Get them on and get on the ice !
Great review and thanks for the honest reviews. Both you and Justin from beerleaguebumhockeyreview are the only ones i trust with my hockey gear. With regards to Baldetech blades i know you really like them alot but are they that much better then Step, Flair, byonic or JRZ? Won't include Bauer because well they are not good. They should have bought tydan instead. Thanks again. Keep up the good work.
@@eliasdonchos1675 Hey there, thanks and I really appreciate the kind words! Regarding BladeTech steel, my opinion is that they are my favorite. I’ve used Step, Tydan, Bionic, Flare and a multitude of Bauer steels. There are two reasons I like BladeTech the best. First off, the spring in the toe of the steel reduces pressure off joints. That’s important to me due to hip issues. Whether or not the spring makes you faster is debatable. The second thing that I like is that the steel they use is the highest quality of the steels I’ve used. This means less sharpening and more glide. I’ll add one more bonus that I like over Step steel. The shape and height of BladeTech is almost perfect. Step is a little too tall and I have to profile a ton of metal off the toe and heel of the steel and the profile doesn’t always come out correctly. One thing I’ll note about Flare steel is that it really does feel the best on a variety of surfaces. The only thing is that none of the shops in my area can support sharpening it since they have Sparx machines and they don’t have a level tool wide enough to check the edges. Maybe your area is different. Hope that helps!
I’ve got both.. I had a vision that XF would be my game, but shadow are so much more comfort and connected to the ice.. XF hurting my feet in the middle.
@@alexanderhurtig2067 Yeah I kinda experienced the potential for that pain, which is one of the reasons I passed on them.
Thanks for the review and insight. How do these compare to the Hyperlite 2? Your review on the Hyperlite 2 convinced me to switch from CCM FT6 Pro, and I love the Hyperlite (surprisingly). I recently started having lace bite on my Hyperlite 2 after a few months, and seems like it could be due the soft boot and flex causing pressure on the front ankle. I had the same issue with custom True skates, since the boot broke down after 6-8 months. Thanks for all your insight! Best of luck on your new gig! Cheers.
@@cjmixer99 First off I appreciate the best regards! Okay, so I know that the Hyperlite 2 has less volume than the Jetspeeds but it’s a similar design. There’s two things that can impact lace bite. The thickness of your insoles and the types of socks you’re wearing. If you’re just wearing tube socks that’s actually an issue. If you have aftermarket insoles like yellow superfeet, that’ll all cause lace bite. I recommend trying the stock insoles with thin compression socks. If you’re already doing that, purchase gel Bunga pads from Amazon. If that still doesn’t work, you might need to consider selling them and looking at a boot with more volume like the Bauer Shadow or CCM XF Pro. It’s not worth an injury.
@@mongillohockey - Thanks for that insight! Yeah, I tried the gel pads with my custom True skates and didn’t alleviate the pain. I actually use regular tube socks, and recently changed the insole to the new Bauer Aetrex and they’ve been good. It was only until recently I started getting lace bite on my Hyperlite 2, and they’ve been great for the past few months. I’ll go into my shop and try on the Shadow. I’ve just been surprised that my skates only seem to last 6-10 months before they break down. I skate about 3x / week in casual pickup, not high level or serious play. I’m assuming it’s just the downside of the higher performance gear, that seem to break easier
@@cjmixer99 That’s about right. I typically get about 2 years out of skates playing rec hockey and CCM skates typically last the longest, which is irrelevant if they don’t fit properly. I’ve been pretty happy with my Shadows and the tongues are great but require longer to break in. Let me know what you end up doing.
Good luck my man. Thanks for all your work and insight. Youve been helpful over the years and are appreciated.
@@pally73 I really appreciate that! As I mentioned, I’ll still be connected by answering messages. I may even start up again in another six months, but I’ll need to see what my schedule is like.
I actually use True Pro Stock Sticks for the last few years now. Tried different pro stock brands before deciding to switch to True. The durability of a pro stock version of True or any manufacturer will always be better then a retail version. I have broken more retail sticks then pro stock sticks. Reason I went picked True Pro Stock Sticks. True reminds me of the puck feel of a wooden stick/blade.
Hello, it 8/2/2024 and i am just coming across your video. You freaked me out saying your True skate messed up your foot. I am on my second pair of SVH custom skates. I wore Bauer Ultrasonics in between the 2 pair of SVH. My second pair I have had for a couple months, the big toes on both my feet go numb after about 20 minutes of play. I have tried so many different things, curious what you think and what caused your foot injury? Thanks, Brad T.
@@TheBrad605 hey there, so I think you’re saying the True skates are giving you the numb toes? It makes sense to me that the Trues are the problem because of how they’re made. If it’s the Ultrasonic, that makes less sense. If it’s the Trues, it’s likely a combination of how tight they make the skates combined with the aggressive forward pitch. Careful with this as that combo resulted in a torn big toe tendon that became a permanent issue. It’s also a known issue with True and one which they don’t publicly acknowledge. I’d be careful with this. It’s not worth the injury. Give me some more information and we can go from here.
@@mongillohockey yeah it’s the Trues. The Ultrasonics were fine. I love the feel the Trues on the ice, I get a good feel of the ice. I was thinking of trying a softer felt tongue, but not sure that is the solution. They said I should rebake them with tissue in spots to give a little more room. Just not sure where to add the tissue. The skate actually feel and fits good. Just the numb toes. The fact that it’s both feet is what’s strange or good??
@@TheBrad605 In full transparency I obviously can’t diagnose the issue fully over UA-cam, but it’s my belief that one of two things is going on. First, the boots are too short since they make boots relatively tight. The second thing that could cause the numbness is pressure on the top or instep of the foot. If it’s the latter, a thinner tongue could potentially help. If it’s not that, the boots are likely too small in the length. Keep an eye on how the numbness develops. Also, it could be cause for concern if the numbness lasts even after you’re done skating. For me, it started with numb toes, progressed into pain in the ball of my left foot, then pain and numbness when I wasn’t skating and finally the left big toe tendon partially tore. I’m not saying that’s what’s going on for you, but those are some signs.
@@mongillohockey thank you
Do they fit like the Nexus line
@@toddwolfe5659 Hi there, unfortunately nothing really fits like the old 1N and 2N Nexus skates. I think the closest is possibly the Tacks line of skates, but even those are much stiffer. If you want that fit, I’d start off with anything from CCM but try everything you can.
I have been using the Nexus 1N for 8 years, until they finally broke. Just bought a pair of Wide XF pros, and the fit is quite good on the boot. very confortable and spacy. The only cons I would have is, the XF pros are very heavy compared to the nexus. And the pitch is very flat. Comming from a nexus it almost feels like its completely to the back. I have trouble sending my weight forward to skate. The boot is much stiffer and the blade is definately good. Im still wondering if I made the right choice or if I should go for the Shadows. Just have doubt if the Shadows fit 3 will fit my wide foot.
@@AngelSanchez-rw3tv So that’s and easy fix. The CCM XS holder is the culprit about the pitch. All that needs to be done is for you to have 1 degree of forward pitch added to your steel and it’ll feel about the same as the Bauer Tuuk Edge holders. If you don’t already profile your steel, you should consider that, too. Remember, if you profile your steel, you also need to as for 1 degree of forward pitch added. I’ve done a lot of testing with pitch and profile and that’s just what needs to be done.
Prefer CCM skates coming from Bauer skates. Went from Supreme M4 and Matrix to Ribcor 76k and 78k. More flat feeling and more planted solid neutral stance. I tried the 2022 Supreme Matrix and did not like it. Lack of heel lock and stiffness. The 76k that I got for 120 bucks were stiffer for power transfer and had better heel lock than the Matrix! Someday when I am rich like Guitar Slinger I can buy one of these skates that costs over 1k.
Bauer's tuuk lightspeed edge bends to easy while CCM's xs holders last longer, though their boots get indented by their holders. I find Bauer's boots last longer than CCM but overall for me CCM has the best skating experience coming from FT6 pro's. But FT6's go soft faster than ASV PRO. I hope ill get to try these shadows out and there new holders but if those bend then ill switch'em out for the xs holders and see if the 2 skates compined will last longer. Sick review!
Nice feedback! Thank you!
This is good information, you have great insights on gear, unlike most hockey channels which mostly just praise brands for promotions. I made a video comparing every hockey blade brand if ur interested.
Thanks! Yeah, the main reason I started my channel is because I wasn't getting the real information I wanted. Specifically, I wanted to know the thoughts of people who actually paid their own money for stuff. That just wasn't out there at the time. In most cases, I'm spending my hard-earned cash on this equipment, so I'm telling it like I see it. Also, send me a link to your video; I'd like to see it.
@@mongillohockey ua-cam.com/video/1rvfI07SLOQ/v-deo.html I'm not very good at talking to a microphone yet lol but completely agree with you, gear gets expensive and I find forums, people and hockey shops give more insight than most channels.
Brutal review. Meandering, non-concise, perplexing.
@@edgerunnermobileskatesharps Ah come on now; you loved it. 😎
I was the opposite, went for shadows came out with xf pro's...the lowers on the shadows felt cheap to me. plus the Step blacksteel were included for me on the purchase with the XF pros. All and all great vid hope you come back to it in the future good luck with the new job!
LOL Honestly, I kinda think the XF Pro's might be a better skate overall, but you know it's all subjective. I really wish the XFs fit me. At the end of the day, both skates are great as long as it's a proper fit.
Do you need help with videos? There’s already a lack of hockey reviews out there…and since Beer league bum has slowed down…we can’t go down another!!!
@@thomastabacchi5903 Hey there, I appreciate the comment. So, I think Justin might just be slowing down because of external factors. I believe he’ll pick it up again. In my case, I just had a career change that requires me to not only be doing intense physical and mental training for the next 6 months or so, but also to keep a low profile. I may be able to start putting videos out again, but I kinda need to feel that out.
Great input. Thank you

Zero footage of skating with them?
@@HeeyyItsFranklyn Unnecessary in my opinion. I find that trying out sticks and skates isn’t that useful because everyone’s skill level is so different.
Thank you for the review! Not sure how you're managing to switch between the brands since the fit is just not even comparable... Did you have a chance to compare XF pro with FT6 pro?
@@S0larW1nd Thanks for the comment! So I’ve tried both on but not side by side. To my recollection, the FT6 pro was a better fit to me than the XF pros.
So does this mean Bauer isn't coming out with new Vapors this year?
Yes

@@geneh2972 Thank you, sir! It’s been a good ride, but it’s time to shift focus. I’ll come back to my channel if time permits.
I get what your talking about with the volume or “clunkyness” of the tacks line, my foot is wider than average according to the new Bauer fit lab and that’s why I went for the tacks because I’ve heard they were meant for a greater volume foot. I’m so exited for the new XF Pros! I have the AS-590s right now and I’ve used them for like 2 years and now the boot is starting to soften up and loose it’s stiffness, is this common or are mine just weird?
Nope, that’s common for your boots to do that. My FT4 Pros are tired! I’m actually headed to my shop in Canada on Saturday 6/22 to buy new skates. I’m guessing I’ll end up with the XF skates, but will try the Shadow skates and everything else I can. I’ll be reporting back with a video. Supposedly the XF pro is unreasonably stiff but we shall see.
@@mongillohockey ok thank you!!!
Awesome perspective per usual. I wish my rink played Pink Floyd during pub hky haaa
lol you like that , huh? Of course they were blasting it at volume 11. It was hard to concentrate. Lol
The W43 is Bauer's Laine Curve both will be lie 6 which on the pure hockey web it will be labeled as the Palola which was Laine's teammate in Tappara who made the curve. So the W43 will have very fast-rising shots you will get a lot of power on the shots. The reason why its so hard to find info on the curve is because the W43 name is brand new normally its called the Palola or the Laine.
Oh wow! Super cool story! Thanks for sharing! I’ve got a buddy who wants a Laine curve, I’ll tell him about this option.
I’ve noticed from browsing online that warrior offers 63 inch sticks as well as their standard length sticks for some models. I think it’s a whole different sku
You got one stealing your puck, another flinging yourr stick...rugged bunch at your rink.
lol totally. Can’t do anything with these knuckleheads!
I'd love to have one of those tall p28 s, but, man, I have a hard time justifying full price sticks for my grade D game and finances. I just ordered a pair of the Bladetechs. Maybe I'll treat myself to one of these for Xmas
I totally hear you. I really think you’ll like the BladeTech stick. It’s really good. I’d say it’s the second best low kick stick besides the Trigger 7 and 8 pro sticks.
Retailers can order standard length or extra length. That's part of booking orders.
That’s correct. I saw that option when I was ordering my stick.
Dahlin is closer to a P90T rather than a P92.
That grip is called pig skin.
63 flex is the lowest you can go with a senior shaft.
lol I should’ve known you’d know all of this crap! I’m digging it!
Since these companies leave room for improvement by withholding features for the next line.. I Have some wishes for the FT7 line.. Hoping they put memory foam on top of the foot (tongue) feels like a real missed feature. the little piece of memory foam on the very top of the tongue makes no sense.
It’s a good point. I don’t know why the whole foot isn’t totally wrapped in firm but comfortable padding.
I haven’t brought new skates for over 10years Just brought the Bauer mach skates and they feel great around my toes area Only problem I have is they feel loose and the tongue feels extremely stiff and having pain on my shins feels like the tounge is too high and has no give not allowing me any movement what can I do to resolve this problem?
First off, thanks for the comment. I’m guessing you did what most do when they haven’t bought skates in a long that, which is buy Bauer because you had Bauer. I’m guilty of that, too. Unfortunately skates fit nothing like they used to. My honest recommendation is to return them unless you don’t have that option. I’m guessing you might fit a Vapor or CCM Jetspeed FT6 Pro skate better. What else did you try on before buying the Machs? Unfortunately, the issues you’re describing are more of a conflict between your foot shape and boot design. Get back to me on my questions and if you can’t return your skates I’ll try to help tweak the fit with you.
@@mongillohockey Thanks for the message, this is exactly the situation it’s a shame skates theses days are so stiff, unfortunately I believe if you have worn the skates they are un-returnable. I haven’t baked them as of yet but didn’t have a problem with foot pain just the length of the tongue and the stiffness of them, any advise that might help would be greatly appreciated
@@jaycox6125 Well, I think heat molding will at least make a significant improvement but won’t change fit profile. You might consider your local shop heat mold them but do it the same way they would if they were baking custom True skates. All that really means is wrapping them with cellophane to get a better wrap. That will also include the tongue. You really should at least inquire about a return. I’ve successfully returned seven pairs of skates that were heat molded. I know CCM lets you return skates for up to 90 days if you were the original owner.
@@mongillohockey Had training tonight and skates felt much better , I laced all the way up but missed the 2nd from top eyelet to get more felx in the skate and didn’t use leg tape too far down the leg to not restrict leg movement, plus a decent cut on the blade also helped much happier
@@jaycox6125 OK good! Maybe they just need a little time to break in? The custom guys at Bauer told me that skates from them need approximately 10 hours of ice time before they start feeling OK.
Was waiting for this one!
Yep! I wanted to get some decent time with it. It’s a really nice stick for dirt cheap. I’d buy another one.
@@mongillohockey that’s dope. I’ll watch full thing shortly :-D
I broke two within 6 days. Albeit I played a lot games in those 6 days, I have never broken two sticks that closely together in the EXACT spot (on the hosel near the blade). Luckily I only had to pay $300 cdn from my local retailer. Sticking with pro stocks again as I cannot stomach paying $430 for a hockey stick. I did enjoy my brief time with the stick, though.
Yeah I feel ya. I’ve been pretty happy with the performance of Bauer sticks but I haven’t gotten one to last longer than three weeks since the Nexus Geo.
Mine lasted 3 months lol…but I’m more of a dangler not rly clapping it much 😂
@@aynrandfan7454 Man I’m jealous! If mine lasted that long I’d buy a bunch of them. Lol
Is there a discount code?
To my knowledge there isn’t a discount code, but post it here if you find one.
Do they have any kick point options?
At this time low kick is the only option. I’d love to try a mid kicker if they had one. This is an excellent stick!
@@mongillohockey I'll probably pick up one in a p28. You mentioned the Sherwood Rekker. I've seen those on sale at a decent price. Any good?
@@joeschmo2693 Yes, the Rekker sticks are a great value and a pretty good shooting low kick. It’s got my blessing for sure.
Hey thanks for this skate comparison! So just to be clear. Did you say the CCM has a narrow to normalish heel with a wider toe box compared to the Bauer? Ive been trying vapor and machs. Skates hurt. Im looking for a solution.
Yo! So I should caveat my comments by saying that I made this video before the Hyperlite 2, Mach and FT6 pro were available. That said, the simple answer that I can verify for certain is that the original Hyperlite was longer than its counterpart in the FT4 pro. For instance, the original Hyperlite in an 8 fit 3 was slightly (maybe quarter size?) longer than the 8 wide/high volume FT4 pro. That said, the FT4 pro had more volume EVERYWHERE else! I have tried the Mach on and they’re waaaay to snug everywhere no matter the fit. I have not tried the Hyperlite 2 yet, but plan to the end of June. That said, I have it on good authority that the Hyperlite 2 is now a shorter boot and probably more comparable to CCM skates in length. I have tried on the FT6 pro and thought they were nice but maybe fit slightly tighter than the FT4 pro? The bottom line is that CCM boots provide the most volume possible in the heels and forefoot right now. Bauer boots (even in custom) seem to be built for scrawny bony little feet. One last thing I’ll add is that the CCM XF pro skates come out in June. They may be just right on size. I did a sneak peak video on them, so check it out. Hope that helps!
its the totalone type build without tac spiral mid kick stiff blade
How did you find that info out? I could actually see that being pretty accurate.
I tried it once. I didn't like how it covered up the air vents. Gave the rest away.
Bummer. At least you gave it a rip. I wonder if that an issue on certain helmets but not on others. What helmet did you have it on?

Ok…I’m sorry I have to offer some perspective of reality here in the comments. Good on your for being.a student of the game and lover of ice hockey. That said - you admittedly have zero professional training (youth or other). So an adult….improperly self-learning to power skate…. So unless u are a super, naturally gifted athlete…what’s the point. Profiles help those that can’t really skate??? Ok. Fine. No issue there. Just state that in your title. “I can’t really skate. But here’s my opinion on profiles”. That’s fair.
Hey there, all reasonable perspectives are welcome and yours is exactly that. I appreciate that you provided an alternative perspective, but kept it civil. It’s true that I’m not a pro. I am a retired referee who had legit power skating lessons, but it’s a different style of skating than hockey, as you likely know. As I noted in the video, my perspectives on profiles come from my own testing and from letting a significant amount of novice to advanced level rec players test a variety of profiles. It’s clear they had a positive impact on all but one guy I know.
Hey, thanks for great review!! I had a chance to try on FT4 PRO - WIDE and suprisingly the boot was kinda shallow for me (I'd hardly pass the "pencil test"). I do have quite high instep, that's for sure, but not extramely high. How did you put up with the depth of the boot? Thanks
Thanks for the comment! To your question, the depth has always been borderline with the Jetspeeds. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything out there at the time that was better. If you need extra depth, there is only one skate on planet earth that has more and that’s the ASV Pro Supertacks. Even if you go custom, it could still be a challenge to get more volume.
Curious how does someone get to test all of these different profiles without having a friend who owns a pro shop? legit would love to try 4 different profiles to see what would work best for me but no idea how to do it. (I'm in Vancouver..)
My honest answer is that it’s tough. In my case, I was lucky. That said, my recommendation is for you to contact my profiling guy in Pennsylvania. He’s a great resource for you to talk with over the phone and he ships to Canada. His name is Jason Binnie and he owns Binnie’s skate sharpening and equipment repair. If you use my discount code of “GSH15” you’ll get 15 percent off your order. Tell him what you want to feel on the ice. Agility, speed or whatever. He’ll help you from there. He’ll also re profile your steel if you don’t like it. www.binnieshockey.com
Yeah. I would love to try it too. But how? Wouldn't want keep reprofiling my blades. That would just wear them out fast.
Let’s go devils!!! Thanks for the great reviews. I’m a bigger guy and currently have the tacks as590. I notice they’re still kinda tight in the toe box. Do the as3 or newer as5 have more toe box room?
Thanks for the kind words! To answer your questions, the ASV Pro in the wide fit system has the largest and most voluminous toe cap and boots out of any retail model skate available on the market. As an FYI, the replacement for the ASV pro skates are called the XF Pro and come off 6/23. The will have less volume in the toe cap and boot.
Increase ur hollow to avoid hip issues. 3/4 to 1 inch
Switch to 3/4 hollow to avoid another hip issue. Studies show correlation now
Thanks for the view and comment, unfortunately that’s not an accurate statement in my case. That said, I 100 percent agree that a ROH that provides more glide will always put less pressure on joints.
Bad take Evander Kane Jamie Benn both used this and it’s just a P92 variant
What is your shoe size? I noticed your skate is size 8 wide.
I typically wear a 10.5 or maybe an 11 wide shoe.
I typically wear a 10.5 or maybe an 11 wide in shoes.
2-3 sizes down seems normal. Don't know why manufacturers always say 1-1.5 !
@@jeromeo12 Yeah I’ve noticed that too. I personally don’t think manufacturers have a great way to fit most people either. I’m kind of an outlier with how much heel depth I need in a skate, but no one makes the proper size skates without going full NHL-style custom.
