100% Lightroom workflow for Infrared Photography
Introducing the new version of my Lightroom Infrared Color Swap Profiles. The new version adds 22 new color swap profiles for each temperature. Do you enjoy using Adobe Lightroom to edit images but are frustrated by the challenges and extra steps required to edit infrared photos entirely within Lightroom? Would you prefer to avoid the round trip to Photoshop and the extra TIF or PSD files? With these profiles, you can color-swap your infrared images directly in Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and even Lightroom Mobile without a roundtrip to Photoshop!

As much as I appreciate your free starter profiles etc, these looks fantastic!! Considering how much time these can save someone not familiar with creating their own I'd say their quite a bargain. Thanks for you dedication to infrared photography and processing👍👍
Can you add the gh5s?
Added. Thanks!
Hi Rob, love your videos. Thank you! I would love to know if there is an alternative to the adobe DNG Profile Editor as it is out of date and will not work on my newer 2024 iMac. I have scoured the internet and am at a loss. Can you help here?
The Infrared Profile Pack addresses this limitation with infrared profiles for over 400 cameras. 590.red/infrared-profile-pack
would it photos taken on a 590nm conversion be more or less flexible to edit? how about the ultra-contrasts white effect?
For IR filters between 515 and 720nm, the biggest difference is color saturation. Lower numbered filters have more color saturation, higher numbered filters have less. When using the White (preset in ON1, profile in LR), the filter impacts the color saturation in the sky.
are all of the beautiful ir photos you see painted/manipulated in a similar fashion as this? is there no editless, or straight out of camera(ish), solutions?
Here are some straight out of camera solutions. For monochrome images, use a 720nm or higher filter and use a monochrome profile in your camera. For color images, use a full spectrum converted camera with an IR Chrome filter. You can even shoot in JPEG if you set your white balance in camera.
@@robshea thank you so much for your time/reply 🙏🏽 i’m considering buying a 590nm converter e-p5 + i might try to play around w/ the in-cam pre-edits + if the colors don’t cooperate, i might try a 700nm lens-filter + go monochrome
“so LUT me pick one of these” 🙊
Hi Ron, I was wondering how far I can go without converting my camera? Can I assume all images in this video are from converted camera? I am considering converting my Fujifilm X100v. I purchased a Urth 720nm IR to place on Canon R16mm lens. Sending it back because I cannot achieve bright foliage. I’ve tried, many times and profiles in -100 and -50 temp, with terrible results. I coming to the realization that Black and White is all I can get, but still NOT pleased with results. Hoya filters have been ordered. Am I expecting too much from only using an IR filter.
I have seen many people struggle with the first brand of filter you mentioned. With a quality 720nm filter, such as the Hoya R72, you can get excellent results. The colors will be muted and you will need a longer exposure, but you can take great images. Here are some examples of images with an unconverted camera. ua-cam.com/video/ej-6iz9fuLE/v-deo.html
@@robshea Yes, that video was the one I was working with. Anxious to start again with the Hoya filters. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. You are appreciated Ken-
So maybe I can find some help here: I just recently picked up IR Photography with my dads old LUMIX camera. I am trying to edit just like it's told in the video, but AF seems to not identify the blue sky on the RAW images I try to work on. I am using an old Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5, with the 720 filter by Hoya.
You could turn up the ISO to focus and then turn back down for the shot. You could try manual focus. If your camera supports it, I recommend peak focusing with the peak color set to blue. This makes manual focus a breeze.
@@robshea Thank you very much, that helped me out quite a lot. I am trying to get deeper into the topic, but feel like I already reached the limitations of my old Lumix. Theres quite some pixelation happening. Highly appreciated!
My custom profiles were sent to me super fast and I love the different looks they give me as a starting point, without needing PS. Thanks Rob, super happy with these additional resources
Thank you !
I have the GFX100ii with the Kolari IR chrome 82mm lens. any photos I take look nothing like any of this, they are all just a gross blue hue. everything MUST be edited so not sure why your saying "in camera".
The IR Chrome filter requires a full spectrum converted camera. If all you are seeing is blue, it could be that you are using this filter on an unconverted camera.
This is not working at all for me, I used a Kolari IR filter, so everything started out blue for me and when I selected the first step (picking white) everything changed to looking fairly normal.
Which filter are you using? Is the camera converted or unconverted?
As mentioned above the Kolari IR Chrome filter. Aparently your supposed to set the white balance in camera to see the affect vs post editing but no clue how to do that and there is very little information online that can help walk someone through it step by step.
@@SDA-Sound Kolari sells many filters. For IR Chrome, if you are shooting JPEG, you must set a WB in-camera with the filter on in the lighting conditions you will be shooting. If you are shooting in raw, setting the WB in-camera gives you a good preview of your image but is not required, since you can always set a good WB while editing.
Simply wonderful! Thank you!
Thank you for the presets, very helpful establishing a new IR workflow
What about ccd vs cmos?
One of the key differences between CCD and CMOS is how they handle noise in low light. Since most infrared is shot in direct sunlight, noise is not usually much of a factor. They should be similar under these conditions.
For the first time I can see an actual use for Profiles in Lightroom and I would pay for such a feature. Any chance you may have them compatible with Panasonic G1 (it's the only IR camera I have at the moment)
Yes, profiles are supported by the G1.
Delivery was very quick. Thank you. I received my updated profiles and have started to test them out. My initial response is "Wow!" The flexibility is terrific. Keep up the good work!
Hi Rob, I am hoping that you'll get to see this message even though this is an over 4 year old video. It appears that Adobe DNG Profile Editor no longer works on the latest OS on MAC-OSX. I was reading that they want us to use Adobe Profiles SDK instead. I have been having difficulty understanding what they are telling us to do. Have you had any success in using the SDK? I was looking through your videos to see if you've updated anything because of it, but haven't noticed anything. Thanks for everything you do to forward the IR world. Regards Colin.
I’ve created a free collection of dcp profiles for hundreds of cameras so that you do not need to use the DNG Profile Editor to set a good white balance. You can get details at 590.red/infrared-profile-pack I have used the SDK for color swapping. You can get more details here 590.red/lr-ir-color-swap
@@robshea Thanks Rob. I've noticed that now. It is installed for my Pen-F, but didn't seem to behave the same on the iPad as it did on my MacBook Pro. I'll have to experiment a little more with that. Somewhere I built my own profile, but I can't seem to find it since changing computers.
Rob, You certainly must have been kept busy producing your IR Color Swap Profiles. I have them loaded and they work as advertised. Great idea! And Great video! Next, I will set up Lightroom Presets to access them.
Thanks! I am currently swamped producing everybody’s profiles. It’s a good problem to have and I appreciate everyone’s patience.
hi Rob, I just purchased new version of your Lightroom Infrared Color Swap Profiles. Thanks for the discount.
Hi Rob first thx a lot for this simple and very demonstrative video. I got a question about the ordering : you say to précise the camera model after the ordering. Does it mean that if I have different cameras I need to pay for each or when I pay for one I can have different profile for my different models. Thx in advance.
I include profiles for up to two cameras with each order. If you have more than two cameras, you can get additional details here under Multiple Cameras: www.robsheaphotography.com/lightroom-infrared-color-swap-profiles/#order
@@robshea thx Rob your link is perfectly clear. So Îwill begin by 2 cameras, I suppose I just need to put the names of the 2 cameras after my order (d70 and d610 in my case).
Nice! These look like some fun profiles to work with, and I especially love the distinction of hue shift vs channel mix for the color changes.
Hi Rob, it is really a fantastic move. I too play with WB for some time. but this will complete the edit in a very creative way. i am eagarly waiting Thank you!
STUNNING!!!
Fabulous Rob, thanks!
Yes yes yes yes. Such a good video on every level. I'll be checking for my upgrades later today. Thank you❤
cool! thank you. my @5000 works great with your profiles
Looking forward to trying these new profiles! The more pastel colors, and the sky variations look great!
Rob, thanks so much for all you do. I just received my 590nm today (over a month waiting). Looking forward to trying some color variations.
I love shooting IR. It's fascinating to see something that's we cannot see with our own eyes. But what's most amazing is how humans where made to see the full array of colors from 400nm to 625nm. How did this happen? God created us in an amazing way. Gave us the ability to see full colors. Awesome!
I was lucky with my lenses. I was already using a Tamron 17-28 2.8 Di III RXD, a Tamron 28-75 2.8 Di III RXD and a Samyang 45 1.8 AF and when I converted a Sony A7 to IR, it turned out all these lenses are great for IR.
Does INFRA-RED work at night.
Here are some examples of infrared at night. instagram.com/p/CgCbTdFu-x2/ instagram.com/p/CpaOB_KuV6g/ instagram.com/p/Ch2dYVGu3l6/ instagram.com/p/Cb21vpyupqT/
I am confused by your selection of color profile when printing to a printer. I have always selected the ICC profile of the paper I am about to use and not Pro/Photo or AdobeRGB.
Using the ICC profile of the paper you are printing to is ideal for doing your own printing. Select a color space is the best option when using a third-party printer and they have indicated the color space they prefer to receive a file in.
The problem with Adobe Lightroom white balance is its slider's range is too limited. You can't set it low enough.
I created the Infrared Profile Pack to address this problem. You can get more information here: 590.red/infrared-profile-pack
I created IR profiles for my Canon PowerShots S100 and G16. I then put them with their respective camera groups in Photoshot Elements 19. I used both locations mentioned in the "Where are my profiles blog article. Or...at least, I thought so. But, when I load a RAW file from either camera into PSE and use the dropdown to select the profile, the only profile camera raw lists for me is "Infrared Temp -100." No matter what I do, the camera specific profile isn't made available to me. Any thoughts on what I'm likely doing wrong?
I have less experience with PSE, but here are the issues that you need to validate in order to see a profile in Adobe products. - When creating a custom DCP profile in the DNG Profile Editor, ensure that you have selected a base profile from the correct camera model. If you load multiple images in the program from different cameras, then the base profiles from different cameras will be listed. - You must be viewing a raw file or DNG file created from the raw. JPG, TIFF, PSD, or DNG files created from these do not support DCP profiles. - The camera model of the image being viewed must match the camera model of the profile. - The DCP profile needs to be installed in the correct location, as you reference in 590.red/where-profiles - The profile will appear in the Profile Browser. It will not appear under Presets. (Probably not your issue here, but included for completeness.) - The LR/PS program must be restarted. Newly added profiles are only loaded on program start.
Rob once again, thanks for passing on your knowledge. Forgive for using this video to ask a profiles question. I’ve just come across the fact that the Adobe DNG profile editor doesn’t work with the latest Mac OS. There is a suggestion on the Adobe forum that you now need to use the Profiles SDK. But how do you use it to create an IR profile, ie without using the DNG profile editor? If anyone knew how to do this, I thought it would be you. Once again, sorry to piggyback on this video.
I create infrared profiles for hundreds of cameras. If your camera is not listed, there are instructions for adding cameras. You can download them here: 590.red/infrared-profile-pack
Rob, thanks for the link.
Did you do an update on shooting infrared with more modern iPhones? Is it on your book?

Brilliant video best I have seen about color adjustments.
I've got an ancient version of Photoshop (5) and don't see a "blend mode" under the Layers tab. Is there another way to achieve this in my version? Thanks.
Unfortunately, blend mode is required for this method. The Channel Mixer and HSL adjustment layer methods do not require a blend mode.
@@robshea Thanks Rob.
Interesting about the movement between shots, may it's the heat on the metal camera body warming the neg up and making it expand on how hot it gets.
thank you Rob - this is an excellent video. I have a Canon pocket camera that's been converted and I've been struggling to get the best out of it with Affinity. Thank you for such a brilliant video.
hi Rob. Thanks for answering some of my questions wrt to editing IR files. I have yet to use a trial version but did try version 6 before deciding on On1 2024. My question is: can edits made to one file be copied and applied to another file in a sequence? Can an edit be saved as a preset specific for 590nm or 720nm?
Yes, you can copy/paste settings between images and save settings as a preset.
Wonderful video. Thank you 👍. Liked and subscribed 😊
Hello Rob, thanks for all the information. Please advise here. I tried creating the Profile as well as used the one from your profile pack (Nikon Z 8 Infrared Temp -100.dcp). But unfortunately, anytime I am choosing a neutral color to set the WB, I am always getting 2000 as the lower value. Tried switching between the other profiles back and forth but didn't help. My filter is 590nm and Lightroom version is 13.3.1. Any help is appreciated.
I'd be happy to take a look at a raw file. Send to 590.red/share
@@robshea Thank you. I have uploaded the raw NEF file. Appreciate your help and time.
@@royimagesdotcom This image appears to have been taken with a 590nm filter on an unconverted camera. This filter allows too much visible light to pass and will capture very little IR light. With unconverted cameras, you should use a 720nm filter, which captures only a sliver of visible light and allows more IR light to be captured.
@@robshea Thanks a lot Rob for your time, always appreciate your insights.
Sorry to bother. 2 questions. 1.) If looking at a sRGB jpg photo in LrC, I should use sRGB monitor mode. If looking at an AdobeRGB jpg photo in LrC, I should use AdobeRGB monitor mode. Is this correct? 2.) If looking at a RAW photo in LrC, I should be using the monitor mode depending on the output, saying printing then I should use AdobeRGB monitor mode. Is this correct?
I would set your monitor to the largest color space that it supports. This will allow you to view images with smaller color spaces just fine.
great videos - thank you! I wonder if there is a similar way to do this in DarkTable ?
In darktable, open darkroom. Find the color zones module. Select saturation. Use the picker to select the foliage in your image. Drag down the dot in the panel. Select lightness and drag the dot up slightly.
@@robshea Thanks Rob - Just had a quick play and I think it will do very nicely indeed. Thank you so much for this and all the advice you give. This is the first area in photography that has got me genuinely excited in ages, largely due to all the help and encouragement you give.
