8 Days on a dinghy | Part Two | Loch Oich and Loch Ness
This is the second instalment of my 8 days on a dinghy adventure in the Scottish Highlands. Part one covers the first 4 days, this video covers the last 4 days. Rowing from Laggan Locks to Loch Oich, sailed Loch Oich then rowed more canal to Fort Augustus. Loch Ness was sailed over two days nd then Dochgarroch to Inverness on the last day. For little old me in little old Skismo this was a bucket-list adventure.

    Thats a lovley trip for a dinghy. Cheers for the video and inspiration. I'm currenlty trying to come up with Tent MK2 for my Lugger and will take a little bit of inspiration from this! One quick question. Can you right the GP14 with all that kit in or do you intend on never capsizing?

    • @sailingskismo
      @sailingskismo 2 дні тому

      @@SailingWithDave Thanks Dave, well, like yours, I have built-in buoyancy tanks down each side of the boat and that keeps the boat mostly out of the water if I’m on my side. The dry bags of sleeping stuff and clothes offer a bit of buoyancy too. That said, all that extra gear in the bottom of the boat also offers a bit more stability. I’ve never capsized with all that gear in but I’m more than confident that if I did I would be able to right it. It’s been 3 years since I last capsized and I had a fair amount of gear in the boat then and I ended up doing a dry capsize ( in front of King Harry Ferry in Falmouth! ) I did lose my paper chart and my favourite sandwich box.

    Finally getting round to set up something similar on my GP14 - how do you attach cleats, fairleads to the boom and the mast? I'm debating between rivets and tapping. Another question, is there any benefit using a cam cleat instead of clamcleat for the reefing line?

    • @sailingskismo
      @sailingskismo Місяць тому

      Hi, I use rivets to attach things to the boom, primarily because it is a quick way to do so. Also, the rivets are the same metal as the boom so less risk of galvanic corrosion. Nothing wrong with tapping and using threadlock but do use marine grade screws otherwise they will rust and weaken. As far as cleats go: I prefer cam cleats on warps under a lot of strain, I’ve used clam cleats in the past and they have failed to hold in heavy conditions. That may have been down to how I had the warp running into them or maybe a slight mismatch of size. If I ever get around to it, I will run my reef lines inside the boom to tidy it all up a bit.

      Hi, it’s a Typhoon, breathable with closed feet and neoprene cuffs and collar. I would be wary of getting one with closed feet though ( same material as the rest of the suit ) as mine seeps through already and it isn’t that old. If I were buying new now, I would go for built-in boots or stick with built-in latex socks. My previous typhoon dry suit was amazing, lasted me 20 years! This one however, I feel won’t match up to that.

      Hi Christian, thank you for watching. I do use my Genoa, if there are times I don’t use it it is probably because I’ve got the camera pointing forwards and don’t want to block the view. I made the boom tent ( that was a learning curve! ) and my bed is an off-the-shelf camp bed, slightly modified to fit the boat. There is another video all about the bed and how I made it fit. 🤓

    I am actually near this bay in June with my boat. How does one go about launching from the various little ports? I'm going to be on the north west side.

      I'm afraid I can't really answer that. Our boats were moored on the pontoon of Arradon's marina all week, we sailed out and back in everyday. Amazing place though, so many places to explore, you will love it! Maybe some Brittany-based DCA members can help you?

    Stop!!! , I sail my Dragon Force and Dragon Fly in salt water a lot. If you do not apply Corrosion X and Reel X grease to your mast step bearings they will completely rust. Start out right if you’re sailing in salt water! I’m in the process of replacing all my mast foot assembly because of this
