    Lovely video, I enjoyed it so much! Wonderful pages this month! About the contrast, Shelly has a good tip: when you think you finished your page, take a picture of it and edit it in black and white. You will see right away if you have enough contrast on that page. For me, this was one of the most important colouring tips I have ever had. Try it and see if it works for you. ❤

    I love the chain reaction to your first page in small victories, they all turned out so lovely! I really like your pattern page you did in Rita Berman it’s very cohesive and beautifully done. Your Maria trolle page really pops I think you did a lovely job on it! I really adore your flower you recreated in Momro the bear! It so pretty, and you made it unique to you! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️🇨🇦

    I love the Small Victories saga! I love how the dragon page and its facing page turned out! I also loved your owl page. I def would watch a planning video from you. I recently watched HappyCatastrophe plan out her pages for Spacetember and that was a very fun video. I also would love videos of you just coloring, not even a tutorial just you chatting and working on a WIP. 😊

    What an absolute pleasure accompanying you on your colouring journey. Your pages are such fun and so appealing. I love them all, and draw lots of inspiration from what you've done in the folk-art books! I hope you have enough crayons left to complete more of the Small Victories backgrounds cos your pages are just wonderful, including the odd man out with the black background. I think your orange flower page is lovely. I typically always color the entire page, so I can see it as a whole image...then go back in and add dark and light for contrast. It's much easier than trying to get all your values perfect as you color. I think the reason you didn't like it is pencil choice.. the prisma black is very flat and opaque. If you want to try supplementary shading try a poly payne's grey.. first it has a bit of blue in it so it's more natural and soft than black, second it's transparent so blends much easier. I like to do this before I add color, but it can be done after. I would also suggest one of the lighter pitt markers in grey (warm or cool depending on the color of your object). You can basically greyscale your page yourself (grisaille underpainting to get fancy), with the pitt marker. The lighter colors work best level 1 or 2 when starting, you can layer it for a darker shadow and be less likely to go too hard too fast. I did this a LOT when I painted in watercolor, since the pitt's are waterproof when dry they don't move. You can also do this with a pale grey alcohol marker if working with those. Just lay it down first then color right over the top of it. I know covering lines is trendy but I'm not really a fan, I like the line art.. I greatly enjoyed line and wash as well when I painted.. and I feel like taking them all out makes a page look mushy.. personal preference. I typically do very little of it, perhaps a flower, reflection, cloud outline, or a waterline.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  3 місяці тому +1

      Excellent suggestions as always. :) I've done shading with the Pitt Pen greys before - I have no idea what possessed me to grab the Prisma black this time. :) I've never tried the Poly Payne's Grey, though - I've grabbed mine and put it out on my desk to remind me to try it next time. :)
      And yeah - I take out line work selectively, too. Water, clouds, smoke - places where it would make sense. I think to make taking out all the line work look really good, one needs to REALLY pay attention to correct positioning of shadows and highlights and not be afraid to really use contrast. I'm not great at either of those things :) so I'd rather let the line work do lots of that for me. :)

    Since I haven't yet done so on the neo 1 mirror video (been a bit busy with health issues these past three weeks) I want to thank you now. It inspired me to get the metallic set and see if they could fix up a WIP I've been stuck with. In Worlds of Flower there is this planted pots page that I (as did many others) saw as an opportunity to turn into a window sill outlooking at a scene. My idea had been - it's high up in city looking out on skyscrapers. Shiny reflective skyscrapers and I did with metallic watercolour and I hated it. I could not get it to work, the reflective sun effect I tried only made it worse. However, those neo 1 metallics covered the mess right up, I used different tones for different buildings and now I've finished the page after like 4 years. So thank you very much for demonstrating them.
    Also I loved that pattern page in the Rita Berman book, it made this simple page look so stunning.

    Beautiful coloured pages. I wonder for the page in Maria trolle’ s book, have you thought about adding corners either by using metallic acrylic pens to draw up some various size circles on the corners or an ornate kinda border or darken the colour of the background at the edges!!. It might make the image pop up a bit!. But it is still beautiful as it is by the way.

    I would love to use marker for black background but i am so afraid of bleed thru and ghosting! Any way to avoid this?

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  3 місяці тому

      If you use an alcohol marker, it will always bleed through almost any paper - it's just the nature of the ink. :) You can try pre-treating your paper with something like Satin Glazing Liquid or a clear watercolour ground first - that can stop the bleed-through. Depending on the thinness of the paper, some water-based markers can also bleed through. I've been using the Zig Art & Graphic Twin black marker for backgrounds and it doesn't bleed through on thicker, better quality paper but it still will bleed through on thinner paper. If you want a black background that doesn't bleed through, acrylic craft paint might be your best bet. :) Hope that helps!

    Ooooooo....could you put a link to the round Mandala book from Germany? I want to get that so bad--it is so beautiful! I saw you flip it last month or whenever that was, but I completely spaced asking then for the link. Thank you so much for your videos, because you literally bring a new and fresh perspective to how you approach art, and I can only wonder if it is because you are a chemistry teacher, so a different side of your brain engages, bringing both hemispheres into action. It does make a difference in art -- really, anything -- if both left and right brain are engaged. And you engage both. Thank you. Edit: My right pointer finger has trigger finger for the past 2 o 3 years, and it locks to it's own whim, but I refuse to stop using it. I do have a finger brace for nights, and it helps a little, but not that much. I have a multitude of health issues which are bad on my bones, tendons, muscles and nerves. My doctor told me very sternly to keep coloring because it helps the brain and takes my mind off what hurts, and he is right. I have pain no matter what, so I do what I enjoy since the pain will be there even if I don't color. And I am a pencil lady :-D Don't give up your art, pleasepleaseplease. You inspire me. Edit 2: O_O Why did so much of that first part get lines through it? No clue. Please yes for chatty video picking out September pages. One at a time, rather than sticking you to the stress of knowing you MUST DO THAT PAGE? I love the cascade of this-got-on-the-back so you had to color the one behind. I love those shiny backgrounds, and the matte backgrounds. The blue one is a bit streaky, but eh. I love your art.

    I had to laugh regarding your background fiasco. Just a continuous chain of misadventure. I bet you were wondering if you were going to have to color the whole book at some point. Two thumbs up for all those rescues though. The metallic neo is gorgeous once you get it on there. I wonder if a vacuum would help... they make those fancy little ones for drawing but your standard household vacuum hose could be used as a test. If you don't mind a white edge to your page you could also try taping the edges, wrapping around the entire half of the book to the cover.. I've done that with paper pads and sketchbooks before to prevent paint from oozing over the edges. Basically making a temporary block pad.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  3 місяці тому +1

      After the 4th page of "mishap fixing", I did start to wonder how long this comedy of errors would go on... ;)
      I did buy a little hand-held vacuum for quick desk clean up but the crayon
      crumbs got created so quickly that I was trying to wait a bit between vaccums - otherwise, it felt like I was vacuuming every few seconds. :) It's kind of a pain-in-the-butt technique but it does give a very cool effect. :)
      And yeah - taping the page might have helped. It does look cool when it goes right to the edge, though - I'll try it with taping in the future to see which look I like better.
