This video is unbelievably well researched, so so engaging and informative. Im endlessly fascinated with this sort of stuff across both film and music. Bravo
Rihanna is truly one of the only artist I can think of who can take an almost 10 year hiatus and STILL have fans begging her to release music. Like when she drops her album, the world is going to end. Also 1D’s success was insane because they were basically pushed into stardom before they even released a song. Thats insane.
Yea I do hope she drops again at some point. Def feels like she’s onto other things tho. One Direction really was lightning in a bottle. Was crazy to see Harry Styles win album of the year too
Rihanna is known for her many pop hits, literally who cares about an album by her? She never prioritized the artform of the album and she’s definitely not gonna do this now after a 10 years hiatus.
@@JukeboxHistorydo you think you might do one too? I already watched his which is very good, I recommend it also. But I honestly wouldn’t mind watching your take on it too! You have an awesome narration and editing; really enjoyed this video!! :)
I was a high schooler from 2010-2013/14 and let's just say what a time to be a teen!! The late 2000s early 2010s music scene will always hold a special place in my playlist
Nah the lack of mention for the Electra Heart album and Marina and the diamonds in the blog section is insane. Her and lana had tumblr in a chokehold and that album was incredibly influential
this video was so interesting and well done!! i was 8 y/o in 2010 and 17 in 2019, so it was rly fun to think about where I was at each of these stages in music and compare your examples with my own memories of what music people were talking about and how they were talking about it, from elementary school to middle school to high school
basically same! i’m 1 year younger than you but the way that this decade is practically my entire memorable life feels crazy (even though now at 21 it’s less than half of my life it feels so huge)
Your video was recommended to me in my algorithm. The most perfect video, no joke, 2010s pop in an hour & 35 minute video, yes please. On top of it you filled it with facts on award-winning and highly influential albums. I graduated high school and started freshman year of college in 2014, so these songs were the soundtrack to my teenage years and growing into myself. They all mean so much to me and to me this year of music is like no other. Well, I wish you would’ve brought up Lady Gaga more in her influence and reign on pop you made up for it by highlighting two of the best albums ever made Beyoncé (self titled) and Lemonade. These two albums and to Pimp a Butterfly, changed music and culture itself. I instantly subscribed because it’s mine baffling that your channel isn’t more popular. I am 1000% signed up for more in-depth music essays that are 30 minutes plus. I understand that takes a lot of time to create, but this video was extremely well done that I highly encourage you to do so because many of us clearly loved it. Thank you for showing so much love to this decade because since it’s still recent in people’s mind, online critics and UA-cam essayists tend to be a little harsh to it. Honestly, you could’ve talked about it for two more hours and I would’ve fully enjoyed it. Thank you for making this video, to your wife and anyone else who helped you make it.
I’m so glad you liked it! I was definitely back and forth on adding more Gaga since she was really on that cusp of 2000s/2010s. I will most likely be uploading videos more frequently too so thanks for subscribing!

Right?! When he passed 2016, I was like “Wait! Where’s Dangerous Woman???” Then 2018 “Wait a freaking millisecond! WHERE IS SWEETENER?!?!” Then he mentioned Thank U, Next, and I was like “Oh okay 🙃”
I love popular culture and it's fun to examine in all modern time periods, but there's something so cool about engaging with the media from my adolescence in this more subjective way. Especially when at the time it felt like the sentiment from older generations was that none of this was "real music". I like to watch video essays about Michael Jackson, the Beatles, the early days of MTV, etc. Stuff that is music history. But you say "Happy" and the "Frozen Soundtrack" I can instantly remember EVERYTHING about 2014. Macklemore winning best rap album? Yes! I remember that! I lived it! This decade is getting further away and now turning into "history". Great video! Fun for me to watch
It is pretty crazy thinking of how recent yet far away the 2010s really is. Before we know it we’ll be saying the same thing about the 2020s 😅 thanks for watching!
Here’s MY personal list of the popular songs of each year: - 2010 = “Firework” by Katy Perry - 2011 = “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO (ft. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock) - 2012 = “Gangnam Style” by PSY - 2013 = “Can't Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (feat. Ray Dalton) - 2014 = “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift - 2015 = “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth - 2016 = “Closer” by The Chainsmokers (feat. Halsey) - 2017 = “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - 2018 = “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 (feat. Cardi B) - 2019 = “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus)
As someone who'd rather listen to screaming monkeys than 99% of pop music released after 2014, I'd like to thank you for showing the amount of variety, influences, and transformations that go into the genre and making me realise that pop isn't as shallow as I thought it was before watching this video. Now I can hate it informatively :) (this isn't a backhanded compliment btw, this video is really great)

Just finding your channel, I love these kinds of videos! Mic the Snare also does something similar but I love how you talk about the albums and I'd love to see you do something similar for different eras
Glad you enjoyed the video! I don’t have plans to do the other decades but I do have a similar video on my channel for 80’s New Wave. Thanks for watching
Surprised with the lack of Ariana in this especially during the streaming era 2014-15 mostly I remember vividly she was everywhere but AMAZING VIDEO NEW SUB Update: just got to the 2019 part bravo 😂
41:43 So I was 15 and in HS in 2013. Trust me, everyone at my HS was singing ‘Let it Go’ and ‘Do You Wanna Build a Snowman.’ My friends were obsessed and I loved the movie, too! It’s crazy to think HS students were unbothered enough to openly show love for a kids movie but it was a great time to be alive! It wasn’t just the kids enjoying themselves haha
I was lucky to see Adele live in 2011. She played a small, standing-room venue in Philly and it was by far the best concert I’ve ever been to. (Ok maybe it’s tied with Beyoncé 😅)
I was born in 2001 so I grew up with during both eras and while I enjoy some of the laste 2010s music I really miss the optimism of the early 2010s It's like there was a level of optimism that existed when I was 14 that never has come back. I miss the upbeat music from back then even though my "core taste" were more formed about 2017 2018 when I was in high school.
That moment you realize Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar have a grand total of one solo studio album released since the end of 2017 and are still two of the biggest stars in the world.
I sure remember when Beyonce dropped that album. I found out because my Tumblr feed went crazy LMAO. I checked out all the music videos it was so neat. I recently went back to that album. Drunk in love is still a vibe. Heaven was cathartic to listen to since I have a loved one passing away soon.
In 2011-2014 i was able to save all my favorite songs at the time on spotify without a subscription or ads after every damn song. I could just log on my computer and click any song i wanted to listen to 😢 miss this so much
I'm extremely picky with my music. I basically exclusively listen to 70s and 90s rock. I also adore Stevie Wonder But like... When Bruno Mars went down the more funky route that shit hit. Some of the only recently released pop I can enjoy. The verses on the song Locked out of Heaven are just liquid gold to me. I feel like it says a lot if even someone like me can enjoy his music!
One-hit wonder, but for me one of the most defining pop albums of the early 2010’s was Diamond Rings’ Free Dimensional. Every song is a banger and captures that 2012 vibe *beautifully*

now that... that is a pop dissection. except, halsey could've been mentioned as well. halsey, just like lana del rey were leaning into alternative, and given they are alternative, they infused hip-hop in their art, which is an interesting direction given that hip-hop and alternative aren't a total polar opposite but rather, compliments each other really well, may it because of the genre history. going back with halsey, if lana is considered to be a pioneer of pop influence from the alternative landscapes of the 2010's and a quintessential icon of the genre, halsey further cemented the idea of infiltrating pop and hip-hop which catered to a tantamount number of hip-hop fans alike. not to discredit lana as if hip-hop doesn't like her, but the difference between lana and halsey is just halsey continuing lana's direction in influencing pop, trap, hip-hop in their sound. but in recent years, halsey has regressively went back to her roots which lead to the great impersonator, which is a darker in tone and finally scrapping away from trap.
I don’t disagree. Halsey has built a great career over the last ten years and honestly I think their 2020s run has been tough to beat. If I Can’t Have Love is one of my personal favorites from this decade. In regard to the 2010s they did have pretty strong presence in the second half. There are a few figures I left out or could have touched on more and Halsey was one of them. Will most likely bring up them in a future video though
The 2010s really had it all. There was diversity in music even though there were dominant themes, people had stronger attention spans and also appreciating music was a more common thing and music actually had impact. Nowadays everything is very...like fast fashion.
I think we’re starting to move in a good direction with artists like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. 2024 has been a great year for new music. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic job covering so much! Love the cousin & sister shout outs! It was a fun decade to be in a house hearing all this on blast and all the car rides. I always learned a lot. ❤
I'm not a fan of the music from that period. However, I like the quality of your videos. Very entertaining and well documented. I couldn't help but watch it in its entirety. Great job. Bravo.
even tho i'm from south america, we did feel the hard impact of the 2010s music. in Peru, we even had (still have, i think) a radio station where they played music (mostly pop) made in english lenguage, they played all of the songs that are featured here, i used to hear them all the time! thanks for this, it made me feel so nostalgic for my childhood
it's crazy that i lived through all these moments in music and throughout all this vid i was like "YEAH, OF COURSE, that makes sense!" you really put everything so well together, you just gained a new subscriber from Mexico 🫡 and my favorites artists are miley and gaga :) they still keep rocking it out!
This channel will have 1mil quickly with awesome content like this! Sheeeesh dude 🔥🔥🔥 also miss the 2010s 😭😭 the second greatest time on earth next to the 90s
gen enjoyed this video sm! its made me wanna give a listen to some of these iconic albums I've never actually delved into as they are outside of my preferred music genres :)
Thank you for putting in the section abt lil peep, xxx, and juice wrld. I was in middle school when they were at the height of their popularity and they had such a big impact on me and my generation. Truly all three of their stories must never be forgotten. Their music got me and my friends through our adolescence and now that I’m an adult i just hope that their legacies and the potential all three of them had as artists and as people can be remembered for what it was. Tragic events not forgotten or lost media.
What a great watch!! When you were discussing music and especially rap taking a more serious turn in the second half of the decade I immediately thought of when DAMN was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. So crazy that we went from Thrift Shop as SOTY to a Pulitzer for rap 4 years later
great video! i also grew up with this music and by 2020 i started listening and paying attention to kpop - specifically bts - and it’s crazy, looking back, how they were there all throughout the 2010s killing it and having crazy numbers but i never noticed them bc they were not in the mainstream us market! would love a video talking about them :)
I really loved the whole video! Very funny how you narrated all the years, and the way you divided each couple of years. I'm not from the US but I've been listening to pop from the US for as long as I can remember, I felt quite nostalgic. I hope in 2030 you give us a recap of the 20's! Keep going!
I remember Royals being THE song that signaled the end of the early 2010s and the start of the more minimalistic core 2010s
Facts
yeah kinds true but also reckon that Sam Smith was another who came in the mid 10s with a new sound that wasn't EDM
Royals was considered to be hip hop at the time. That's how different it was for 2013.
early 2010s music makes me so nostalgic man, i miss being a kid
It was a great time to be young! We have some awesome music coming out now too though fortunately

Genuinely one of the decade defining moments. Glad to see she’s doing well this decade too

love the video, is really well done. loved the costume changes🤣 you really captured music of the teen years for many people
Thank you for this thorough long format video, UA-cam definitely needs more of these 👏👏👏
I feel like the chokehold of radio friendly club/dance pop had on music by the likes of Chainsmokers and Zedd was a bit understated
This video is amazing. I love pop culture, ugh! Amazing work
love videos like this so much. need one for the 90s and early 2000s
What a time to be alive; music in the 2010s were amazing
I'm not a fan of the music from that period. However, I like the quality of your videos. Very entertaining and well documented. I couldn't help but watch it in its entirety. Great job. Bravo.
Definitely appreciate you checking it out! Thanks for watching
Early 10s was like a continuation of 90s house/techno. One of my favorite mini-eras of all time. Hugely influenced my musical taste.
even tho i'm from south america, we did feel the hard impact of the 2010s music. in Peru, we even had (still have, i think) a radio station where they played music (mostly pop) made in english lenguage, they played all of the songs that are featured here, i used to hear them all the time! thanks for this, it made me feel so nostalgic for my childhood
That’s awesome! It’s cool to hear how important this music is to people outside the states. Thanks for watching
I was vibing with all the song clips! 🎵 thanks for the historical, academic nostalgia ! Ganna play the rest of this while I deep clean my closet
Wow. This is a well crafted video. Good job.
it's crazy that i lived through all these moments in music and throughout all this vid i was like "YEAH, OF COURSE, that makes sense!" you really put everything so well together, you just gained a new subscriber from Mexico 🫡
and my favorites artists are miley and gaga :) they still keep rocking it out!
Miley and Gaga are def still killing it in the 20s! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing!
EDM Era was peak!
This video was so good, I watched it twice. But seriously amazing job on this.
I get goosebumps when I listen to music and damn, you playing the hardest drops of each song had me trembling like a chihuahua 🤣
“Shape of You” was so popular - I was backpacking in South America at the time and at the carrefour in Buenos Aires they played it EVERY DAY lmao
This channel will have 1mil quickly with awesome content like this! Sheeeesh dude 🔥🔥🔥 also miss the 2010s 😭😭 the second greatest time on earth next to the 90s
I also miss the 2010s but I will say the 2020s has had some killer music too which is a positive. Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
gen enjoyed this video sm! its made me wanna give a listen to some of these iconic albums I've never actually delved into as they are outside of my preferred music genres :)
It’s every music UA-camr’s dream to get this comment so thank you 🙏
Great video, love the jokes and the music commentary. Would love to see one of these about the 2000s. Keep it up man
dude this is actually a great video keep it up man
this was so well thought out and researched!! your channel is probably gonna be next late night UA-cam binge lol
this was such a great, in-depth video!! hope you blow up bc u deserve it
Thank you for putting in the section abt lil peep, xxx, and juice wrld.
Rip all the SoundCloud rappers
I feel attacked lol
What a good video, the production quality is top tier.
Thank you!
This is great! I've missed your coverage of music lately. I'm glad you're back!
Thank you so much! Always glad to see you’ve enjoyed the video. Here’s to uploading more frequently after this 🫡
great video man, i was sat the entire video
Dude this video was SO good! It made me emotional for some reason lmao
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
This channel is such a hidden gem. I'm so impressed by the quality!
Thank you so much!
This is an INCREDIBLE video. I'm disgusted at the view count! This needs to have a million views!!
Tell ya friends 🫡 thanks for watching!
You did a good job hitting all of the major trends of the 2010s. Great video!
Thank you so much!
so glad i found your channel, i adore essay videos on music :)
Thanks for watching!
how was twenty one pilots not mentioned in the 2014-2016 category? I remember twenty one pilots being HUGE. They were everywhere on the radio in 2016.
yeah i remember they dropped some cool hits nostalgia
wonderful video! i did learn a lot actually, so thank you.💙
Thank you so much for watching!
Such a good vid!! For me it’s The Black Eyed Peas
BTS is def an interesting group. There is a lot to talk about with them. Thanks for watching!
I really loved the whole video! Very funny how you narrated all the years, and the way you divided each couple of years. I'm not from the US but I've been listening to pop from the US for as long as I can remember, I felt quite nostalgic. I hope in 2030 you give us a recap of the 20's! Keep going!
Glad you like it! I have given some thought to a 2020s video when the decade is over but we’ll have to see 🧐 thanks for watching!
Michael Thee Snare mention!! Been an avid subscriber of his since the 2010s video, can't recommend his channel enough
