  • My headsail suffered some creasing while packed (badly) in its bag. The creases were quite bad and even in high winds they kept their shape. So it was time to try and get rid of them. I used an RC plane film iron ( I know it is unlikely that anyone has one of these but they are not expensive and are ideal for the job )

Thanks for demonstrating this. I’ve been disappointed to crease my new sails.

Thanks for watching 😊 I’m sure most sails at some point will get creased, unless you’re meticulously careful when transporting and stowing them. Mine was in a sail bag and it still happened.

These sails are made from POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE. The surface melting point is over 200C°.
So you don't have to be afraid to iron at 150C°

Interesting suggestion, I have an iron so could easily try it. Do you have any sense of what might happen if overdone, will it shrink or expand ?

At just over 140’ it ‘felt’ to me like the mylar would withstand quite a bit more heat. I believe its melting point is over 200’ ( tbc ). I would imagine that scorching it with too much heat would cause hardening of the material and melting through completely if prolonged. Fortunately, I haven’t tested it to destruction ( yet ).

Could I ask the make and model of the iron used. I have a DF65 sails with same issue. Thanks.

Hi, and thanks for watching :) - I believe it's a Turnigy custom sealing iron. 240v, 165W. Don't overheat your sails, take your time. Overheating the sails will cause the material to soften and they will lose their rigidity. I had mine at approx 80% power.

I thought the joysway sails were made from Mylar?
