Frozen Solitude in Grisaille - Part 2 - Mountains

  • This series of videos documents the progression of my version of "Frozen Solitude" by Bob Ross. I've executed the painting in grayscale, which is known as grisaille. This time, I'm working on the mountains.
    The challenge was to do it without using a black pigment, so I mixed a chromatic black using Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. A big part of the challenge was getting the right shade of gray mixed for each painting session.
    The white base coat is a mixture of Titanium White and Weber's Res•n•gel. To soften the paint, I used a classic painting medium recipe: approximately 60% linseed/walnut oil blend + 40% odorless mineral spirits.

    David this is an extremely good learning series, can’t wait for part 3. I like the way you do the mountains and highlights. They look more rugged and realistic. Thanks again!
