How to Reupholster a dining chair- DIY Tutorial
Wow
I really appreciate this tutorial! Extremely helpful with all the details for measurements and sewing.
So glad it is helping you!
Yes please do one one no sewing.
Thank you for the interesting video - I like watching people demonstrate their skills. I liked the music too.
Thank you!
Super informative video, thank you! I’m restoring an airflex couch and the springs are tied together with black elastic bands which have seen better days and many are broken. They’re normal-ish sized elastic bands just tying one spring to the next, and so on. Is that an alternative method of tying the springs or was this maybe a layman’s repair job?
Some manufacturers will use such methods. As long as each spring is tied together so that they work as a unit you should be ok. Tying twine, wires that are clipped together and webbing are other ways that manufacturers tie those together. All methods work. Some are more durable and tie together better than others.
Natuzzi leather furniture. We've had a 4/pc living room for 23 yrs. Wood base still looks new! The frames are still great! Leather is wrinkling, scratches, & some scratches are starting to tear. I'm not sure if I should buy new? These pieces are too good to throw away, & with a contractor husband & dog's, it still lasted 23 yrs now I'm wondering about price difference. Plus I love the design i have vs new designs.
Great question. You would need to reach out to your local upholsterer to know for sure, but a 4 pc sectional in leather could run you more than you paid for it if you paid in the 2-4k range. But if you like the sectional style and comfort-- reach out and get a quote! Most places will give you an estimate for free.
does anyone know what the red spray glue is?
It is a foam glue. Foam is polyeurethane based and doesn't play well with most adhesives. Below is a link. www.yourautotrim.com/1gakad.html?msclkid=d3ed1a440824158a5d937d77e860ec26&Shop%20All%20ID%27s%20DT%2FTab%2FMobile&All%20ID%27s

*New Subscriber* : That was great ! My 26 year old Danish made couch _finally_ needs new springs and foam. This video will be very useful for that project !
So glad to hear this will be useful! You've got this.
Do you recommend doing Fabric on your own, at home? So, if I want on-line to buy fabric, I assume I owed need too measuring , cutting, and fitting skills to do this on my own without any experience? Sewing skills, no? Or is more complex than this, which I think it would be, but am not sure about. I can take a picture of my Chair...it unfortunately has Mold/Mildew which I think is embedded into the foam or straw itself. It seems like a classic chair. Any help is appreciated before I strip, replace, or throw this out--which is what I never want to do! Thank you
You're getting into some of the details of how to to do the actual project. That is a question of how handy you are, what tools you have, and how complex your piece is. Some chairs don't require sewing and just need to be pulled and stapled. This video can give you an idea of what can be entailed in such a project: ua-cam.com/video/kNkr3kCxnRA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CreatewithCraftsman
I like you diy glue gun! Can you show us how you make it?
I'll do you one better. It is not home-made. Here is a link below! It is a siphon gun. You can actually get a cheap one from Harbor freight. Any of these you get just know that if you don't oil the connecting pieces and let it sit too long it will become really hard to separate. But the kind of glue that works on foam and things is pretty intensive stuff. You can also use a 3M adhesive spray can that you can get from the home depot. Just check that it works for foam. Tell us about the crown and seam allowance
We will try to get you a new video on that. But crowning is how you get a rounded puffy side to happen without pulling in the sides of the cushion. If you want a flat cushion-- don't worry about crowning. But if you want a lofted, domed, puffy look-- then you need to add places for the foam to go, but to still have the edges straight when you're done. Seams-- in upholstery a 1/2" seam allowance is standard. That is where you sew 1/2" from the edge of the fabric so that the fabric doesn't unravel on you when you're done (and gives you space to keep everything straight).
Very impressive, and informative video
Thank you!
fine job young man, well done! ty. i been procrastinating a strip job but it seems minor now.
Thanks, that makes us happy to hear that this was useful to you.
Bagus sih, tapi kebanyakan ngomong, lebih baik praktek tanpa bicara, lebih mudah dimengerti dengan praktek
Thank you for the feedback. We are trying to teach the right principles and it can be a tricky balance with talking and demonstrating.
what is that redish spray? Adhesive?
That is our foam adhesive. You have to use a specific adhesive because most things don't stick to the polyeurethane and similar chemicals. 3M makes a good adhesive spray you can get at the home depot or walmart.
I would like yo know ifyou have leather imitation. What is it's name?
We have several options for faux leather. Vinyl is another name for it as well. Those are readily available and Naugahyde is one of the best.
Remember this shit
I burned a small hole in my ottoman. I can't find fabric to match it and I don't want to make the hole bigger by cutting off the burnt edges. Honestly, It would be way more money to take it to be repaired. Will this work for it if I do it correctly?
I have been searching for someone to make a large drum lamp shade. I figured if someone can upholster furniture a lampshade would be a breeze, but no luck. I have a large chandelier in my small foyer to make a big impact. All of my open plan fixtures have drum shades and I need one to sit in the middle of my chandelier. I would attempt it myself, but no one carrys 30 inch rings. Any suggestions?
I would suggest reaching out to a local upholstery shop. That is for sure possible but is going to be more on the custom side of things. You could also reach out to a lamp shade or light fixture company. There are places that specialize in exactly the kind of thing you're looking for.
Gorgeous
thanks queen!
Very informative, thank you!
Great info!!
I’m having trouble with the simple single knot on each spring. When you tie and pull to tighten it in the video it seems your knot pulls out the slack and gets tighter. When I pull it doesn’t seem to take out the last bit of slack it just locks in place once the knot is tight. I feel like I should be able to get it to tense up more but the knot locking up seems to prevent that. Any tips? I like the technique.
try tying that knot the other way. Instead of RH over LH go LH over RH or vise versa. That should clear that up.
Thanks and please keep making videos, I find them all so informative and easy to watch.
I'm so glad to hear that! We do plan to keep making videos. Do you have anything specifically you'd want to see?
@@createwithcraftsman Great! I'd like to see a video on foam core cushions with duck down envelopes. How to measure the fabric and considerations between seat and back cushions. Thanks, B
@@brent1619 Thank you for the feedback. We will try to do a video on that very thing.
I had a custom velvet down couch that lasted 25 years through 3 children, 2 adults and 2 dogs. It was slip covered so i could wash it. Well its finally sagging now. I look at the junk sofas on the market for $3000. My velvet couch came from North Carolina and cost $8000. It was a wedding gift. I dont want to part with it. My husband can do the springs. What type of foam should I replace the bottom cushion with? I think i vould just slip the slip cover over the new foam?
You are going to want to use foam you get from an upholstery shop or foam shop. Something around 27027 for the seat is good (those are specification numbers for the ILD and IFD which is how dense and how heavy the foam is. The density should be good for a seat (or up to 35 on the firmer side) for a seat. A local upholsterer or foam shop should be able to help you navigate that. There are some online options that you could use as well but local shops can typically get you better pricing. www.foamorder.com/
very nice info ty
You're welcome!
Thank you. Excellent!!❤ I have to reupholster my 2 chairs that I’ve been putting off for 4 years. This gives me a little more confidence.❤
You've got this.
Beautiful 😊
Do you have any suggestions for where to buy no-sag upholstery nails? It seems like Upholstery Connection doesn't sell them anymore.
It is a hard nail to find, our suppliers discontinued them too. you just want a thinner nail with a larger head and to try to not be as thick as your wood so it doesn't poke through. A local hardware store like Ace should have a few options. If you can't find something let me know and we'll look up a spec for you.
Great video! Thanks so much. Do you have any suggestions for where to buy the Fabric Farms products since they no longer sell supplies?
Thanks
How do you get into cracks? I have a very old table I'm about to do and I can't figure out how to deal with the a large crack? I think it will look odd if it has the old stain/varnish still in the crack when I refurbish it. Not the kind of furniture you do, I know, but I assume this happens on chairs and stuff too?
Wire brushes do well at getting into cracks. If you spray on the stripper that can help it get in and loosen things up. Many cracks are narrow enough that they may not effect your new finish depending on what it is.
@@createwithcraftsman Thank you!
incredible video😯 bright and simple to the point. for a back cushion using the same technic yet to have more crown (hope its a good idea) - can i use a block of foam in the middle, leave about 2 inch instead of 1\2 for crowning and fill the rest with dacron? thank you! 😀
Yes you can! all different kinds of crowning are possible and depending on the stretch of your fabric you may need to adjust your crowning for a larger fill in the center. Principles all work the same though.
This video was extremely helpful and easy to understand Thank you 😊
Thank you for the straightforward video! I am planning on doing patchwork to my fabric daybed, the whole side got obliterated by kittens, but I like the idea of a "boho" patch couch Since cats may do it all over again and I can't afford to keep buying furniture lol. I was trying to see if there's like a stich gun or anything that would do it, but so far this seems like the best method 🤔
Does this method still work with a seam that is on top of the cusion? it's a double top stich and the thread has came unraveled.
Run a ruler down the inside of the seam for the perfect finish
Good idea. There are good guides as well that can keep the seam nice and even. The fabric nap always makes it want to crawl one way or the other though.
Very helpful thanks! I reupholstered my entire suite myself teaching myself by taking it apart and reupholstering .....2 chairs need to be done again now but I must replace zigzag springs and sponge etc this time ...how do I calculate the amount of sponge etc needed please....is it the same as the calculation of the fabric? Your help will be much appreciated! 😊
That is really getting into the weeds. You need to know how thick of foam each part of the sofa has (needs) and then to calculate the square footage or overall dimensions using each thickness of foam. For instance most arms are between 1/2" to 3" foam, seat are typically 4-7" foam, backs are 1-3" foam, decks are 1/2" foam, etc. So when you take it apart just be careful to look at the thickness (based on the middle of the foam somewhere instead of an edge and you'll get the right idea.
@@createwithcraftsman Thanks a Lot for your input.....Really appreciate it. Keep well😊
Caulk guns work for the springs
What do you mean by that?
I wouldn't trust it.
Awesome video! I'm respringing a couch and this was exactly what I was looking for.
Glad it helped!
What size foam are you using…..
We used a down envelope so the foam is different than usual.
Do you really need the twine for a chair with the zigzag springs? I’m replacing mine after losing one spring. It’s a Lane chair but it’s a hand me down, but I don’t think they used it.
specifically italian ruby twine. It holds up a lot better than typical bailing twine. I believe it is just a hemp twine but it is durable. If you use something less quality you can double up on the thread to keep the strength up.
Hey great video. Very clear. I'm going to rebuilding some outdoor furniture for six inch thick foam cushions that my friends already have. I want to use the zig zag springs underneath but I am concerned that the pillows won't sit flat on the springs if they have the curve that you show.. Can I stretch the springs out until they are flat?
You wouldn't want to stretch these until they are flat. To eliminate the gap in front you would use edge roll which is a foam, burlap, cotton, bolster that you would attach to the front of the frame and then fill foam or cotton in behind the edge roll so that the sloped portion of the spring is filled in. You could even go without the edge roll if you have a finished wood outside and just fill in with cotton or foam in that sloped region.
Hi, doing this job like how you did, what is the basic weight limit? I am guessing 200-250? What would you recommend changing for heavier people?
Great question. That gets into the guage of steel you use, the spring spacing, the way the frame was built, etc. It all works together in one unit to get the best result. We use 10 guage springs and I would not recommend them on a plywood frame as it would pull it apart. Our sofas are built with 350 lb people in mind so a 12' sofa would need to support 4 people, though you need to look at every piece of the puzzle, not just the springs.
4:38 - If I roll the thread around my finger a few times and then slip it off, I don't have a knot. I have a simple coil shape that immediately unwinds. ???
You want to roll it off your finger so that it winds itself up. If you are not having success with that just tie a regular knot.
Would you please share the specific information on the fabric you used on this sofa? Material, brand, style & color? This video was probably the most helpful video I've ever watched on upholstery. Thank you
Thank you so much for the feedback! I hope it helps you on your upholstery journey. The fabric is Couture Textiles Perris Ash
