How the Oilers should think and use the draft going forward
Join host Nick Zararis on this episode of Locked on Oilers for a philosophical discussion on the utility of the draft as a Stanley Cup contender, why the Ken Holland era bore so little fruit at the NHL level and how to think about the draft going forward as the Oilers seek to maintain their contender status into the late 20s and early 30s of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

    The Oilers had a good playoff run but I hope they properly learned the lessons dealt to them because their fans sure as heck didn't. The Oil weren't the playoff juggernaut their fans think they were. LA was a pushover. The Kings were just happy to be in the post season. The Oil wouldn't have even come close to beating Vancouver if the Canucks weren't missing their top two goalies, had a no-show in Pettersson and had no Boeser in game 7. The Oil had luck bend their way. Then Dallas... Dallas burned out half way through that series. Benn and Seguin looked like they simultaneously said "Woof, this is too hard. I'm tired. Time to hit the greens." Even then, it required McDavid to stand on his head and carry the team. Then Edmonton faces a real team. A perfectly rounded team and got their arses handed to them 3 games straight. It would have been over in 4 but Florida derailed themselves. Edmonton didn't solve the Panthers' system like the Oilers fans delusionally think they did. Florida just let the annihilation go to their heads and let their egos run wild. The Cats started living in the "we already won the Cup, now how are we going to celebrate" universe. They fell apart and desperately started playing run'n gun, rush hockey against the Oilers. Big mistake. As soon as Florida got their heads straight, they went back to their killer system and won the Cup. This is more or less, the truth of what happened although Edmonton fans can't stomach it. That doesn't matter, though. What matters is if the Oilers learned from their playoff reality. If they did, then they'll solve their shoddy defense. They'll solve the need for more secondary scoring. They'll solve how to motivate Draisaitl when the going gets tough. And they'll solve how to keep McDavid from being absolutely shut down by opposing defensive forwards. The whole NHL was taught a free lesson by Barkov. He just wrote the book on how to neutralize McJesus. If the Oilers solve these issues, they'll probably win the Cup next year.

    • @therealrockguru
      @therealrockguru 13 годин тому

      So much wrong with what you said. Barkov didn't "solve McJesus" 😅 the Oilers finally figured out how to score on Barkov, the same way Vegas learned how to score on him in the final last year. The Oilers came within 2 goals of winning the whole thing against Florida. What you don't mention is how difficult it is to come from three down, even with the miraculous come back to a seventh game, it was the Oilers that felt burnt out finally in game 7. The Oilers gave Florida issues all throughout the series and Florida didn't dominate game 1, that was a lucky win in OT.

    Interesting take - I had thought that Edmonton's defense and goaltending gave them a fair chance to win, the lads just didn't quite bury enough chances and attrition wore down some key players. Leon especially was a shadow of himself in Game 7 - no disrespect to the player, you could see the desire, but you could also see his body just wouldn't do it.

  • @neillore7332

    9:16 - I think you might be selling the average Oilers fan short. Most knowledgeable fanbase I've spoken to. As an Oilers fan, IMO when we look bad it's for acting boorish (ie tossing trash on the ice when we don't like a call) than for hockey ignorance. Lots of Oilers fans played ice hockey themselves, and it shows. IMO it's why the fanbase loves blue collar players so much - they can relate to the guy who manages to play a couple seasons in a league higher than he 'should' play in because he works so hard and takes such risks.

  • @neillore7332
    @neillore7332 3 дні тому

    Nurse and Connor are best buds. We're probably better off making the best of an awful contract, which is 100% Oilers management's fault btw, they used the hammer hard when they held it in contract negotiations with the player, kept giving him lowball bridges, then put themselves into a position where the player held the hammer. They could sign a bad contract or lose him for nothing. This is maybe the last remnant of the DoD. BUT.... that's not the player's fault. Nurse is plenty good if you value him for what he's good at, instead of his contract. Also, he and Connor are best buds.

    Theres More to a defenseman than puck retrieval and puck distribution. You mentioned Nurse leads the team in blocked shots. Theres immense value there. He also defends your star players, with his physicality. Maybe if all of edmonton didnt hate on him he would have more confidence and be better. Nurse is a minutes eater who is overpaid sure, but he is still a really good player.

    Interesting dig but you never mentioned a huge factor that frames the player and his maligned contract = the Covid era flat cap. The business operations plan of every team anticipated growth each season which, by design, annually reduced the strain of bigger % contracts like Nurse’s. Not including this massive implication denies contextual awareness to put the appropriate lens on the contract’s present complexion and team’s frustrated restriction. Instead of $88mil, the cap could be about $105mil by now. Would this change the fan stress and pressure of the Nurse contract? Maybe, maybe not. Haters gonna hate lol but the raises of other players off ELC and inflation during the flat cap is what further damned the contract and the player. Perfect storm all around. I hope he has a great season and $9mil is the new $6mil soon.

    At the time, drafting Nurse was the pick to make because they desperately needed a stud dman. He was actually the 1st Dman selected in the 1st round by the Oilers since 1989. He did everything right, spent time in the minors, worked his way up to the top pairing, and even logged over 30 minutes a game during his first few playoffs runs. Seeing him struggling after signing the "contract" is tough.

    NMC - not here the don't - Kenny and Peter gave them out as an addition to paying top dollar. Remember Lucic- 6m X 7 PLUS a full NMC - crazy stuff. Now, RNH's deal is good - that is a time when you put a NMC in. If I were a player I would want top dollar- and no NMC, if I was giving my team a 'discount' to play there, then I would insist on the NMC.

    Should do more research on Savoie... he's a similar style player to Brayden Point, is producing more than Point at the same age, and his PNHLe comparison has him at 74 points in the NHL. You seem to be severely neutering any expectations of him just so when he does blow the doors off on the place, you can tell yourself "oh that was a happy accident". Additionally he barely missed being the first player ever in the WHL to ever get exceptional player status. You never know til you know and there is some risk with him still being a prospect who has moslty only played junior to this point. But he definitely has potential to become a 1st line player, even on this stacked roster. So Oilers fans should be very excited about that. Whatever will be will be, he'll have to earn it first, but we got a lot more of a player than you're letting on.

      Like, I enjoy being pleasantly surprised as much as the next guy... but if you're trying to provide educated NHL analysis, I feel like you kinda missed that mark here with your evaluation of Savoie. "barely holding on to an NHL roster spot with his 'little bit' of offensive upside" ??? Lol, that's scoffable. Dude will make the NHL and he will put up numbers. He has a nose for the net, he's highly skilled and a very good skater too. He will score a lot of points in the NHL and will likely not be able to stay on the Oilers for more than 3 years because he's gonna price himself off this team.

    Nice work, Nick. Keep it up! Btw, if I remember correctly Holland did let Kane take a look at the FA market before he came back and signed with the Oilers.

      So is Draistal but teams usualyy do it a year before to avoid losing them for nothing, kinda like NYI with Tavares

    I wonder if the new trick will be similar to the Gudreau incident. Ok Kane have a 15 team list! Oilers at the deadline put him on waivers and ducks pick him up, oilers then trade them a 2nd rounder for future considerations. I personally hope they keep him and LTIR him not only for the cap but so he’s 100% healthy. The best season for him was his HALF season where he ran the flames out of the building!

    The Oilers took in their recycle empties and checked under the sofa cushions and came short of having the millions we need to give raises. So we aren't trading equivalents...we're freeing up money, so hold on we're going to be unloading players for virtually nothing. For the water or skate shine boys. Jackson was caught jacking 50 catalytic converters. Lucky it was his first offense...he is out on bail.
