Howdy folks and welcome! I hope this finds you well. Today I'll be going through the whole game of Heart of the Swarm, talking about gameplay, visuals, audio and of course, the nitty gritty of the story elements that made this game different from every previous game in the Franchise. Heart of the swarm isn't necessarily bad, but ironically, lacks a lot of the heart from the first game. What do ...

6:14:30 The infinite cycle is: At the end of a universe's life, the Xel'naga create a new Big Bang or something, creating a new universe. Then they spread life on planets, creating brand new kinds of life not seen in their last universe. After they've proliferated life, they go dormant, leaving a few clues of the location of their slumber. Once life evolves and spreads to the stars, they find their clues and end up finding the Xel'naga. From the life they've spread, a species pure of form and a species pure of essence (psyonic power) finds them and awaken the Xel'Naga. There, the Xel'Naga aid the two species (Pure of form and essence) to merge into a new generation of Xel'Naga. What ended up happening in this universe is; Amon was one of the Xel'Naga, but went bad. He wanted to rid the universe of life so that suffering could end. So after the Xel'Naga went to slumber, he just got to work and made the Protoss, beings pure of essence(?) and either created or aided the Zerg to evolve into beings pure of form(?). TLDR; he made the Protoss and told them they were the firstborn of the galaxy and pushed the Zerg to evolve into the biological machines they are. He then killed the Xel'Nagas so that they couldn't interfere with his plans, somehow missing one. He also made the hybrids, beings made out of combining Protoss and Zerg together, making 'Xel'Naga' but, clearly, they both were not quite to the level of purity of form and essence that they needed to be to become Xel'Naga, otherwise, they'd probably be on par in terms of power with Amon, whereas, they are just pretty bulky. They are pretty much the ultimate beings that could be made out of the creatures out of this universe. So, to have a fighting chance against Amon, in the end, Ouros wished to combine his form(?) with Kerrigan's essence(?), cheating the system by creating a Xel'Naga out of the combination of himself and the "Purest" being in this universe. Now I'm not saying it's a good story or anything, just that on a basic level, it makes sense and works. It is dumb tho and isn't cool, it just feels like the characters got thrown into their positions out of nowhere. It's silly and could be so much better.

Also whether I'm wrong about which one is pure of form or essence doesn't matter. Either way, whoever has which, they combine to form a new being.

The first mission of the epilogue is at least fun gameplay wise. Yes, the story is bad and the other missions are boring and uninspired. The push through the map, destroying the void emitters and teammates taking space, just like in the terrans in the LOTV Korhal missions is fun.

Oh, another comment. SC2 mirrors the base game in terms of race. WoL->HotS->LotV mirrors the base game, and the Epilogue mirrors the Brood War race order with Protoss->Terran->Zerg. On the note of the campaign order in your LotV segment, I think it could’ve been nice to have each race go in the slot they have yet to. HotS (Kerrigan starts as Queen of Blades and evolves to primal form to get enough power to kill Mengsk to keep mostly the same story) into LotV (All 3 main characters unite to fight Amon) and finally with WoL where Jim fulfills his promise to kill Kerrigan after she goes Queen Bitch of the Universe mode 2.0

I agree with you that shadow is the best in the series, however i think when you play all the games back to back i think cop ends up becoming the favorite simply because its the most refined and different from the other entries. I played all the games in a row and cop was very refreshing getting an all new map with new areas to explore.

I love how SC2 trilogy part progresses from "What are you guys talking about, this thing is great!" to "Oh... I see now...". Which reminds me of my own experience with SC2 trilogy. I've started playing SC2 sometime before HotS and by HotS I loved it so much I preordered the collectors edition and after playing the campaign I was like "What the heck is this Disney BS?". Also Swarm Host meta in pro SC2 was super boring to watch. When LotV came out I also got the collectors edition, though I had so bad PC at the time I couldn't even get 30FPS but I still finished the campaign and I quickly forgot so much about it besides the fact that it suddenly turned into "the forces of good vs the ultimate biga bad boss" which was very disappointing for this universe. I bought and played through the Nova missions once the last pack came out and I don't remember anything from it. Somehow it was more forgettable than the LotV epilogue for me. The thing that also doesn't help LotV is that a lot of coop missions were based on LotV and I more remember them from coop than from the campaign.

No spoilers idk what you do or dont know so no spoilers whatsoever Can't wait for the rest of this series. I had to sell my xboxes play stations Nintendo consoles, every game I had for those consoles, every cord controller everything during the pandemic and i haven't been able to replace them, nor do I have a pc or computer of any kind. All i got is my galaxy phone, so imagine my excitement when i discovered YESTERDAY you can stream games to your phone with Xbox game pass, and buy other games to play on your phone, even some games have touch controls, which suck, but you can also buy a controller xbox or otherwise and Bluetooth or USB to your phone, and play any game available on cloud. Today I bought Xbox game pass, and a couple days and I'm buying a controller, I actually got gears 5 to work with touch controls on a galaxy a14 g5, so then i we even got gears 1 ultimate edition to boot on to the main menu, but doesn't support touch controls so I can't play it till I get a controller, but that should be 2 to 3 days from now, so I'm extremely excited and hopeful it works properly with all the cloud games I wanna play, but gears 5 ran way better than I expected, no lag in multi-player whatsoever, but I only played 3 2 round games so maybe it will lag eventually, and I played the campaign all the way up to where kate ruins the rest of the game, which is a few hours in, again no spoilers, and I've only had 2 or 3 small frame rate dips for about 2 or 3 seconds then it stopped. I'm genuinely amazed how well it ran on my phone including the touch controls. Any touch control issues I had were mainly my fault because I just pressed an inch off the button I was aiming for in the middle of firefight, but thats a lot of mobile touch controls. So hopefully this continues to work and it will be so fucking sick, imagine going 5 years watching everything come out knowing you can't play it, or watching people play old games you love knowing you can't play it, and then one day Xbox descends from the sky in a beam of light and says "hey dumb ass you can play the shit on your phone, just pay 20 dollars and maybe get a controller, boom all the new and old games you love, or most of them anyway" and then you do that and it fucking worked. Blew my mind. Lmao had to share because it feels like the twilight zone

Thank you so much for writing this! I actually tried out unlimited game pass for streaming gears 2 for the retrospective, however, I had such a bad time with frame rates and lag, it was unplayable, and I have gigabyte internet! I had to go through a lot of hoops to get it working, even if the shaders sometimes went wonky. I’m so glad you’re having a good time finding ways to enjoy these games! Can’t wait to start writing the gears 2 script, it was so much fun to play!

My first experience with StarCraft and Brood War were when I lived in Japan in 2009. I was 7 at the time and it was one of two games on my dad’s laptop (SWTOR being the other). When WoL and HotS dropped, we played through them together. Protoss had always been my favorite race, so we were eagerly awaiting what would eventually become LotV, but he passed away in 2014. Legacy was the first game or expansion I opened for the first time without him, and everything relating to Zeratul and Artanis’s relationship hit all the harder. The track “My Life for Auir” brings me to tears every time. We also don’t talk about the epilogue, what epilogue?

Oh and kerrigan having seemly no problem turning back into the queen of blades is ridiculous and a huge character regression seeing that she was seemly haunted by her past and worried that she might turn back into a monster.. and then just does it with little hesitation in the moment is pretty lazy writing. Before she underwent that transformation she needed to really show hesitancy or something to show it was a tough decision or better yet, have it be necessary! Like for example maybe the zurvan have her gain essance or whatever and he becomes a supremely powerful being and begins to control all the primal zerg, he is able to start dominating kerrigan forces and she is facing complete destruction she now only has one choice undergo the transformation back to the queen of blades or fail her goal, boom! Now you have tension and a tough decision, which is a lot more cool and more natural than just her going "oh yeah ill become the queen of blades again why not lol! Revenge is all that matters" I just dont like how Kerrigan is so inconsistent, sometimes she is regret of her past and worried of what she might become and the next is spouting the most evil lines, destroying escaping terran and protoss with barely a care, and whole planets with barely any remorse. Its like they couldn't decide to make her a monster or a sympathetic hero and it's just bad lol!

Okay for the zerg advisors I like aburthur and zaguar. For aburthur its intriguing to see his insight on the zerg, how methodical and cold he is and the his tangents on how to improve the zerg is really cool, also the little character moments where he gets frustrated by the primal zerg ability to steal his work or his intense desire to know more of kerrgians new form until she forces him away gives him a lot of character in my opinion. As for zagara i love how at first she questions kerrigan not understanding a lot of her perspective, and i like how Kerrigan teaches her it, and makes her go to aburthur to undergo evolution to get smarter and more independent. So its really neat to see zagara at the end who seems to better understand Kerrigan and seems more like her own person with perspective of her own, i like that progession. Now the rest of them are pretty bland, izsha is the most boring character ever with nothing notable or interesting just spouting generic lines, dehaka just constantly spouts about wanting essance very one note character which gets boring, stukov... well i just dont him being alive and is just felt more like fanservice plus i dont really buy he would want to join the queen of blades of all people he wasnt bad but i would prefer if they didnt bring him back. So yeah i dont like much of the zerg advisors but i will totally defend zagara and aburthur.

Normally, a Starcraft campaign centers around a race. During SC1, the Zerg campaign had almost no heroes, except for above-average stat nameless zerg and when Kerrigan does hatch. I never thought of this as a downside - the Zerg still overhear and talk to the other races. In BW especially, Kerrigan is playing all the other factions off each other so as you said before we learn about her and the Zerg via her interactions with people that push back, don't trust her, or have to. One-note Zerg 'characters' defeat the idea of the Zerg. Brood mothers have to now be named characters like the Cerebrates? They need to be upgraded? You could honestly replace all Zerg dialogue in HotS with snarls and growls and the impact on the player would be the same.

  • @Pangora2
    @Pangora2 7 днів тому

During the Warfield scene this could have been Kerrigan's lowest point of really losing her humanity, she pulls the swarms back from finishing off the humans. This is when she has absolute control over the swarm and when she actually starts to learn to get control of herself instead of Force-Crushing anyone that is a Protoss or Terran who disagree with her. We had infested Stukov but not Warfield? Stukov was deep inside a facility that made it hard for Zerg to communicate or do anything. But they decided to save Stukov? Okay... Warfield at least came from these games and he's right there on Char. Stukov isn't an asset for the remaining story - he's UED. Infest Warfield could be useful against Mengsk. Instead of going for a great story with great moments, they went for shock and drama that just doesn't hold up.

I would've kept the same campaign order, Wings of Liberty is legendary, its ending should not be undone, Kerrigan should have stayed human, The Zerg campaign in the middle could have been a very interesting story about the Zerg evolving past the events, especially with the inclusion of Primal Zerg, not that Kerrigan would be completely left out of this story but she could simply act as a small force to push the Zerg in a better or more useful direction, hell the Campaign can even touch on some beats from HoTS about the fact that whether we like it or not the Zerg are also living creatures. infact i would go so much as to say its the Zerg campaign that needs a 3 part series, 2 small campaigns sandwiching a main campaign, The zerg would have a duality in respecting Kerrigan and Zegarah but Kerrigan will not get too involved to not cause too much conflict, the Zerg shouldn't be seen as so one or 2 dimensional beings. While the main zerg campaign will be filled with things i can't even comprehend now, the starting and ending mini campaigns will be Kerrigan and Jim Raynor focused mostly regarding a subtle nudge to the zerg but really, preparing everything to kill Mengsk, Hell, i would go as far as to say there should be Zeratul side quests in the Zerg campaign as well to proceed the Amon plotline. And in the third and final campaign, it should just be, a Campaign after everything in the Zerg Campaign, the perfect setup is made for the Protos to have one, singular, overarching grand campaign to fight and defeat Amon finally, and this time the side mini quests should be involved with part Jim Raynor and part Zegarahs swarm, maybe Kerrigan would be there just so consult with Zegarah a little. These side quests would help flesh out the bond between Artanis and Jim Raynor with missions that involve them, and on the flip side with Zegarah explain how Amon bested and defeated her ultimately and took control over most of the zerg and soon followed by corrupting the Protos and the kala. The main campaign should obviously have its own characters, arcs, and dynamics, just changed accordingly with the new story, and Artanis + Jim friendship should continue even there, where possible. Keep in mind that while all 3 campaigns have what i refer to as Side Quests, only the Swarm campaign will have those intro and outro mini campaigns outside of the main one that showed with its own menu card.

4:01 "Medics in starcraft are very badass" [Shows Lt. Morales from Heroes of the Storm] Granted, Lt. Morales was one of the medics who administered drugs to the Overmind on the last mission of the terran campaign in Brood War. And making your way through several thousand zerg and stabbing an Overmind with a needle IS pretty badass.

Actually, if Tosh is alive AND Dr Hanson is still on board, she would inform you that what Nova said was a lie. So… she was doing this more of a personal matter XD

Thank you so much for writing this! Same here, it really opened my eyes to what sci fi could be! And the fact you can control all the units, it was purely awesome! Hope all is well!

Clear Sky IS the dumbest faction in Stalker with no competition, since they in order to stop 1 guy from reaching the center of the zone brought like 50, what were they expecting to hapen, there was still shit ton on Clear Sky member's near the center so C-Con just blasted them all

I really hope the next SC game is NOT a main line game. I want the series to continue, and I think there's too many people who are anti-RTS at the moment. So, I'm hoping for a spinoff game, like a "Starcraft: Terran Marine" where you play a marine either first or third person and fight against hordes of enemies, sorta like Helldivers 2 or 40K Space Marine 2. You could even have it so you can swap between different units on deployment so you aren't restricted to just marines

Nope, you got that completely wrong, reckon not withstanding, the Overmind had no idea where the Protoss home world was was, it later gained that information through Zeratul's assassination of the cerebrate Zasz. what the Overmind got upon the assimilation of the Xel naga was their knowledge of all the races the xel naga had messed with so it knew only that the Protoss were on the edge of galaxy and that they were powerful psionic race, it then searched for a way to deal with the Protoss happening across humanity and its latent psionics and so set its plan in motion, and when the protoss turned up the Overmind decided to pull back and watch to study the protoss and after seeing the protoss burn chau sara it decided to wait and see how events play out between the terrans and protoss while it built up its power base. (taken from the Original 1998 manual written by Chris Metzen and James Phinney - original story and script writers) As for its it suicide run of Auir it had no intention of dying there, but it didnt count on tassadar's use of both dark templar and templar energies, believing itself immune and un killable.
