I’d like to add one, being able to body drag upwind, not just ride.
Once you loose the board you’re riding skills don’t matter until you get the board back.
You can even bodydrag back to the shore if needed.
For the rest, super list, unfortunately the focus is mostly on learning to ride in most schools, you’re often not even allowed to land or launch the kite.
Thanks for the video Petar ❤

Hey Warner, yes body dragging up wind will definitely help to easier and quicker reach your board, I was thinking a lot if this is essential to be independent and of course it is on certain kite spots, like: Side on-shore wind but with a small beach, or off shore wind... And in some situations it's not mandatory to know how to perfectly body drag upwind, like: side on shore wind with a long sandy beach, or knee deep lagoon where you might easily use body drag down wind to reach the shore, walk up wind and BD down wind again to reach your board, or in the shallow lagoon just walking up to your board.
But definitely every single kitesurfer should master a body drag upwind to avoid spending time and energy recovering the board in what ever conditions :))
Thank you so much for your support.

@@kitesurfexperiencebypetar You're right, it's not mandatory at each spot, the walking spots are te best for practicing.

I'd agree with this broadly. Some spots you can get away with not knowing how, but I think it's an essential skill some folks take too long to learn.
Don't get me wrong, I love helping someone out by grabbing their board, but not being able to quickly get back to a board is an overlooked hazard in my opinion. Especially if you're dealing with deep water or spots where you don't have much if any safe downwind bailout options.

Exactly, very important to know Body Drag up wind to be able to quickly recover the board, easily enjoy the session and to easier come back to the beach. Definitely a must for off shore wind conditions.

    Hi Petar,
thank you for your crystal clear statement. I admit that the most kiters have to improve their attitude to become indipentent Kitesurfers.
One point I would like to add.
Be respectful to yourself and tolerate all kiters on your current spot, especially more unexperienced kiters. Sometinems this seems to me the most difficult challenge.
Thank you again for all information your videos, excellently prepared and presented, highly appreciated great work and always a pleasure 😄

Since my home spot is on a lake in Switzerland with gusty and unsteady winds, I am sometimes even an independent swimmer (with an air mattress and a standup paddle that is way too small)! 🤣
But all joking aside ... I really like your self rescue videos... I think it's super important to know how to self rescue and we should talk about it more often.... I learned self rescue the hard way back in 2018 and lost a board because I was stressed and unprepared.

The advantage of the swiss lakes is that there is on-shore and off-shore wind according to the angle of view. You always end up on land and can then take the commuter train to the starting point. 😃

@@kitesurfexperiencebypetar The serious part of being a very good swimmer is being able to assess the conditions on the spot and act accordingly. If you are in the middle of the lake with a thermal system and the wind is dropping, clouds are gathering towards the sun, it is time to gain ground towards the shore. Because there are no bookable rescue services, only 112/ emergency call... 🤦‍♀

That's actually a good add on to the list, in deeper water you need to be an independent/good swimmer and be quite fit.

In your opinion what defines an independent kitesurfer ?

  • @MarkoPareigis

I think you covered pretty much everything. I personally add self-landing/-launching to this. Kitesurfing shouldn't be a team sport afterall 🤣
Seriously, if you get in trouble just because "everyone has already left the beach" you're not an independant kitesurfer imho, so self-landing is an essential skill. Self launch as well but to a much lesser extent...

    • @kitesurfexperiencebypetar
      @kitesurfexperiencebypetar  Рік тому +1

Exactly the Basic Self Landing it's a must to know, for Self Launching is not mandatory to know as it's not recommended to go Kitesurfing alone.
