    Thank you so much for this information. As someone who struggles with rheumatoid arthritis,this will help so much! I have become a lover of the staedler and pit pens also( thanks to your advice).

    I also didn’t like the way the pigment pens over-moved on top of the satin glazing liquid (and the dry time and curling of the paper). I have the workable fixative already so I will try it - especially in the Amazon books that I have also been avoiding. Thanks Connie! Glad to see a new video from you.

    Hey try this.. I saw it on a very old video recently and it works great for any waterbased/pigment pen, by far the easiest/smoothest method I've found. It made me pick up my waterbased pens again. Put the darker color on a palette and then pick it up with the lighter color. It's a variation on tip to tip blending but much easier to control both in how much color you pick up and how fast it blends on the page. It also makes blending small areas easier It's only a two color blend but you get the appearance of way more colors since the ink mixes as it lays down without having to have a million pens. You can add a few colors to the palette at once and pick them up with the same pen and get nice variation of color for things like leaves, or bricks. You can also pick up more than one color at a time and mix them straight on the pen. You can use a blender pen to pick up a color and blend it to clear (very helpful when blending into another color already on the page), or the white pen to do the same and blend it to white. Be sure to start your application in the darkest area and work with side to side motion or small circles out to the lighter area.

      Excellent tip!! I may have tried that in the past but had totally forgotten about it - thanks so much for the reminder! :) I think that's why I tend to shy away from the "tip-to-tip" technique - I find it difficult to control where/when the blend happens. With this "pick-up" technique, I can see where I would have much more control.
      Thank you so much, as always, for sharing your wisdom! :)

    The issue is folks are using all of these products off label, which is fine if it gives you the result you are happy with, but it helps to understand what they actually do.
    Gesso is designed to stop canvas from absorbing paint. That is why wet media "floats" and smears on it, it blocks all absorption into the paper. It's also supposed to be layered and sanded, which is why is is rough.
    Satin glazing liquid is designed to be mixed into paint to extend the open time and dilute it without losing body. It's clear acrylic matrix with propylene glycol, which has a slower drying time than water, thus increasing the drying time of acrylic paint. It basically has the same effect as painting paper with clear liquid acrylic, again no absorption.
    Watercolor ground (not sure if you have tried that, it does come in a clear option) is designed to give an absorbent base to surfaces that otherwise wouldn't have one... so you can watercolor on metal for example. Basically the opposite of the first two. It will protect the paper underneath some while still allowing the watermedia to soak in. It's not a substitute for sized paper, but better than unsized paper. It's designed to have "tooth" to help watercolor lay down better so probably won't give those smooth blends you are looking for with marker and/or tear up your nibs.
    Workable fixative is designed to keep dry media from smudging, while still leaving the paper "open" for more application. It also provides tooth for paper that is "full". It can be really helpful if you are trying to color on smooth paper and just can't get it to take more layers of pencil. It's light enough that it can be removed from paper with an eraser if desired. It's not designed for use with wet media at all. It's going to seal the paper but only slightly, and the resin is water soluble. This is why it's giving that "speckled" effect, the marker is dissolving the fixative and some of it is hitting the paper and grabbing.
    Basically, sorry to say, all of these aren't going to give you what you are looking for, which is hard pressed satin to semi-gloss paper... aka marker paper. This is why there are so many art papers sold, each of them does something different. It's like trying to use a bicycle tire on a car, both are wheels but not interchangable. I totally understand the desire to do something other than color in a coloring book.. and if one of these things works well enough for you by all means use it. My suggestion would be to focus on PDF books (or have the spines cut from your books and scan them), and print them out on appropriate paper... or find another hand friendly medium to use in non-marker friendly books.
    My recent "game changer" has been the discovery that I can use alcohol based blender to blend/activate watercolor pencil/crayon on any paper, no warp, no damage, and no bleed through as long as you activate once. Do you have Neo 2's or other soluble crayons? They may be an easy on the hands alternative on other papers that don't work with the markers, activated with alcohol blender. I also have pretty serious hand/arm issues and find inktense/watercolor pencil also easy this way, all you have to do is lay the color down in the general area you want it, which isn't a lot of work.. let me know if you want suggestions for the softest watercolor pencils. Unfortunately, while I haven't tried it I don't think the alcohol blender would work with the waterbased markers.. I'm 90% sure it would lift/push the pigment around just like it does on alcohol markers because they are wet and you are adding clear liquid to pigmented liquid.

      Thanks for all the info! :) I'm finding the workable fixatif spray actually does do what I want it to do for me so I don't mind using it "off label". :) The "speckled" appearance faded after the ink dried.
      Glad you're liking using the alcohol blender for activating your watercolour media! When I did the video comparing all the different ways to activate watercolour mediums, I found my favourite was either the Holbein Meltz solution (in a Schmincke Aqua Drop Liner) or an Ecoline blender pen. Since I did that video, Staedtler has come out with a blending solution that's meant to use with their Pigment Arts pens (their pigment-based ink pens) but I haven't tried using that blending solution with any other watercolour crayons/pencils - maybe another "experiment" for me to try. :)
      I do have Neo 2's and the Lyra Aquarelle crayons as well as sets of Inktense, Albrecht Durer pencils, Lyra Aquarelle pencils, Staedtler Karat pencils, and a bespoke set of Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle pencils and Supracolor II pencils that I put together. I really should be using all of these crayons and pencils more!! :)

      And yes - totally agree! There really isn't anything we can do about the original quality of a paper we're trying to work with - workable fixatif can only do so much with the poor quality (and becoming poorer!) of CreateSpace paper. :)

    The rough effect you're talking about, that's exactly what felt-tip pens do and it's why I've always hated them, even as a child. I'd get a set of felt-tip pens from an aunt for my birthday and then I had to try and look grateful, hahahaha!

      I hear ya! :) Particularly the bullet tip felt pens - they definitely tore up my colouring book paper from the kids' colouring books I had as a youngster! :) I'm finding that coating a page with workable fixatif definitely helps - not entirely (if you keep going over the same area, you'll eventually work through the thin layer of fixatif) but it's definitely working for me for the way I colour with Pitt Pens!

    Your piano playing is lovely!!! Autumn is my favorite season, too. I think it's a good idea to have options for making papers that don't work into papers that do work, for whatever medium is a person's chosen favorite medium. And safety should be a concern. I don't use markers or fixatives because of being so chemically sensitive. I loved the video (WELCOME BACK!!!) because I love to learn, and one day I may have to switch from pencils to pens due to the same issues you are having. I enjoy your search for solutions to problems, and really enjoy the results. Your "eureka" moments are epic :-D The results are beautiful.
    Thank you for letting October be autumn rather than a month of Halloween. I love October because of harvests, colors, crisp air, pumpkins and crunchy leaves, apples, walks while leaves are falling, cool then cold weather, and that beautiful blue sky with white clouds followed by rain, and the transition to white frosts in the mornings, grays and muted browns before the whites and blues of winter.

      Hallowe'en is a fun event but it's not something that I celebrate all month long. :) I think it might be easier for us to do that here in Canada as our Thanksgiving is also in October so we don't tend to think October=only Hallowe'en. :) And I love your beautiful description of October!!! :)

    Regarding the workable fixative, what a great idea! I know gesso didnt work for your markers, but i wonder if it would work for pencils tho on amazon paper. Harder cored layering pencils seem to hate that paper and i wonder if gesso will give the paper the texture they need.

    Nice to have you back! I've been using spray fix for a long time. Not usually under my mediums because i'm a big pencil person but, to help hold down glitter pens and soft pastel as i work. Some people are so sensitive to that smell. It doesn't bother me at all, int he winter i take it to the basement but i do get out of there quickly after. But i really try not to use it indoors if the roommates r home because they really hate it.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  24 дні тому

      That was the "eureka" moment for me - I'd been using it on top of soft pastels, etc., too, but had never thought of using it as a "pre-colouring" kind of page prep. :)

    Interesting. How I use workable fixative in the winter: turn on exhaust fan in guest bath, and spray lightly in there. Leave the fan on the full setting, and (usually) leave the sprayed item overnight before proceeding. In milder seasons, I spray outside.

      @colouringchemist  27 днів тому

      Excellent idea - thanks for sharing! That's kind of the one drawback to using a spray fixative - making sure that one doesn't end up accidentally inhaling too much of the over-spray or the solvent fumes. :)

    Thanks for sharing your ‘discovery’ I’m going to have to try that. What do you suggest for lighting up dark outlines in coloring books? I love Hanna Karlzon’s drawings but the dark lines on lips and other places are hard for me to make less noticeable. Anyhoo- I enjoy your videos, I go back and catch up on old ones I missed.😊

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 27 днів тому +1

      I've found the most subtle product for lightening lines so they are not as obvious (not removing them) is an opaque white pencil. I prefer Prisma white, because it goes on top of other pencil really well and has great opacity. I buy them in bulk for highlighting and use them with all of my other brands. Everything else is just really obvious to me or interferes with the pencil on/around it.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  24 дні тому +1

      I don't tend to lighten up the line work very often so I might not be the best person to offer advice. :) I have heard of folks using a light layer of matte white gouache to lighten up line work on a page - I think you should be able to colour over top of it. If I do decide to lighten up line work (but not get rid of it completely), I'll go over the line work with my white Faber Castell Pitt Pen. It's a pigment-based ink so it has some opacity but isn't completely opaque. I find it's a nice "in-between" kind of white - it doesn't completely and starkly white things out but it does soften line work. :)
      Hope that helps!

    Love this idea! Is the texture that either leaves behind impacting the tips of your pens?
    I've used satin glazing liquid successfully in Amazon and other books to be able to use watercolor and work with it more on the surface of the page without damaging the paper. It works really well but like with your experience it almost works too well lol, a lot of times it moves more for me than I wanted. I also don't like the texture it leaves behind for using colored pencils, so often I'll just only put it on the areas I want to blend watercolors, Neocolors, etc. If I'm using those as a base for a pencil section I usually don't need it. It still, in my opinion, leaves the least amount of texture on the paper compared to gesso or watercolor ground.
    I use the fixative to seal my pencil and pastel pages. I usually take my books onto my screened in porch, lay them out on the table, do a light spray on each page and let them sit there for 10-15 mins to dry and let the smell evaporate. I would probably be OK using it in a well-ventilated room in the house but it makes me nervous because of my pets...I don't want to use anything that would impact them.
    I have not tried either with the pigment brush pens, but I would like to use my set more often, so I'm hoping I can try this soon.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  24 дні тому

      The workable fixatif doesn't seem to leave much of a texture on the paper so I don't think it's damaging the nibs on my Pitt Pens or the Staedtler pens - not that I've noticed, anyway. :) Definitely try pre-spraying a piece of paper and see if you like the "feel" it leaves behind!

    I was excited to start this video -- because I have often wondered if there were “fixatives” on the market which might assist hobbyist use coloring penciled (especially watercolor pencils) and other mediums when working with cheaper paper. Your script gave me the impression I would get some amazing tips and tricks. While you showed one tested fixative, I was unable to find any “clear” fixative “clear” winner. (I was not aiming for the obvious pun - I am, however, desperately searching for a product that would allow me to enjoy coloring on cheaper mediums. Would you PLEASE consider editing your video description and adding a top comment summarizing your findings? I would like to be able to pull the video up at Hobby Lobby today while knowing that there is an actual product already on shelves that will help me solve this ongoing coloring book problem.
    On a very related note - I often find myself trying to color a page which lends itself to varying degrees of sheen within the page. For example, I have a page showing a young child playing in a “fantasy” setting outside of a church. The church has several stained glass windows. I would like to get the stained glass area quite shiny and reflective, but zi would want a different effect for other areas of the page. Do you have any additive suggestions for said areas?

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  24 дні тому +1

      I only used one type of fixatif - it isn't a comparison type of video so there's no "winner". :) The fixatif that I've been using for helping me to make different papers "behave" better for me is the Krylon Workable Fixatif.
      If I want to make an area shiny, I will use either the clear Gelly Roll Glaze pen or Ranger's Glossy Accents liquid on top of the already-coloured area. I think that's a better way to go if you only want a small area to be shiny and you want to control where the shiny medium is put down.
      Hope that helps!

      So glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for the kind words! :) I haven't been feeding the birds for a number of months now - I have to wait until the bears go into hibernation otherwise they'll just come and eat all the seed and rip down and destroy all the feeders. :) I should be ok to start bird feeding again soon, though! :)
      Hope your hot season isn't too bad this year!

    Great video on fixative, paper is a real issue with most of coloring books.
    About your finger problem, I had the same with my right thumb, it's called Le doigt de Rousseaux, I guess it translates to Rousseaux's finger. I had to have surgery. It was the best thing I did, twice, bc a few years later my left thumb had to be operated as well. It's easy to do and fast to recovery.

      Thanks for chiming in! I haven't yet sought any treatment for it - I just kind of deal with it and try not to aggravate it. :) It might be getting close to the time I should talk to my doctor about it, though - we'll see how much longer I want to just "deal" with it. :)
      Glad you were able to get your problem fixed! :)

    Hi Connie again. I meant that I wanted you to know whether colouring book is. All I could see is delft blauv or something like that. So I was wondering what colouring book that is. Thanks

      It's a tough book to find - here's a link to the book on Amazon US but it's only sold by third party sellers: www.amazon.com/Delfts-Blauw-flora-fauna-kleurboek/dp/9045321041/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2M62QO6DGBTYO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XjrjKzs9P3Kztz0mlX_4mw.-CxteoteMwjUJ421ckVZbshYDQEezH62xL9Mv95qfSY&dib_tag=se&keywords=978-9045321042&qid=1730336677&sprefix=978-9045321042%2Caps%2C414&sr=8-1
      You should be able to get the ISBN from the listing, though, so you can search for the book on different sites. :)

    A non taliking color along videos will also do if you are not up to it. Do not feel pressured to upload videos when you do not feel like it. I just feel like i learn a lot from you, i just wanted to say. I love your long videos, your videos are background to me while i work or color.

    I moved from California, where there is only one season, to Oregon, where we have four. I had always assumed I would have to go to New England to see the leaves change color, but here, right in front of me, through all of October, the leaves are turning red, purple, yellow, orange. O m g. Heaven. Get thee to a hand therapist. Surgery won’t help. A cheap splint from Temu will. Please, get hand therapy. I have Dipuentis (sp) syndrome in my trigger finger. A good chiropractor and a massage will help you tremendously. You deserve it.

      I LOVE fall colours! :) And I can ask my family doctor about hand therapy but I live in a small rural town that's kind of in the middle of no where - I don't know how far I'd have to travel for someone who specialized in hand therapy. :) But I can certainly look into it - thanks for the advice!

    Have you tried “tip to tip” blending?

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  24 дні тому

      I use that technique very occasionally to touch up a blend but I prefer to blend on paper - I feel like I have more control. :) But it's always good to be reminded of that technique - thank you! :)

    Hi Connie, I realized maybe I left a too long comment,or said something you didn’t like,but I don’t think so, I actually praised how much I liked your Chopin piano piece ,but you replied to all the comments,except mine. I found it a bit strange, I don’t understand why,because you always reply to everyone.But it’s ok

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  23 дні тому

      That's so strange that it's not showing up for you - I promise I did respond to your original comment!! Here's was what I wrote in response to your original comment:
      "So glad you liked the video! :) I'm afraid that's the only recording I have of me playing - I suffer from terrible stage fright. I do occasionally include some audio of my daughter playing - she's a much, MUCH better pianist than I am. :) And that's wonderful that you were a concert violinist!!
      The Delfts Blauw book can be difficult to find - here's a link to it on Amazon US but it's only available through third-party sellers: www.amazon.com/Delfts-Blauw-flora-fauna-kleurboek/dp/9045321041/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2M62QO6DGBTYO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XjrjKzs9P3Kztz0mlX_4mw.-CxteoteMwjUJ421ckVZbshYDQEezH62xL9Mv95qfSY&dib_tag=se&keywords=978-9045321042&qid=1730336677&sprefix=978-9045321042%2Caps%2C414&sr=8-1

      I hope you can see this comment and maybe the other one will show up, too! I'm so very, very sorry that you felt slighted or like you did something - I promise that's completely not the case!!

    Hi Connie, yes I did miss you, but I understand,and certainly you shouldn’t push yourself to make videos if you don’t feel it. I am,or should I say I was a concert violinist, I’m retired now and miss it because that was part of me , grew up with it since I was 6 years old. I played with several major orchestras,although I also had some disappointments,but I guess that’s part of many things. I am saying this because your Chopin was really lovely, very nice, I’m only sorry you didn’t play more. Maybe another time? I am 74 I can’t really play anymore, arthritis and other issues….As far as that Fixative, it’s an excellent idea,but I can’t deal with any of the Krylon products, I tried. I’m very sensitive to the smell and don’t have a ventilated area, I am in a small apartment,no garage or balcony, no outside,so can’t follow the instructions. So,that’s a no-no for me. I actually don’t mind using other papers, and I either make a copy or I scan and then print on the paper I want to use. Especially if the book has drawings on both sides, I don’t like to color there. Actually the FC Pitt and Staedtler work well and blend on hit press watercolor paper, good quality,also I found Ohuhu has a matte alcohol marker paper and works well on that. Nothing with a rough surface. But I perfectly understand you like to color in the book. You have done some nice work. That Dutch book “Delfts Blaw” I would be very interested if it’s still available, I will try to look myself, if you have a link, maybe you can send it to me. I can imagine October has to be wonderful there , where in Canada are you? I imagine the summers too,because i’m in Florida and it was a very hot,humid summer,plus we had these last 2 hurricanes, maybe you heard in the news, it was devastating, luckily not right where I live,but both were complete destruction in some e places,even in N Carolina. Take care Connie,see you next time.
