I blame education for the lack of public servants. When I was in elementary school in the 90s, there was an effort to promote character and citizenship. By high school, the focus was almost entirely on making leaders, but you have to be able to follow before you can lead. Now schools create activists. Public schools should be focused on creating citizens who are capable of being public servants.

The problem with the idea of doing no forest management in the name of keeping the forest natural is that the forests were unnaturally fire suppressed for over 100 years, causing the catastrophic fires we have today. Doing nothing is not keeping anything natural because we arent starting with a "natural" forest.

Hello John. I do not recommend people see Nosferatu. I felt it was the typical 21st century remake with too much sex and too much blood and special effects. Give me Bela Lugosi any day! Why don’t you instead recommend the stunning Italian movie Rapito, the retelling of the story of Edgardo Mortara.

Thanks so much for recommending Rapito, can't believe I've not heard of this film! I was actually excited by John mentioning there's a new production of Nosferatu having seen several others before, and I have a toy Nosferatu, so I'm committed, haha. Werner Herzog's version is my favorite.

Why is Bass in Ghana? Is this about essential LA business or private and if so why violate progressive demands for reducing flying carbon points? Likewisd if Biden is in LA to meet a new great grandchild do taxpayers cover all the round trip entourage? The hypocrisy of progressives when they want to travel for personnel joy is galling. I wonder if pols are milking taxpayers for personal gain.

Trump speaks loud and carries a big stick. It's hilarious watching political pundits trying to keep up with a real leader who knows what he's doing and has been planning this for four years. They aren't used to it because Biden was hide'n and he did nothing, and couldn't utter a full sentence without tripping over himself. John, just stop. You have no idea what Trump is trying to do. You can't keep up and you only see things at face value. He's not even president yet!

The dark shadow to Seth’s “‘The Economist’ Effect” is the “Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect” coined by Michael Crichton: “Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. […] In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

American voters have an advantage over voters in a parliamentary system - we can vote a split ticket. It is possible for Americans to have a government with an executive of one party and the legislature composed of a different party. This can work to help prevent the government from going too far in either direction.

I enjoyed Christine Rosen's comments today about experts, or so-called experts, and fluoride in drinking water. It reminded me of an article discussing the use of rare events and turning them into mass hysteria without defining the level of uncertainty that the events have. The paper terms this concept as "Apocalypse Forecasting." Environmentalists commonly use this tactic in the realm of global climate change. Apocalypse forecasting was discussed in a 2021 article by Rode and Fischbeck in "International Journal of Global Warming." (Vol. 23, No. 2, pp.191-211). The abstract reads (sorry for the length): "Apocalyptic forecasts are unique. They have, by definition, no prior history and are observed only in their failure. As a result, they fit poorly with our mental models for evaluating and using them. However, they are made with some frequency in the context of climate change. We review a set of forecasts involving catastrophic climate change-related scenarios and make several observations about the characteristics of those forecasts. We find that mentioning uncertainty results in a smaller online presence for apocalyptic forecasts. However, scientists mention uncertainty far more frequently than non-scientists. Thus, the bias in media toward coverage of non-scientific voices may be ‘anti-uncertainty’, not ‘anti-science’. Also, the desire among many climate change scientists to portray unanimity may enhance the perceived seriousness of the potential consequences of climate catastrophes, but paradoxically undermine their credibility in doing so. We explore strategies for communicating extreme forecasts that are mindful of these results."
