SAILING the SOUTH PACIFIC: harder than you think! [Ep159 RED SEAS]
We are taking on a huge sailing challenge in the South Pacific - 1500 nautical miles upwind from Tahiti to reach the super remote islands of the Gambiers. Fewer people visit this place each year than fly into space so it’s not for the faint hearted. And we’ve certainly faced our fair share of challenges, with seasickness, a broken autopilot and ripped sails.
But we are determined to push on and beat into the unpredictable winds as we head south towards the most southern part of French Polynesia.
It has not been an easy journey, but we’re crossing our fingers that the rewards will be worth it. This is our Gambiers Gamble…..will we make it?

RIPPED SAIL with 1000 miles to go! [Ep158 RED SEAS]
Переглядів 5 тис.14 днів тому
After setting sail from Tahiti on our 1500nm upwind journey to the remote Gambiers islands, we ripped our genoa and decided to make an emergency stop in a remote atoll not too far off our route. There are no shops or chandleries nearby, and certainly no sailmakers, so we have to do what we can to repair the tear and get underway again. After battling seasickness and a broken autopilot on our fi...

Interesting that you have the foam as well. Precision was very surprised to hear we had foam, and we all assumed it was after market added by our previous owner. Obviously not, if you have as well! That's pretty impressive that these 47s had that added feature and size from the factory! And thanks for making time for us that day of busy work 😄
Yeah, it’s interesting to see that the foam has fallen out of fashion. I guess it adds a bit of weight to the sail but it helps give it shape so we quite like it. And 130% Genoa is just perfect! 🤩
Hey, we’ve really enjoyed your videos so far-they’ve been great at showcasing different places and cultures. That’s why this one felt a bit off to us; it came across as disrespectful to the local culture, almost like it was ridiculing it. Just wanted to share our thought
We really appreciate your feedback! We always try to be respectful of the cultures we visit and to highlight their beauty and complexity. We will have to watch this one back and see where we may have misspoke as we certainly don’t intended to be disrespectful and just hope to have a bit of fun as we share these unique places.
The drum on the windlass can be used as a halyard winch if you can create a fair lead.
Thankfully, Indioko was designed to do exactly that. The halyard runs past the mast winch to line up perfectly with the windlass. We don’t always use it as sometimes it’s faster to do it by hand. Also, you get a better sense of stress on the halyard when doing it manually so we don’t damage things if anything gets caught. 😊
Can you share your chocolate cake recipe? I've never seen cake done in a bread maker and it make perfect sense.

Absolutely!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all!! People are wonderful, aren't they? We sometimes forget that! I just finished shoveling 4+ inches of snow. Enjoy your sun and warm weather!
Merry Christmas! Hope the picturesque white Christmas outweighs the hard work of shovelling. 😀
Great video
Thanks!
Hi guys thank you for the year of entertainment I just really appreciate you both and I also want to wish you both a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year , and hope we have more videos in 2025 Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia. I’m on the big Island
Merry Christmas to you too Cliff! Hope you have a really lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year! We are really excited for what 2025 will bring.
How great of the sailing community to come together and dive to get you a mooring ball that is just awesome. The world should have a lot more people like that willing to help other people just to be kind and considerate to one another. Very nice video. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year God bless and stay safe
You are totally right! We are constantly humbled by the generosity and kindness cruisers show each other. It spurs us on to give back in the same way too. Hope you are looking forward to a really fun Christmas and new year when it comes.
Oh no! Good luck fixing that auto pilot motor! Any chance someone has a spare? Maybe some buried treasure on the island lol Fair winds y'all don't let anything stop you from the adventure! ⛵
It’s going to be a challenge for sure. Not many people around here so I think we are left to our own devices for the most part. That said, any cruisers we meet will for sure be up for helping figure it out. That’s the best part of the cruising community.
Loving the sail, but you need to find a fix for the autopilot before taking that keep. Pull in and see if it can be fixed.
It’s been a constant pain and for sure it’s making this quest a lot harder. Fingers crossed we find a fix
Try and have a merry chistmas sorry you guys lost your auto pilot.
Cheers! Hope you have a great Christmas ahead. We will push on as usual and see where we end up. 😊
I woke up this morning in the back of my Catamaran in Thailand and had a nice video to enjoy. Merry Christmas and thanks for the present.
That's a pretty sweet way to wake up if you ask me 😊 hope you have a Very Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas y'all
Merry Christmas! Hope you have a great one with family and friends near by
An other great episode guys! "That should go swimmingly" has to go on a shirt. Happy holidays to you.
I think it’s an indication of our confidence 😂 hope you have a fun Christmas planned
Merry Christmas ! ! ! Thanks for sharing your journey with us
Cheers and a merry Christmas to you too!
Once again you prove, if there is a will, there is a way! Donate for a Dream
Necessity the mother of all invention as they say. 😊
There are three stages in sea sickness, one when you think you are going to die, two when you know you are going to die and three, when you are dying! There are also three invaluable tips, one keep busy, two keep the horizon sight and three keep your stomach full - it won't stop you being sick but you need something in your stomach to throw up!!
I feel like we made it to stay 2 but definitely keeping your stomach full is the key for us. When there is a lot going on during a passage, it’s way too easy to forget to eat for a day or two so we are doing our best to prepare a snack bag to enjoy while on watch. Just so funny that we both rarely feel sea sick and yet both got hit with it on this passage.
No problem just switched companies if anyone in the sailing community you would like it have them reach out
Ooo what’s the new gig? We will have a good think as I’m certain we can think of someone who would make good use of shade fabric. We would totally take it if it wasn’t going to be a challenge to ship.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
From Sailmaker to Chef! I was amazed when you pulled out the homemade Italian food after mending the sail, but when I realized that you had prepped food for the whole trip too, I was really shocked! I hope maybe Daryl at Precision Sails will see how bad you guys need new Sails and give you a good deal, since it will be a good deal for him too….🍀
Yes meal prep before passaging is one of the best tips we’ve learned, especially upwind. New sails would be such a huge impact for Indi and our future passaging. If you know Daryl….feel free to put in a good word! We would love to see what Indioko can do with some quality canvas.
They have what’s called a “long arm” sewing machine. It looks like a regular sewing machine , but super wide
Hmmm. We’re gonna need a bigger boat 😂
Hi guys, thank you once again for the fantastic video I’m glad you fixed up the sail keep up the good work lots of love and appreciation to you both Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia. I’m on the big island
Hey Cliff! Cheers for the encouragement. We are editing right up to the wire right now so squeezing these episodes out between sailing and repairing has been pretty hard going. It’s good to know you and others are enjoying them. 😊 Hope you are having a very merry Christmas. 🎄
You need new sails or those old ones reconditioned.
Tell me about it! We would kill for some new sails!
Short bread, will be having some at Christmas 👍🏼
Good to know you know how to celebrate 🥳
Bri did the sawing, Iain should be doing the cooking? Bri can steer and not get sick?
I have a strong feeling that we would both be much sicker if we let iain cook! 😂
@@RedSeas he can’t be that bad, surly not? Beans on toast, a little bit of paster in source…etc…? Bri, he is pretending he can’t cook… if he whent to college / /Uni or lived by himself he can cook, that's my theory. Come on Iain, I bet you are a very good cook.
You know you have arrived when the dolphins 🐬 come to say hello.
Always the best welcome party!
🥰luv u guz
Right back at ya! 😉
Looks like your sails been trying to catch up with the sailing Kiwis..😂 Hoping they are ok as a big Cyclones blown up in the Madagascar channel and caused a lot of destruction up the Whole region including the poorest French islands.. 😬🤞🏼 well done..on the sail fix.
Think this sail has seen far better days! Still, Bri and her sewing machine can do wonders to keep us going.
Having been brought up on Shortbread I don't think the burnt bottom would be an issue.. more than likely quite nice :)
Oh why do that to yourself! 😂 nothing nicer than some buttery shortbread.
You’re very prepared. 👍
In the same way flying is the art of falling while missing the ground, I wonder if cruising is the art of travelling without sinking 😂
Puckering indeed! Glad everything worked out.
This whole gambier gamble is turning out to be a lot harder than we expected it to br
Merry Christmas and happy new year As soon as this episode started and you mentioned the rip in the sail, you asked if this is it And I said No Bloody Way ! That’s called boat life and you 2 are Living It ! I am sure that there’s no way for you but onwards! Tally/Ho or something like that ! I’ll click off the pause button now and see what you’re up to next 🇨🇦Cdn .Dave🇨🇦
It’s turning out to be a pretty tough quest, this one. Between autopilots playing up and sails ripping, next week we have even more fun on our beat south.
Merry Christmas to you too! Hope you’re having a great festive season up there.
Team Ginger wins! thanks for the video.
Cheers! We squeaked through I think. 😊
A real sailor would have hoisted themself up the forestay and stiched it by hand while smoking a pipe and underway in a thunderstorm. Well at least according to Hollywood.😂
But only during a 50knot storm with rain lashing down and a Spanish galleon in pursuit that’s already firing canons towards them right?
@@RedSeas And a dental hygiene challenged lookout in the crows nest yelling, " they're gaining on us Capt'n!"
Thank You for this week's video. I would like to wish ya'll a Very Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎉. Until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Aloha and Cheers 🍻
I forget who it was during a crossing was having the same auto-pilot issue. They found a passive electrical field (I think it was a stored drone/battery) too near the auto-pilot compass housing which was in a forward hull. Once cleared it sorted out straightaway.
Yeah, those fluxgate compasses can be a real pain. We have cleared everything from the area so honestly think the autopilot brain may have gone senile. We will see what we can do to coach it back to usefulness tho.
@ you’ll figure it out, no doubt.

Great job on the repair
Thank you! Cheers!
Brioni is a baller with a sewing machine! I also appreciate her ingenuity by standing inside a hatch (standing on the bed below?) to be in a better position to sew the sail! Sailors really are ingenious people!
She is a wizard on that thing. So pleased to have a sewing machine on board…and someone who actually knows how to drive it!
I have a box of screen in my garage if you would like it. Let me know?
Thank you! I think we are still working thru the screen you were so kind to send us before. It’s amazing stuff. Some more window shades coming soon to Indioko. Just need the time to take on the project properly.
Nice ending as I’m watching this on Dec. 13, Carol of the bells is quite appropriate.
Cheers! I will have to go back and rewatch this one. It’s been a while. We have been so busy with the big Christmas giveaway this year, it’s been fun keeping up with comments and editing. Need the break to go watch this again. 😊
Someone was in Gambiers within this past year. Curtis, Kate and Roxy on Sweet Ruca maybe? Thank you. YES! Their episode Ep. 156 posted Jun 30, 2024. So not NO ONE!
I think we looked it up and more people summit Everest each year than transit the Pacific Ocean and of those who do, less that 2% make it to the gambiers. So while we may use some artistic license to say “no one” I’m sure you can forgive it given the relative rarity of our passage. Also, from recollection the guys of Sweet Ruca were sailing east to west when they went there. We are doing a 1500nm beat against the trade winds to achieve this little quest. 😊
The compressor is air cooled, will it not overheat with the lid closed
It’s a good question but thankfully our engine bay is well ventilated. We also opened the engine bay every 25/30min to switch over tanks so it doesn’t get much time to warm up thankfully.
Great video
Cheers! It’s going to be a beast of a quest to get to the gambiers but hopefully it’s worth it for all of us.
thanks guys, always enjoy your content. I noticed one of the downwind shrouds was slack, is that how Indi is rigged or?
Yeah, that’s the indication that we were overpowered with our main. Indioko’s rig could do with a tune up but in this case, it was more of a user error than a rigging one 😜 It can look quite scary when the inner shrouds are flexing on the leeward side but to some degree, this is not uncommon on catamarans. The harder we crank down the rigging, the more the bridge deck will flex and sooner or later we won’t be able to open or close any of the cupboard doors 😂
So dumb question from watching a thousand videos, zero experience.... if that auto pilot is struggling, does dragging a line behind you help you track more in a straight line.... Yes it would slow you a little.... but would it help you with the autopilot issue or just going straight in general?
Hi Cory, not a dumb question at all. It’s been written in sailing books for decades that you can tow long lines behind the boat to create drag. Often writers go as far as to suggest adding a bucket to the end but in reality, the forces acting on the boat usually result in you simply losing your bucket 😂 In our case, the issues we were facing included our compass swinging randomly, this would have means that any lines we dragged behind us would be overruled by the force of the rudders doing their thing to try and “correct” our course. Quite annoying to say the least. The good news is, we have a bit more info on the autopilot coming in next weeks episode so hopefully you get a better idea of what we were up against. 😊
