    Hi, Steve. When you first opened this video, I felt like I was listening to MYSELF! I have pondered the very same question because I have no family members who have an interest in my record collection, albeit smaller than your collection of 3,000, unless you count all of my 45’s! My wife, like yours, has no interest in it, nor do either of my two daughters. I am now 62 and I own a large number of Elvis Presley albums and singles. Those are the ones that are nearest and dearest to me because of all the years building that collection. In about 10 to 12 years, I will probably sell everything, including the Elvis records, on eBay because I have built up a great reputation on there. Until then, I’m just going to enjoy the music!

      That is fantastic that you have built a reputation in an online community. That is good advice. Maybe my grandkids will be interested in the music but I don’t want to hold my breath. I will start trimming it back when I stop working for my son. You just would like to see the albums go to someone who loves music

    You are far more self-aware than most record collectors I have met. You are asking the right questions - I think we are going to see a flood of cheap vinyl hitting the market in the very near future. Most people were only collecting performatively for the internet, and now its losing its popularity they will all dump their collections at the same time.

    Hi Steve, first time visiting your channel, Interesting topic. I am 79 and started selling some of my 10K plus LP collection 3 years ago. The path I took, and am still on, consists of multiple approaches. The first 2K I sold in bulk to a record store owner. I got an Ok price, but obviously could have done better through other methods. However, I needed to reduce my inventory quickly since I was moving and downsizing my living space. Since relocating, I have gotten involved in multiple regional record shows which have worked out well with low and midrange priced records. I also joined and participate with a record collectors group in my area and sell records at a monthly event. Both of these venues allow me to pick up a few dollars while having some fun interacting with people who share my passion for records. For the higher dollar records, I've found that consigning them to a reputable online dealer has worked very well for me. The one I use is Carolina Soul out of Durham, NC.
    Fortunately for me my children are into vinyl and I have started giving them a lot of records they like already. However, some of my collection will stay with me until I am gone. I have priced those as best I could so that they will have an idea as to what they are worth.
    So, that is my journey so far.

    • @stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147
      @stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147  2 місяці тому

      Gerald, wow, that was some great points and I love your approach. Carolina Soul does consignment, no wonder why they always have such great stuff. Doing record shows would be nice as long as you don’t spend more than you sell. These are terrific suggestions, thank you for taking the time to share them with me. I hope you will continue to watch my channel

      @stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Hey Steve, I've subscribed and will definitely be checking back in. You are right about the perils of spending at the record shows some vendors fall into. I made up my mind about 5 years ago that I was not buying anymore records as I either have or have had every record that I have ever wanted. In 1958 my mom bought me four 78's for Christmas and I still have 3 of them. So I have been collecting a long time. I also have an extensive CD collection and will sometimes purchase an individual new release from one of the streaming services. However, I gladly get to spend a good deal of my record selling dollars spoiling my grandkids. Lol!

    Hi Steve, Great points. This video has really made me think too. I have no family at all, just lost my dog to death, and have about 12,000+ LPs, and 2,000+ CDs and a few hundred singles/EPs. Real problem. I have no idea what to do. As for giving them away or selling them to friends, i don't have enough friends who have interest in music. Record fairs really are hit and miss. I used to sell at fairs here and found that things sold some days and not others. I'm like you, I just keep on buying and at the same time think about selling everything. I have thought about selling my house and renting a store with a connected residence and selling my collection that way, but that involves too many hours and a lot of work and at 69 and happily retired I really don't want to go back into work again, and our pension laws eliminate any pension I get if i sell too many records. I have no idea but this video has thrown the late Miss Rotty among the cats. my Lawyer, who is a personal friend as well sand is the executor of my will basically has said that the house, cars and chattels he can deal with, but he has no idea about what the records are worth, and he can deal with them so it's problem that I have never really thought too much about but will now give thought to. Thanks Steve.......

      Peter, someone said to put the records in the will to be sold with a medium price and a lower price. This could be used for an estate sale. If it is in discogs you can get an idea of its worth. Take them in small batches to an estate sale auction house. I live in a large city that has at least 7 record stores I can visit. These stores along with ebay'ers bid on them like crazy.
      I thought I had a chance to win a few auctions. I've seen bids go $2400 on a box with the Beatles this year. I thought who's paying these prices? On a Saturday I made a visit to one on my favorite record stores and in the new bin were about 5-10 records that I was hoping to win in the auction. And on the walls were the Beatles albums that were the hot items in the auction.
      I can't complete with these heavy hitters on these online auctions.
      Try that out if you're able.

    I think about this all the time. I really don’t want to burden someone with trying to sell my collection if I pass away. Just as we’ve seen the artists/ musicians that actually wrote and created this music are selling their publishing- that seems like a pretty good indication for people with large music collections to part with their albums/ cds as well.
    Let’s face it, with each generation that goes by the bulk of one’s collection sadly becomes obsolete.. the emotions that were baked into all of that music is what makes it so valuable to the owner.

    Very timely video for me.
    I’m 77 (Nov 30), and have 2,000+ vinyl records and 8,000+ CD, SACD, DVD-A, etc.
    I’ve informed my sons that when I depart this life, Mike at The In Groove (my local record store) will give them accurate price information and purchase if they decide to liquidate. After all, a very sizable chunk of the collection comes from The In Groove.

      @ about 8 years ago I was in a record store and I was looking for original Kuti albums and I asked the employee what would be a good album to get. He had just got in a two record set that had Paul Ngozi Family- Day of Judgement I bought it When I popped that on the stereo I was blown away by how exciting the music was. Talk about hard rock! I was hooked. I bought Zamrock CD compilations. Eventually Zamrock began to be reissued and VMP put out a Zamrock box set. A person who I know had a record store that had a person in Zambia looking for records. I then got originals of Riki Iligonge, Witch, Keith Mlevhu and a few more. Very expensive, not in good shape but they were rare. I have a nice collection of this genre and the music is so exciting. I just got the Ngozi album on record store day. Zamrock didn’t last long but wow did some incredible albums come from it. Someday I will do a video on my collection. I have almost all the Analog Africa albums and a large collection of Fela Kuti, mostly reissue.

      Well I figured they're the ones who are into human sacrifice and blood magic, they love their gore with the image of an almost naked guy bleeding to death nailed to a cross in every church, they dig suffering, they eat the flesh and drink the blood of their God who's a Jewish zombie in some weird ritual every time they meet.
      And they all wear a tiny torture device around their neck.
      What's more Metal than that?
      So it's gotta be the perfect place for it I think.

    You briefly touched on this during our last meeting, this is a very thought provoking topic for sure. Not something I've actively thought much about myself. I don't think about the value of my collection ever basically, but it does become important that my family doesn't get screwed over getting rid of it when I'm gone. Selling it all off at once would be easiest for anyone, but yeah you're definitely going to cut into what you could get when selling individually. But then selling individually, it can take forever and ever. Stuff to think about for sure. I'd definitely be up for helping you out selling, auctioning, whatever (a WINGMAN, if you will) whenever you feel like getting rid of things.

    This topic recently came back to the forefront for me as well, after enduring the painfully arduous task of relocating my entire 10,000+ record collection as part of an out of state move. My oldest daughter is my ONLY hope at the moment, for keeping my record collection within the family. My other two kiddos are too little to know whether or not there’ll be any interest when they’re older (I’m holding out hope that there will be). My wife wants nothing to do with any part of it, though I’ve at least somewhat convinced her to refrain from having Goodwill come out and take it all away, knowing that I’ve got a fair amount of high value records within my collection… but either way, I think it’s important for all of us collectors to do what we can, WHILE we can, to curate and tighten our collections down to the cream of the crop, down to what we actually listen to and enjoy, and make arrangements to move the rest along to others who might appreciate it more. A great topic regardless, and one worth giving due attention to for all of us within the VC 😎🤘🏼

I often wonder what to do with this as I am getting older and wonder if this is a burden to my family members. I told myself I would collect until I was 60 and then stop. I have loved music my entire life and am a born collector, so I don't know if I could have ever not done this. I hope my music will go to someone or persons who can love it, appreciate it, and find joy in it as I did, but I guess everyone has to find their own answer and path that suits them. What I did was sold my collection as a whole and put an ad in the marketplace on Facebook for my area and it didn’t take long to sell it. I hope this helps!

    Value is so relative and unpredictable, as we all know. I've owned albums that went through phases of being very valuable to being worthless over time in the fickle marketplace, and vice-versa. So I wouldn't worry about any of that in relation to what your wife does with them after you pass on. I told my wife to just donate my collection to a favorite charity and not worry about it. As for the getting-older-so-should-I-purge? question, well, I am in the tiny minority that responds with "yes". Over the past few years I have slowly purged my collection down to around 200 albums that I have LOVED to listen to over the years and decades, regardless of mood, etc., and I listen to them on a constant rotation. I always enjoy my listening times immensely now, and I don't miss the ol' "naah, I don't really want to hear this album after all" routine that used to frustrate me when I had thousands of albums to choose from. People ask, "what if you regret purging an album?".....well, that just never really happens to me any more. At my age I trust myself and know myself well. I want every day of listening to music to end with me saying to myself, "aaah, that was so great....if that ends up being the last album I ever hear in my life, I am happy with that".

      Fantastic comment, I think the key is to have a set plan for what to do with them. I salute you for your purging. How did you decide move them out. Did you sell them or bring them to a record store for credit That is a lot of records to sell off. Very curious how you did this. Once I finish working for my son I plan to start paring it down. Even now I question my purchases and wonder will I still really like it in a couple of years

    • @CalicoSilver
      @CalicoSilver Місяць тому

      @@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I mostly donate them, Steve, or if they have any significant value I will trade them in for credit (although I buy far far more books than albums these days). Back in the early days of eBay and such, I enjoyed using auctions to sell off stuff, but I don't want to bother with one-at-a-time sell-and-ship any more. Also, don't get me wrong: I still LOVE to discover a new album/artist that I can resonate with, and I am constantly checking out new (to me) stuff via UA-cam in the hopes of finding new (to me) gems, in which case I will enjoy buying their physical albums. For example, a few years ago I finally discovered My Bloody Valentine and loved them, so I bought their albums.

    I've heard from a couple different people that they've made agreements with fellow VC members to sort of take control of the sell off of their collections so that the family doesn't need to worry about it. Or you could connect with a record store and maybe have them come out and give you a bid and have an agreement on an amount that way your family can just call them to come pick it up and cut them a check. I focus on quality, buy really intentionally, only what I really, really love from my favourite bands. So when the time comes, I can sell, or donate without too much trouble. Dance to them with your loved ones. Share them. Pick up a guitar and play along to them or like I do have a record on while you draw and paint. Thank the Lord for blessing you with them. But if they weren’t. My two cents is keep what you love and makes you happy until your last day on this lovely planet. But find yourself a local record shop that you trust. On your passing they are often willing to come directly to you and purchase your whole collection and your family will get the money. Will they get absolute top dollar on every album probably not. But what they will get is a hassle free experience of not having to try to move it somewhere to sell it or spend a bunch of time trying to sell it piece by piece. Honestly, this is something I've given a lot of thought to, because I am "of that age" too, and I don't want to burden my wife with trying to figure out what's what or how to get rid of it if I should suddenly pass.
    My first order of business was to catalog the most valuable records into Discogs (which was a truly tedious task). Then I put a color sticker on the protective sleeves of the good stuff to let her know that it's on my Discogs list and probably worth the effort of selling on ebay. And I told her to sell the rest of the collection in bulk to a local record store and take whatever's left over to Goodwill.
    Obviously this won't get the maximum money, but it's a good tradeoff between having to try to sell everything one by one or getting scammed by a low-balling cherry picker.

    • @franksmusic2880
      @franksmusic2880 2 місяці тому

      @ I started on Discogs buying first, then I decided to try and sell some of my albums around 2014. I started out with selling about fifty albums, all in vg+ to nm- records. It’s a little slow at the beginning but if you post a few hot titles, the fish will bite, you will start to see sales. You just need to have some patience at the beginning. Once you have sold ten to fifteen records all positive feedback, you’re on your way. Discogs has forums to learn how to set it up, the setting of the prices is a little tricky at first.

    Great video, Steve. I mentioned this briefly in my last video. I've asked a trusted friend to take care of my collection. He'll get 25%, and the rest will go to a couple of 501c3 charities. It's not something we want to think about. To be honest, I don't know if I could part with my collection. I hope to downsize after I retire, which would mean selling a bunch. You are correct, you do need to cull your collection periodically Once I stop working for my son I will spend time downsizing and try to make a collection of only the albums that really make me excited Keep that collecting going, good for you

    Great Video Subject matter Steve, One important truth is our valued record collection is only worth what the market is willing to pay, & that is a small market. once we come to that reality the better. I know truth sucks! LOL! As for using your money from record sales on travel & Such, more power to you. However, after caring for my mother with dementia for 5 years, & she had no 'Long term care insurance' I have had to change my priorities after seeing the projected data for us baby boomers. All i Can tell you, is if & When I am reduced to sitting in a wheelchair drooling, I sure will have a bad ass music system to enjoy! Whether I know it or not is another issue LOL! OK, Sorry to bring the mood down, but we all need to prepare for the reality of our mortality & to keep things in perspective, cuz I am betting Heaven has a better audio rig than what man has ever invented! keep up the great work. & For the record, ( pun intended) My Mom Loved Neil Diamond. All of us are subject to "drop dead" at any age on any day. I am 64 and while my collection is only about a thousand albums I have no guilt at all leaving family members to deal with it after I am gone. They can keep what they want and disperse with the rest as they see fit. I have told them just that and they didn't seem to be disturbed. Its part of life and if the only mess we leave our families to clean up after we are gone is our record collections than we have done good.

    Professor, you're overworrying...Aiden is at the age right now where you can lead him to share your love of music. My mom instilled my love of music in me when I was about three. You can do this too, with Aiden and with the new granddaughter too. Educate them and make them want what you have. Parents permission first, of course. But if that doesn't work, then follow Mazzy and The Waxed into doing private auctions. You know it will be going to people who truly want it, and who will pay a fair amount. They will always do you right - you are among friends, and you know they'll have a good home. And in the long run, isn't that what you'd really like to see? Yeah.... have a good week, sir!

    Don’t worry about it. Enjoy it until you pass or until you’re sure the time is right. Your children can call a dealer, sell it, and enjoy the money. They might get low-balled, but then again, they might not. They can make the decision: an easy sale of the lot; or try to evaluate and sell each record for a decent price. It’s not your problem and they can decide for themselves how much time and work they want to put into it.
    My sisters and I cherry picked my parent’s library and book collection (maybe a thousand books) after they passed away about 15 years ago. I still have a several dozens of their books that are on subjects I’m interested in, and they are family keepsakes and memories. Then I sold the rest to a dealer/store for a few hundred dollars. I’m sure I got lowballed a little, but not totally ripped off. You can’t take it with you, and you can’t control the future after you have passed. Enjoy them and don’t worry about it.

    I recently watched a video by a record seller who discussed this topic, and he brought up some very real issues should someone decide to sell their records on their own - and that is the customer service part. To be efficient, you'd need to buy your own postage meter and scale so you don't have to go to the post office all the time just to get the postage and ship. And of course the cost of the packaging. And then you have to deal with the dissatisfied customer, because you're going to really need to know how to grade your records. A record show might be a lot easier, although you do have to lug the dang things around.
    I'm not sure I have anyone in my family that wants almost 2K records. Where are they going to put them? Do they even own a stereo? I suppose they could have mine. Would they be excited to get it but then later realize what a hassle it is and then want to dump it? I'm starting to think I'll probably just trot them down to a local record store and take what they offer just to be ride of them, knowing I'll never get anything close to what it cost me.
    But another option is to find a channel that is operated by a young person, someone you know enjoys music and collecting records. You can hear and see their passion while watching their videos. And then you just quietly bequest your collection to them. At least you know they'll get into the hands of someone who will appreciate it even if they end up selling a lot of them.

    I would do like Mark Wald did, he got a table at a record show and sold the albums for the prices he wanted to sell them for. Sounded like he did a major purge. If you don’t play an album that often or never, sell it! Or, I would keep collecting, enjoy the albums when you can, and make a list of prices and condition, then your kids can sell them on eBay. They can sell them on their own time, for the prices you wanted them sold for, and have a good flow of cash coming in. Each week, they can put 20-30 albums up for auction. The Frankenstein albums you have with original vinyl and new covers won’t sell for much. Part of the big draw is to have the whole package as it was sold 30-50 years before. Collectors look at the cover, inner sleeve, etc. Me, I would love to have the original vinyl to listen to, but I wouldn’t pay top price. I think Mr. Nobble records would love to get your whole African collection. He knows all the cats who collect that stuff. But as some comments say, when you’re dead, you won’t care. Right now, get a nice cold drink, put on your favorite album and turn it up! You’ll be happy, and that’s what it’s all about. Don’t worry too much, think of today! My dad wants me to have his vinyl collection and stereo equipment, but he said “Good Luck”, I hope you can get it. So I won’t be shocked if I can’t get it. I would love it, but it might not happen. Just the way it is….

    The last three years I’ve gotten rid of more records than I have bought. Mostly trading in records I don’t listen to any more. I have sold 10 or 12 records on discogs. I have recently hooked up with someone that wants Punk records. The past two months I’ve been selling valuable Punk albums that I love. I’m getting 60% and the record store owner is getting 40%. The good thing is no taxes and I don’t have the hassle of mailing out the records or paying discogs fees. So far my percentage has been almost $7,000.

Neither my partner nor my sons are remotely interested, so I just assume when I go someone will just advertise the records in a few shop windows or online or whatever, and off they'll go, either in dribs or drabs or all together. If they don't end up getting a decent price for them, too bad - none of them have ever set any store by them anyway and I doubt whether they'll care.

    My solution is to purge and upgrade. Slowly sell off records, reinvesting those funds into a single record that's better than the ones you just let go. This way, you end up with a carefully curated handful of awesome records that are easy to appraise and bring the fun of the hobby without overwhelming anyone. Plus, you can control the sale of valuable but more obscure titles, ensuring they end up with people who will appreciate them. It’s a way to show off your knowledge, experience the thrill of iconic finds, and leave something truly valuable-like an original Coltrane Blue Train or RL Zeppelin II. You get the idea!

    Selling records on Ebay or Discogs is hugely time intensive. You'd be spending a large part of your remaining years to make yourself miserable. We've spent a good deal of our lives making our children happy. Making our bosses happy. To me, now is the time (finally) to be selfish and do what makes us old geezers happy. If not now, then when? As long as buying records and listening to them makes me happy, then that's what I'm going to do - even if I'm 100. If that means my daughter has to back up a garbage truck, after I'm dead, to haul them away, then so be it. Hopefully, Dr. Darby will keep a few of them remind her of her crazy dad.

      lol, Dr Darby will have a heck of a task with your collection. I’m sure she looks at it and says “ some day this will be all mine!” How exciting. My youngest asked for my discogs log in so he can be prepared to sell them.

    I have the same problem, but more with books. The 12,000 or so CDs are neither here nor there.

      Ah books. I shed myself of so many books when I moved Dave. I still have a ton of books. My thought was I will read them again when I retire. I decided that I probably would not lol. I had the paperback books from my teen years still around I now have a more focused collection of books dealing with art, architecture, military history and the classics.

    My Jethro Tull will be first out of the door, my wife despises them, l sometimes play that flute sound under the bathroom door when she's showering to amuse myself. Tehe.
