Frozen Solitude in Grisaille - Part 4 - Mid-ground Trees

  • This series of videos documents the progression of my version of "Frozen Solitude" by Bob Ross. I've executed the painting in grayscale, which is known as grisaille. This time, I'm working on the trees in the near distance.
    The challenge was to paint the painting without using a black pigment, so I mixed a chromatic black using Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. A big part of the challenge was getting the right shade of gray mixed for each painting session.
    To soften the paint, I used a classic painting medium recipe: approximately 60% linseed/walnut oil blend + 40% odorless mineral spirits.

    I like the way the trees turned out with the #2 brush, and I like the addition of trees on the right. They all do look very natural!

      Yes, they turned out nicely. I enjoy doing trees with the small rounds, and also with small filberts.
