GP14 Keel Band Re-sealing | Skismo had a leak
I was getting a lot of water into the bow buoyancy tank after each sail. After determining where it must be coming from I set about fixing it. I removed the front keel section of keel band, assessed the fixing holes, cleaned it all up and re-fixed the keel band, sealing the fixing holes in the process. It was a success, now no water gets in no matter how long the boat is on the water.

Good video of galley box use and FODMAP cooking. Here in Oz you can bu ready-made FODMAP meals in pouches that dont need refrigeration. Soups, butter chicken etc etc.
@@DWilks-fo1ze That would be very helpful here, I’m not sure we’re that far forward with FODMAP options. Thanks for watching 🤓
what wind strenght when using B-rig?
Hi, If I remember correctly about 15 to 20 mph winds for the B rig.
Very useful series of videos for a new sailor like me. Thanks. 👍
Glad you like them, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 😊
Are you sailing here with just your headsail?

Another great video...stunning footage...brown sea island looked amazing.....👍👍
@@christeague7596 Thank you, yes, Poole is a great and beautiful place to sail.
My solution, I'm using 2 Li-ion battery 14500 in place of two AA batterie and for the others places one is occuped by 2 serial diodes 1N4004 or equivalent placed in a cylinder with same sise of à AA batterie and the other one is a short circuit also placed in a cylinde size AA. The final voltage max is 8.4V - 1.6V = 6.8V and when the Li-ion are fully discharged 6V - 1.6 = 4.4V.... Very simple !
Thank you
Hallo i have problems with water in the boat i dont now where it comes maybe you nhow some kind of problems with this boat water lekkage greetings
Hi. The water can get in in a few likely places. The deck eyes if not glued in, the deck hatch if not taped properly, the rudder gaiter or the rear bung. If all of those are good then the next likely place is around the keel box, they are prone to cracking there, especially if the keel has been strained or knocked.
Hallo. What for battery are you using in thee boat thank you
@@salvatorealessandrino945 Hi I use batteries from RC Yachts website www.radiosailing.co.uk/vapex-life-balanced--batterycharger-system-197-c.asp
Thank you for your excellent vidio I hope to get a tent fitted to my 17 ft half Decker so I can sail further and stay overnight. The way you organised and stored the hear gave me some good tips. Enjoy your sailing next summer. That boat of yours really is fast.😊

Love your content. If you ever get stuck without a tin opener again. Any sturdy knife like the one you keep on Skismo can easily pierce the lid of any tin. can cut a hole out just like a can opener.

Is there information somewhere regarding where there is free or cheap launching locations for a GP14 that you tow yourself, and where you can leave your trailer while you sail. It is one thing being a fixed club member and being nailed to the floor, and something very free to be able to drive to a UK location and just take off like you do. It would be nice to be able to break out of the sailing club and be a free agent. How do you know and find these locations and what trailer security do you need ?
That's a good question, and one that is being addressed nationally (and slowly) right now. There is a distinct lack of information regarding this currently. The RYA had dinghy trails but they are being re-vamped so not available online currently. 'Free' is the difficult bit in this country (UK), but there are still some reasonably priced locations you can park your car and trailer while you go off for a day's sail. "The Good Launch Guide" by Geoffrey Campbell is a 20 year old book but is a good starting point even if most of the information is out of date. Then there's the DCA's Facebook page (Dinghy Cruising Association) - This is probably the best resource because its members cover the entire country and the information they will give is current and relevant. The other thing you can try is to contact sailing clubs that are at the coastal venue where you want to sail and ask if a temporary day membership is a possibility. Joining the DCA is beneficial too and if you are in travelling distance from the South Coast then you can't go wrong by joining the Cody Sailing Club either.
@@sailingskismo Thanks for the information. I am in the North East (Yorkshire) and there only seems to be reservoir clubs (almost like golf clubs if you catch my drift) , which is not very interesting.
All these tips are excellent, yet still does not overcomplicate the way the boat is set up. The roller for the foresail is really interesting and must make life easier , as do the side stirrups for getting back in on the rare occasion it may capsize. These old GP14 boats are really good to buy and tailor exactly as you want them without breaking the bank. Thanks for all the tips. I wonder if you could maybe do a video with advice on the requirements for the launch trolley and trailer, particularly for the GRP hull, which I think needs good broad support?
Hi and thanks for watching, much appreciated. I’m glad the video was helpful. The trailer requirements is a great suggestion, one I hadn’t thought of. I shall add it to my list.
Really love your boat where are you exactly
Thanks, I love my boat too! 🤓 I’m based in the SW of the UK
Thanks for the video. Very tranquil and relaxing footage. I’m looking forward to checking out some of your other videos. Cheers Chris @small sailboat cruising.
@@SmallSailboatCruising Thank you Chris, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy some of the other content. :)
There were many many more people living in Norfolk in the past. The black death led to the demise of entire villages. Then the opening up of the American prairies collapsed the price Norfolk farmers could get for their grain. Consequently there are many abandoned churches standing in groves of trees in wheat fields. I remember climbing the belfry of one such church in the late 1960s.
The soot produced by a spirit stove can be eradicated by diluting the meths with 5% water. Trangia actually print that advice on the instructions stuck to the pan.
I'm not really sure I want to know, but a "bivvy loo"?
Ha!, probably best if I just send a link to one 😊 amzn.eu/d/cV3rlLb
@@sailingskismo ooh er! Thanks. I use my rugged hard rubber bucket for that! I don't suppose chucking anything over board is really acceptable in fresh water conditions!
Dude that’s a great idea
Thanks! :) - And it has proved to be very successful, I've used it lots of times now. Thanks for watching.
The problem with keel bands, is the differing expansion and contraction between the band and boat. I believe none of the screws should go through to the interior of the boat, as the expansion will always loosen the screws over time and cause leaks.
Awesome galley box , what the dimensions
Hi, thank you, yes, it gets a lot of use. The dimension of the box is W400xD250xH325mm The lid is slightly larger with dimensions of W420XD270
Thanx for that,,just made one😊
Nice easy fix. My series one has a broken rib between the centreboard case and the stern. I think the trailer broke it as snapped in the same place on each side. I have to get off my ass to pull it out and replace it, but I have been (understandably) dragging my feet on the project.
Thanks for watching :) I also have a wooden GP14 which sometimes ago I had to take the centreboard casing out to deal with rot at the bottom. I’ve been dragging my feet with that task for about 10 years!
What a beautiful little video....really enjoyed it.....more....more...please
Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching:)
You could have drilled another hole to let the water back out 🫣
Think I would have taken a different approach. I would have drilled out to 10mm and filled with thickened epoxy. Then screw into that.
I very well may end up doing that with the one where I used a bolt. With the other holes I tested for 'grip' with new stainless screws beforehand so I knew I could get a good purchase when I screwed the keel band back on. :)
How long should the oars be on a GP 14
Good question and you will get many answers! The obvious observation is that if they are too short they will not function properly. If they are too long you will have harder 'purchase' on the water and they will take up more space both inside and outside the boat. Mine are just shy of 8 foot long and performance wise I would like them to be 8 foot. However, they do function well but they also fit nicely inside the boat without being 'in the way'. If they were any longer they would be 'in the way' for me and my set up. I use them also to skull and for that I wish they were 6 inch longer. So, in a wafflleish way of answering (or not) your question, approximately 8 foot, but then a bit shorter or a bit longer would also work. The longer they are the harder they will be to pull through the water though because the fulcrum will always be in the same place. The amount of oar inside the boat (from the rowlocks to just short of centreline) will always be the same (because thats where your hands will be! )
Thanks for the post!
Thanks for watching :)
Thanks very much for sharing ⛵️
