I'm very pro-pardon power and think you just need to take any negatives on an "it'll come around" basis. Societies need a final hail mary style mechanism, here and there, as a way of acknowledging that no system is perfect and keeping all parties engaged to the final moments, which is especially true in a society where civic engagement is necessary. Having a functionality such as the pardon is sort of a kitsch acknowledgement of the system's imperfections, like a Jeff Koons mirror object, but also can serve as a reversal on imperfections. The NFL has the right to hail mary, despite obvious flaws and statistical unlikeliness, so that all people have a reason to stay engaged until the very last second. Every system needs this. The Jan 20 pardons of the Jan 6 political prisoners is exactly what the pardon power is for. The protesters were prosecuted and given draconian sentences to demonize and intimidate working class republicans. The fact that Matt and others in the establishment continue to be offended by that protest rally on their holy ground is very discouraging.
Hate to drone on about pardons...but who to cast in a yet-to-be named ABC Movie of the Week for characters William Schulder, Esther Schulder, the Prostitute and Democratic Party donor, Charles Kushner?...And would the ratings for this Jew-hate infighting drama be higher than a Schumer-Netanyahu HBO West Wingy series?
