Frozen Solitude in Grisaille - Part 4 - Mid-ground Trees
This series of videos documents the progression of my version of "Frozen Solitude" by Bob Ross. I've executed the painting in grayscale, which is known as grisaille. This time, I'm working on the trees in the near distance.
The challenge was to paint the painting without using a black pigment, so I mixed a chromatic black using Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. A big part of the challenge was getting the right shade of gray mixed for each painting session.
To soften the paint, I used a classic painting medium recipe: approximately 60% linseed/walnut oil blend + 40% odorless mineral spirits.

I wanted to do something special with my Facebook group by providing a different kind of challenge for members to get involved with. Typical painting challenges require everyone to paint the same image and submit the finished result for everyone to see. But I think the journey is just as interesting as the destination. In order to incorporate that idea, I knew I needed to make our challenges ab...
Beginner's Realism Course - Part 4.3 - Detailing the Belly

I’m looking for a table top frame for the same size canvas what would you recommend?
Hi, approximately how much paint did you use?
👍👍👍
Just watched your interview with Gabi. Very interesting to learn more about you. Really enjoyed it. Thanks you for sharing.
WTH! Amazing!
Amazing work..
Absolutely beautiful!!
Please post full version? Thanks
I'll be doing more paintings soon.

I love 💞, the amount of information 💓 you give 💝 in this 💖, interesting💓,,. 💞Video thanks for the beautiful video you share,💯,,💓.
Thank you so much!
Love the colour mixing.
Thanks. I like just using five colors.
Just what I've been looking for. Indirect method. Thank you for posting.
Thanks I'm glad you like it!
I wish you would state the names as you go along to make it easier for us to follow along
Which names? The names of the brushes? Colors?
😊😊😊
Hi David, watched this series all the way through, disappointed to find the rest of it missing though. What happened to the second painting and detail painting?
Unfortunately my life got turned around rather abruptly and I had to stop and move to another state. I've been unable to produce videos entirely since last year, unfortunately. I do plan to get things running again as soon as I'm able. It's been a long year.
Hermosos los tutoriales, me encantaría ver el final. 👏👏👏
Hi love your work wanted to know if you could do a video more Pacific on clouds and different kinds Ty
Yes I can. Time is always very lean, but I can certainly try to put some focus on clouds.
Yy David!
Beautiful art. I’m amazed at how well you make it look in just a short amount of time. (SC)
Thank you! It just takes time to practice, then things get easier and faster.
Beautiful artwork. Congratulations! Hug
Thank you!
Hi my friend. Thanks for the great video you shared with us. very interesting Really nice movie thanks for sharing it. please keep in touch ..💞., .💓.💕.💞.,.
Absolutely. I'll have more content up here as soon as I can set up the studio again and get back to working on the channel.
This is amazing
Thank you!
I like the way the trees turned out with the #2 brush, and I like the addition of trees on the right. They all do look very natural! Thank you David.
Yes, they turned out nicely. I enjoy doing trees with the small rounds, and also with small filberts.
@@davidbrancato5339 Oh I agree David, I love a filbert for evergreens!
Thank you
You're welcome!
I'm so happy that I found your amazing video. Absolutely stunning approach and style, thanks for sharing your unique tasteful art.
This is how a typical class goes. One of my main goals with this was, in fact, to give people an idea of it. This was back when lock-downs were in effect, so I needed a way to show people.
I do it differently but this is good!
Can I ask what brand of brush you are using that has a black handle? I love that you go slow and don't rush through a painting! This is looking great, way better than mine will be! Lol
It's Kevin Hill's 1" flat. These are the only ones I use. I love them.
Oh and yes, I like going slow. There's no reason to rush anything ;)
@@davidbrancato5339 Thank you David, I have never tried Kevin's brushes, I will have to do that. 🌹
Спасибо за интересную работу и подробные объяснения!
I'm sorry I can't figure out how to translate this...
David this is an extremely good learning series, can’t wait for part 3. I like the way you do the mountains and highlights. They look more rugged and realistic. Thanks again!
Thank you!
Loved this David. I use the filbert for clouds almost all the time. It's a great brush for many things.
Yes it is!
@@davidbrancato5339 have you tried using the Gamblin toxic free liquid? The gel is great for plein air- the liquid is good for using in the method you’ve shown here- Also- for coating canvas prior-like the Ross method for wet on wet…. I found using the liquid or gel - mixing burnt umber and coat canvas to take white of canvas- and blend just like you’ve done here- (any other color as well for coating canvas)…
@@davidbrancato5339 please come back and post clouds- I just found your channel and watched a few videos- I enjoy your teaching style- filbert- see the brush- I just read your description- please come back and talk about how you use the radiant oil paints- I have all the colors and haven’t tried them yet- Great lesson here- would so appreciate you do a tutorial on clouds using the filbert and the radiant colors- pretty sunset- and or cloudscape-
@@davidbrancato5339 is that a Kevin Hill one inch? I have all of his brushes and oil DVDs….
@@Milania717 Generally I don't like it because it dries too fast. I don't use any mediums with alkyd resin for anything other than the Bob Ross method of painting. For realism I really just enjoy allowing the paint to dry naturally.
Very nice David. You definitely have a technique of your own. Turned out great!
Thank you. I need to do more technique videos...
Loved it David! I love the 1" too! I will be doing this one also on my channel after the first of the year.
I hardly ever use the 2" for anything. It's just too big.
@@davidbrancato5339 I agree completely. The 1" brush does amazing things! I chose those same colors for my challenge only I use WMO. Looking forward to your next steps.
@@PaintingWithYovette WMO? I'm working on the foothills video at the moment.

Oh, alright. I've never seen anyone abbreviate it before!
Hi David. I love your work, especially this beginner series. Did you ever finish it? It’s such a great resource.
Thanks! You know, it's funny but every time I prepare to sit down and finish the thing something else comes up and I have to put it on the back burner again. It's almost finished! I just need to do the wing and grass...
@@davidbrancato5339 please come back…
Hi David. Thanks so much for this video. I watched it again now after a year of starting painting and it means even more now. So is this the alla prima method as supposed to the layering method with the robin above? Did you do another layer over this nuthatch?
This wasn't alla prima, no. It took me a week or so to finish it. I completed it in about four sessions I believe. Maybe three long ones. It is, however, all in one layer. The robin is done in multiple layers over the course of several weeks. I don't use any mediums to speed drying - I like to let it all dry naturally and that means allowing a week or two to pass between layers. Speaking of time passing I really need to finish that robin haha.
David this is a beautiful painting! I wish i had this video in real time. Thank You very much!
There will be more my friend. Stay tuned.
@@davidbrancato5339 hi, can you post full version of this? Or perhaps more full versions…your clouds are beautiful here- please consider posting a video of painting clouds similar too this if you don’t have the full version… thank you
We need more videos from you sir.
I agree. This year has been crazy, and we are moving on top of that. Once I get settled into my new place and routine I'll get back to this channel.
The content of this series of videos for this painting are invaluable. They're full of detailed information that makes all the difference in applying the paint for a successful and pleasing outcome.
Thank you so much! That was my goal. Next year I'll be able to get back into this channel.
Thank you:-) You have great guidelines and commentary!
Thank you! I still need to finish this thing!
this never works for me, like when you are putting that dark tree on top of the mountain, min 1:12:44, whenever i do this it picks up the colour behind it and become a mess, not a thin dark line like you did.
That layer was dry underneath. I wouldn’t try that over wet paint!
Can I make the base coat with winsor’s liquin ?.
Yes, but you have to make sure you paint into it quickly, and do whatever you need to do in that one sitting. The next time you come back to it, say, the next day, you will no longer be able to blend properly if at all.
This is fantastic
Thank you!
Hi, David, Where did you get the little cans with the snap-on lids that you're using in this demo?
Those are brush cleaning tanks from Michaels or Hobby lobby. I can’t recall which one, but they are available in most art stores.
Hi David. I really looked forward to the rest of this piece? Please keep posting videos. I like your approach a lot!!! Thanks
I keep getting pulled away from it. It’ll happen. There’s only one part left and that’s the wings and grass. The technique is exactly the same as I have been doing, so it won’t be too hard.
amazing, although a 2018 video still very informative, I use same colors for portraits, I love the Madder Deep, Vladimir Volegov use it a lot for his portraits,
This video could have been made centuries ago and it would still be just as relevant. The principles of color theory that I use have been around since painting's origins.
Do you provide a copy of the reference photo of the bird anywhere for people who might want to follow along?
Yes! It's in the description to the second video.
Wondering what's the reasoning behind putting the first gray acrylic layer if you're going to putting multiple coats of a red ground on top of that? Is that still the process you use in 2021?
The acrylic could be any color as long as the finish is not glossy. The color doesn't matter, though I would still be reasonable with selection. I usually go for gray or some neutral tone such as an off-white or buff just as a default. The primary reason for it is to seal the canvas and change its texture. Acrylic paint does a better job of preventing color sinking in oils and it makes the surface smoother. Gesso doesn't do either of those things quite as well, though it is still necessary as a first coat of primer. Yes I still do it because it greatly reduces the need to rely on oiling out in between paint layers. I still may oil out simply to have a wet ground to paint into, but I don't need to rely on it as much to restore color depth and saturation. Furthermore, having a proper minimally-absorbent surface to paint on, combined with proper layer application, all but removes complications when varnishing.
Fabulous job. Subscribed
Thanks for the sub! I appreciate it.
