Skiing Rocky Mountain National Park // Dragontail & Dead Elk Couloir

- This is my back country ski adventure partially up Dragontail and Dead Elk Couloir in Rocky Mountain National Park in the middle of February 2023.
This is the start of a lot some awesome lines this spring and follow along for more Colorado ski touring videos.
Draontail and Dead Elk Couloir are right above dream lake and can be accessed from the Bear Lake trailhead. I didn't get all the way up either Couloir due to conditions and being conservative with snowpack being solo in non spring conditions but am sure I will be back for a lot more ski mountaineering adventures.

New found dream of mine. I've known about it for a while now and I only have about 40 days on skis.
Hoping to get 70 more this year and start with real mellow backcountry in rmnp next year after I get my aiare 1(2 if I can).
Thanks for posting this for others like me to see!
Best of luck with the journey and with aiare 1 and focus on skiing a lot am sure you'll be out shredding RMNP in no time.
When do you plan on going next time? I always hear/read that springtime is safest to climb the couloir but never any specific months. Would April to May be considered Spring? What factors should I consider besides avalanche data?
There are a lot of factors involved but in general April->June is when these type of lines are generally safest. Every year is different and I will be paying attention to avy report , temperatures, and aspect (sun loading) of a given line.
These types of lines are generally best skied in the spring melt /freeze cycle and warming of the snowpack can be the biggest danger so in general will look for days where the snow has been fully freezing at nights (and the nights before). This allows for easy travel and a more stable snowpack. The ideal way to ski this and similar lines is right as it warms enough to turn the top snow layer to some delicious corn such that the skiing is fun and soft and the snowpack below is still frozen and solid.
Hope this helps but it's hard to be to preceptive with so many factors
