As a 70's kid, I was a one bike man; woods paths, gravel, road, jumps, wheelies. As a 60 year old, I'm still a one bike man and, the Surly Bridge Club is the cat's meow, it's cracker jack. I feel like a kid when I'm on it with a hooligan grin at the corner of my mouth. It's the bee's knees.

I bought a holdover black Bridge Club with the Deore drive train. I’m loving the bike and its versatility, but I changed the 30 tooth front chain ring and installed a 34 tooth. I still have plenty of low gearing for hills, but gained 10 gear inches on the high end. I also installed the 8 pack front rack. Great rack, and like everything Surly makes, it’s built like a tank. I also have a Long Haul Trucker that’s about 10 years old. Both bikes are extremely versatile, and between the 2, I have most riding situations covered.

I got a second hand Surly Ogre last week! I hadn’t had a bike more than 10years. I cycled perth to Sydney in Aus without any knowledge About 5000 with Ogre absolutely amazing bike. It didn’t make big problem some times small issues but that one was from my ignorance of bike haha btw I’m cycling from Cape to Cairo with same bike this time i got more issues than before because of dirt roads and gravel roads but still my bike’s been amazing! I am truly happy i got this one from second hand market! I recommend ogre!

I live in Montana and I have the 2023 ogre after switching from my Kona Sutra that had slippage problems with the dropper post in the frame. I change the seat and change the bars to the salsa factory band deluxe and gloss black, some Ergon grips and 2.25 maxis Race Rekon. next step will be an improvement with the mechanical brakes and that will do it. I intend on riding this on the last great ride in whitefish Montana for 91 miles this summer.

I live in the Netherlands Europe and own a Surly ecr which look the same as the Ogre here except it has a dark brown color.
Build with a Shimano SLX 30 gear drivetrain and Topeak rear rack and right up touring position, the 3 inch Knards are doing well in dry sand conditions.
Not at all at the moment here btw, many places in nature are flooded now. 😂
Surly is a seldom appearance where I live, although people here do a lot of mtb riding.
I specifically like the classic looks and the versatility of the bikes.
I love to tinker with my bikes.
So, I hope that they stick with what they do.

MTB routes are in many cases blocked by water in lower terrain.
I bought mine in Eindhoven nearby but this shop is closed (personal reasons I think) a few years back.
There's an online shop called 'Just Pedal Bikeshop' that I know of.
They offer frames, parts and so on.
It seems that there is not a lot around, only some shops who know and like Surly, however the parts are there anyway. 😀
I love unusual bikes like this ecr I own.

I had ride both of it. It's all about where is your planning ride in it. If you'll ride it most of the time in forest which have mostly wild roads, bridge club can be better option. If your paths are less wild compare to fully jungle; like %75 dirt road and %25 wild forest then Ogre can be better. The bikes have very close riding genre so other options can be more important then these slight differences. Like if you have favorite personal tyre size or wanna gear-hub or not. My path was more wild but i selected the Ogre because there is an Rohloff option

I bought an Ogre frame set in 2022 and built it up custom. It is an incredibly versatile bike that can be built up so many ways. One thing I would say is that you do need a little more knowledge of bikes to get good results out of the rear end because of the sliding dropout. So while the sliding dropouts give you a huge amount of drivetrain options they do complicate things just a little bit. Totally worth it for me though, this bike is an absolute tank and so fun to ride, pure fun, loads up great for touring or makes a fun rigid MTB. It really does everything and it's always a blast to ride.

Would love to get an ogre but when I was ready to buy one the LBS didn't have one my size back in 2023...so I got a BC and love the bike...but I'm seriously thinking of getting your conversion kit to go to 2x drivetrain so I can get more gear range for touring. But one thing I'd like all bike companies who make bikes would be to have an option to get the rear triangle split so you could install a gates carbon belt drive to work with an IGH on rear wheel.

If you are set on a Rohloff Hub I would go with an Ogre. You can make a BC work, but it will be difficult. Since you are building a wheel I would consider getting the wheels built as 27.5 rather than 29 if you need a smaller bike. This will make the bike easier to handle and better for a smaller ride. Obviously I don’t know your size, but if the small Ogre is close the smaller wheels might give you the right fit.
