Hi Matt, great Japan video! Growth often comes from "good" discomfort. If you think when we learned the most in life .. it's when we pushed thru a challenge. I support you.
@@matthuang21 welcome, Matt! the 6am meetings from Tokyo! That's the Tech world. ☀So I've traveled to East coast for work, like you! Last time, my company nearly booked me Airbnb House with colleagues. 🚙🌎It was to minimize the packed parking at a huge Convention Center for global buyers and sellers--which we had attend. Sharing to cheer you up! ☺

Your vlog is real and relaxing, it shows a very authentic side of yourself and put my life in perspective too. Hoping for more like these. Thank you Matt~!
hi matt, i really love how you generally make your videos and explain it in a completely broken down manner ~ would appreciate creating a similar one of what it MEANS TO do QUALITY networking (not just basic logistics of thank u mails, wishes and other stuff) - the sauce for the calls (banking) for analysts/director level positions.
Watching this was like watching a friend document their life, all the while showcasing their business acumen. Love your content - keep it going :) Would be awesome to cross paths someday and grab a quick photo with you!
OMG so happy to see you in Tokyo!! I've been following you for your amazing content but wasn't expecting to see you in my hometown. So exciting - please post more Tokyo videos 💓
For videos I’ve got a couple of things - 1. Networking. How do you effectively do this and what are the benefits? 2. Share advice on how to host productive meetings with stakeholders. What tells you that a meeting is/was productive? How do I ensure it is a good use of people’s time?
Hi Matt, thank you for this video!! I absolutely love your content and hearing you talk about how fulfilling making content is for you because your videos are immensely beneficial to watch. I had a video suggestion that would personally be quite valuable: "Stepping stone activities for people looking to break into strategy consulting". I have decided to lock into strat consulting, but near the end of this year's recruiting cycle, and although there are a few opportunities available, aside from strengthening casing skills, I was wondering if you have advice on what people like me (applying outside the traditional consulting cycle in the UK) would be doing in their "free time" to strengthen their application in the meantime to really help them standout! From roles/ internships, or maybe I should just be focusing on internal networking, but I feel that I should be gaining practical experience in the meantime; based on your experiences, I'd love to get your view on this! Thanks, Matt!!
Man, I’m reading an amazing book right now, I don’t know what’s it called in English but in Russian it is called “Бухгалтерский учет за 14 дней». It’s great, really recommend it
Hi Matt, thanks again for the new video, I love your passion and drive to be a wonderful human being and it inspires me to become better too! A potential video idea which I'd love to have your view on this, is the transfer from university to 'the real world' and the different way of thinking necessary to succeed. As I just graduated from university, obtained my master's degree in business administration and want to break into MBB, I'm struggling with the way of thinking necessary to solve cases and do the actual work. In university I'm used to brainstorm, scatter a lot of information, organize and then go filter out keypoints (reversed pyramid) but now I need to reprogram my brain to get used to the pyramid MECE way of thinking. The questions that I have are: how to reprogram your brain (practice, practice, practice...), how to know your keypoints before unraveling the facts that support them (I know you need to take a moment to structure your thoughts but if your beginning is 'messed up' the rest will be messed up too, I rely on my intuition here...). What was your experience from uni to the real world? Maybe you already discussed this in another video and I haven't seen that yet. Much love!
Hi Matt, Let me preface this by confessing that I am not really your average viewer, or even your viewer really. I was thinking about something along the lines of the perils of holding individual freedom over societal good when I discovered your essay on substack. Even though it did not seem like a piece I would gain much out of, I still read it ( fortunately). I found it suprisingly relatable and fun to read. I have always found career- centric content creators a little delusional and self grandiosing, but reading your article helped me break that image a little. Anyway, where I am going with all this is that this is the first video of yours I have watched and even though I am not really in the position to give video suggestions, I would love to see more such reflections and musings you had and deep dives into these industries that you work in. I know it is a vague suggestion but your career seems very modern archetypical cooperate sucess that the fact that you can still expyerirnce all this and come out as someone who can be critical of these systems that make it the most glamourous path is nice to read/ possibly watch. Anyway, sorry for the long comment but might be something useful in it somewhere! Also! A brave new world by huxley is interesting read for me this year that might be fun to read.
If I may - I’ve worked 10 years across 6 totally different disciplines. Polishing most basic and fundamental skills such as problem solving, growth mindset, being able to learn & unlearn was what brought me far. Now I’m pursing yet another different discipline - management consulting. Nonetheless I would love to hear from Matt too!
(1) understand exactly what the job you’re looking to switch to entails, and (2) know how to craft the right story. On 1, your goal should be to get so familiar with what they do that you sound like one of them. This comes from speaking with lots of professionals and doing your homework on the role. This is also where understanding the interview process inside and out falls, as well as technical/case prep. On 2, your goal should be to get the right experience at your current role (e.g., I worked on a technology case while at BCG which helped me transition into tech strategy and ops) and then explaining your desire to transition in a thoughtful way.
About to put your interview tips to the trick later today, but the one thing I'd love is actually landing the interview. With thousands applying to one job how do I stand out? Only recent success I've had consistently is tailoring my email and resume to the hiring manager. Any thoughts?
Good question - I'll keep this one in mind for a future vid. At a high level landing the interview is more about doing what you can on your side (resume, experience, networking, etc.) while also having a healthy respect for the fact that hiring is oftentimes an unpredictable process (you never know what's going on at a company, sometimes jobs are posted that have already been filled) and so even if you're qualified making sure not to take rejections personally. Emailing the hiring manager is a good strategy, I'd continue doing that.
hey Matt, great video and Happy New Year! Can you pls list of soft and hard skills you think helped you into Google and Consulting. What else skills would you recommend to learn in 2025 to be able to get such jobs?
Hit up Sushi Zanmai if you want good quality, cheap sushi. Otherwise I'm not a huge fan of super touristy spots like Shibuya/Shinjuku, but there are lots of things to do in those areas. Cafe Poem is the name of the cozy cafe I went to in this video.

Thanks for the support, and for the reminder about growth through discomfort!

Hey Yashika! Really appreciate the time you took to write out this comment. I'll have to add A brave new world to my reading list this year :)
What strategies did you use when transitioning between disciplines, so that you successfully moved from finance to consulting to IT tech?

You might want to try Nezu Cafe inside Nezu Museum for the ambience and Leaves Coffee (Sumida-ku) for the coffee!
Great suggestion Anya! Will add it to my list.
