Cheers.

The only problem is the Bollywood label or define only themselves as the Indian Cinema...
Thank you for your kind words! The movie sounds intriguing! Thank you for the recommendation, I would definitely watch it.
Hats off to the effort you took to put this video together. Shows your passion too brother 🔥
Thank you for your kind words! It is truly appreciated 🙏🏽🙂
Agree with your analysis. 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow. What a wonderful way of explaining. You covered almost all points. I'm a malayali and a big fan of all movies. Yes malayalam movies are those which are realistic and experimental... Not just actors, but the whole industry does a great job❤
Thank you! 🙏🏽
Damn great analysis. Especially the why and how the audience affect cinema and wise verse.
Thank you! 🙏🏽
Pls watch recently released ullozhkku which is still playing in theaters. Fine acting at its best .
Surely will do! Thanks 🙂

It's all about audience, nothing else. Quality is demanded in every area, whether it is life, dress, food,....
Than why people say bollywood is garbage?🤔
@@raja-jl9os Bollywood is ruled by unskilled star kids and what they want is money to keep a posh life. Also they are afraid of skilled youth entering their easy money arena and sideline them, hence no experiment.
Great Analysis but a small correction. When you were talking about manichitrathazhu movie , film poster presented on the screen was of the film Devasuram.
Thank you! 😊 And yes, I am aware of it, have added it in the description.
Wow ...the way you presented it ... I didn't see any one presenting and comparing a valid thing like this ..hats off
Thank you! 🙏🏽🙂
Great video, great analysis.
Thank you! Appreciated truly 🙂
i watched a Malayalam movie a few years ago.
It's about religion and how we are getting blind because of it
Nicely narrated, you have good voice. Keep going, like to watch more from you...
Thank you for your comment! 🙂 With the Shetty brothers, I feel Karnataka cinema is now in the elite game too.
@@ReelRealReflect Agree , Also Late puneeth rajkumar's production house PRK studios has got some good movies in ott platforms.
Thank you 🙂
You must watch "malik" from Malayalam (fahad fasil)
To all my malayali people...
It's the place where we should be humble...🙏
I mean sit back and be polite...
And respect others effort....

Unfortunately Malayalam had some global standard movies but since there was no OTT, none knew
Bollywood is aspirational industry
It's not the government sir. It's the people here. The government changes but people's minds never give up the quality. That's why these governments are changing back to back in Kerala.
Kerala government is providing financial backup for female/scst film makers also provide screening facility in Govt owned cinemas, Govt is not inactive, Also IFFK is one the best film festival in country

Many Hindi films stories are pilfered from Malayalam films without showing it in the credits.
. It is perplexing that an actress would claim that "The Godfather" is overrated, especially considering the multitude of films in various languages that have drawn inspiration from it. Such a statement evokes a sense of disdain towards her.

Good analysis
First thing we Indians need to stop doing is referring various Indian film industries with 'wood' suffixed. We might as well call them Hindi movies, Malayalam movies, Telugu movies and so...
Can popular cinema raise social consciousness? Malayalam cinema did that during 80s, along side meaningful entertainment. Unfortunately, you had to live in kerala to witness the flow. But some of those films are available online these days.
