    Disappointing result for ACF50!

Absolutely, to the extent that I looked back at the original uncut footage of when I applied it in the beginning to check I hadn’t done something daft but all looked ok. Results this far do broadly align with the video bike social did a while back though the new Muc Off product wasn’t out then.

Thanks for the video update......like other commenters I am surprised but looks like the muc off and XCP in real world situatons...out of interest and I cant remember..... what "treatment "if any did the test rig stand have? they look no worse than some of the other test pieces?

Thanks Adam, that’s the slightly odd thing, the stand offs were just off cuts from the others bits of steel. The only ‘treatment’ they got was a clean with some solvent to clean off any transport / protection oil film that might have been put on during production. You’re right though they seem no worse than those that had WD / FS365 etc which suggests there’s either something Ive overlooked or the protection of those products is next to zero. Looking back the first of the treated pieces did show signs of rust after three days so it might well be they only offered 48-72 hours protection and after 6 weeks I guess it’s hard to see the difference between steel that’s corroded for 6 weeks and steel that’s corroded for 5 weeks and 4 days if that makes sense.

Excellent info! I'm a strong advocate of ACF50. Like you I live by the sea, within yards of high tide. BUT....I've always hosed my bike down after winter rides (I ride almost every day) and I thoroughly wash and re apply every two weeks. It's a faff but it works for me. I'm very impressed with the top two performing products but I wonder how they'd cope with high temperature environments like the engine block etc. I'd also be concerned that I couldn't monitor what was happening under the road filth that could accumulate and stick to the waxy finish.
Having said all that, this experiment shows that if regular winter washing and reapplication arent your thing then ACF50 isn't a perfect solution. Perhaps a combination of products would work for me. Time for a re think of my strategy possibly.
    Thanks for all the effort.

Hi Keith, thanks for dropping by :) From what I’ve seen so far any but the worst three would protect if your regime is a thorough wash and reapply every 2 weeks.
It’s an interesting point re the heat issue, and I might do a mini test on that to see if the waxes are more likely to melt and ‘run off’, leave that with me.
The tackiness is another interesting issue. All bar the standard XCP have attracted quite a lot of muck but the XCP is different. You can easily see through it to the surface below but at the same time there’s virtually no muck stuck to it. It’s certainly not like an under seal which I always think do more harm than good. It’ll be interesting to how they all progress as we go in to the really heavily salt spray laden weeks and months ahead!

How'd I know the one on the far left was going to be the WD-40 💀

WD40 is a great product but it's certainly not much use as a rust prevention spray! That said, and I've just looked at them now, the ACF50 hasn't faired much better now we've been through a winter! Will do a revisit video this month...

Hi Carl, they vary all the time of course but currently a quick Google shows: XCP Profession Rust Blocker - £14.50 for a 400ml aerosol, Muc-Off HCB-1 - £16.00 for a 400ml aerosol and TecCote TCS TC200 - £10.75 for a 400ml aerosol. Hope that helps :)

Very shocked by the poor performance results from the three mainstream big brands, I definitely won’t be wasting anymore money on them. But It’s definitely worth going the extra mile to find the Muc-off & XCP products even if it means buying online. Superb experiment BC & very well done.

Thanks John, appreciated! In fairness WD40 never pretends to be a rust prevention spray and FS365 does seem to suggest reapplying 'after every ride' which would get pretty expensive. It's the ACF50 that has surprised me though. It's what I've used for ages and was suspicious of other tests that seemed to suggest it wasn't as good as everyone thought. The best products are much more like a thin 'waxoyl' type product than a oily spray though so perhaps the products available have just changed in recent years. The better of the XCP products looks amazing thus far and is the one to watch I think, i wonder how long it will last... Spread the word! :)

Great stuff and proof that it’s very easy to buy products which clearly don’t work as the manufacturers claim and to be frank it’s really annoying when you buy something for a specific job and it clearly doesn’t work! 😡 top marks to you for making the effort with this test, you potentially have saved a lot of people money! 👏👏👏😀👍

Thanks for that. I'll put my cards on the table, I've used and even defended ACF50 on many occasions but not now I've actually tested them back to back. In fairness they fall in to three group imho, the light oils, like WD40. The heavier oils like ACF50 and then the wax like products. It's these last ones that are showing the benefit, the oily products simply wash off and in apparently quite a short timeframe.
