Wait...What Happened?: The 2003 Dixie Chicks Controversy
I’d say the greatest indie rock era was the early 2010s.
Sharp work 👌
"And David Guetta...is french" i'm crying
“Butt Folk” is the name I give to that era of very mainstream, radio friendly indie folk music. It’s like butt rock, but folk. The Lumineers is the Nickelback of folk, and Mumford and Sons is Creed.
Great video! I personally never liked the early 2010s pop music, so it's interesting seeing people here being so nostalgic for it. It was so corny and annoying, and it all felt so fake and over-produced. Indie was amazing though, I really miss the culture around that. Wish something like that still existed. But the 2020s pop seems to have a lot of indie sounds, which is pretty cool.
No doja cat
1:19:41 is probably the worst song in last 10 years.
one hour and a half without an analysis of Lady Gaga s albums in the early 2010s and her immense impact on the spread of dance pop and how to make pop itself, as well as the success of Shallow by the end of the decade.
what a good video
Unreal video
This is my fist video of yours and I’m definitely subscribing! New Wave is my favorite music genre and it was really great to learn more about this history of the genre and these bands that I’d only known bits and pieces about before. Great work!
The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Cult, The Stone roses and Toyah.
I wasn't expecting the juice, peep and X segment to hit so hard. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I really liked Juice and some X music. The nastalgia made it hit harder. Having friends running these songs all day, just vibing. Knowing people who struggled with pills just like them. I also hate to end the 10s with the start of the fet crisis.
Since it wasn’t mentioned, I just want to say that in 2011 Britney was fully embracing the EDM and Dubstep influences on Femme Fatale, which produced 3 top 20 singles including a number one hit in “Hold It Against Me”, additionally, deep cut from the album How I Roll has been credited by some as an early indicator of what would become “Hyperpop”. Love the video!
Seeing all of these memories from 2010 gives me a sense of happiness and melancholy because it was the last times of truly feeling young and innocent before life threw a curveball at me. When I see anything from the early 2010’s it almost feels like it was just yesterday but the reality is it’s been almost 15 years ago, which still gets to me. Life goes on though.
The video started out strong but quickly turned very flat. Im an hour and a half in at this point, and im questioning if this was worth it.. I think you failed to being it all together. It felt very disjointed full of random facts but did not give us a full overview of 2010s landscape in music. This probably took you a lot of effort to do, and I commend you on that
Olive ✨️♥️
1:19:15 - still hasn't released rep tv :(
This video was so good! Absolutely appreciated this, I feel like this video avoided repeating what has already been said and provided a fresh take. The recession pop / political tension dark ages was such an interesting framing device- and while every essay talks about how bright and electric that early half was, the transition and structure to how we got to 2020 has yet to be done so clearly. This was a great blend of social commentary context and technical themes with genre theory. Can’t wait for this channel to blow up!
Bro you just dissected my whole childhood and teenage years 😭
That’s right 👨🏻⚕️
Watching this video on Frozenversary Eve
It’s one of the best ways to celebrate
I was JUST thinking yesterday about the year I graduated (2013) was loaded with romantic/breakup pop songs. Like they were trying hard to get millenials to have babies 😂
How did you cut Gaga out of the entire decade but wax on forever about Sophie's unknown and hitless/unGrammy'd album? Definitely a Katy stan. Sabotage!
Good recap, it feels like a lot became hollow and soulless after 2011-2012. There are exceptions like hyperpop and the soundcloud rappers, but elsewhere everything became very generic and non-"musically opinionated" in a "we have to capture the mass market" kind of way.
Uptown Funk was SOTY in 2015????? I'm old 😢
You and me both lol
Por favor, traduza seus vídeos para eu mostrar a meus amigos. Muito obrigado por este vídeo, é maravilhoso.
28:56 White washing hip hop made this song more, "accessible".
The only thing The Beatles did better than everybody else was capitalizing on the British Invasion craze. If you can't see that you're dumber than shit.
Beautiful video, I cried at the end but OMG did the Pitbull joke get me lmao. I seriously would have believed it if you said Mr. 305 won every category lol
11:37 put some respect on that name.
The reason why so many people felt like the 2010''s was 'the death of pop music' is because of how frequently the algorithm was changing. There were trending genres, but they switched so often that many casual listeners tuned out and reverted to listening to music from previous generations. The 2020's, although even more divisive with it's trending genres, has found a much more stable ground through TikTok and similar algorithms. It also helps that record companies have been chasing one hit wonders to keep up with the 'it girl/boy' trend, which has made the charts more diverse than the 2010's were.
Im so glad to be alive when all of these unfolded. What a time
It was a great time for Pop!
Thank you for including the importance of SOPHIE. She really was an enigmatic artist ❤
Truly one of the greatest losses in music history. She deserves all of her flowers
no chief keef for 2014... fake news
lowkey too much talk about rap but this was a great video!
Rap was (and is) one of the greatest forces in Pop music 🤷🏻♂️
@@JukeboxHistory For sure! Rap has totally inspired a lot of pop music, but I hate how Pop music and Pop(ular) music are intertwined. Like, I totally understand why you spoke about it and my comment was not nearly nuanced enough to say what I really wanted to express. Like I wouldn’t call any of the rappers mentioned Pop stars doing Pop music. They were just… extremely fucking popular so they topped the charts. I dunno. I know I’m objectively wrong, but that’s just me being dumb.
Cool video! Kinda shocked you left Shallow out of 2018? It is literally the most awarded song of all time
Anti is ant-eye.
I’m still deciding
I graduated high school in 2010, so this is all cemented firmly in my early 20s party days. This is SUCH a comprehensive, well researched video, love love love.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
My dad is a boomer (1960) so he was my age in the prime years of the 80s and he loves new wave. Always played Depeche Mode, Pet Shop boys etc growing up, great music honestly
Nah I can’t believe you went through 2011 without mentioning Born This Way
Holy fuck I feel old
No Mac Miller discussion :/
Damn is not a party album. I’ve heard other people say this and I feel like they’re listening to a totally different record. Humble and Element are upbeat enough but this is the album with XXX, Fear, Yah, Feel and Duckworth. It’s moody and tense.
2016 was the best year
Before i watch i am assuming proto punk is MC5 and The Stooges.
The 2010s ovedid it on trap music
SoundCloud rap, at its peak, was so real-it delivered a level of authenticity that is sought after by many. They tell stories that the mainstream is still uncomfortable dealing with face to face. They have me convinced, as a 40-something cis white male, that it’s hard as hell being an adolescent or young adult in the United States of America right now. It’s my favorite ‘movement’ of the 2010’s by far, and it’s played a large role in me appreciating the 2010’s as a music decade far more, and far faster, than I’d ever expected. Great work on the video; thoroughly enjoyed!
I thought you were the Swiftologist with that thumbnail 💀💀
WOW... Listened to this while at work and I must say, what an incredibly well researched video. This was crazy informative and never dull or boring once. Gained a sub!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the sub 🙏
Oh no, you're not going to be covering all the classic bangers that came out of Azerbaijan and Mongolia in the 2010s!? I'm offended and shocked I tell you! 😂
