  • We've been sailing around the world for almost four years but we've only been sharing half the story. We've shown you what it's like to sail ON the water, and to swim IN it.....now we want to show you what it's like to dive UNDER it.
    We are excited to install an electric dive compressor on our sailboat so that we can refill our dive tanks wherever we are in the world, no matter how remote. It should be quieter than a petrol powered one and we are going to install it inside our engine bay for a permanent solution.

    Having a 3d printer on board might be the most genius idea for live aboard I have seen in a long time.

      It’s saved the day a few times. It’s funny, we have had it onboard for a few years but never really shown it in episodes.

    As one who has been a Scuba Diver since 1970 one problem is air intake as a location with smell will end up as taste in your dive tank air. Most people forget about that. worked at a marine repair and Dive Shop where we put our intake above the building to stay away from dirty air at the intake of an oilless compress as which also added a larger intake filter and hose. where the air intake is also added to the taste in the air. Extending the air intake outside of your engine room will improve that too. as will a longer high-pressure hose to fill your tanks on the deck and add a gage there also. As compressed air makes heat in the tank too. One should dump the scuba tank completely and remove the value to drain any water.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Місяць тому

      The “garage” was exactly for that purpose. By going electric with the compressor and extending the intake hose to the garage, we are pulling air far away from any oil or generator exhaust fumes so hopefully that works out for us.
      As for extending the gauge, that is definitely something we will be looking into (along with the power buttons) but we are in the middle of no where right now so perhaps it goes on the list for the future. 😊

      @coolhand6669 Місяць тому

      Also I recommend a garbage can or something like a garbage can filled with cold water to stick your dive tank in it helps when you're feeling your drive time to keep it very cold or cool. And also make sure your tanks are certified don't screw around with uncertified tanks because they can go off they've had it has happened and it's not pretty. I also agree that you should put your air intake as high as possible to get really good clean air I would put an inline air filter also

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Місяць тому +1

      Haha yeah, we figure that if we need to cool the tanks then we can hang them off the back of the boat as a pretty big water tank 😂
      Luckily, Bri and I have pretty good air consumption. We are comfortable doing 120ft dives / around an hour and only using half a tank each so it’s not likely that we will be filling the tanks to the max all that often.
      It’s interesting, we placed the air intake filter inside the “garage” on the port side so it was getting clean air from the back of the boat (less salt) and up out the way of the electric compressor. The generator is about 7m over on the other side of the boat and the exhaust is outboard so I really think we have it as clean as we are going to get it. Still, time (and lots of diving 😜) will tell.

      To be honest, we just need everyone who enjoys the adventure to share it as wide as possible. We love that we can feel connected to everyone who takes the time to follow along but a few extra subs would certainly make a things a little easier.

  • @Gladtobeleaving

    When I worked at a dive shop we used to keep the tanks in water while they were being filled, in order to dissipate the heat from compression. Also be aware that dirty air into the compressor doesn't just taste bad, but when concentrated can poison the diver. Especially critical since you'll be running your generator which will be expelling CO2 in its exhaust.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Місяць тому

      Yeah, we designed the filler hose to be long enough that we can hang the bottles in the sea off the back of the boat if the heat becomes an issue. As for filler air, that was one of the driving factors to going electric. The compressor is in the port scoop with the air intake outside (in the garage we made) while the generator is a good 7m away in the starboard scoop with the exhaust outboard so pretty much as far away as possible. The chances of us picking up any exhaust fumes is pretty much zero which is a relief. 😅

    There's a rumour that water runs down hill !!! Usually down electrical cables and into junction boxes. Please put your cable entry on the bottom side , helps to stop the Bang. When you compress air it gets hot hence that big yellow fan a lot of ventilation is going to be needed !!! Thanks guys for the videos really enjoy them, keep them coming and enjoy life

    • @RedSeas

      I hear you. We didn’t show it in the episode but the cable has a skrim around it and a big loop back on itself to reduce the risk but spinning the entry makes sense too. Will take another look and see how it’s holding up. At this rate, it’s probably oil filled 😂

    Heat in that compartment with the hatch closed may be an issue. I have a compressor and it generates a lot of heat. Getting a safety so you do not overfill the tank is really important. Really good work you two.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Місяць тому

      Yeah, we were thinking of putting another blower fan in there if the heat becomes a problem. We were testing on a pretty warm day and everything appeared to be ok. Filled two tanks and the engine bay wasn’t any warmer than the air outside really. Still, something to keep an eye on for sure. Haven’t tested the safety valve yet but kind of don’t want to 😂

    1st - you guys are so amazing I find myself grinning thru the whole episode because I am having so much fun. 2nd - version 2 of the ‘hose garage’ should angle down toward the deck so any water that accumulates there doesn’t drain into boat. I figure you’ll come up with some other ideas or reasons to print version 2 later and remember there was at least one additional viewer I put to consider.

    Great episode and hello from your sister ship Best Life (2004 Leopard 47). Just a couple notes as I also have an electric dive compressor in the exact same spot. Make sure the hatch is open when you are running it, heat will build up in the locker and you can fry your compressor. The water bath is a great way to keep the tank a little cooler and slightly safer if we are concerned of an explosion. We might do that moving forward, we will see. Our tanks are all steel so they can take the heat a little better than newer aluminium designs which helps.

    Do you need to cool the dive tank while filling?

      It’s definitely an option but not a necessity. We designed the system so that we have the option to hang the tanks off the back of the boat (in the sea) if we think they are getting too hot. It’s also a handy safety feature to fill tanks in a water bath as it can contain the potential explosion.
      In our testing so far, things haven’t gotten warm enough to be concerning yet. Just warm to the touch after a full fill.

    Do the tanks get warm at all during filling?

      Absolutely. The action of forcing air into them can get them to warm up. Not burning hot but warm to the touch. Some people will suspend their tanks in the sea to give them a cool water bath. We have a long enough fill hose that we have the option to do that in the future but these steel tanks do pretty well with the temperature change.

    I don't want to be a Debbie Downer in case you have not been doing this, but you may be slowly poisoning yourself with the dive compressor. A lot of people that install similar items make a fatal error. I had to tell another sailing channel the same thing. Lots of times these compressors are repurposed industrial type compressors. The people selling the things as dive compressors don't even put the food grade oil requirement in the manual...shoutout to Mantus and others. I myself have a repurposed Yong Heng installed on my 30ft Catalina Sailboat. Anyway often the manuals don't tell you to use synthetic food grade oil expecting it to only be used for industrial applications. The stuff is super hard to find, but anything else will slowly contaminate the bottle and the filter elements. I for instance have like a 3ft long filter element dogily taped to a broom handle. Your filter is also pretty small compared to a lot of them on the market so expect frequent changes. The auto purge valve is great on the unit, I have to manually purge mine every few minutes. Also nice 3d pint and cover. Epoxying the print is a good idea. Though you may have to print it in a better material if you are forced to do PLA or PLA+. I think ABS is likely the best filament but you would have to print it outside because of the fumes. PETG, ASA, or TPU are perhaps other good ones. if the layers don't separate though PLA will likely last years. I've been printing thousands of dragons, dolphins, custom parts, etc for our local farmers market every weekend. I have lots of experience with 3d prints now. That compressor is a good healthy one though and should last a while, just make sure to have the filter changed often and the food grade synthetic oil in the viscosity the manual suggests. Oh also don't run the engine exhaust fumes(or other nearby boats) into the inlet if you can help it. Hopefully your inverter can handle it long term as those compressors likely pull 15 to 20ish amps..

      It’s a good shout on the oil. We got hold of some coltri recommended oil but will definitely consider alternatives for the future. The air filter is a little on the small side so I’m sure it will be on the upgrade list at some point. The joy of compromise of course 😜
