    I have a question for you. Last year during tour de fleece camajfibers had a challenge to cable spin. I really liked the look of my cable yarn I produced- but what would a cable yarn be used for. What would you knit with it

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts 4 години тому

      Cabled yarn provides exceptional stitch definition. It would be great, if it’s a solid color, for knitting anything with cables.

      It’s so lovely to see “reality” spinning, where the wheel doesn’t cooperate and won’t take up, where the wheel adjustments have to be refigured and tried out and dialed in, and even where the spinner forgets how she’s supposed to be spinning the fiber. This could be a video of my spinning life! Thanks for leaving all the real life spinning in your video!!! harpingJanet

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts День тому

      It would be hard to spin short forward draw spinning from the fold. It lends itself to long draw. But I think the difficulty level is about the same as spinning long draw from roving(woolen prep). I think that both woolen prep fiber and spinning from the fold lends itself more to being spun long draw. But you can spend long draw with any fiber you like.

      The chunky 1 TPI is more fragile. You saw my hat and I have worn it for years. I think I made it in 2018. It still looks great. But I take really good care of my stuff, and it’s a hat. I wouldn’t make mittens out of it. I made a cowl and still looks great too!

  • @nz-nz
    @nz-nz 4 дні тому

    I have pretty much moved away from doing 2-ply yarns now. How I do my (mock “plotulopi” yarn) singles is spin the thickness you want (and I don’t pay much attention to how much twist I put in). I then wind the yarn from the bobbin onto a “frame” (which fits inside my tub) making sure the yarn remains straight (as opposed to being like a bowl of spaghetti if in a hank). I then emerse the frame into really hot water. The yarn can either be left on this frame to dry, OR, I take it off, spin dry and rewind onto another larger “frame” to dry. When completely dry I pass it back through my spinning wheel and remove 80% of the twist. The end result is a VERY slightly “felted” and twisted yarn which holds its structure much more than regular “plotulopi”. Best part about knitting with this type of yarn is you don’t have ends to weave in! Any joins, you just spit splice together!

    How do you stay so close to the orífice? I have a Kromski Sonata. Also, how do you decide which end of the bobbin faces you-the larger, or the smaller? And what difference does it make?

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts 4 дні тому

      I have a Sonata too! It’s my plying wheel. Kromski has an explanation that I read once upon a time, but what my brain took away is it doesn’t matter much. I will have to find my book and give you a better answer! Staying close to the orifice takes practice. The draw needs to be right for the amount of twist you need. Low twist =higher draw. @jkfiberarts 5 днів тому

      Welcome! Thanks for watching! This is a pattern that I found in a blog. It is called the simple rules,cowl. I believe there is a link to it on revelry. I used thicker yarn than theirs. You can make it any length you want. I cast on enough stitches, where I thought it would be not too long. The pattern is simple. All you do is knit the thin and pearl the thick. That’s it. It’s random. That’s what makes it look so organic. you can make it as wide as you want. Stop Knitting when you like the width. I would knit a swatch to make sure that you like the needle size you selected. Spin happy!
