Should You TRIM Your Kite Before Launching ?
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Місяць тому
Not many people recommend always trimming the kite before launching, and neither did I. However, I’ve recently realized that it’s much safer to completely trim your kite rather than leaving it fully powered, regardless of whether the wind is strong or light. I’ve seen many accidents during kite launches, both in person and in videos, and most of them involved kites that were fully powered. INST...

You don’t need to know how to self-launch a kite to be an independent kitesurfer. It’s not an essential skill because, without the kite in the air, you’re not in any immediate danger. However, if it’s windy and there’s no one around to help, knowing how to safely self-launch can be very helpful. Let’s learn how to do it safely! Only spot that works well is mylos beach but very busy and choppy in summer with onshore wind. The Church/wood bridge spot is no wind at all...tried it many times during wind season, no wind everytime. The thermal does not work here. please take in mind when going there. Mylos beach on the other hand sure ok early just when wind starts and be there before the crowds! Even when forecast is showing 15 knots it can be 20 -25 due to thermall. During 3 weeks , every day wind at mylos.

      @ I’ve never visited Sri Lanka, but I’m pretty sure Las Terrenas is much more beautiful 🤗 No one ever complains, even when there’s no wind at all 🙏🏻 The water is usually crystal flat, with winds blowing between 13-17 knots. It’s perfect for teaching, learning new basic moves, relaxing, and enjoying the place when there’s no wind. But honestly, I’m feeling a bit depressed after going so long without kiting in strong wind conditions :( Hopefully I will be able to visit soon Buen Hombre, that is based north of DR and there the wind should be much stronger 🙌🏼

    • @IJzzo
      @IJzzo Місяць тому

      @@kitesurfexperiencebypetar Sure for teaching the first basics of kiteboarding, that are perfect wind conditions. I can imagine you getting depressed from the continuous low wind, but I guess it is almost always windy there at least. Denmark here had in summer a few 9 bft average wind days. 😃 A bit too much for me to have still really fun - it is more playing a survival game on a kite. But now it’s freaking cold unfortunately.

    • @kitesurfexperiencebypetar
      @kitesurfexperiencebypetar Місяць тому

      I believe most instructors don’t teach this, just like I didn’t until about a year ago. In the past, kites made before 2010 would easily front stall when fully trimmed. This created a risk-once the kite reached the zenith, it could front stall quickly. However, with newer generations of kites, front stalls are much less common. I’ve realized it’s now highly recommended to always trim the kite before launching. Even when fully trimmed, it’s no longer an issue, regardless of whether the wind is strong or light. Thank you for your support 🙏🏻🙌🏼

      Thanks for reply. I wondered if you good guys change boards as much as kites. Never hear much about board changes as much as kites. I would assume because boards are harder to travel with than kites. I use a big board ( litewave 155 ) that I love but it’s huge. I probably use too much and should not use when wind is adequate. Hides a lot of my bad technique

    i dont think it matters too much. If the kite is trimmed and you death loop on launch the death loop will yank you much harder and loft you higher than if you aren't trimmed, because a wider megaloop has more power than a tight megaloop. In the end it's not a big difference trim or not trimmed. The only thing that matters is what you said in the video: If the kite feels strange use the QR immediately. That's all that matters.

    • @kitesurfexperiencebypetar
      @kitesurfexperiencebypetar Місяць тому

      Hello, thank you for your comment. Could you please share a reason why the kite might go into a death loop during launch

    • @bonerici
      @bonerici Місяць тому

      @@kitesurfexperiencebypetar plenty of reasons. Sometimes you never figure out why. Other times, the bridle can wrap around the wingtip. Another reason is a twig gets into the bridle and when the kite tensions it creates a knot that makes a loop. Another reason is a rigging error where the line somehow makes it's way inside the bridle and it makes a knot on launch. Another reason is that a line gets caught into the depower cleat. Sometimes you never figure it out. I remember one pretty bad injury I saw where I noticed immediately that the kite was acting weird, but the guy didn't immediately use his QR and it lofted and looped him about 50 meters downwind and 10 meters into the air. I believe he was fully depowered at the time, so it really yanked him.

    • @kitesurfexperiencebypetar
      @kitesurfexperiencebypetar Місяць тому

      Exactly, you’re right. The bridle line can wrap around the wingtip, putting you in danger if the safest steps for launching the kite are not followed. I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you mean by ‘twig in the bridle.’ Could you clarify? The point about rigging errors is interesting. I’ve never seen anyone make the mistake of sliding the back line of the kite through the bridle line. This should be very noticeable once the kite is in the launching position. Again, you’re absolutely right-if not following the safest launching steps can lead to dangerous situations. Also, I’m not sure what a ‘depower cleat’ is-could you explain? Do you remember if the person was following the safest steps for launching the kite? And do you recall what caused the kite to react weirdly

    • @bonerici
      @bonerici Місяць тому

      @@kitesurfexperiencebypetar it was incredibly violent and at the end all was left was a hospital visit a bunch of spaghetti and a mystery. I could tell the kite was acting wonky but he couldn't tell because he wasn't experienced enough. I was watching this all from behind him, and I could see the kite slowly rising up without him giving it input then it megalooped. By the time I yelled at him "use the qr" he was already 10 meters in the air. He bounced a few times, unconscious, and we ran to him and were able to use the QR then before the kite relaunched. So in this case we never figured out the reason. I saw another friend of mine have the exact same thing happen, he saw the kite was acting weird, immediately hit the QR. We looked at everything, found a twig or piece of wood, or straw something had wrapped around one of the lines causing a knot. Got the knot out and relaunched. You've never had a twig or piece of wood cause a knot? It's not that rare. To me, the only important thing is "Use the QR" if it feels off, don't try to launch anyway.

    • @kitesurfexperiencebypetar
      @kitesurfexperiencebypetar Місяць тому

      Wow, that’s quite a scary story about the guy flying 10m high! I’d be really interested to know the exact cause so we can identify a clear solution and prevent something like that from happening again. Ah, now I understand what a twig is! Yes, it’s quite common for a twig or a piece of wood to get stuck in the lines. This is another reason why it’s so important to always follow the safest steps when launching a kite. Doing so ensures we minimize any risks, even if something like a twig is in the lines. By the way, are you familiar with the safest steps for launching a kite?

    Living in a gusty area, I always trim the kite so the “sweet spot” is with my arms a bit closer than riding position. Gives much more wiggle room if something goes wrong. Then once on the water, I’ll reduce the trim and take on more power since it’s easier and safer to control once out there. Land is the most dangerous spot overall, so I’d rather the kite be less reactive as you said.

  • @DenisShakhovsky
    @DenisShakhovsky Місяць тому

    It also flies better when depowered during the launch or body drag in light, unstable wind. A fully powered kite tends to stall in tricky conditions, which can lead to unwanted situations.
