    I own a Surly Ogre. Absolutely love it! Commuting, bike packing, pulling a trailer, it does it all without any issues. Keep in mind, I am a 300# rider as well. Durable, versatile....you can't go wrong with the Ogre.

    I bought a holdover black Bridge Club with the Deore drive train. I’m loving the bike and its versatility, but I changed the 30 tooth front chain ring and installed a 34 tooth. I still have plenty of low gearing for hills, but gained 10 gear inches on the high end. I also installed the 8 pack front rack. Great rack, and like everything Surly makes, it’s built like a tank. I also have a Long Haul Trucker that’s about 10 years old. Both bikes are extremely versatile, and between the 2, I have most riding situations covered.

    I live in Montana and I have the 2023 ogre after switching from my Kona Sutra that had slippage problems with the dropper post in the frame. I change the seat and change the bars to the salsa factory band deluxe and gloss black, some Ergon grips and 2.25 maxis Race Rekon. next step will be an improvement with the mechanical brakes and that will do it. I live in the Netherlands Europe and own a Surly ecr which look the same as the Ogre here except it has a dark brown color.
    Build with a Shimano SLX 30 gear drivetrain and Topeak rear rack and right up touring position, the 3 inch Knards are doing well in dry sand conditions.
    Not at all at the moment here btw, many places in nature are flooded now. 😂
    Surly is a seldom appearance where I live, although people here do a lot of mtb riding.
    I specifically like the classic looks and the versatility of the bikes.

    I bought an Ogre frame set in 2022 and built it up custom. It is an incredibly versatile bike that can be built up so many ways. One thing I would say is that you do need a little more knowledge of bikes to get good results out of the rear end because of the sliding dropout. So while the sliding dropouts give you a huge amount of drivetrain options they do complicate things just a little bit. Totally worth it for me though, this bike is an absolute tank and so fun to ride, pure fun, loads up great for touring or makes a fun rigid MTB. It really does everything and it's always a blast to ride.

  • @kylegray9531
    @kylegray9531 2 місяці тому

    I live in Alaska and had a 2013 ogre for many years. I traded it for an ECR that I really didn’t care for actually. I sold ECR and put the money towards a custom bridge club with SRAM eagle gx drive and e13 9-50 in the back and 38 up front with sun ringle carbon wheels and the molokos. I much prefer this to ogre. I have the surly ET in 27.5x2.5 and find it to be the true jack of all trades (master of none) bike. The ogre feels bomb proof, which is awesome, but the BC is far more playful (in my experience) and over all much more fun to ride. I live in Fairbanks and throw some 27.5x2.8 studded cake eaters for winter and it does really well, except for in deep snow. But usually it doesn’t snow a ton here; just super duper cold

    I had ride both of it. It's all about where is your planning ride in it. If you'll ride it most of the time in forest which have mostly wild roads, bridge club can be better option. If your paths are less wild compare to fully jungle; like %75 dirt road and %25 wild forest then Ogre can be better. The bikes have very close riding genre so other options can be more important then these slight differences. Like if you have favorite personal tyre size or wanna gear-hub or not. My path was more wild but i selected the Ogre because there is an Rohloff option

      If you are set on a Rohloff Hub I would go with an Ogre. You can make a BC work, but it will be difficult. Since you are building a wheel I would consider getting the wheels built as 27.5 rather than 29 if you need a smaller bike. This will make the bike easier to handle and better for a smaller ride. Obviously I don’t know your size, but if the small Ogre is close the smaller wheels might give you the right fit.

      Both bikes will be fine if you get the right size. But, I prefer the smaller 27.5" wheel size of the Bridge Club for shorter riders. If you want the other capabilities of the Ogre you could put a smaller 27.5" wheel on it and have a very similar fit and ride as the Bridge Club.

    That's for the review of the two bikes. Did you say there's no inner eyelet on the Ogre fork? So a Tubus Duo front rack can now only be installed on the BC, not on the Ogre? Why do you think they did that?

    • @ottawabikeandtrail
      @ottawabikeandtrail  8 місяців тому

      Yes, inner eyelet is gone. Not sure about Tubus but the Surly racks accommodate the wider mounting points on the outside of the fork.

      They are $1499 US dollars. Shipping to Vietnam would be challenging.

    The bridge club has 141 qr boost hub no through axle and vertical dropout it has been a big No for me.
    So I choose the Ogre and it's an amazing bike

  • @sjanzeir

    As a shorter rider who prefers basic bikes with highly standardized components that just work as designed and as intended out of the box, the Bridge Club would be the no-brainer choice for me.

    These bike's look heavy duty.. I notice how the cables are continuous throughout the design. I wonder how that effects maintenance.? Sort of ziptied on there..

    I have a feeling the ogre is going to be gone soon. They seem too similar and times are too tough rn. Just like how the ECR is gone now.

    • @ottawabikeandtrail
      @ottawabikeandtrail  9 місяців тому +4

      I hope not. I think Surly dropped the Troll and ECR to consolidate down to the Bridge Club and Ogre in the All-Road touring group. I'd like to think this is a good mix.

      Maybe I'll do a frame bag options video! The three bottle mounts should allow you to run a half frame bag with bottles.

    Someone designed a 3D plug inset into the space on the rear of the BC that allows you to mount the kickstand....would like to see those made so BC owners could just buy one instead of hunting down a 3D printing company to make one from the CAD drawings.

    Жаль эти велосипеды не продаются в России. Но зачем они уменьшили количество бонок на вилке в два раза? На старые вилки можно было повесить гораздо больше багажа.

    My 2022 Ogre has water color for paint - pure junk. The rear wheel flexes hard on corners. The frame mounts are awesome, bike pedals easy and rolls forever. Will go for "normal people" brand if anything comes out in touring bikes. In mean while will paint frame and fork.

    • @ottawabikeandtrail
      @ottawabikeandtrail  4 місяці тому

      What color was your Ogre? Some of the paint holds up better than others. I’ve never really had a paint problem, but I have seen a few colors that were more prone to scratches.

And the bummer is that i wanted a peg-stand but i couldnt without wrecking the frame , i mean i cant live without a peg stand ,,now i cant plus i could if only i knew and i had waited....
