      Cool. We will try and do more of them. It’s so much fun learning from people as we travel and we are so grateful that Mata Iki was willing to give up so much of his time to teach us too. Thanks for hanging out and for taking the time to drop us a message here too.

    What a delightful fella, to share his knowledge so freely.
    I was left thinking that it must be a pretty safe community to live in. I mean, your next three years income is just hanging on a float out there for the taking.

    • @RedSeas

      He was such a nice guy. Hope we get to meet him again some day. It really is amazing how safe we have felt in so many of these remote places. We did hear that there was some issues with theft when Pearl farming collapsed back in the day and there was a good bit of stollen pearls moving around but for the honest guys out there, they work tirelessly to bring in an income. Such respect for them all.

    I like the odd shaped Pearls. The necklace chains are to me mesmerizing. 👍 🙂
    Fascinating 🤗

      Yeah, the odd shaped ones just have so much personality to them. We just couldn’t believe the depth of colours in each of these pearls. So hard to show in video but hypnotising for sure.

      @@RedSeas Just very informative! I knew that pearls came from oysters but your whole explanation about the strings, cages etc was very good. Of course both of you with your infectious laughter and how you go about everything helps. Actual sailing topics also appreciated. IMO lots of the You Tubers are not great sailors with a few exceptions like Better Together, Barefoot Doctors, and Colin. But they become better sailors while going around the world.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  3 місяці тому

      This is super helpful. Thank you. Hopefully we fall on the right side of the sailor status. We don’t often show the details of passages, mainly because we kind of do things automatically a lot of the time, but we keep trying to find ways to share more of our adventure and sailing is obviously a huge part of it. If you ever want more details on a particular aspect of sailing, just drop us a line and we can make sure to include it in a future episode too. Cheers!

      @@RedSeas Well, I know how hard it is to get content. I did a crossing in May from Bahamas to Panama on a 42ft Cat and decided to film some of it! Super fail! I managed about a 2 minutes of useful footage and decided it was useless to me and anyone else! 😁 Keep up the good work!

    What an interesting video. The most I knew about pearl farming was they stuck something in an oysters mouth and hoped for a pearl.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  3 місяці тому +1

      It was an eye opening experience for sure. The detail and skill that goes into positioning the nucleus was great to see. French Polynesian is known for their care in making sure the oyster lives for many years. In some parts of the world, they kill the oyster as part of the harvesting which is a shame. As you saw, there are accidents and disease that can cause that but for the most part Mata Uki worked to ensure the oyster wasn’t damaged/hurt during the whole process

    A very interesting video.
    Wow black pearls go from anywhere between €75 up to €1500+ a piece, although I doubt the actual farmers get those prices.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  3 місяці тому

      It was fascinating to try our hand at the process. Certainly, the farmers are working very hard to harvest these precious stones. Wild how expensive they can be.
