Can the Ogre run a larger cassette like a 10-52....need low gear inches for climbing hills. Current ogre drive train only has 19 gear inches whereas the BC has 16.
The Microshift Advent X rear derailleur has a maximum of 48 teeth. You would need to swap out the derailleur and shifters to get a wider range.
@ottawabikeandtrail thanks...I wish surly hadn't changed the fork on the ogre...I really wanted those extra mounts on the fork blades so I could mount a bottle cage and a salsa anything cages on each fork blade.
Difference between Preamble and straggler frame? I know the fork is different :)
how rigid are they?
I’d like to see you do this same Grappler comparison with the Bridge Club and Ogre.
Great idea. I’ll try to do that.
Would 36/22 work with the top pull Deore derailleur? What would the gear range, high/low ratios be? Size XL bridge club. Really want top pull 2x with more high end than 1x and want good climbing too.
Won't do everything and might do 1 or 2, BUT understand these are ideas/possibilities. I like some and will probably do; i.e. saddle, hub and front rack. Thank you for the entertainment! Additionally, I like seeing products I've never heard of (i.e. Soma Dream Bars, PNW Pedals, and New Albion XDT Crankset). It's hard to know everything. And things I haven't thought about for years (i.e. Brooks B17 Saddle). Again thank you for the infotainment. Cheers
It looks like stickers are under a clear coat! Also an improvement.
As a Ghost Grappler owner thinking of getting a Krampus (and building it up myself as well) I would love to have some feedback about the difference in riding/sitting position between both. Especially if you would put the same wheels on both. Seems like the frame geometry is very similar. Quite long toptube and outstretched position...
GREAT video. Will a 29x3 tire fit on the Krampus with suspension fork?
One thing I would mention is that the rear dropouts are 12mm thru axle. So you actually get a slotted dropout with a thru axle, which is how my Lowside is also. It's pretty slick how it's set up. And yes, I did notice the Swampmaster in the background ...🙂
i don't care what anyone says. Surly makes some cool bikes. My first Surly will definitely be a new Moonlander. I'd also like a Krampus in the quiver. Thanks for the video!
I agree. Love to get my hands on a Moonlander. But, theres not much fat tire riding in our area.
Love mine with flat bars!
Best way to figure out what bike to get is to ride. Figure out the kind of places you like to ride around ,what kind of surfaces you like and don’t like, the speed that you like to ride, and how much time you like to ride. That’s what helped me sort out my two favorite bikes.
What is the max chainring size 1x for this bike
They might make dish chain rings like Sram, they have flat, three and seven degrees. But figuring out the chain line is a key
Good question. Non-boost rear hub is 36 tooth. Boost rear hub would be 38 tooth. The bike comes stock with a boost rear hub.
@@ottawabikeandtrail what about 2 x configuration.? 38 tooth paired with a 11 x36 cassette would be a good combo I think 🤔.
@@sadiejones7991 what do you mean dish chain rings
@tmayberry7559 dang man I didn't check my notifications, I sorry, I put a spacer on my Sram so a 34 tooth ring would fit on a bike that came with a 32. The 34 was to close to my chain stay. I had to use lock tight to set the bolt in place instead of torqueing down like I needed to and after all that a man told me they sell dish degrees chain rings. Picture your flat ring shaped like a dinner plate with the edge lipped up three degrees or a dinner plate on the table with the edge curved up seven degrees. The ring on the bike would flare out three degrees so it would miss the chain stay.
i have krampus 2022 and the bolts on the fork are arranged differently..just one on the side, three in the inner part toward the frame..in this case when you mount a drybag and turn ,the bag touch the frame , no confy steering... the forks i saw in this video shows different bolt arrangement
Yes, they changed the fork design in the newer models.
“Intergalactic” He says! 🙏🏻
Is there a belt driven with pinion gearbox surly? ❤
Not that I am aware of.
That stem is crazy high
To ride in the drops
He explained the reasoning. Did you even watch the video, or just have to throw out a critical comment?
@@johndunbar2393 I did hear his comment, yes, but with a bike like that and the flared bars, ideally you'd want your hands to be comfortable riding in the drops, especially in bumpy, technical terrain with a bit of a more upright riding style. So really very little steerer tube cutting seems necessary for the store owner who I know fits well on size Medium Surly bikes. Merry Christmas to you.
@@MMcG25 I was asking the OP, my friend, not you. Sorry for the confusion! I just now realized it didn't put the OP's username before my reply. Your explanation makes perfect sense, and I do see a lot of folks run taller steer tubes. I'm in western Kansas and predominantly ride gravel roads, and I'm always realizing how much of an anomaly my riding style is, because I'm only in the drops, to get aero, going into headwinds. But, the vast majority of folks I see, or talk to, say they're in their drops in the situations like you mentioned. I'm not comfortable in the drops, honestly. Merry Christmas to you too, my friend!
@@johndunbar2393 No worries. I'm dying to try one of these with a short stem and wide dirt drop bars. I used to have a Singular Gryphon (similar idea) and it rode so nicely (but that could have been in part due to the tubing choices Sam Alison made for the frame and fork on that bike).
That looks stunning!
I'd like to try a Grappler or Krampus with 2x drive...mountain bikes are brutally slow for me otherwise...
The Grinch that stole the Grappler! A new classic. Thanks for the clear breakdown of differences between the 3 Surly bikes, I found it very helpful. Thanks!
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
I’m a MicroSHIFT fan. Their stuff works well and is easy to set up - a big plus for those like me who are not especially mechanically inclined. But the Sword shifters are so much nicer than the Advent shifters. They feel better in the hand and routing the shifter cable under the tape looks so much nicer. They are, of course, cross-compatible. Yeah. I’m picky. But…
Agree 100 percent! I’d like to see redesigned Advent shifters.
I do like that Ghost Grappler... I've been wondering if a Surly is in my future.. Thanks for making it a bit more difficult to decide. I like the Big Dummy... That Grappler looks indestructible.
It is indestructible. Big Dummy is also cool.
@@ottawabikeandtrail My next ride is gonna be a cargo bike. I can definitely see myself on the electric Big Dummy... Have you done a video on that? Thanks.
Adore that new color but I really don't understand the choice to go with Advent X in the drops. Especially for a touring-style bike where many folks will want to have a large bag between the hoods.
I'll add that I went with microSHIFT Sword components for my dropbar Salsa Fargo and it's lovely. This is not a critique of microSHIFT in general, just the Advent X drop shifters for this use case.
Ottawa KANSAS...Not Canada. Got you. I know I made that mistake awhile back. great video, great bikes. Love my Surly.
Bridge club, small frame, build it myself !!, By spring Hopefully!! P.S. own a Crosscheck , small ! , a E C R 29" Small , A straggler frame (TOO SMALL) XS, Will , sell in spring ! Looking forward to building the Bridge Club bike With most of those parts, and the 27.5 wheel set I have on hand !! I spend most of my time, riding bike paths to dirt roads , In the middle of nowhere !! I am a 50,s kid!! My sisters are still waiting for me to grow out of the bicycle phase !!! They jump on my bikes in a heartbeat though to go riding with me.
You lost me with that 1x B.S. Less flexibility, wider ratios, fewer choices and less bike, and all for more money. Great if your are selling them, not so great if you are buying. I've had numerous 3x and one 2x adult quality bikes over the past 40 years and never had any significant issues with those drivetrains. Never gonna buy a 1x. How long before manufacturers switch back to making front derailleurs, and tout it as all new tech?
Unless something has changed, mechanical Apex will not work with an Eagle derailleur.
Russ, Thanks for watching! I haven't tried it myself, but got the information from Jamis. Also, found a link to a SRAM support article on the topic. Let me know if you have found otherwise. support.sram.com/hc/en-us/articles/16378128396059-Are-12-speed-Apex-mechanical-shift-levers-compatible-with-Eagle-mechanical-rear-derailleurs#
@ Ah. Forgot about Apex 12spd since I don’t bother with anything above 11spd :) Pre 12 there is no mixing and matching. 12spd they played catch up with Ratio Tech after they proved there’s a market.
Blimey, I'm in love!
That is one ugly bike
Cool bike! 😊👍
What size frame is it?
Keep the Surly bikes. They are underrated. 🙂☕☕
Omg I love the midnight special! I get stuck looking at this frame.. I own a straggler so I don’t need one”yet”
I’m going to run a triple front and it was tough finding the right front derailleur. A couple hours of searching I found a NOS XTR that would work.
at that price they need carbon wheels. $2500 for a steel framed bike without carbon wheels is overpriced I'm my opinion. Seriously you can build a nice Al framed gravel bike, lighter, with much better spec for much less. Its would have wireless electronic shifting and be much much lighter.
is the rear hub 130mm or 135mm spacing?
Great Vid!
I like Surly's approach to bike releases. When you're dealing with a technology that's as mature as steel bicycles, there's really no need to bring out something new every year. They know their customers aren't suckers who want the latest thing all the time, instead get what they need and keep it for as long as it satisfiest their use case. Other companies could really learn something from this, it say something about how confident Surly is that their bikes are about as good as they can get for the intended use.
It may be just the lighting, or a trick of the camera... but the color looks slightly different on the APEX than on the GRX. Is it like that in person?
I love the matching OR layer you wore for this video ;) Also, I am not sure what the difference is but Jamis does refer to the carbon fork as V2 on the new renegade
Greetings from Ottawa Canada. This bike frame shares a lot of similarities to my Kuwahara Mesa from around 87-88. U brake, same rack mounting bosses, cable routing and identical rear dropout. I’m thinking likely made in the same Taiwanese factory.
Tire clearance?
I would love this Root Beer as frame/fork only. I have much different opinions/likes on the setup.
How much does it weigh?
Sweet looking bike, but wish you had gone into a bit more detail on some common questions. How wide of tire will the bike take? Yes, lots of mountain points, but can I don’t send mount points for front or rear racks? We can look up geo and think about how the bike might handle, but curious if you think this is best suited for all road or chunkier gravel or bikepacking? Thanks - love the clean welds and color!
Jeff, nice bike, by a solid brand that often flies under the radar. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
12 speed 1x Shimano supports microspline 12 speed mtb 10-51 teeth cassetes. The change probably has more to do with the ubiquity of SRAM AXS Apex as an OEM groupset at this price point. Either way, Shimano or SRAM, this frame is probably the best in terms of standards (T47 bb, Reynolds tubing, tapered headtube, nice color, good welds, attractive dropouts). I like it.
Nice frame which id happily buy separately. Dislike SRAM stuff in general. Also prefer 2x or even 3x.... dont mind the extra weight ( your buying a steel bike ) and i like the closer gear ratios and the lower gears available
If I do build one it’ll be a 2x.
I prefer the simplicity and chain retention of a 1x system.
Nice to see it as a frame-set too. Good one for a winter build series similar to what you you did with the Bridge Club but from frame-set up!
