Hi there!
I'm a chemistry teacher who enjoys learning about colouring and art in general. I love how colouring lets me use my brain in ways that are so different from my daily science/math thinking - although there is a fair bit of chemistry in the science of how art materials are made! :)
I hope I can share and learn with the wonderful colouring community on UA-cam!
Keep calm and colour on! :)

As a newbie, this is very helpful to see!
this video is way, WAY too rambly. even with the intro skip. please just get to the point.
Thanks for your feedback! There are so many wonderful UA-cam colouring channels out there - I'm sure you can find one with content that better appeals to you. All the best!
Hello Coloring Chemist, I realize I'm going to ask you a question that you did a video on it about 6 months ago - trying bout different coloring book papers using Kuretake Zig Clean Color brush pens. I am sport I didn't see that video until today, Nov 21, 2024. My question is about trying out Zig clean color brush pens in Tuttle published coloring books. They are very well made, beautiful art work, the line work page is a copy of Japanese wood block prints created between 1700's to mid 1900's. They are about 9" x 12" and the inside paper is thick and smooth. The titles are: Beautiful Women; In A Japanese Garden; Floating World; The Colours of Asia; Meditations On Tea; and A Touch of Asia. All originally published between 2016 & 2017. The books are beautiful just as they are, each color print of original painting is opposite the black line design of same piece. I'd like to hear about your experiments using the Zig brush pens if you have tried any of these gorgeous coloring books. Thank you! Kris
I'm sorry, Kris - I don't own any of those books so I can't say whether the pens would work well on that paper or not. Your best bet might be to buy a few of the Zig pens through open stock and then try them out on a page to see if you like how they work. Hope that helps! :)
How can you tell beforehand which books are printed on Amazon paper? I wish the publisher would tell us the pounds and roughness/smoothness of their pages
Usually if the book is printed by Amazon, it will say "Independently Published" under the publisher's name in the listing. :) Hope that helps!
I have to stop watching your videos - you keep showing me art supplies I have to have. I didn’t know the Lightwish super golden markers came in a fine tip, & I need them! Thank you so much for all the info you share.
Sorry! ;) :) Glad you find the info helpful! :)
I cannot find those pigment pens by we r memory keepers, do you have a link?
I just checked the Amazon listing where I bought them from a 3rd party seller and it now says that they are unavailable. :( I think they're a discontinued product so it may be difficult to find them. I found a listing on eBay, though: www.ebay.com/itm/146151431713 Hope that helps!
Yay! I love your chemistry and art videos. I hope to see more. It scratches both my artistic and science oriented itches. 🥰
So glad you like the mash-up! :)
Hey Connie. Love watching your videos. I was wondering if you could do a video showing how you use your ink pens to color. I have the STABILO pens and would love to watch some coloring with there ink pens. Thanks, Sue
Did you mean the Staedtler Pigment pens? The Stabilo pens are dye-based, water-soluble pens. :)
HI Connie, Always great video. The Pantone Markers are alcohol markers. They are the only alcohol markers that use pigments. I don’t know about steadtler, but pit pens are considered water based.
Pitt Pens and the Staedtler Pigment pens are both water-based - correct. :) I had to double-check the Pantone markers, though, as I was sure that I had bought the water-based ones. :) The only place I can find any reference to alcohol-based pigment markers from Pantone is here: shopsketch.com/products/pantone%C2%AE-x-royal-talens-illustration-system-basic-box?srsltid=AfmBOoqXCAA5iEX5zWKpY3Ik8k1aj9d0XeHw_uVgp54Uo6ryuQGf2KFZ The ones I bought were definitely water-based, though - the listing is here: www.dickblick.com/products/talens-pantone-dual-tip-markers/ Now you've got me curious. :) Do you have a listing somewhere for the alcohol-based Pantone markers?
Wonderful comprehensive video Connie.🥰
Thank you! :)
Hey try this.. I saw it on a very old video recently and it works great for any waterbased/pigment pen, by far the easiest/smoothest method I've found. It made me pick up my waterbased pens again. Put the darker color on a palette and then pick it up with the lighter color. It's a variation on tip to tip blending but much easier to control both in how much color you pick up and how fast it blends on the page. It also makes blending small areas easier It's only a two color blend but you get the appearance of way more colors since the ink mixes as it lays down without having to have a million pens. You can add a few colors to the palette at once and pick them up with the same pen and get nice variation of color for things like leaves, or bricks. You can also pick up more than one color at a time and mix them straight on the pen. You can use a blender pen to pick up a color and blend it to clear (very helpful when blending into another color already on the page), or the white pen to do the same and blend it to white. Be sure to start your application in the darkest area and work with side to side motion or small circles out to the lighter area.
Excellent tip!! I may have tried that in the past but had totally forgotten about it - thanks so much for the reminder! :) I think that's why I tend to shy away from the "tip-to-tip" technique - I find it difficult to control where/when the blend happens. With this "pick-up" technique, I can see where I would have much more control. Thank you so much, as always, for sharing your wisdom! :)
Your skills are outstanding-brilliant!
Thank you! :)
Hi Connie ! I am late to viewing this! I was going to sit and watch this a few times!!! I was so saddened to hear that Hanna had the health issues again! So I guess we will have to enjoy what we can? I like that you have them all! The time garden, then the night voyage and the time chamber I think? I love these books too! Look at Doodle Robot, she did a really cool pg change on one of them! Yes Amanda has been talking about the Molotov markers!!! I got the arrtex as well!!! I watched Doodle Robot do a review of them and I’m glad i got them!!!! I dont know if you can use Jet Pens in Canada? That is where I get the Pental dual hybrids from and they have some really cool colors? thanks for sharing your experience!!! Have a super weekend!!!
So glad you enjoyed it! Yes - I've ordered from Jet Pens before - great company! :)
Thanks so much for the links to the lovely, shiny background techniques! Much appreciated! I have the Neocolor I crayons, but no tempera sticks, so Im excited to give them a try, too~
Excellent - you're welcome! :) Hope you have fun experimenting!
[Sorry if im missing out on something, watched the full video 4 months ago, and now only the last chapter] Did you actually try out the blending liquid? Does it work well? Better or worse when filled in the pen? And do they also work with the Pitt Artist Pens? Thank you for your all your videos about my probably most favourite medium :)
I don't think you missed anything in that video - I didn't try out the blending liquid there. :) It does work well for the Staedtler pens - a little less well with the Pitt Pens. I wish the nib on the empty Schminke pen (the one I filled with the blending solution) was a little firmer, though. I think I may keep one of the light-coloured Pitt or Staedtler pens when they run out and then just fill one of those pens with the blending solution to see if that nib works better. :) Enjoy using your pigment pens! :)
Awesome haul connie❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Hi Connie. The case for the tape is to keep the edges clean. If you have seen a roll of masking tape that has been laying around in a workshop you know how dirty those edges can get. I prefer the frog tape to the 3M blue painters tape when I watercolor. I think you will like it. Keep making content and I will keep watching to the end.
Ah - thanks for the info! Very true - the roll of regular masking tape rolling around in my "junk drawer" in my kitchen definitely isn't looking very pristine. :) So glad you're liking the videos!
I am in the US and I also ordered the Zest-it and the UK sent it to me but also as you said at a pricey shipping cost. And I like you was very surprised they did.
Glad you were able to get it! :)
Ooh, Connie, can you let me know which video you showed the gorgeous, shiny background techniques in Small Victories at 1:18:19? Thanx much!
Was it the fish page? :) That was done with the metallic Neocolor I crayons (not the water soluble ones - the non-water soluble ones). I did a tutorial video using the same technique on a different page but it wasn't exactly a success (I tried incorporating some of the non-metallic Neocolor I crayons - that did NOT work :)). This is the link to that video - hopefully, there's something in there of value. :) I do give a step-by-step guide as to how to do it properly in the description box of the video. :) ua-cam.com/video/EBQS4w0p1pI/v-deo.html If you meant the gold background on the cardinal page, that was done with tempera paint sticks. Here's a video for that technique: ua-cam.com/video/yVOLRBCRY5E/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
Hi Connie! I am so happy for you to figure out with the workable spray! Should this also work wit just fixation spray?
I don't think a final fixatif type of spray would work - it would give a smooth finish (I think - I haven't tried it :)). You wouldn't then be able to colour very well on top of that smooth finish. Workable fixatif is meant to be worked on - that's why I chose it. :) Hope that helps!
@ Sounds logical 😄. I try it out on a piece of paper, you’ll never know….i let you know my thoughts.

@@colouringchemist you're welcome 😊
Connie, I’m glad you purchased and also liked those “pigment pens” that are really just thin tempura paint sticks that I mentioned to you on a past video. I only have the pastel set and none of mine are dry or crumbly like you are experiencing with a few in the full set. That is disappointing for sure. I wonder if the whole stick is partially dry or just the exposed tip. It is too bad that the Pantone pens aren’t like Pitt/Staedtler pigments pens, but good at the same time since the price for them is so high! Have you tried the Zig Brushables? They are dual ended pigment ink pens made for card makers I think. They have two colors per pen - one end is a lighter tint of the other end. They are also expensive but not as expensive as those Pantone ones! I think you can get large sets, small sets and maybe even individual pens at some stores. Would love to know if they would work along side the Pitt/Staedtler pigment pens.
Ah - you were the one who mentioned them - thank you so much, Heather! :) I think I have one set of the Zig Brushables but I had completely forgotten they were pigment ink - I'll have to see if I can find them and take another look. Thanks for the reminder! :)
Awesome haul Connie, you got so many lovely things. Hope you enjoy them all! I love those bigger nib super golden markers, they are awesome - I couldn’t find them on Amazon UK though. Take care ❤
Thanks, K! :) I just took a quick look and couldn't find the larger-nibbed Super Golden Markers on Amazon UK, either - bummer! I bought mine from Amazon US: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CYY6FR5X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1 Maybe if you reached out to your contact at Lightwish (I think they're the ones selling the Super Golden Markers), she might be able to hook you up. :) I think my contact's name is Emily. Hope you're enjoying your colouring and having a lovely autumn! :)
Oh man, it’s so disappointing when you’re excited about a new medium and it doesn’t meet expectations! But I think you’re right to return them… for that kind of money, the product better be EXACTLY what you want it to be. Earlier in the video when you were talking about the cozy coloring, and wanted something cozy but slightly more detailed, what came to my mind was the Annee Day & Matchstick Mouse books. I can’t remember if you have any- but there are lots of cozy scenes indoors while it snows or rains outside. ❤
Thank you so much for the reminder! I do have most of the Matchstick Mouse books and you're right - I should take a look through the Christmas and winter books to see if any pages "jump out at me". :) And yes - the Pantone markers are beautiful but won't do what I wanted them to do. No fault of the markers - they just aren't the product for me. :)
you can look for some Nia Nora books. I do love cozy critters, cozy haven. And she has some more in the same style
Thanks for the suggestion - I'll take a look for those books! :)
Great video! Thanks for sharing all your fun finds.
You're very welcome - glad you enjoyed it! :)
I think UA-cam is social media, isn't it? So I think you're definitely supporting artists. People who watch your great videos will buy these books! ❤🇨🇦🙂
You're totally right - UA-cam is considered social media as well. :) It's funny - somehow, in my brain, I put it in a different category than other things like FB, Instagram, TikTok, etc. I don't know why. :) But yes - if folks see my videos and then want to support our wonderful Hanna by purchasing some of her books, that's a lovely thing. :)
You got some great books and supplies to play with! And those molotow pens🥰 i love them so much! 🤗💕
Thank you so much for introducing me to the Molotow pens!! :)
Thank you for grabbing those dual metallic gel pens! I just purchased a set on Amazon 🇨🇦…the Pentel ones are expensive and hard to find sometimes! Have a great long weekend!
They are definitely a deal! Hope you're having a lovely weekend, too! :)
Hi Connie!! I always enjoy your videos so much!! love all the deep diving and the why of how things work! thank you for explaining, it is so helpful! I bought Arteza super glitter pens and they worked one time and dried up, never worked again....gel pens are fickle cause I know Coloring with K loves them!!! Take good care!😊
You're very welcome! Yeah - those Arteza glitter gel pens are weird. I think, once upon a time, they truly were fantastic and smooth and were a great product. Starting about two years ago, they must have switched manufacturers or something because the quality took a HUGE nose-dive. I think folks who still have some of the original pens are the ones that are loving them so much. :) It's too bad - it seems like the original ones were lovely!
Hi, love your videos. Do you have a link for Shands color changing shiny pen set of 18? Aloha Sharon
This is the link on Amazon Canada where I purchased the pens - it doesn't say "Shands" on the listing but that's what arrived. :) www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0CLFWH48F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Hope that helps!

Hi Connie just love your videos thank you for sharing your new colouring books and supplies.. I remember when Hanna went through it the first time it’s horrible I hope she will be ok.. ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxxx
Me, too!! Hugs for her!!
Good video. Doesn’t surprise me about the Pantone markers. Pantone is a standardized set of colors used to match colors across industries. Imagine you are the customer and request a particular Pantone color of something. The person matching it using the marker has created a new color because they did blend! I’m sure they are not suppose to blend ever!
That's an excellent, excellent point - I hadn't considered that. :) Thank you for pointing it out! They truly are beautiful markers - they just aren't for me and how I colour. But you're absolutely right - they are fantastic for their main purpose. :)
Actually, Ollie's (which is a discount store here in the US) has the Daria song books for about $3,99 each right now...
Wow!
@jicolourist love your videos by the way, thank you for sharing!!
Wow - that's a fantastic deal for you folks in the US! :)
Great video. So kind of you to show some love for artists. I can’t draw for the life of me. Being a super greenie so refilling pens is optimal. Looked the Krylon spray but $70 from Amazon Australia, doh. Loved your idea. Tysmfs Connie ❤❤
Ouch - that's expensive! Maybe there's a different brand of workable fixatif that's more reasonably priced in Australia - hopefully, it would work, too! :)

I hadn't heard anything recently but I hope her new round of treatment is working for her. Hugs and healing thoughts for her!
Can u please help me find where to purchase the new colors for Staedtler pigment brush pens
They aren't yet available in the US or Canada so I buy them from Amazon Germany - they seem to have the best price. This is a set of the 24 new colours: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0CTKNBR5V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Hope that helps! :)
Hi Connie, sorry if I distressed you with my health issues ; really sorry as I really don’t want to bother you or anyone with my probs (as, depression has been with me for a bit now ). - still not easy to cope with at anytime … Thanks for responding to me … I appreciate your concern 🌻🦋💖🌸
Not at all. :) ❤️
Loved your video as always! Have you ever tried Evazar London colouring pencils, just when I heard you mention you order stuff from Amazon uk, I believe the 130 set is only available there and so I’m struggling to find many reviews. I really like them! They come in a case etc, go on sale regularly, I paid £24 for my set :)
I haven't tried those pencils but I've been moving away from using pencils in my colouring - pens and markers are so much easier on my hand and shoulder. :) I probably won't buy any more pencil sets but I know that folks who have tried those pencils really seem to like them. I'm glad that they are available so reasonably for folks who would like to give them a try! :)
I'm watching the part about the more simple colouring books. Gabi Wolf has one, I think it is called Tiny Town. It's less detailed than the Mini Mania ones, but not super simple.
Ah - thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to look that one up. Might be just what I was looking for! :)
Colouring Heaven has a new full size Christmas Colouring Book in Walmart now. Guilty of enabling. Oops. Love the haul and insights on the products you have used, so fun to hear some of the product differences from county to country. Did you see the video where the Chemistry teacher taught her class how to carve a pumpkin with chemicals, so neat to incorporate holiday event with a learning experience. Thank you for sharing your time and talents.
I haven't seen the chemistry pumpkin carving video but I'll certainly have to look it up - thanks for letting me know! :) I didn't know about the Colouring Heaven Christmas book - I'll have to look the next time I'm in a Walmart. :) So glad you enjoyed the video!
You can stop looking for Sorcieres and the Seasons postcard book. I am sending them to you as a gift from me and letting you know so you don’t buy them before the mail from Norway reaches the forests of Canada. I love your channel! I have used pitt pens for years, but have learned so much from you, so Thank you! Your books will hopefully be shipped as soon as I know where to send them (have not looked up your info here on UA-cam yet) Hope this is some good news in a rather rough week 🙂
Do you have an e-mail address posted anywhere so I can contact you? I could not see one
Oh my goodness, Susanne - what an incredibly kind offer!!!!! You can email me at thecolouringchemist@gmail.com and we can chat. :) I'm overwhelmed and at a loss for words - the kindness and generousity of people in the colouring community is amazing. :) :)
How wonderfully kind!! ❤
I apologize for my delay in following up, but I finally sent you an email now. ❤
And believe me, it can only be good for me to let some books find a new home; I think I am devolving from collector to hoarder 😂
A smashing haul, thank you for sharing 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
