Skiing Mt. Audubon // Indian Peaks Wilderness
In todays adventure I ski Mt Audubon, a prominent Colorado 13er in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. I stare at this peak every day so getting to finally ski it was awesome. The snow conditions were incredible top to bottom and I finally got those corn turns that have been eluding me this year.
I parked at the Brainard lake winter lot and biked to the Mitchell Lake Trailhead where I proceeded to climbed Crooked Couloir and ski the SE slopes (Kept saying SW in video). Skied on 6/1/24

Skiing La Plata's North Face // Colorado 14er
Переглядів 1,3 тис.14 днів тому
In todays adventure I ski La Plata's North Face for my last 14er ski descent of this season. I've been eyeing this face since last year and finally got to ski this beautiful line. La Plata is Colorado's 5th highest peak at 14,343 feet and located in the heart of the Sawatch range. This day climb clocked in around 12 miles and 4400ft and I dropped down the north couloir at 9:15am where the snow ...

    When going number two do you just trowel a hole and pack TP?

    • @jakekaiser1399
      @jakekaiser1399 3 дні тому

      It depends on the area and regulations but usually: 1. Many dispersed camp sites area near trailheads or places with a pit toilet so will use these when convenient 2. When allowed will dig a good ol' cat hole. Make sure you are not near water, far from camp, and pack out your TP 3. Some places require packing out waste (often desert environments) and for these use wag bags or bucket + bag method I hope this helps

    Do you roll the windows up when it rains all night? Trying to figure out how to get air flow on those days when it is non stop rain.

    • @jakekaiser1399
      @jakekaiser1399 6 днів тому

      I live in an area where non stop rain is not really an issue. During heavy rains with the windows down I get some drops into the sleeping area. If this was a more common issue for me I would buy side window deflectors so that I could have windows open without any rain getting in. Below are the Subaru one but know there are cheaper alternatives on Amazon and other places: amzn.to/4eHD0QZ Hope this helps and happy camping !

      This area is closed to vehicles when I did this trip so just stashed it in the woods and assumed anyone who made the journey to the base of this climb was not a thief. I've never had issues with this but do tend to try and store bike where not overtly visible to decrease risk as much as possible

    GREAT video, and, may I say, great background music. 3X Langley vet here, always saw it as very special and most ways a better trip than Whitney. A lot of people bound for Whitney spend the day prior at Cottonwood Meadows just because it’s at 10K rather than Whitney Portal’s 8K, and the two trailheads are fairly close driving distance from each other. Your cinematography took me there and I felt pangs for the East Side.

    Jake, quick question. I saw your videos re:Chamonix, 3 days. I snagged a frequent flier trip to Geneva for mid August. I've tentatively scheduled a week in Chamonix and a week in Zermatt. In view of the recent flooding in the Valais, I'm thinking now about spending the entire 2 weeks day hiking around Mont Blanc. You've spent time doing day hikes, what do you think? Too much time in one region or go with the full 2 weeks out of Chamonix? Thanks! And, keep the videos coming!

    • @jakekaiser1399
      @jakekaiser1399 10 днів тому

      Hey thanks for watching the videos and honestly there is so much to explore in Chamonix if the flooding (which I am clueless on) makes travel in and around Switzerland difficult think you could for sure spend 2 weeks exploring the area. I would make sure to move around a bit to keep it interesting but know from my last trip I had a ton of hikes and things I never got to do based on very limited time. Also if actually circumnavigating Blanc you get a little bit of the different cultural experiences from the different counties and think this would help keep things interesting With that said I've never been to Zermatt and if travel if flooding damage is cleared up by August think a week in each place would be awesome and would love to do this on my trip to the area. In my opinion this whole area of the alps is a mountain paradise and you'll have a great trip either way I hope that helps and have a great trip. I'm jealous and need to plan a return trip and actually climb Blanc this time

    • @jakekaiser1399
      @jakekaiser1399 20 днів тому

      @@MysticUB Thanks for watching and you would for sure need backcountry gear as being able to skin on the way up is essential. I don't recall the timing on this one but expect the climb was about 2 hours based on vert. In terms of renting gear I'm not sure what options exist but do want to share that this line and the CO backcountry in general is very dangerous and without the experience and knowledge on how to assess snowpack would not recommend going. This line has killed a number of skiers and is not only a cool line but a massive avalanche path. What is not shown in the video is my waiting for the perfect day, talking with people in the area who had dug pits on similar aspects, and many years of backcountry experience that led to the decision to ski on this day. I don't want to rain on your parade and hope you get a chance to ski this line but would be a bad steward of this sport not to emphasize the risks and would personally not consider looking at Buffalo without some backcountry experience and education like an AIRE1 avy course. Overall backcountry skiing is vastly different from resort skiing and requires many different skills. For anyone interested in skiing lines like these would implore you to do it correctly and start with the educational base that will keep you alive while enjoying these lines and mountains. I hope this helps

They are not the most beefy so tend to keep lighter things in my roofbox to reduce the load on them but for the like $90 I paid have have had no issues and find them pretty minimal looking for when my roofbox is not in use. @jakekaiser1399 29 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and I got the Navis Freebird due to hearing how well it did in not perfect conditions and how trustworthy it felt. After 1.5 years riding them almost exclusively have found they lived up to the hype and they have been a great single ski quiver for myself in Colorado. The more classic camber profile has been great in steeper terrain and I found these the most solid feeling backcountry designed ski I've used across various conditions. The cons I've noticed is that the tail stability is lacking for landing small jumps/cliffs and that for really deep snow a bit more rocker and width would be nice. Overall they have been a great ski for me and although not the lightest seem to have struck a great balance for performance vs. weight. Best of luck in your ski search!
