I love that Sonic Youth album. That was the first one of theirs that I got. Oliver Nelson record looks great too - glad you're able to use your VMP credit. Cool VCLT from Isa. I'm planning to attend a Dean and Britta listening party via Bandcamp later today. Thanks for showing the records - hope you have a great week!
I got an email about that listening party Randy, wish I had done that. I love the music Dean and Brittany have been put out. I hope it was good. Oliver Nelson was a nice pick up, once in awhile VMP puts out some thing good, but not too often
Hi Steve - Evol by Sonic Youth was my favorite album of 1986. I remember seeing the video to Shadow Of A Doubt on MTV 📺 in the middle of the day & it was awesome to see Kim Gordon instead of the usual MTV generic stuff. Lions 🦁 looking great again today ! That Houston game seemed like a home game with all the Lions fans & they helped inspire the comeback.
Lions are playing amazing. Wish I could say that about my Huskers. We have been watching the Broncos also which have done well. Still, it is about the Lions David. Evol is great, I got that album for a reasonable price, that’s not going to happen now
Hi Steve! Thank you so much for giving my channel a shout out. You are all class and I feel most honoured! I will definitely be checking out Tess Parks, sounds wonderful. Again, cheers, much appreciated! Bryan 🙏
Bryan, I am a firm believer in supporting newer channels. People did that for me so now I’m in a position where it is important to also do that. You have a great channel Bryan, I’m glad to have found it
Hey Steve, loving the CO scenery on your video intros! I guess I’m crazy too as I picked up that Galaxy 500 Uncollected. Once I sent a request to 20|20|20 records for a repress of “On Fire” and got a nice message back from Naomi Yang. I’m glad they are keeping those first 3 records in print. Have a great week!
Russ, kind of amazing they keep Galaxie 500 in print. Try to get a Soundgarden album, most are out of print again. Very cool you got a note from Yang, that is amazing. I do see why you love spending your summer in CO.
I was just in Big Sky Montana and went to Yellowstone back in September. Love that part of the country. Being on the east coast, it always amazes me the scenery. Looking forward to hearing what a lawyer has to say about record collecting.
Kevin, Yellowstone is amazing. It has been a few years since I have been there. Colorado is pure beauty except for their record prices, the. The state becomes insane lol
Hey Steve. Great video. I love Tess Parks. And as a Boston boy I love Private Lightning and saw them 3 or 4 times. I think I mentioned that once before. Song Of The Kite! I just bought that Fleshtones album a few weeks ago! Cheers
Bobby, glad you found that Fleshtones, so much good music happened in the 80s. My friend Isa who is from Boston just sent me a list of all kinds of Boston bands and artists. Crazy how much music came from Boston
Hi Steve, always great nature video in the beginning. Galaxie 5 0 0. Fleshtones sound interesting. Hexbreaker! Cool garage rock resurgence in 80’s. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman
Steve, I think I should do a Colorado travel channel lol. Someone who just clicks on one of my videos problably wonder what is going on lol. Hex breaker! Pretty cool album title Zonkman. You and Mrs Zonkman enjoy your week
Hello Steve; Like the T- shirt. Tess Parks, dream like melodic pop. Sonic Youth, the ex girlfriend says it all. Oliver Nelson, uptempo lounge Jazz. Private Lightning, 80's pop. Galaxie 500, drone along pop. Fleshtones, B 52's influence. Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Tina and Pat your comment reminded me to get that Kim Gordon autobiography so once again you got me to spend money haha. I bought that and Sly Stones autobiography, that should be interesting
Rocky mountain national park is in my list to visit. Looks so wonderful. That's a sonic youth album I'm not too familiar with. Sounds good from the clip. Cool to see that galaxies 500 album even if it's not great. A piece of history for Luna fans.
Will, since I love Luna I did get the Galaxie album. I have all the other albums. This is a very good Sonic Youth album, they really were changing. Reissues are not to expensive , an OG, well that is a different story lol. Colorado is amazing, only an hour from the mountains if even that, surrounded by beauty
Evol was the first Sonic Youth album I bought, I agree, they began to lose the noisy aspects of their sound and explore MELODY with this one, Sister expanded on that concept, and it all culminated with Daydream Nation. Interesting batch Steve, the only one I recognized was Sonic Youth, but you may have opened my eyes to Tess Parks.
Spectacular scenery, Steve. Rocky Mountain high! $700 is disappointing, I guess, but better than nothing! Tess Parks on Fuzz Club! I'll have to check that out. Her name is really familiar, but I can't think of where. She's definitely got that shoegazey drawl vocal style. I liked the sample from Evol. More subtle than I associate Sonic Youth with. Nice jazz. Galaxie 500 didn't grab me. The Fleshtones, on the other hand, I thought sounded fab. Very old skool!
Andy, Fuzz Club keeps delivering. Tess Park and Anton Newcombe together was really good. Fleshtones are still fairly inexpensive when you find them. Just some fun Garage rock! The Rocky Mountains are amazing , it is fun sharing the scenery with all of you
$700, at least you got something I guess. The Blue Note sounds good, did n to know VMP had put that out. Damn those bass clarinets though lol. Have a good week Steve
Dirty was my first sonic youth album I’ve slowly worked my way through them all over the years & it’s still my favourite! The birthday party are my all time favourites of that no wave scene. Oh & Foetus although he’s always done his own thing
No wave scene is not an easy to,listen to I have listened to a few Foetus albums, they were a challenge. I recently found an OG of Dirty. Goo is my favorite followed by Dirty. I just bought Kim Gordon’s book, should be interesting
Mostly a bust for me this week, Professor, although Private Lightning sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Looking forward to this week's podcast. And you need to start giving your granddaughter equal time at the top of the show...she's gonna get jealous of Aiden if you dont...heh heh...have a great week, sir!
What, I can not believe you were no jumping up and down over no wave and shoegaze lol. Harder to get a picture of my granddaughter but working on it TC, I don’t want her to be bitter later in life haha. Private Lightning is something you might enjoy. Isa just sent me a huge list of Boston bands
Some good stuff Steve, was that Bear Lake in the intro? When I first moved to CO I went there in October and January, 3 months apart. October looked like your video, in January we could walk across the lake, surreal experience.
I believe that was Bear Lake Thijs. CO gives me a lot of great opening video! When I first moved to MN I went to a lake and saw all these people ice fishing, this was new to me. I had to walk across the lake, it seemed amazing.
Hey Steve. With that insurance settlement you’re well equipped to handle those record prices in the antique stores out there. Fantastic scenery by the way. Cheers.
Colorado, the state that actually does have everything....except an ocean. So close to being the perfect state. That's the one thing that Oregon has that Colorado doesn't, but I miss Colorado so much. Thanks for the Canadian plug on behalf of Canadian's everywhere. Love the dreamy and relaxing feel of the Tess Parks tracks. The noise-pop sound of Sonic Youth is what I love about them, it's the extremities that make them strangely appealing to me. Yep, I knew from your description that I would love The Hextones, and I am sold even after just the one sample you played. Another one to be on the lookout for! See, you can still have an awesome Sunday show even without the soft porn.....who needs it with such a great and entertaining ho8ee8e8e88e8e8eeeeeee8e8eee88888888888e8e8e8 Walk away from my computer and Norman takes over the comments section.
lol I’m glad Norman was paying attention also and commented ! Oregon coast I so incredibly beautiful but the water is waaaaaay toooooo cold. The Caribbean is my type of ocean water Mike. Go Canada, working on building up my Canadian collection. I have enjoyed everything that Tess Parks has put out. Nice thing about the Fleshtones, they have a lot of records that can be found for not a lot of money, keep your eye out there for them Mike
You have Bad Moon Rising after Confusion is Sex, and before Evol, their 4th proper album. Bad Moon Rising already has tons of "pop" songs, including my favorite one ever of theirs, Halloween, which is their own sort of Venus In Furs.
Stunty, welcome to my channel of boring music! Not sure how I missed Bad Moon Rising but it sounds worthy of having. I do pop onto your live stream but it’s hard for me to comment on your taste of music. Still it is educational and you have gotten me to try some new music. Hope your doing well Stunty
EVOL is amazing! the front cover is from a short film by Richard Kern. i believe it is Death Valley,69. the woman on the cover is Lydia lunch. don't let Aiden watch it just yet!! Tess sounds good. ill check her out further. cheers.
I did not know that was from a movie though I’m not surprised. I have heard of that movie but probably will never see it lol. Tess Parks is a good listen Ron, her stuff with Anton Newcombe is quite good
Great deal on the footage. You got $700, and the lawyers probably got $700,000! It's a shame, Steve. I've been on a bit of a Sonic Youth kick lately. Nice OG. I'm a big fan of Oliver Nelson's catalog. His solo releases on Impulse are great. I own that Fleshtones album. The organ sounds on that album are very B-52 influenced.
Mark, someone suggested Nelson’s album, The Skull Sessions. They say it’s like Bitches Brew. I only have one other album by him. I have so much Colorado footage, I should just become a travel channel Mark
Mike, happy Monday morning. Colour me surprise...shoegaze! I think Mike you're solely responsible for keeping the shoegaze flame alive & I've got many more modern shoegaze records than I ever thought I'd ever own thanks(?) to you. Oh looks like I'm getting Pomegranate too. Black vinyl...that's crazy! A new Australian channel that isn't exclusively Australian music!!! Mike Rankins still has the monopoly! SY Evol is brilliant imho. Confusion Is Sex is great early SY too. OG woah! I don't think they ever made a bad record. I think it's better to remain bitter & then bury it deep down in your gut. Apparently it's the best way to deal with it. I have Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch & I liked the sound of that Oliver Nelson he plays on too. What's the difference between Private Lightning & Public Lightning. Actually I'm not sure I want to know because I'm sure there's a double entendre in there that I'm not getting. I have that Galaxie 500 & their other 3 records. I agree that it's more for the collectors. Great band that led to our favourites Luna. The Fleshtones catalogue is so intimidating! I have Roman Gods & Up-Front. Great work Mike. Cheers...Mike PS I like Lemon Cake too.
Mike, I feel a video should always have some thing to say about food , yes Lemon Cake is pretty darn awesome. I have been kind of wondering what the hell am I doing buying all this shoegaze lol. When is enough enough? Maybe it’s time to get into Korean Pop? You are the King of Australian music, we all bow to you and your expertise. It is amazing how much Australian music you have. No idea how many r3cord you buy from other countries but you must have a separate house for your record collection. Sadly with SY I can’t find a OG cover for Evol. I have four complete OGs from them but need Evol. Frankenstein used Private Lightning. He was grabbing what he could for his own personal use. Most of us get struck by Public Lightning. It made for anyone of us to get struck by. A curse can crest your own personal Lightning also, just an fyi Mike.
Hello Steve, Sure is beautiful out there! Your insurance story sounds just like my insurance story after a hurricane. I'll be watching yours and Jim's podcast. Private Lightning made a bit of interest in upstate N.Y. (Syracuse) back in the day. Have a good week, thanks.
Ralph, it’s always interesting to hear who is familiar with these different bands like Private Lightning. When it comes to Hurricanes it seems like it is almost impossible to get insurance, very sad. Glad you’re watching our pod cast Ralph, thank you.
I watched a movie from 2000 called Groove. It is a VHS copy I got free. Mostly about drugs, relationships and opening an illegal dance club in a SF abandoned warehouse. But, the DJs and people's reactions to records was priceless. One girlfriend left the guys records on the front seat of the car and they warped in the sun. She said something like "I knew you should have bought CDs."
After all those years in MF-ing Midland, Michigan, I bet you're loving retirement in Colorado PLUS being close to your grandson. It is beautiful there. Oooh, I really like that last song by Tess Parks. I love Sonic Youth, I love the chaos and noise, but I also like when they flirt with mainstream melody. They were brilliant. Did you know that Thurston Moore is the same age as I? Almost to the day because I think he's a July baby as well. And Eric Dolphy is my favorite jazz artist. Oliver Nelson has done some very cool pieces that sound like 70s TV show soundtracks. You have that record, don't you? I'm too lazy to go pull it. But it might be another Nelson I'm thinking of. I love the bass clarinet! lol. It's got the same, or even more, funk as a baritone sax. The needle drop was sweet.
Richard, we did love Midland but now in less than an hour I’m in the mountains , pretty amazing. My wife is freaked out by the traffic though. Since I do like to start a video with something that I have done CO has overloaded my phone with video lol. The drivers suck out here I do not know the Nelson album that deals with soundtracks, it makes perfect sense that was a big part of his musical career. I just got in a Kim Gordon’s book, she was born in 53! Can you believe she is 71! How can that be? Stuff like that Richard really makes me feel old lol
Another great video, Steve! I had kinda thought that you might like the G500 better having listened to it over the weeks (you didn't much like it when you first got it either). Guess I am backasswards - I actually prefer this comp to most of the G500 LPs. Not that its better, but its rougher (like early Modern Lovers/VU demos) and much much less familiar (Galaxies' were pretty much my most played LPs in the late 80s) - I have all the comp stuff bar the 9 completely new songs, so I am really happy to see it. Also probably reflects the fact that I really loved the EPs both parts of the group put out immediately after the breakup (Pierre Etoile EP on Rough Trade, and Wareham's Anesthesia EP on ), which were essentially demos, and the first Luna LP, but have had a harder time following Luna and Dean's solo/britta stuff (unless its riffing on VU...). Shrug. suum cuique! Looking forward to the Two Guys video....covers a topic I worry about! cheers
Wow, not many people say Galaxie 500 was a favorite band, that is great. I got into them through my love of Luna. I did become hooked on 500 then. I think this is an album that just needs more time. I listen to most albums 3 to 6 times before I show them. I hate to just put up an album and say I bought this and move on. That is a personal thing but I like to know about the music. Based on your comments I’m going to play that a few more times, thank you for that
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I wonder if people are less thrilled with Galaxie 500 because Dean's vocals are, admittedly, pretty thin/whiny - at least relative to Luna. I just really dig the three piece sounds - Damon is a brilliant drummer (lots of swing for a rock drummer), and I think Naomi's bass is perfect - like a lead instrument, sort of a cross between Peter Hook (high notes, less is more) and McCartney (counter-melodic runs). Dean's guitar really fits and gives them the whole VU/Modern Lovers vibe. errr, or perhaps I just get carried away....
For anyone interested in the lineage of ‘No wave’ music/ bands- check out the doc “Kill your Idols” (2004) It’s excellent. There’s also a really good documentary on the Birthday Party “Mutiny in Heaven” playing on Tubi right now.
Hmm I went back and forth on getting that Galaxie 500 but I think I'm good with just the albums. EVOL is an all-time favorite, and still not even my favorite by SY. Hope you are well Steve
I think I need to spend more time with Galaxie 500 album but generally I’m not a huge of demos. When it comes to SY I really like them up through Dirty. After that I kind of lost track of their music. I bought the CDs but did not spend time with them Dom.
That title of the Tess Parks album is part of a saying that goes “ and those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music” Friedrich Nietzsche. Anything else you need to know, just ask. Hahahahaha
No kidding Jonathan, lol. That is great. You are a wise person. Obviously I never read Nietzche. That full quote is fantastic. I still have to see your list of 25 bands
I was surprised to learn Oliver Nelson was from my area not too long ago. "Skull Session" is an album that is unlike much of his earlier stuff; think of a better "Bitches Brew", IMO. 🙂
Chance, I have never heard of Skull Session which sounds more like a heavy metal album but if it is similar to Bitches Brew then I need to check it out
Yeah, that was my thought Brian, that $700 was for records. Didn’t quite cover my loss lol. I have what I really need from SY on vinyl now. I use to have everything on CD also
Tess Parks sounds great. Blue Note is a good label but after a while it all begins to merge together. Blue Note have done a great job of marketing and cashing in. Old white dudes are eating this sh!t up. I love the bass clarinet. At least when Bennie Maupin plays it with Herbie Hancock. That Eric Dolphy needle drop cemented it for me. I’m done with Jazz. Galaxie500 are cool. Cooler than Jazz. Fleshtones are such a fun Garage band. Funner than Jazz I’m beginning to see a pattern.
Richie, I now only dabble in jazz, it has to be on a great sale for me to pick it up unless it’s Miles Davis. Tess Parks has a very cool sound , I have liked everything I have bought from her but her albums with Anton from BJTM are really good. I think I also spotted a pattern in your comment Richie, jazz just ain’t much fun lol
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Check Parannoul's "After The Magic" pressed by Topshelf Records. I think they are my favorite non-english speaking shoegaze band 😺 Also their previous record "To See The Next Part Of The Dream" is considered by many to be a modern shoegaze classic and badly needs a repress 😻
Hey Steve, Insurance Litigation is an area I specialise in, although I will stress that is motor, But I also deal with quantum for special damages, Ie I smashed my Rolex, phone, golf clubs in the motor incident. The fact you were offered $700.00 would suggest they accept their was an indemnity on the policy & a display of negligence . We would be able to use your videos as evidence in respect of the quantum aspect . I may have anticipated maybye a 20k offer just to try & get rid of you, in the hope you were just too bored/tired to fight any increase. I assume class action works very differently? TBF if I had advised you, you probbaly would have ended up owing the other side $700.00...so every cloud. Sorry you've had an awful experience with that. I'll watch your follow up podcast with interest...
Harris, I was trying to find your email, address. I wanted to tell you I got that first Shelby Lynn album. Thanks for letting me know. The company that owned both dams claimed bankruptcy and then I guess formed a new company. It took almost 4 years. I really expected nothing from this, too many companies including our future president declare bankruptcy to get out of paying Sad but it’s how it works. Hope your doing well my friend
Yeah, the slurping gets loud, amazing how that sound it picked up but at 4 AM I need coffee I actually film it that early. I always start with scenery, no doubt I love people with that but the people who have been watching me for years have come to really enjoy that part. Thank you for watching and sharing some good thoughts
The only people in England who buy jazz are those with their heads up their behinds. Pompous jackasses. It hit its peek during prohibition and should have died with it. The insurance company would have paid more but you collected Bluenote and saved Bill Cosby so you get no sympathy. I am playing a cd I found at the back of the fridge freezer, A tribute to R E M I thought it would be rubbish but I have already played it 5 times on the trot. I have stuff by galaxy 500 and Fleshtones
I am trying to still get the complete collection of Bill Cosby albums. I knew you would appreciate me featuring some jazz. I think late at night you secretly play it when no one is around. Interesting place to find a CD Peter. I use to have a tribute CD of REM also, I wonder if it’s the same one

@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 If anyone was going to know about the different types of lightning I knew it would be Mike 👍
She said something like "I knew you should have bought CDs."
lol, what a movie Henry, the stuff you find cracks me up.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 The shopping cart of free stuff never disappoints.
Tees Parks with major The Verve vibes.
She just has a sexy smoky voice Dave, her with Anton Newcombe was great
Hi Steve yes that Oliver Nelson lp is a good one love Eric dolphy his other great lp is the blues and the abstract.
George, do you have the Nelson album Skull Sessions. Someone says that is excellent, kind of like Bitches Brew.
@ don’t have that one’d Steve. Will look out for it.
For anyone interested in the lineage of ‘No wave’ music/ bands- check out the doc “Kill your Idols” (2004)
It’s excellent.
There’s also a really good documentary on the Birthday Party “Mutiny in Heaven” playing on Tubi right now.
Tess Parks sounds familiar, I prefer the girl’s vocals from Slowdive. Nice that you got the cover for the Sonic Youth. A great band. Go Lions!
Jeff, Evolmis a great SY album, I forgot how good that was Tess Parks has a sexy smoky voice, I do like these dream pop vocals
@ - Someone pointed out that I had left off The Allman Brothers. A huge oversight on my part. So just add them in as you’re watching.
I was surprised to learn Oliver Nelson was from my area not too long ago. "Skull Session" is an album that is unlike much of his earlier stuff; think of a better "Bitches Brew", IMO. 🙂
Chance, I have never heard of Skull Session which sounds more like a heavy metal album but if it is similar to Bitches Brew then I need to check it out
$700! Spend it on records 😂 I have lots of Sonic youth on CD, but one on vinyl. That's a crime. I do like Galaxie 500!
Hello Steve, Tess Parks is not far from the Korean artist called Parannoul. If you don’t know… Take care. Bruno
Bruno, you changed your channel name again! I have n3ver heard of Parannoul , I need to check them out.
If you want to grow your channel, maybe talk about the promised content within the first 3 1/2 minutes?
Also the slurping is really awful.
