Random question but, do you have to ask the firm for permission if you can record in the office like that? (the clips in this video at the office)
Always amazed by how much effort you put into ‘designing’ your content Matt! Great combo between solid advice and aesthetics! And the last 2 minutes at the end of the video is very inspiring!
Thanks Sean, I appreciate it!
Sounds like a long process and requires lots of patience and self belief. I’d love some NYC content of favourite bars, restaurants or places to walk around .
I'll add it to my ideas list!
love this kind of video! keep killing it Matt!
Thanks so much! Appreciate you dropping by
Great video Matt. I also joined a FAANG company a couple of months ago and the amount of products/services to learn along with the acronyms is insane. Always be learning!
Hey Will! Absolutely agree that we have to always be learning - thanks for dropping by!
I have a couple questions about your job hunting process:
- At what point were you ready to leave BCG/ when did you start looking for new opportunities?
- Did you apply/ interview at other companies? Did you get other offers?
- Were you open to relocating?
- Did you ever see yourself becoming a MD/ Partner at BCG or did you always intend to leave at some point?
Thanks for posting this!
Hey David! Appreciate you being here
Such a perfect sharing for me to know more about what is the progress for interview. I like the way you impress ans sharing things. I will use your video for my english oral learning sources for practicing. Always hope your new video to be posted soonest!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video!
I adore your films, and the in-depth conversations that conclude each one. It has given me a great deal of understanding within the field of finance and consultanting. I'm pursuing a master's degree in system engineering, and my coursework and consulting clearly relate to one other. Yourvideos have given me the movitiation to continue working and improve my skills.
Hey Christopher! I'm so glad to hear that
Love your vid. Thanks for an inspiring content
Thanks for stopping by!
thanks for sharing real practical insights on Consulting
Glad it was helpful!
Premium content again from you! This is clearly one my favorite channels, every video is a learning opportunity.
Kindly asking if you can talk about some negotiation tactics you used?
Thanks Lysania! For negotiating I simply spoke to the recruiter saying that I felt I brought a lot to the table and ideally would have liked to see a higher comp package. I leveraged having strong expertise from my IB and Consulting experience and also emphasized what I was leaving on the table at BCG (namely a promotion if I stayed). Hope this helps!
Wow that’s the most extensive job app and interview process I’ve seen!
Indeed it was, Shivani! Excited to try out your game this week
@@matthuang21 that’s awesome!
You are quick with the videos. I needed this info too. Thanks Matt....also, how soon after the assessment did you get called by the recruiter? Were the other rounds of interview based on your original case or were new ones asked?
Recruiter reached out a week or 2 after completing the hiring assessment. The other rounds of interviews were not based on the original case, I think anything is fair game
Thank you matt
of course, hope you are having a great week Noah
Hey Matt, congrats on your new venture! I was looking through your videos and didn't find any that talks about why you were leaving Consulting and how you chose to go for a corporate job (Google) or a PE role? Would be great to hear more about your experience
Hey Quan great question! Will probably do a future video with a full explanation
Could you please do a deep dive into the interview process, particularly case studies?
Will def add it to my queue for future videos!
Hey Matt, great video! Just curious, what do you think of your fifth application, like what makes it different compared to the first few attempts that helped landing on the first round of interviews?
Hi Janice! Although I can't say for certain why my application was selected the fifth time, with each application I made sure to update my resume and tailor it to the specific role I was applying to (S&O roles for different teams at Google). Other than that, I think I also got a bit lucky the 5th time around, since there are so many applicants. Hope this helps!
Hey Matt curious on whether you participated in an on cycle recruiting for PE as a BCG associate ? Also curious if u were headhunted any roles but ultimately turned them down for Google? Would be cool to have visibility into what the headhunter MBB exits look like, if you’re comfortable sharing !
Hey great question! I've done a ton of PE interviews through headhunters (both on and off cycle) and have received an offer to join a NYC-based PE firm in the past which I turned down. If you know how to work with headhunters you do get looks from many top funds (e.g. Bain Capital, Berkshire Partners, Advent, Elliott Management, etc).
Although the pay and prestige is enticing, in the end I realized I wasn't excited by the prospect of PE and pivoted my recruiting efforts. As much as I love finance / business, the process driven nature of M&A/PE investing simply does not excite me and ultimately I don't see myself doing deals/having my schedule dictated by work for the rest of my life.
Do you have any tips on how to best approach the negotiation part of the offer?
Ideally have a competing offer that you can leverage. But if you don't, make a case for why you are overqualified or a high quality candidate for the role (e.g., maybe you have an additional year of experience than what the job description asks for). Also have a range in mind for what you want but ask for the highest end of the range - worst they can say is no.
I'll prob make a vid on this in the future.
do you make films? you’re pretty good at creating videos and stuff 😍
Thanks so much! I don't make any films outside of what's on my channel - I only started a year ago so I'm still learning haha
Hey Matt , very good video . I can do better editing in your videos which can help you to get more engagement in your videos . Pls lmk what do you think ?
A bit out of the blue: do you use any analytics tools for youtube? I ask because I saw mr beast released a toolbox for youtube content creators. Seemed pretty useful.
Interesting! I currently don't use any other analytics tools other than UA-cam Studio
Hello! Thank you so much for making super educational content for people! Can you share your LinkedIn? The link on your channel doesn't work. And may I know about your background? What university did you study at, etc? Sorry but I really want to know my chances🤓
Check my updated bio! Link should work
Haha! No Macbooks or ios in google workplace...
Haha I use a chromebook but the hardest adjustment is actually going from microsoft excel / ppt to google sheets / slides
Have you ever thought about moving to Jersey City so you wouldn’t be in “shoebox” apartment?
Many times...have friends who live there and there is so much more space and fresh air...
@@matthuang21your last apartment kitchen looks like a building in Jersey City too
Statistically, the hardest part of this whole process is getting past the application. Less than 1-2% of applicants get selected to interview. The truth is:
1. You need to be the ideal candidate/ have a good resume - relevant experience at a top company.
2. Timing of your application - because of the sheer demand to work at Google, every new job opening gets enough interest from high-quality applicants within the first 2 weeks. Recruiters will then select the best candidates from that pool. The best role for you will not be available all year round. You should be constantly checking for new openings
