great content!!! did you ever test Viltrox lenses? Please let us know which one you recommend.
I have reports on a number of Viltrox Lenses here: www.robsheaphotography.com/infrared-lenses-fujifilm-x/ The only one recommended is the Viltrox AF 33mm ƒ/1.4.
wow thanks for the big help
Hi Rob, just watched your Intro to IR pics video. Very well presented and informative- thank you. I’m in the process of purchasing a full spectrum converted Canon 6D. My problem is that it doesn’t have focus peaking for focusing in live view. Is there another focusing method you can recommend?
With most AF lenses, you should be able to autofocus with live view. For manual focusing, the next best method is the magnifying frame. Use this to zoom to the image and focus.
Sir iwant infrared vedeo luts mainly skin protect I used your recent luts but skintone was damaged so any possible
590nm or higher high-pass filters will block the light reflected from the skin, making it look translucent. To capture better skin tones, use a 550nm (orange) high-pass filter.
@ ok but how to chustmize 550nm in Lightroom mobile
@@SudheerSirla-mi6us The white balancing and color swapping would be the same as other infrared processing. Here are some videos for processing in Lightroom.
Hi Rob, I love your content. Do you recommend the custom profiles for my setup? Not converted Canon R6II and Canon 24-105 lens with screw in IR FIilters? Thank you
Since the R6 Mark II can shoot in raw, it really depends on which raw editor you are using. Use this page to help you decide. 590.red/raw
@ I use LR and PS
@@petrahaidn9219 For LR and PS, you will get the best results for color infrared with custom profiles, such as those in the Infrared Profile Pack. 590.red/infrared-profile-pack
@ thank you 🙏 I'll check it
I use custom WB presets in camera, which NX Studio will honor. That also enables seeing the approximate result right in the viewfinder (with mirrorless cameras), so I can spot overexposure and other problems if they occur. I do use the LCH method for channel swaps, although for more complicated cases I will usually export TIFF to Affinity Photo and continue there.
Neewer missed the boat here. The 850 and 950 seem pretty close to redundant, and it should start at 590.
Stellar. Really quite helpful!
Very nice walkthroughs. Far too often, I jump into color editing without much attention to contrast and then have to start over, because contrast effects color so much. It is generally easier to- at least for me - to get the contrast close to the goal as step one.
I would be interested to see your take on the UV+IR (super blue) filters. I have been using them lately and really like how the images convert to monochrome. Of course, it is always nice to see what other people are doing with them. Cheers
Your custom profiles and IR presets have been invaluable during this first year exploring infrared photography. Your book is great. Love it!
Thanks for your support!
Perfectly explain. Exactly what I need ! 😁
I would love to see a video about the ´superblue´ filter
Excellent presentation. In particular, calling out the difference in focusing for IR is very different than for visible light. I remember that older Canon lenses used to have markings for IR on the focus ring.
Yes, many SLR lenses had an Infrared Index Mark for focusing with IR film.
Thanks - Really helpful
I recently picked up a secndhand expodisc 2 here in Australia , I am surprised it is giving me much better results with the Kolari Irchrome and an Ir blue ndvi filters , I have found it helpful pointed at the sky with the sun behind me .
How do I get a live white balance for IR? Do I need to buy neutral gray cards that are specifically IR calibrated? Or are standard photography white balance cards already made to also be neutral in IR/UV? I have an old camera that's both too old and too beat up to be worth the effort of selling, so I'm thinking of converting it to full spectrum because I've always wanted to get into IR (and UV) photography. So I'm just trying to learn up on some of the basics ahead of time.
The standard method seems to be to set the white balance on green foliage, grass works well for me.
Grass, as davestokes says, or even concrete - anything neutral grey.
Anything without color is an ideal white balance target, including clouds, pavement, and gray cards. Using grass as a white balance will produce white foliage with a 720nm filter. Grass is an OK white balance target for 590 and 665 nm filters. However, it should be avoided with 550 nm filters, as the color transmitted with greatly impact the WB.
@@robshea Thank you! I think I understand. The WB goal with IR/UV is more about finding a point that gives an aesthetic color balance (or contrast balance, if doing b/w) as opposed to "accurate color" rendering? (In quotes since I realize IR/UV pics are false color, and camera sensors/computation aren't really calibrated in those ranges.)
@@davidg5898 Correct. Essentially, you want the neutrals to be gray, the sky to be gold, and the foliage to be blue. A good WB separates the sky from the foliage color and allows you to apply your creativity to the colors.
Does Darktable 5.0 allow the program to "Invert" the image? I've downloaded the program to try it out and you guide would be very helpful...
You can invert with layers or a LUT. darktable doesn't have layers, but you can use an invert LUT to get the same effect. This free LUT pack contains an invert LUT. 590.red/lut2
@@robshea Thank you, Rob.
Sir I don't have pc so how to use these presets in my mobile lightroom
If you are using an Android device, you can install profiles on that device. www.robsheaphotography.com/lightroom-infrared-color-swap-profiles/#lightroom-cc-and-lightroom-mobile-installation iOS devices do no support direct installation of profiles.
Can i use lightroom mobile
Yes, although you may need Lightroom desktop to install the profiles.
@robshea make a vedeo how to desktop to install profiles plzzz sir
@@SudheerSirla-mi6us You can find instructions here. www.robsheaphotography.com/lightroom-infrared-color-swap-profiles/#lightroom-classic-installation Making a video is a good idea as well!
Zip file protected by password
I just double checked the zip file and there is no password required.
NX Studio will, at least, use the custom white balance from the camera. PhotoShop and Lightroom will strip those off when you try to modify the file.
Nice video, as always. I like the way you are upfront with the positives and negatives - Some just concentrate on the negatives or just say it's not as good as Photoshop. For those of us on a budget it's helpful to know that IR processing is possible, on a free program, and well done for throwing in workarounds for missing tools.
Hi Rob, just found your channel and have a few questions. I have a canon 5d mark ll that I would like to convert to infrared. I’m confused with some of the terminology don’t understand it all. I’m just looking for the infrared only to change it to the black and white photos that infrared does so well. Because it’s a full frame I believe I will only be able to use a one lens, correct? The camera I use now is canon 5 d mark 4 . The lenses I have are the 70-200 ,16-35 and 24-105 all L series. Which lens would be best to use with the mark 2 camera? All new to me but I just love the infrared landscapes. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Focusing via the optical viewfinder in DSLRs is calibrated for visible light. When you convert a camera, you can have the optical viewfinder focus recalibrated for infrared. However, this calibration only works for a single focal length with a single lens. With zoom lenses, it might not apply to all focal lengths. Focusing via the live view is not impacted by this limitation. Live view focusing works with both visible and infrared light. You can focus with all lenses and focal lengths using live view on the rear screen.
Very nice video explaining the capabilities at a high level as it relates to infrared photography. I think many people disregard the software that comes with their camera since it’s free. You’ve shown how someone could get a pretty nice image with not a ton of effort. Good callout on things to be aware of as well.
I know I am late to the party, but it was really cool to listen to your interview on The Photo Seen podcast. Shooting in IR is great but it is such a small niche that you can feel like you are alone on an island. Finding podcasts and UA-cam channels like yours in much appreciated.
Thanks for listening to the interview and for your support!
Thanks! Nikon has improved very much their code throughout the years but they are still behind what other countries do. Thom Hogan usually complains about that. Hardware is fantastic, coding is ten years behind what American or Chinese do. It is a cultural thing probably.
Thank you so much! Now I can use it for infrared, too.
It's possible to record adjustments (for later use)
Brilliant. I just sent my old Canon 5DmkII for a 590nm conversion. Everything I shoot is edited first in LR Classic before any masking edits in Photoshop. I’ll be downloading your profiles and studying your videos in great detail.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm new to IR and trying to answer this exact question. (used converted camera, what filter?) I'm also probably missing something, but is it not important to set the WB of the camera to effectively run this test? And if so, would I set a custom white balance, and if so, upon what color or lighting or screen section? Used DSLR, converted camera, no lens filters, estimated to be between 590 and 720 so far. Nikon d70. Cool vids, I'll be deep diving with you for awhile!
Since you are shooting in raw, the WB set in the camera does not matter. Beyond the test, when shooting normally, setting a WB in camera can help you get a good preview in the viewfinder, but has no impact on your ability to set a good WB in your editor.
@@robshea OK, many thanks for your response and your efforts. Well done!
I just picked up a filter yesterday and got the right lenses also. A converted Canon 600D with a 50mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/2.8. Took some video and photos of me and a colleague applying sunscreen. Will see when I can upload them on my channel. Surely a difficult thing with the insane high ISOs and lower shutter speeds required. But even in winter with overcast conditions it is surprising how much UV light there still is. I will see in how to get a proper blacklight studiolight setup done but I will take my time with that to get it right, get it safe and make 100% sure it's not UV-C 😅
May I know how to install the infrared profile to Light room please?
Instructions here: 590.red/where-profiles
I used a Canon SX20 IS for years with no hot spot and have some amazing images. Now I'm using a Sony RX10 III and it's terrible. So I need to perfect this. Just got lightroom so will give it a go...

Excellent ! Merci beaucoup.
Hi Rob, are these colour-swap profiles working for a non-converted mirrorless Canon R6 with screw-in IR filters?
Yes, they work with any unconverted camera using a 720nm high-pass filter. Other filters will not work.
@ thank you. I red that you offering a discount for the package?
@@petrahaidn9219 There is a discount available for those who purchased the first version.
@@robshea ah okay, thank you
Is any type of ND filter all work on a converted camera? 😊
Not all ND filters are rated for infrared light and may operated differently in IR. Ensure that the ND filter you use is rated for infrared light.
Thank you for this Rob. I'm using DxO more and more (mainly because I love the way it renders RAW Files). Thanks to your influence, I'm using LUTs for my Infrared Photography. Based on Dx)'s current limitation with using more than a fe of them, I can see myself picking my top ten and loading those into the program. Best wishes and many thanks again, Stephen
I need to give it another go, last time I tried it was buggy on Mac. Really over Capture Ones interface issues now also and their subscription garbage. The Hue 180deg adjustment looks simple and nice overall as I hate working with Affinity and having to develop an image from RAW before further adjustments can be made then wanting to adjust WB again
I am seeing less sharpness around edges of my infrared pictures taken using lumix dmc-zs25 self converted camera with 590 nm ir filter. Is this normal?
This could be due to a couple of factors. 1) Corner sharpness tends to be worse in infrared compared to visible light. 2) Diffraction tends to be worse both in infrared and with cameras that have a smaller pixel pitch. You can see this here: www.diffraction.cam/?camera=Panasonic+Lumix+DMC-ZS25
@ Could you please add Lumix dmc-lx2 and dmc-fz70 to the camera list. I am planning to convert one of these and wanted to check which one would be better. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in this field.

I know this is an old video, but right now this cost around 450-500 with filters in kolari website. Which is only around 100 dollars difference with converting a canon eos r100. Which is a no brainer option if you already have a number of rf lenses and want to try infrared photography, right?
The DNG Profile Editor does not run on the newer MACs -- I have a MacBook Pro M3 and the editor will not open an image. This is fairly well commented in various places on the Internet, but Adobe has not responded as far as I can tell
