DAWLess Mini Synth JAM | J-6 & JX-08 | Volca Beats | Midicake ARP

- A friend lent me some little Roland synthesizers to try out with Midicake ARP. They are both packed with good sounds and very playable. For that Mid-80s vibe, they really shine.
I'm not that taken with the J-6 sequencer but, given its size, it still packs a lot in. Once you disable the in-built sequencers, however, driving them with ARP makes for a brilliantly compact tabletop setup!
And, of course, ARP opens up possibilities that just can't be achieved any other way. Who needs Astrolab!? ;)

I wouldn't go that far but thank you so much! 😊
You explain it very well. Chris is a wonderful artist who creates unique works. And also he combines it with a great sense of humour.
Perfect video to return to with some way of modulating synth voice.........Keep the tune etc it sounds great.
A great joy to listen to your videos. Allways amazing tunes and also some informations about electronic music, the universe, the arp and everything.
Nice sound.
Thank you!
ARP is a great tool !! Nice work my friend !! !! ✨✨👍👍
Thank you so much for the kind words and your support!
I love my midicake arp
This was very nice and enjoyable.
Thank you. ❤️
This is exactly what I try to do on my videos. But I always get tripped up with connections
I have the volca and the js-08 bit the other little Roland. Could you share you “set up?” If you have time. That is so awesome I love this
One little problem also here is: I connect about 4 devices, 2 synths and 2 controllers with the Midicake and start all devices simultaneously. Everything ist working - except the Arp: No Midi signal in or out is indicated. I restart the Arp and it works like a charm.
Do you mean regarding MIDI Channels?
J-6 on Channel 1 (SHIFT+B KEY for menu, then use the TEMPO/VALUE knob to set the CH (midi channel) to 1. Then D KEY to save and exit.)
JX-08 on Channel 3 & 4 (MENU, then BANK 3 for the Midi Menu. Then use the VALUE knob to set CH.A and CH.B to 3 & 4. MENU to exit.)
Volca Beats (Hold MEMORY when Powering On, then press the note key corresponding to the MIDI Channel, in this case 2.)
As I show in the video, I have them daisy-chained. ARP to J6, J6 to JX-08, JX-08 to Volca.
Because ARP is sending Clock and Transport (Start/Stop) messages, the sequencers on all three devices would start when pressing play on ARP. The Chord and Sequence patterns are on by default, so it is just a case of clearing the patterns (see the user manual for this).
And make sure you manually save this otherwise you'll have to do it again when you next turn them on. This is something you don't need to worry about with ARP.
@@lummsmusik3219 Does this happen every time? Or just occasionally? It could be you have a loop in the MIDI routing or perhaps there's a communication issue with ARP and a specific device you've connected. I'd be happy to take a look if you want to email me through midicake.com/contact-us
@@midicakemidi Thank you so much. I get so confounded with midi
I will have to try this. Now if I use the midi hub does that change things drastically ?

I have just noticed that BoBeats has unpacked a Midicake Arp! It starts getting exciting 🙂
Did you consider using the J-6 chord library ? Select a chords set, use the J-6 as a MIDI controller - easy feeding of chord progressions to the ARP with single touches on the J-6's "keyboard". But would that be redundant with what the ARP offers ? (I have no idea - ARP is on my 2024 Santa Claus letter...)
@@liotier Cheers, It's a good suggestion. ARP is designed to work with any MIDI chord sequencer though its own chord engine is pretty powerful and versatile. We are working on enhancing ARP's internal chord chain sequencer too.
I'll, perhaps, try to do a video on chord sequencing soon. The J-6 might feature. Thanks!
Next time I expect the drums to be Arped as well :D
The Volca has a very unusual MIDI mapping.
@@midicakemidi For sequencing drums I use the drum set of the open and multimbral Microdexed Touch DIY synth (MDT). They sound very good and are easy to control with the Arp. I consider making a video only with Arp and MDT, hopefully next time.
@@lummsmusik3219 We need more info and demos of drum programmimg on ARP - please.
@@johngilbert184On my channel you find two videos: DarkSundayCake and CakeInTheEvening in which the Arp sequences a drum channel. For tutorial videos maybe Chris does a pure drum session? 😉
