Starting out in 2015, BikingChap relaunched in 2023. We look at in depth reviews and buying tips of some of your favourite bikes with the "On The Drive" series, doing occasional multi-part series of "Will It Run?" with rescued older or neglected bikes to see if we can get them on the road again as well as ad-hoc news and industry comment. At all times we'll remain fiercely independent of the manufacturers and importers and simply 'tell it like it is', why not join us for the ride? :)

Honda NC750X Ultimate Review and Buying Guide
Yes please for a can of XCP.
No problem, I'll add you to the list for the latest competition!
Thanks for making the review
My pleasure, hope you found it useful :)
The best one❤
I certainly think so! :)
Great video! I love the engine in my NC700X. It delivers great real world power and with the addition of a 14" Delkevic pipe (baffle in) it sounds wonderful. Love the fuel efficiency too. The trunk is pure magic. Never knew I needed one and now I don't think I could live without it. The bike's only real weakness is the suspension. The front forks are unbelievably bad for a modern motorcycle. I have Race Tech Gold Valves that I'll be installing over the winter.
Thanks for feedback, much appreciated! I agree re the suspension, it's so frustrating especially when the much cheaper NX500 suspension is so much better. At least the 2025 model has a twin disc setup now.
what year is that nc750??
@@Kenneth_McGrew Hi Kenneth, it’s a 2018 before they lowered the bikes.
Thanks a lot, found this really useful, am looking to buy one of these for use out in Portugal..
Hi, I'm glad it was of use, good luck if you decide to go for one, I don't think you'll be disappointed :)
too heavy--- you dont need 1000cc bike
True but i found the height more of a day to day issue than the weight, it's little more than the NC750X DCT iirc.
Hi, if possible, try LPS 3 premier rust inhibitor. I saw on utube that it is one of the best to prevent corrosion, up to years even in daily outdoor. Would be nice to see it against XCP. Thank you.
The seat on the 500 is just as bad i changed my seat
Interesting, which year was yours as a matter of interest? I found this '22 to be an improvement on the '18 NC.
Thanks for this informative video. You’ve convinced me to get one. Luckily I’m too old to hear any noise on the slides!
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Like you I couldn’t hear the noise, age creeps up on you :) Good luck with your new bike.
I'm amazed that a bike with an engine that size can run with such fuel economy. It's as good as some 125s and better than Honda's own 500cc bikes. Makes you wonder what's the other bike manufacturers' excuse for producing bikes smaller than that which do, say, only 60-70mpg.
It's been designed that way from the ground up. Low power, low revving (which saves a lot of losses) and high gearing. By contrast the similarly sized Honda Hornet engine is a more typical motorcycle engine design and produces 91bhp compared to the NC's ~55bhp but the Hornet will never get close to 100mpg! :)
@ No, the 750cc Hornet is a "power bike". 55mpg, the same as a small car.
Exactly, a big difference isn't it?!
Ottimo video, complimenti 👍... Io in questo momento sto provando a spruzzare ogni 20 giorni su tutta la moto l'olio al silicone.....cosa ne pensi?
Grazie mille! Penso che anche lo spray al silicone funzionerà bene ma dovrai applicarlo spesso, forse più di ogni 20 giorni ma facci sapere come va! Grazie ancora!
@@BikingChap non mancherò di aggiornarvi appena possibile👍.... Buona strada ✌️
Grazie, buona fortuna!
Great review, please add me to prize draw for a can...
That competition has closed now I'm afraid but new videos will be going up shortly where you can a collection of product from XCP professional!
I would recommend replacing these 2 washers from the oil drain plug, these are soft alloy washers that deform when screwed and unscrewed, they are single-use, they can be used more than once but it is not recommended and the oil can start leaking at an unexpected moment and let's not forget that it will drip straight under the rear wheel which can end tragically for us.Thx for nice vid.Regards
A really good point and something I should've pointed out, they cost pennies after all! :)
@@BikingChap no problem my friend, waiting for my honda pcx, tomorrow delivery at morning ❤️Did you specially run in your engine when you bought it new, after how long did you change the oil for the first time, I will probably use 10w30 recommended by Honda, usually people buy 10w40, and you?
@@Muflinn I use 10w30 but I know many use 10w40, especially in warmer countries than the UK. As for running in, I just avoided full throttle use and sustained high speed, not easy on a 125 but just use a bit of common sense. I changed the oil at 600 miles / 1,000 km, hope this helps and you got your new ride today! Enjoy!
@@BikingChap 👍
@@BikingChap thank you sir,I will buy probably 10w30 motul for scooter ❤️
How much should you pay for 2nd hand
Decent ones that are the later model are available from £1,500 and up. Be aware of paying much over £2,000 and you're getting very close to a new bike price with full warranty and finance options etc. Good luck!
Getting mine end of the month. Cant wait! I think i will be more than happy with 60mpg coming from a litre sports bike which i was getting roughly 30mpg or so.
Oh wow, sure, you'll see a big difference and I found it a blast to ride and fast enough to be fun on the crowded roads in the south east. I'm sure you'll love it!
You can fit your helmet in that "frunk" compartment of the 750x. It's soooo soooo soooooo convenient! The Transalp has no such compartment. It would be a huge inconvenience from having one to not having one.
Good point, just check your helmet fits, some do, some don't. Even if the helmet doesn't fit, the frunk is still hugely useful and so much more convenient than a traditional tank bag!
You should try corosion block, it's the same company as acf-50 but design for the purpose you are testing. Acf-50 is a thinner version meat to be atomized into plane wings. I use corosion block for my snowmobiles and vehicles and atvs, and in Canada we have some nasty salt on the roads and it holds up great.
Hi Liam, thanks for the tip, I'll see if we can get that over the counter in the UK and if so will test that this year! All the best, Jon.
@@BikingChap thanks for the great video as well, super informative
@@LiamG903 you're more than welcome, glad it was of use :)
The XCP PRO rust blocker is great for laying a bike up over winter. But if you use your bike during this period, this XCP product will pick up grit and dirt like it's going out of fashion. Only the other hand, Techcote TC200 picks up much less road dirt, but may need reapply during to go the whole winter using the bike on the road. ACF50, this was put about as being the best anti-corroison product 20 years ago. I questioned the fact there were no reviews. No-one could explain. I never used it on my bikes, and seems to be vindicated here in BCs review.
Thanks for this and it's a fair shout. The products fall in to two main categories, oily products like WD40, GT85 and ACF50 that will tend to 'wash off' relatively quickly and 'waxy' products like the TC200 and the XCP products. You're quite right that the XCP Pro (orange can) in particular can pick up muck and grit but this is reduced if you apply it and let it go 'off' for a while before using the bike. Ultimately it's great to have all this choice just be mindful of the differences in the various products.
@@BikingChap Thanks. Will give another go with XCP Pro, leaving 24 hours to "go off".
@@julesw4037 give it a go and let us know if it makes any difference.
Wow 47k views 🎉
Thanks for all your support! :)
The ONLY reason I'd ever do a PCP would be for getting a year-round commuter scooter/bike. Contrary to popular belief Honda finance & the dealer CAN'T demand more money at the end of the term if the bike is not in as good a condition as they'd like... provided you've taken reasonable care of it & haven't damaged or abused it. If I were to get a bike on PCP & wash it weekly then that's good enough. There's NO requirement to baby it with ACF50 or any other anti-rust treatments. You wouldn't be expected to do this on a car & a motorcycle is no different in terms of the contract & the law. A court would simply acknowledge that a bike used through winter will suffer greater tarnishing & rust compared to a summer Sunday toy one. Honda & their dealers are looking out for their own pockets. Personally I've always ridden Hondas (over 19 years now) but find their dealers to be incompetent (sometimes dangerously) & lazy. I do my own maintenance & haven't paid a penny to a Honda service dept for the past 11-12 years now. When buying new I shop online for the best deal across the UK & buy it via a distance sale. Other than that I aim to have zero interaction with them. Honda: Great bikes, lousy dealers.
Hi, thanks for the info, I wasn't aware that the dealers couldn't demand more as long as you'd shown reasonable care. I'm very fortunate in my local dealer as they've always been fair to deal with and competent at servicing without being extortionate, others in the area have been pretty average at best. When I've been buying Yamahas previously I used to buy all around the country and saw the ride home as a mini road trip and probably saved thousands over the years.
I'm in central Scotland & bike dealers here cater very much to the low mileage 'hobby' riders & definitely not to those who use their bikes as serious transport. They're not good IMHO. I've had much better service buying from dealers across England though I can't comment on their servicing as I haven't used them for that. I see you're based in E Sussex. In 4 years time I'll be retiring & moving to the south coast. Looking forward to a longer riding season in the milder climate. Lived in London 24 years ago & the climate makes such a difference to riding! ☀️🌴😎👍
@@andrewhamilton8954 I'm sorry to hear the dealers in Scotland are not great. I'm lucky being on the south coast, the traffic is horrendous but the weather is mild and the biking season extended. Best of all I'm near Newhaven and only 2 hours from Dover so for escaping the UK and finding more biking friendly folk, it's only a stones throw away. I hope the retirement planning goes well and if you need any advice as to towns to look at or those to avoid, certainly in this area, just shout. All the best.
Eastbourne is somewhere I'm considering. It used to be nice but I've not been for 15-20 years & I keep meaning to visit to see if it's retained that or if it's gone downhill like many other coastal towns in the UK. Certainly, looking on Streetview, I couldn't help but notice a group of 'new arrivals' congregating on the wall & steps out front of one hotel & wondered if there's a lot of them in the town now. Is it still nice? What are the nice / not so nice towns along that E Sussex to Kent stretch these days? Emigration is another possibility for me.
@andrewhamilton8954 I think Eastbourne is not as nice as it used to be but that's the same anywhere really. On the plus side it has had a new / revamped town centre in recent years including a multiplex cinema. One area has it's poverty issues, centred around Pevensey Rd but there's a good mix in the town with some stunning property in roads like Prideaux Rd. From West to East, Brighton is a bustling city with all the pros and cons that brings, very expensive property wise. You then get the coastal villages / towns of Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Peacehaven and Newhaven, basically getting less attractive as you head East. Newhaven is handy of course if you want to head over to France. A little further you have Seaford which i like. Smaller than Eastbourne but with some lovely property, a decent high street for a small town and train station to Lewes then London etc. Beyond that is Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay (Honda Dealer) and then Bexhill (Triumph Dealer). Bexhill is really quite run down but probably the cheapest area on the East Sussex coast. Next door is Hastings and that's similar in size to Eastbourne but I'd say significantly rougher, a lot of regen money has gone in to in recent times but i believe it remains one of the more deprived towns in East Sussex. Beyond that and near the border with Kent is Rye / Rye Harbour. A lovely, thriving little village but not cheap and busy, near the glorious Camber Sands. It very much depends on your preferences / budget but the coastal villages just east of Brighton are great if you want a village but easy access to the city. If you want a bigger town but not a full blown city Eastbourne would be the obvious choice. Seaford is great for it's property, seafront and trainline and Rye is you preferred a cute fishing village etc. As for emigrating I'd head straight for the south of France but no longer an option for me. I hope that helps in some way and just shout if you're ever down this way, good luck!
I am most likely going to be looking for one of these next year. The 2018-2020 model is the style I like best. Especially the 2019 because of the blue color. I also want the DCT on it. I am currently riding a Suzuki DR650. I mainly ride in town, but also some in the nearby countryside. Never go offroad anymore so don't need the dualsport capability. I took a look at the used market but don't see hardly any for sale around me here in Ohio. Hopefully some will pop up next year.
Hi, thanks for dropping by, I agree that these are the best years unless you really wanted the lower stance of the more recent bikes. I'm not sure how many they've sold in the US but from what I hear folk like them, which probably explains why you might not see many coming up for sale. I hope all is well for you guys in Ohio and you find a good NC soon. All the best, Jon.
Next time you do this test again can you include Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 Anti-Corrosion Wax (750ml) and Bilt Hamber Dynax UC Clear Film Anti-Corrosion Wax 750ml please.
Hi, I'm planning to do another version shortly and sure, if I can find those products in the UK, I'll look to include them. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!
@@BikingChap Thank you
Yes please!
Great, I'll add you to the list!
Can you tell me are the tyres tube or tubeless .thanks
HI, yes of course, they're tubeless tyres on the NC.
Great video thanks! I've heard that the xcp rust blocker is sticky - picking up road dirt which is difficult to wash off. Is that true in your experience?
Hi, thanks for the kind words. The all do in varying degrees. The XCP pro stuff, especially the orange can, leaves more like a thin wax than an oily film so sure if you use it in a place when it’s getting hit with lots of road dirt when you’ve just applied it, it will pick up a lot of muck. That said the others will tend not to be so bad because, frankly, they tend to rinse off relatively quickly.
I bought a 3 year old 17 plate with a thousand miles on for a ridiculously cheep price from a private buyer who didn’t like it . I had test ridden a manual adventure sport and really liked it. The one I bought was a dct. I thought that it was an even better deal as the dct was over a £1000 more new. I kept the bike for 2 years and in my personal opinion I really didn’t like the bike I absolutely hated the dct gearbox I found the bike was top heavy and a real pain to get in and out of the garage this actually put me off riding it . And I ain’t no wimp I’m 6” 2’ and 17 stone and work on the roads for a living. My previous bike a cb500x which I had for 6 months I did 5000 miles on. The Africa twin I did 2500 miles in two years. When I decided to get shot of it I was extremely lucky and due to the Covid scamdemic there was a bike shortage and a Honda main dealer offered to buy it off me for more than I paid for it. I bought another cb500x a newer but used 20 plate with a 100 miles on with every accessory you can imagine for £ 500 less than the new 2022 model that at the time was a 6 month waiting list due to Covid. I’ve had it now for 3 years and many miles. It’s time for a change and I’m looking at a mid range adv. I’ve tested a transalp and I’m trying a v storm 800de on Friday. I won’t buy a new one it will be used with accessories as I’ve only ever bought 1 new bike and will never do it again as the first hit of depreciation is something someone else can bare so many people buy new bikes spec them up to the max don’t use them then sell them cheap.
Hello mate. have a 2023 pcx and have been trying to learn how to do things like this on it. please do more vids like this on the pcx since i cant find any good videos of new pcx’s in the uk 👍👍👍
Hi, just about to start doing a few more how to's, what sort of thing would be useful to you?
@@BikingChap just casual at home maintenance for the bike would be great. things like oil changes, how to replace battery, spark plug. and removing and replacing the drive belt and variator would be awesome. been a bicycle mechanic for yonks and used to work on cars so am trying to get comfortable with working on my own motorcycle aswell. this video was a perfect break down and step by step guide so was very useful for me. Thanks dude. sorry it took so long to reply i don’t check youtube comments often 👍👍👍
Why didn't you test a waxoil product? Just the same products as the Bennet's guy tested.
Hi, my budget was a little limited, I don't have the financial backing that Bennetts do I'm afraid, so I tried to pick a representative group of products that covered most bases and the popular choices in the UK. That said the commonly found Waxoyl product we have here is quite a heavy wax (compared to the heaviest I test) and while that would make it a top choice for swing arms and frames it would probably be a bit unsightly for more obvious areas let alone engines etc. I personally used the black version on a black swing arm to good effect and it was barely visible. Hope that helps.
@@BikingChap I'm in the UK too. I'm definitely going with XCP since it's so much better than the others tested. But I'm interested in how the Jenolite brand stacks up against XCP as they have a very big range too, and also Tetroseal Waxoil which is proper stuff and commonly found.
@@Riggy2201 Hi, thanks for reaching out. I'm interested too and am looking to do another test this year and will look to include some more of these products, stay tuned!
P.S. I agree with you, while I like the look of the PCX, the Nmax is a better looking scooter for me too.
Yep, the NMAX looks smart. The Honda you buy in spite of it's looks, not because of them lol.
I chose pcx coz this scooter has a large storage under seat in n-max you don't have enough place for bigger helmet, for me it's ridiculous, advantage for n-max is full abs system,in pcx I like naked handlebars like in classic motors ❤and I really enjoyed turn's indicators on control panel, very visible, also in pcx I dislike short windshield, poor protection from wind and bugs 😂😂😂I need to buy different one,it help in rainy, cold day as usually in UK😂
@@BikingChaphello I buy honda pcx 2022 can you tell me what rear rack you use for delivery box,I need the same setup 😂
@@Muflinn There's a taller windshield from Honda that looks much better and gives great weather protection. I do wish the PCX had a rear disk so it could have ABS front and back but find the rear brake very predictable in the wet. The storage space is great though isn't it? :)
@@Muflinn this is the rack: tinyurl.com/ye2ax46v and this is the generic box: tinyurl.com/4kzn3pp6 I hope this helps :)
Fantastic review. Thank you. Did you consider the Yamaha Nmax at any point? I've heard it fits taller riders a bit better (I'm also 6'2). It's reportedly got better brakes as well, but the panels are thin and flimsy and overall build quality does not seem to match the Honda I've heard. But they say the engine is great and it's faster than the Honda. I was leaning towards the Nmax purely for the height concerns but if the PCX is fine for us at 6'2, then I think the Honda is better. Forza 125 and Xmax would obviously be ideal but they're much much pricier.
Thanks very much for the kind comments :) It's very much personal preference. Performance wise I think it's had to split them but perhaps pulling away from a stop, around town say, the NMAX has a slight edge. What finally put me off the NMAX was that I heard a few people had worn pistons / barrels at relatively low miles and even a local delivery guy had a 2 year old NMAX that left a trail of smoke and sounded terrible. I could find no such horror stories with the PCX. In short if I was going to do lowish miles and sell once the warranty ran out I might have gone for the Yamaha but I wanted the scoot for a long time so went for the Honda, good luck and thanks!
@@BikingChap I did not know about any of that, time for some more digging hehe. Thank you again for the thorough reply. All the best!
@@BikingChap Looking the subject up, I've just seen a video of a South Korean mechanic changing the piston and cylinder of a 2020 Nmax 125: ua-cam.com/video/41soMRYKh-0/v-deo.html No idea about the bike in question's history but there does seem to be some truth to what you've said. And it is a lot of work to replace those parts.
@@marcellocapone4925 yes and I did contact the guy and, from memory, it had only done low 20k miles.
Nice bike. Add cruise control and it's very good bike.
Very much personal preference but I'd go for the updated suspension and brakes off the later CB500X before cruise control but I know many folk really find cruise useful.
Thank you for the prompt reply. I appreciate your unbiased approach. About me, I own a 2019 Africa Twin (Standard). I purchased her brand new from a dealer in 2021. I am particularly concerned about the quality of the switchgear and the ignition switch. I don’t seem to have problems with any of the aforementioned components, however, I intend on taking a proactive approach. Currently, I’m in the information gathering phase. My primary focal point is my ignition switch as I have heard that internal corrosion is an eventuality. I’m exploring the possibility of using a spray on electrical cleaner followed by a lubricant. I’m hoping that periodically spraying a generous amount of both into the keyhole will do the trick. Regarding the switch gear. I’m thinking that I can open both the left and right handlebar units up and perform the same electrical cleaning and lubrication but from the inside. I’m hoping that doing so yearly as part of regular maintenance will do the trick. I’m curious about your thoughts.
Thanks for reaching out. I know the switch gear, especially on the left side, can have issues where replacement was required but without researching I'm not sure what the reason for failure was. With regard to the ignition switch, firstly they're a lot cheaper to replace but better still you can invariably take them apart and restore / clean them. I had to do this on a previous Honda project and I bought some plastic grease, some contact cleaner / lubricant (Servisol Super 10), and some 'brasso' to clean the contacts. It took a little while to pull apart and put back together and I needed a 'security' screwdriver, but it's still faultless years later. Hope this helps :)
Very comprehensive review. Not sure if I missed it, but do you actually own this bike?
Hi John, no this is one i hired for the review. Unlike most reviewers who have deals with dealers / manufacturers to get access to the latest bikes I rent the bikes i review (apart from the odd one I've owned for many years like the NC) This way you can be sure my take is completely straight and not influenced by a need to keep the dealers / manufacturers happy.
Please do an updated video with Bilt Hamber included, everyone is saying they're best
Hi thanks for this, I'm planning a new 2024 test and will look to include at least one Bilt Hamber product if available in the UK, thanks for the tip!
Watching this after applying xcp rust blocker (orange can) on my car. Cost me RM120 per can / bottle 😵💫. Hope it is cost effective in the long run.
I don't think you'll be disappointed, let me know how you get on!
Which grade oil you used
Currently Honda's own 10w30 :)
Which engine you used I have same model . Which grade oil is good
Honda advise a 10w30, so I stick with that. :)
Hi sir i would like to know that can i use any 50 scooter oil for 125 scooter.
Hi, Honda specify a 10W30 oil for the PCX, which scooter do you have?
@@BikingChapis 10w30 oil good for cold water and hot water in a honda pcx 125 2018 model
Spot on, yes!
what in your opinion is the best 125 scooter
I'm always wary of 'best bike' recommendations because everyone has different priorities. I went for the PCX because I wanted more power than the Vision 110 and Honda reliability but didn't want to spend Forza 125 money. What were your priorities for your new bike?
Yes please!
Added to my list my friend! :)
Yes, I’d like one too. Thanks for doing the experiment, very informative.

Excellent, consider it done! Update coming soon!
First of all hello Sir and thanks alot for your video . I am from Viet nam , and i am doing a detailing job . The people in my country use motorbike alot , i am also looking for a product like this to sharing that with my customers. But at here we just have a few distributor , one of that is LPS 3 Premier Rust inhibitor , that looks like XCP professional rust blocker . A thin wax oil can prevent the rust . Could you help me out a hand by sharing your thinking about that LPS 3 . And after applying the rust inhibitor , how we can keep it as long as possible . We wash the bike at here normally 3 or 4 times a month , my english is not so good so please forgive me if i say anything wrong , have a great day Sir.
Sir, thanks for reaching out and you're English is great, don't worry! I found that the products that set like a wax, rather than an oily film, were far more long lasting. I don't know the weather in Vietnam but if the humidity is often high then a more waxy product like this will probably last well. I hope you have a great day, best wishes!
Loved the video. Unfortunately the AT is too tall for me.. I’ll stick to the NC. Subscribed.
@@adildewji as I’ve got older I’ve found some of the really tall bikes off putting too. Nothing wrong with the NC, there’s nothing else quite like it. 👍Thanks for the sub!
I am so tempted to change one of my bikes for the NC750. Choosing between the manual and automatic version is more difficult than it may first appear. I like the engaging experience of a manual gearbox but I can't deny that DCT makes a lot of sense in urban areas. One thing that happened to a friend of mine who opted for the DCT is that he was moving the bike on foot while switched on and inadvertently gave it some throttle. His first reaction was to hang on to it in an attempt to control it ... big mistake! It just dragged him along with it and into a parked car. I guess there are times when you need the bike to stall. Great video!
@@Censuwine thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. Sales have been split pretty evenly from what I’ve seen but the manual and DCT are very different beasts. It’s a very personal decision rather than one being ‘better’ than the other. Good luck!
Nice review of an interesting bike. Unfortunately it is difficult to judge the drive limitations with regard to the rider posture . Nobody talks about that on internet. Are there any NC750 riders out there taller than 1.90m? What is their comfort experience? Any (serious) adjustment done with leveling up the seat? What is the max seat height realistically achievable with after market gear? Thx for your thoughts. Ron
Hi Ron, thanks for the feedback. I'm around 1.9m and I'll be honest I didn't ever feel naturally comfortable on the NC, let me explain. I quickly found I was getting pain in my hips and while I could never be certain as to the cause I think it was a mixture of the slightly cramped peg to seat distance and that the seat rolled your hips forward. The bars, for me at any rate, were fine. What I think I would try is to lower the pegs and to adjust out the slope of the seat (along with some more padding). It wasn't the most uncomfortable bike I've had but it was certainly the only one to give me hip pain problems. I hope this help at least explain my experience. All the best, Jon.
@@BikingChap Thx Jon, very helpful. 👍

No one ever talks about how changing your exhaust could have major reduction in fuel economy. It’s been my experience over the years.
Hi Roger, that’s a really good point and, hands up, I didn’t check it. I have to say that because many modern bikes have a cat AND an initial silencer under the engine (the NC only has a cat) the rear can is often mainly for aesthetics and removing doesn’t make them massively louder, an MT-10 being a classic case. On these bikes I don’t believe just change the rest can will make much difference to sound, performance or economy. Where people replace the cat or cat a pre silencer then, performance can improve but absolutely fuel economy can take a tumble.
I am not sure about that. Fuel average after 10.000km with original exhaust, 4.1l/100km. Fuel Average after 6000km with Leo Vinci Oval, 4.1l/100km.
@@BikingChapVery good point indeed. Thank you!
