Midicake has a goal to enable performers and producers to add complex and repeatable layers to compositions with minimal real-time input.
To create midi sequence generators that synchronize with other sequencers and track with changes as a performance evolves.

1 Hour Improvisation with Eurorack Modular Synths
An hour long, unplanned improv session with Midicake ARP and a very limited Eurorack setup.
Consisting of just 4 synths: 2hp Kick, 2hp Pluck, Knobula Pianophonic, Knobula Polycinematic. The Specular Tempus is providing reverb.
It's surprising just what variation you can get with this small setup. The sound is recorded as is with no post editing. I hope you enjoy!

Question: what is the vst (or software) used to create the multicolored midi note pattern in the background?
@@docjoesweeney MIDI Visualizer.github.com/kosua20/MIDIVisualizer It's a good thing.
@@midicakemidi thanks!
What synth did you use in this?
Little late in seeing this, but, what synth are you using with ARP in this video?
I had to dig through the archives to find out. I used 3 instances of Massive for this in Ableton. Build from the following 3 presets (Gamma State, Cruithne's Orbit, Clean2Hiss). There's a fairly huge amount of reverb on each track. The drums are an 808.
chop off the top third. rotate to landscape. draw on the back of your hand/thumb. This I want to see.... NB sounds good though
How much? The website won't tell me
£320 GBP + shipping and taxes. This is shown on the individual product page where there is also a total price calculator that allows you to choose your destination country for an estimated total price. Hope that helps. .
Interesting device! But why does the displayed tempo keep changing from around 6:18 to 6:30 ?
It's just a rounding issue... ARP is receiving MIDI Clock from Seqtrak and digital clock timing (particularly over USB) is notoriously prone to single-tick latency because it's at the mercy of microprocessors that are busy doing lots of other work. (I've talked about this in the past on our forum). It's too fast to detect in the audio with human ears. The latency is usually less than 1 millisecond. However, because ARP calculates the tempo based on the timing between the ticks, even tiny changes, in the gap between ticks, can result in different tempos being calculated for the display. For example, at 138bpm each clock tick is only 18ms apart, so a 1ms latency equates to a 5% variance. Even with ARP's smoothing algorithm, which samples the last n ticks, the issue is very apparent at certain tempo timings. You'll see this occur on many digital devices that detect tempo from an external clock. It's nothing to worry about as the tempo calculation is only for the display. ARP triggers its note output on the clock tick (not the calculated tempo), so if one tick is slightly late, the next will be on time and the music rolls on. I hope that answers your question and if anyone knows of a better solution to tempo detection I'd be very interested. :)
@@midicakemidi Thanks for the very detailed reply! That makes sense, I didn't realise at first that it was the seqtrak and not your ARP that was the midi clock source. I'm surprised there is so much jitter from the seqtrak as I would have thought a microcontroller based device like it would actually do much better than say a DAW running on an general purpose preemptive OS that is switching between hundreds of processes a second. Anyways thanks again for the quick reply 👍
What are you using for MIDI in/converter? Thanks
I use the Flame uQMCV and u16CC combo, they are small and do everything I want. MIDI Thru, Clock, 4 Note Channels and 16 CCs. There's a discussion about MIDI to CV Eurorack options on our forum... www.midicake.com/forum/general-discussion/eurorack-multi-channel-midi-to-cv
I have just started my journey in learning to live perform. Two things I’ve learned. There are no rules. Have fun. I improvise as an alternative to structure that I have to deal with in my full time job and adulting. Noise made with our toys is one of the few things in life that truly moves me. I also do this for myself. Similar to I have to love and or fix myself.
Did you consider using the J-6 chord library ? Select a chords set, use the J-6 as a MIDI controller - easy feeding of chord progressions to the ARP with single touches on the J-6's "keyboard". But would that be redundant with what the ARP offers ? (I have no idea - ARP is on my 2024 Santa Claus letter...)
@@liotier Cheers, It's a good suggestion. ARP is designed to work with any MIDI chord sequencer though its own chord engine is pretty powerful and versatile. We are working on enhancing ARP's internal chord chain sequencer too. I'll, perhaps, try to do a video on chord sequencing soon. The J-6 might feature. Thanks!
That drum midi hack is brilliant. Thanks for the idea.
Really enjoying the device. This was helpful. Thank you.

From my own point of view, recorded, music never feels the same when recorded as it did when performing it and this carries over to an audience, too. A recorded "live" performance can never sound the same as it did in the venue and this is not just mixing or acoustics or editing: personality, equipment quirks, the rest of the audience and more all play into the final experience. From this video evidence, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your improv skills - verging on 'Berlin School' at times. At one point you say that you find music improv and music production to be very different and I wonder if you are not bringing your "producer's ears" to your musician's practice... I can see how that would lead to self-doubt. An audience is there to listen (we hope) and they understand what they have come to hear and are prepared for whatever happens (well, mostly they are - I can never forgive the tw*t at a Barry Adamson gig recently who was calling loudly for the sacking of the person who'd set up Barry's microphone, which kept dropping in height: even Mr Adamson found it funny).

Very impressive session with the Arp as central sequencer tool. Daily practice with the Arp, learning to control/play your synths/plugins creates great possibilities in making music.
Top! 😎

This long overdue video illustrates how the arp can be used as a sketch pad for ideas that follow one another freely. Very liberating improv device.

Great explanations and the ARP overall is just such a magical device.
Cheers!
Interesting. But repeatability and a harmonic pattern are by no means definitive of what music can be. They describe what it usually is and how humans usually use it but in my experience there are more interesting sources of variability and creativity for exploring spontaneously arising patterns. This is seen by mind as just chaos but this is not a very interesting dialogue with sound. Repeatability is not a crucial criterion. Of course these are views and inspirations for different persons.
How to set midi out for each arp? Settings are only global
Each track has it's own set of parameters that control the sequence. In SET Mode, press the Midi Out button to set the MIDI Channel for the individual track.

Q: Groovbox Instrument on Ch10, how well is it supported for multible drums & perussion? In your tutorials, the show case is primarily shown with synthesizers.
ARP isn't primarily designed as a groove box but it can make for some very interesting result when working with percussion. This device looks awesome, but I can't afford more hardware. Would be great to have even basic VST or other software integration with Bitwig Grid
@@AnomieDomine Thanks! We've explored a VST version and while it isn't out of the question, you can't beat getting hands on. ARP is very much a musical instrument. I spent many, many years making music with a mouse and when I made the leap into hardware I didn't find the tools I wanted to work with. ARP is the result of that journey. I also wanted it to be affordable too. No more than a decent MIDI Controller.
Controlled randomness... Sounds familiar

"Approaches to music sequencing" is worthy of a PhD dissertation. Many sequencers seem to get stuck at 16 steps simply because after that the level of mechanical vibe-killing tedium sharply rises. A few break out by having a 32-step grid or dividers-multipliers and variable lanes. Arp is very unusual in that it's incredibly easy to go way beyond 16 steps. The price you pay for that is not having micro control over every note. Instead you control scales, ranges, cycles and patterns. My best analogy has Arp as a sheepdog: It efficiently guides a big flock of notes from place to place. Anyway, I'm glad we're calling it a sequencer now, maybe we can say Arp is an acronym? Arranger-Repeater-Performer :)
@@RichardDeHove This is a great description of ARP and a great analogy. This is the experience I imagined when I started work on ARP. I've often thought that using ARP is like being the conductor of an orchestra with no sheet music. You're relying on the musicians to implement your ideas. Compose and perform. 😊
@@RichardDeHove "Automate, Repeat, Play". But your acronym is better! ☺️
@@midicakemidi !!!! You mean is was an acronym all along ?! I missed it :D
Well done.
@@housedekris7530 Thank you!
For me the Arp is the right tool to create nice patterns without loosing control. With some practice you easily can make interesting beautiful live performances on multiple instruments. With a random generator it is not that much fun for me - It feels like riding kind of a bull and you can’t steer this beast. Sorry for my weak english but hopefully you know what I mean.
Thankyou for taking the time on this one. Most helpful, gradually taking it all in I must update 👍👍
Cheers! Yeah, the new Binary Patterns are a blast!
Great discussion. Very useful to those of us that understand the concepts but lack the physical ability. Also explains why I start noodling in the evening and when I look up it’s 2am. 😂
Haha, me too!
Lovely ! Do you give the TR-8 a Midicake ARP track - or do you only synchronize it to play it directly ?
Thank you! The TR-8 is only taking MIDI Clock from ARP. It is such a great drum machine for live performances in 3/4 or 4/4. If I was doing more unusual time signatures I'd have to trigger it from ARP. Another reason is that, when triggered externally, the TR-8 uses the incoming MIDI note velocity and bypasses the mutes and faders, so you can't use them. This is a shame because they are so great during a performance. I don't know if this is any different in the TR-8S.
@@midicakemidi I'm pretty certain that MIDI received by the TR-8 doesn't bypass mutes and faders: I sequence the TR-8 from my MPC One and I use its mutes and faders for live variation. I wonder if our settings differ.
@@liotier Ah, I'll look into this again because maybe I missed something. Thanks!
That was decicious. I am a very impatient person but listen to the last note, and I almost never do that!
Thank you!
Beautiful. Love your music and your writings - And your gear 🙂
