For The Love of Greatest Hits- Why They Are an Important Part of My Collection
Переглядів 4827 годин тому
Some collectors have great disdain for greatest hits. A greatest hits ruins the integrity of what the artist was trying to do with that album. How can you truly understand an artist if you dont collect his actual albums and listen to them the way he intended that they be listened to? Call me a rebel, but I love greatest hits. First they give me my favorite songs, they take up less room, they ca...

Chain Reaction Records Store Tour -Lakewood CO- Lots of Metal and Punk but so much more

When I looked up Chain Reaction Records they said they specialize in metal and punk. I almost did not go as i dont really buy or know anything about metal music I said, what the heck, other people who watch the video love that genre so I went. Very glad I did, I found some great records at very fair prices. It definitely was heavy into the metal music but the manager was extremely friendly and ...

That's a gorgeous town. I've never seen so many amazing titles at an antique mall. What a beautiful setting. I love all of those old cubbyholes and cabinets. I could've spent hours in that store. Have a great weekend, Steve.

Mike, looks like you could've picked up a lot of dead things in that store too. That record by The Beat that you flicked past is a power pop shed burner!! I don't lose my mind over The Divinyls but those early ones aren't bad. I paid way too much for that Blondie album because it was part of that Numero box set that came out last year, maybe this year. It's actually a pretty sweet box with all the bells and whistles, but it does take up a lot of real estate. I figure with prices Mike, you win some you lose some. Cheers...Mike

hey Steve, as soon as you flipped to that pink Lyres record I said “grab that!” and you did. At $4 bucks it’s a steal, even if you have it already. You’ve saved me a vinyl hunting stop when I’m in Leadville next week, but I might go in anyway to check out the pelts 😂.

Steve, I’d need some oxygen that high up! They have some great metal. Some prices so so, some prices may be good depending on condition. That Scorpions Crazy World is a 90’s record. If it’s OG could be crazy price but I couldn’t see it in the video. Mrs. Zonkman and I are going nuts. To see that Vixen album also. Those are all good records. Not normal crap in antique stores. I don’t have many greatest hits, because the music I’m mostly into these days aren’t exactly topping the charts lol, but I love a good comp album. Other than artist intent, I think especially in the record collecting world some people don’t like greatest hits because all songs are copied from master tapes of the respective albums to a tape copy, and lord forbid if the songs aren’t cut from the OG master tape….

I'm not really into greatest hits albums - though, I do have that Foo Fighters. I do have a few but generally, if I'm not interested enough to buy their albums, I'm not interested enough to buy their greatest hits. Sure, not being into greatest hits has cost me money but not being into live albums has saved me money. And I'm not into bootlegs which has saved me even more money. When you consider the massive amount I'm saving, buying the records I do is hardly costing me anything at all.

"Let 'er highball, engineer!" What's happenin', SC? When you told me about your youth spent riding the rails, it made me think of the Great Depression. I know you're older, but you're not that old. I wonder if you've heard "U.S. Highball" by Harry Partch. Harry spent nine years riding the rails as a hobo during the Great Depression. Then in 1941 when he rode the rails, he took a notebook that he used to write down what he encountered, including what the hobos said. The only alterations he made were to "profanity as repetitive as the sound of wheels on the track." The notebook became the basis for "U.S. Highball." In order to get the sounds he wanted for his compositions, he built the instruments himself. I think "U.S. Highball" is, in its own oddball way, up there with Rhapsody in Blue. Partch called it "the most creative piece of work I have ever done." It was recorded in Wisconsin and released on GME records in 1946. GME records was a label run by Dr. Warren Gilson, the man whose home "U.S. Highball" was recorded in. It came out as three red vinyl 78s. According to Discogs: "Pressed in an edition of only 100 copies and sold by word of mouth with no advertising. Even at the modest original price of $6.75 per set, it took a few years for the pressing of 100 copies to sell out." None have ever been sold on Discogs, though seven people say they have it. Who knows? I suppose the nature trail near where I live is like my "U.S. Highball." Part of it was once an old railroad. Like you, I do distance running. Nothing on the order of the Leadville 100 though. And it costs $425 and $475 just to enter that race. You pay $$$ to be tortured. Last year I ran a marathon every month for a year. I call them Romanathons. I'm not fast. Running is a way, like record collecting, to channel my addictive/obsessive nature. "I spoke / To a man down at the tracks / And I ask him / How he don't go mad" I have met many oddballs on the trail. One guy told me, "The way they make black people here is by dipping white people in chocolate." He then added, "That's f!;*ed up." It made me think of "Chocolate City" by Parliament. Imagine if you had dark skin and were sitting next to this guy on a train. He leans over and licks your arm. "Just wanna check." Good grief. Hopefully, it doesn't cause you too much grief to read my missives. Till next time, stay groovy. "You exclamation mark bum! Get your semicolon asterisk out o' these yards"

Roman I love your thoughts. As I said they should be made into a book What an interesting story about the hobo. I wish he had written a book about those adventures, that would have been fantastic. $475 to torture your body, OMG. I never ran a marathon. I was in very good shape but never felt good enough shape to run a decent time. I wasn’t winning races but often I could get a medal I just never had the dedication to properly train to run a marathon. My hats off to you, incredible running one a month, I am always amazed at people like you who can do that. I’m not going to go lick an African American, wouldn’t that make an interesting reaction lol.

I'm a big fan of a solid greatest hits package. Sly and the Family Stone is a great example of a collection that's gold from start to finish. I'm glad you included the Smashing Pumpkins! The Immaculate Collection is a great representation of Madonna’s 80s output.. Mr. Carlson, we'll have to have a conversation. I didn't see a greatest hits album for the jazz genre. Mike, I have a lot of compilations, but I don't have many greatest hits records. It's probably because I don't have many bands that had hits. I love 60's garage rock comp's, 70's punk comp's and OG ska comp's. All of those genres were much more a singles scene than full length albums, although admittedly of course there was some classic records come out of all of those scenes too, but you know what I'm trying to say in my inarticulate way Mike. I can't help but notice a lot of your GH's are middle of the road dudes & dudettes (ok maybe not NWA), which really goes against the grain of all of your magnificent OG punk, African funk & psych, shoegaze, 60's psych, blues & on & on albums. Please explain Mike? Foo Fighters & The Eagles are the beige of rock. Abba please tell me it isn't so! ..sorry but you know the old saying "I don't know much about art but I know what I hate" You're a complicated man Mike. Cheers...Mike

Mike, good observation on middle of the road bands being mostly greatest hits. I had not thought about that but you are right. I really don’t need the albums from those bands as I find the more exciting music to be in post punk, punk, shoegaze, world etc…. That is the music that excites me most and may never have a hit. I just don’t really look for classic rock, too much good stuff out there. When it comes to Compilations, Rhino has made the best CD box sets to collect all the cool singles. Save the space for the cool new music

My favorite Pink Floyd album is “Echoes”, the 2 disc collection. Tell that to a PF diehard and they lose their ****.😂

Fully agree on starting out with greatest hits. If you don't know the bands/artists music. There's many bands that i only need a greatest hits. Sometimes though there's the problem of the hit single being deceiving. I always remember buying the The Singles by the Pretenders and loving it. Then i bought their first album. The three singles off the album are nothing like the rest of the songs. Guess was i surprised to listening to the album and finding another band within them. Now i do think it's great, but i had to get over the first feeling of being taken for a fool. Pasi

Great point Pasi, an album can show another side of a group. At least the greatest hits started you on a new journey, shall we say a new rabbit hole was opened for you

Thanks for the shout out Steve! GH packages (for me) are for band that I do not need the entire discography. CCR would be a perfect example, as I do not own any studio albums of theirs, the hits is perfect. And I am in full agreement, bands like Floyd do need a GH package, so many of their albums have a theme, that picking and choosing songs just doesn't work. Cheers!

Yeah I also have the one from CCR Steve. I use to have their albums but again I always pulled their greatest hits. I did add an acronym at the very end just for you Steve lol

I know some people are a bit sniffy about greatest hits but they are an important part of my collection. Sometimes it's nice to have all the singles together in one place. And "best of's" are a great way to discover an artist that might have passed you by. Nice video Steve.

Mike, I love having all the hits together because they are the songs that really catch my attention. CDs are great especially for the vehicle for playing greatest hits.

I am not so find of greatest hits actually. It is often the most selling songs and made them more commercial and less artistic. But I understand the problem with space ....

Hasse, a greatest hits is very profitable for a record company. It is just so expensive to try to get a catalog now unless you go to CD.

Hey Steve, this is a really informative primer for newbies out there ! Do you remember when 'Greatest Hits' were a 'badge of honor' - that's when you knew you had a worthwhile artist ! This video has set me thinking... what would a 'Greatest Hits' of your channel's content contain? .... 'Steve Carlson's Greatest Hits'..... the mind boggles at the possibilities !! 😛

lol Gary, that would be a lot of videos to go through ! Greatest Hits have started many journeys into music for me There did seem to be more of them when we were younger Maybe that is because of radio. It is hard to buy a catalog from an artist now

My only gripe with compilation type releases is the continuity suffers. One song differs in sound quality/SQ from the next, depending where it is sourced from. I have some pretty good comps though. Greatest hits can suffer that same fate. 👍. Nice collection my friend 😃

Hello Steve; Greatest Hits, you could compile a video of your own record buying scores, mistakes, & flubs. Titled hits & misses. Nice selection of greatest hit & best of collections. The sets with analytical & comprehensive notes are the best. Good video. The hits edition. Take care, Tina & Pat!~
