I recently built up a Surly BC, in part because of your build series. I didn’t copy exactly how you did yours as my needs were different, I went with a bunch of new and old parts. But I decided to take it on proper mountain bike trails in Rotorua, and I’m genuinely surprised how well it rode, and unbelievably comfortable. Brooks saddle, 3” tyres and a Soma Dream hi rise bars are the stand out bits that make it work for me. A very underrated bike frame that does everything well.
@@ottawabikeandtrail I kinda expected to get battered about on a rigid fork, but truly think the combination of 3” tyre and those bars are a revelation. I’d never tried bars with that amount of swept back angle. It’s amazing.
It seems like that beautiful Tanglefoot does what most of the other bikes do, but in a modern package. I empathize, though-I have a Mongoose ATB and as much as I say I’m going to let go of it, I never quite have the willpower to. It’s just so cool.
Here’s my thoughts if I owned these collections…. Since I already got the best looking Bridgestones XO-1, I don’t need the other Bridgestones. I would convert the Surly Pacer to a classic with upside down Albatross handlebar. The Mongoose ATB looks good, I will keep it =) As for the Tanglefoot, I would set it up like a winter bike with some wide handlebar to match the bike. Basically the look of a bike is what excites me to go for a ride with it. =)
Great videos! I wish I lived closer that 1,954 miles away from your shop. XO-4 - Sell (You have the pinnacle X0-1.) Pacer - Keep (It sounds like it'll make a great road bike in your style.) RB-T - Sell (You have other much cooler bikes.) Mongoose - Sell (I think it may be too big for you?) Mt Whitney - Sell (You’ll eventually find something from that genre that is perfect for you.) Moonshiner - Sell (Build up something with more "traditional" lines, like an Otso Fenrir Stainless or Black Mountain La Cabra.)
I think the first Bridgestone would be great with an internal 8 speed hub. Surly Pacer needs a frame pump! The RB-T is gorgeous. Too bad about the BB. Keep the Mongoose. The Tanglefoot is too big for you but the bar height is great for your geometry. I hear you about a hardtail MTB as your dedicated mountain bike. You're probably better off re-homing the Moonshiner. All bikes are tough to sell when we get familiar with them. That's why I'm giving you permission to sell. XD Look forward to part 3. I hope there's some vintage/antiques. My favorite bike this year with the most miles clocked on it has been a 1961 Raleigh.
I'd offer up the Mongoose for sale at an elevated price. If someone bites, it was meant to be. Being all original, you're gonna be reluctant to use it as intended. Let it hang on someone else's wall.
More cool bikes, I would probably sell 4 of the five and have a custom steel touring bike built, the. Do her up for prom like the rest of your collection. I waiting for my Bilenky signature tour light in the next week or two. I could t be more excited
My two cents...Part out the Bridgestone including the frame and fork. The powder coat is a nice selling point. The pacer is a keeper for me! If your looking to do a wide tire road bike, a set of Paul racer center pulls would certainly help with braking duties and style points! The RB-T sounds like a gonner already, excluding the parts. I'd lean towards the Mongoose as well. The Moonshiner is a tough call for me, since I'm fairly local to Analog Cycles and they rock! Good luck with the process!
@@ottawabikeandtrail when I get it I will send you the link to the UA-cam vid I do. I have loved the process, got to pretty much pick everything on the bike from cranks to wheels and groupset.
The stickers were done several years ago. I believe that we used VeloCals, but they have since closed. Here’s a list of companies that do bicycle decals. You might reach out and see if someone would be able to make some for you. groodybros.com/custom-graphics
Is the frame of the X-04 same steel tubing, diameters, butting and welding as the X-01? Or are they different? Or is it just the parts that were different?
Not the same. The X0-1 is lugged and the XO-4 is not. Also the fork on the XO-1 has a unique crown that sets it apart. I think the frame geometry is the same.
I would sell then, it’ll be a prize for someone else but you have the better frame and better parts on the X-01, so the X-04 doesn’t fill any of your voids and so won’t ever make you truly happy, you won’t seek it out for a ride no matter what you put on it
if i could have 10 bikes, i would just maybe keep the rb-t out of this group. looks nice and why sell this one and keep another working bike to modify it to something simular to the rb-t. those projects stay undone in most collections (same with instruments and other stuff). just sell those bikes to someone who use them as they are. if you downsize a collection make all the remaining bikes the "grail" bikes for you so you cant decide which one to ride right now. (exept historical oriented collections maybe)
So, that’s a Rivendell inspired thing. Use a derailleur as chain tensioner. The bike has two chainrings in front so you can manually swap between them. It’s a cool idea. We’re planning to rework the bike soon.
If it were me, I’d strip the parts off the RB-T, and put ‘em on the Pacer. Then I’d keep the Pacer and the Mongoose, and sell everything else. I’d also replace that Tanglefoot with a hardtail… even if I didn’t mountain bike much, a true hardtail MTB will way outperform that thing.
Great video per usual! So many rad bikes, I'm looking forward to the next video!
Thank you! I appreciate the comment.

Awesome that we helped inspire your build. I agree it’s an underrated bike. Love the Soma bars also.

Thanks! Great feedback.
I just got a dark green Brigestone MB-5 from 1992, with almost all its original parts, one of my favorite brands of bicycles from the 80s and 90s

Keep that Pacer 650B. It's an interesting idea and looks like it works better than expected. Never seen anyone else try that before.
That rbt is gorgeous id take it with the bb issue any day of the week
It’ll be for sale soon.

Sooooo…..what I heard is basically you’re keeping all of them? I would too! 😊
Yeah, that’s what it sounds like. But, I have to make some hard decisions and move at least a few of these.
Sell the XO-4. Keep the Mongoose. Sell the Moonshiner. You don't seem too enthusiastic about it. Great video!
Keep making videos. We need more Alt bike channels.
Thanks, We'll keep it up.
Keep the 650b wheel on the surly pacer It will make the bike a unicorn 😊

That’s a good point.
thanks for the tour...

Gotta keep the mongoose!
If you're on the fence, you might as well just hop over. Sell them and put extra effort into the ones you want to keep.
Shame about the bb on the rb-t. Sell that one. Also the XO-4 since you already have the X0-1 and 1>4. I totally understand having many bikes though.
that Tanglefoot looks pretty unique and badass....you should hang on to it...

What are you using for long reach calipers in your 700c to 650c conversions?
The brakes we are using are Rivendell Silver. We have also used Paul Comp Motolites.

The Mongoose ATB is super rare
Yeah, I don’t see them in this condition very often.
Nice video. But to be honest, they all look pretty similar to me. No major differences. For instance, none of them has suspension.
May I ask which price range for wheelsets tends to be most popular by your customers, please recommend to me.
