Also, can you make a video on the best college majors + minors for people who are looking to get into management consulting? I haven't made any videos on an MBA yet since I don't have one myself, but I will add this to my running list of potential ideas for the future! From what I can tell, MBA can be a pretty good option for career switchers, international students looking to enter the US, or people who are burnt out and needing a change.

    I currently work in Strategy & Corp Dev (M&A) at a large fortune ~160 tech company. Started in a Finance Leadership Development Program at a fortune ~30 tech company (an underrated path out of undergrad in my opinion). If my goal is to work in Big Tech strategy, what are your thoughts on working in an internal consulting/strategy role at a Fintech company (Mastercard/Visa/Capital One/etc.) right out of undergrad? Obviously exits won't be as strong as working in MBB, but do you think it'd still be a strong stepping stone and a viable option? Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks Matt and great video as always!

    Would you not say joining a startup shows - 1) balls to take the leap and risk it, 2) increased responsibility otherwise not available to juniors at big established firms, 3) entrepreneurial flair (rarely pigeon holed in one function - can work sales as well as operations yada yada yada.

    Hey Matt, Absolutely love your content ! Especially your white-board "breakdown" approach. Your videos are frameworks one can adopt in their lives. And, most likely people would like to keep coming back to the video or be reminded of these diagrams. I, personally, like to take a SS of your diagrams and keep it on my notes. It would be better , if you could allow us some time to take a SS -- maybe you could take a step away from the diagram, and let us take a SS. :) Best wishes

    I'm a former finance consultant turned AI engineer. I think I understand the point being made, but it's unnecessarily drawn out and yet also too vague. You want to demonstrate clearer value to future employers, and generally speaking, larger more established firms have more consistent quality requirements for their employees, which helps you demonstrate clearer value to future employers. However, the comparison of AI startup to McKinsey is strange. These are wildly different companies. Not every company demonstrates clear value in every role. Working a BD job at a startup is obviously less liquid than being a consultant at MBB. But being an AI engineer at MBB is much less liquid than working at most tech companies, even startups. Also, my fungibility as an employee is not the same thing as my skill transparency. If you have a PhD in a technical area with expertise easily verified during a single interview, your value should be relatively clear to the employer, regardless of your past work experience. This is despite the fact that your job is illiquid in the sense that you possess a rare skillset that is less fungible. This idea of career liquidity is more important for people with softer skill sets, who possess less transparent skills.

    • @sj-el4lu
      @sj-el4lu 8 днів тому

      This creator is a consultant/strategy person so it makes sense that it's from that vantage point, but I agree that when it comes to hard skills and niche roles the "name brands" change wildly, and McK isn't necessarily going to have the cachet for non-consultant roles that it does for consultants.

  • @WilliamRandomUploads
    @WilliamRandomUploads 9 днів тому

    Agree with lesson #3 a lot, the idea of being new to a firm/project/issues you’re trying to solve gives you a lot of leeway to ask dumb questions and try to understand something well

  • @zan1971
    @zan1971 9 днів тому

    If you go the illiquid path then you'll definitely be met with lots of lowballing and hostility from employers. You have to know what you're doing and have previous cases work out for you so someone takes you seriously. It's not just a mental peace factor that people stay in liquid careers. The system is literally designed to assign value to everyone and anyone who rebels against it is not treated kindly.
