Thank you for sharing your story. im sending a special message for your guest.... 🌷🌹⚘️ the algorithm doesnt allow me to send my personal emoji, a single white rose. I have an hypothesis: once upon a time., there was a singing student at a hs (class of 89). Her teacher, Nicole made a judgement about my voice that wasnt supposed to get back to the student. Because im a weirdo with an highly improbable life, i know that Nicole, as a very green teacher also once said something to you that maybe you were supposed to know or maybe it was said to you directly. I think that Nicole's words, for good or bad, have dictated my uncourageous life descisions because, in my case, i didnt live up to her words in the time frame that the music world dictated. I wonder, podcast guest, and so i chose to prove her wrong. One could argue that, in some ways, her words have driven another former student to prove her wrong with impressive socital success? Funny how 1 teacher can influence the world so profoundly. As a recovering sped teacher and retired BCBA (behavior analyst) and a "late bloomer", it took me until just today to realize the possibility to not change the world, but influence a new direction. I think i have some lived unique insight into the actual mechanisms of neurodivergence and how we grads of our hs are the empirical EVIDENCE of how the sensory integration skills indemic to the creative arts rewires the brain to integrate "lost parts". Im on a mission to document and codify how the practice of the arts are a therapeutic modality that is under: recognized, taught, applied, understood, and funded!! Its time to really, really change things! This is a marshalling call (please God, let me channel Jack D!)..... Too many of our fellow alum have forgotten who they are and that they were meant for "great things" (another voice teacher quote, she isnt with is anymore but I trust she taught me very well). My fellow grads, just my class, ifnwe just got together for coffee and a bullshit session, i bet the world would be 10% better just by applying what we all learned while we were pretending we arent the artists are souls were called to be. If u find this and it speaks to you, find me, reach out, lets have coffee. Lets save the world together, one tiny corner at a time. Lets make ARTS schools THE place to go not to be a musician, dancer, actor, painter, poet; but the place to go to learn the ART of being HUMAN.
OMG doing nothing, I've so much to change! Thanks for sharing this wonderful conversation!
One of the most authentic conversations between parents x experts ive watched on youtube.
My takeaways from this interview have been: 1. Organisations need to build a more courageous community 2. Organisations need to understand that vocalising a shared experience can be important for assisting with anxiety strategies 3. My favourite - “making it safe to learn in public” : When Dr. Brooks spoke about leaders needing to reduce their “name, shame, blame” game it got me thinking. The punitive power in shame culture is a double edged sword because it impacts an employee’s sense of self (intrapersonal consequence) and they stagnate in embarrassment (interpersonal consequence). The impacted employee may become labelled as an agent of disrepute for a while before they feel ready to perform or be productive again-shame does nothing for an organisation but give that leader an "ego boost". BUT what if as Dr. Brooks said we “make it safe to learn in public”. What if “consequential shame culture” was not the default approach leaders give to someone who did not make a wise decision. Leaders could create a space where they themselves could feel relief in acknowledging their own mistakes in addressing others’ mistakes. Leaders could create an environment where recovery from a mistake was quicker because learning culture was the default response not shame culture. This was my learning today Thank you Dr. Marc and Dr. Brooks for another helpful video
Thanks Mark and Heidi, I think mental health is more and more of an upcoming field in leadership. I think it is a very good point in how we seem to be so individualistic and up missing out on opportunities to help each other and be leaders and there for each other even in non-leadership roles. I also would like to add in my own 2 cents: A lot of people don’t realize the holidays can be really hard because people are lucky to have families. With the holiday coming up and discussing mental health, it is really important to watch out for it since right now a lot of people really are alone and forgotten.
Thank you for sharing your perspective and for tuning in! You're absolutely right-mental health is increasingly essential in leadership, and it’s important that we remember leadership isn’t just about formal roles. Every one of us can step up and be there for each other, even in small ways. Your point about the holidays is especially important-while many find comfort in family during this time, it can also be a period of isolation for others. Being mindful of those who may be struggling and offering support can make all the difference.
I'd be curious to know what to do when others don't listen. I'm not like you or Dr.Alfiee and don''t have parents that listen or really anyone in my circle. It was a pattern I recognized a few years ago and it was isolating and explained so much. I ended up moving across the country and somehow the ability to meet new people has helped but it's been a year and it's hard to just recreate a new circle especially at a time when so many isolate.
duff is great but the interviewer looks like a cartoon lol
Thanks for the great lesson it was really good 😊
I LOVE YOU
With AI good luck with this.
Loved the talk - so real! Also shocked to hear you’re 53. I thought you were in your 30s. ;) thanks for sharing your wisdom.
This was such a wonderful discussion. Thank you for having this really important conversation and continuing to advocate for a cultural change around emotional learning. Just ordered Jessi's book and looking forward to reading. Anticipating that it will resonate with me as a practicing pediatrician, friend, mother, spouse, daughter, and just as a fellow human navigating the challenges life brings. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for tuning in🙏 The more we can share knowledge and emotional literacy, the more impact we can have in creating positive changes in our communities and beyond.
A-
Our brains should not be dealing with this amount of envy, with so much of social comparison. This was such a helpful episode for me. Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Marc and Dr. Haidt for a helpful episode. Happy season 2 is here! My thoughts after this video: -Lessons on how quick dopamine and slow dopamine stimulants can impact the mind is important to teach adults so they could teach this to their kids, students, friends etc. -Asking ourselves how much of "envy" we want to consume per day is fascinating. Like an envy meter that we are personally conscious of. This emotion is common during doom scrolling episodes. Maybe there should be an added space in the how we feel app for social media usage or digital media usage... a separate measure we use to monitor the amount of 'envy' we consumed for the day. -The reality of "quick fix" SEL is very interesting and something to think about for the improvement of SEL training during pre-service teacher education or SEL teacher workshops. -The reality of implementing "delayed smartphone use" and the challenges that come with this implementation is something we experience here in South Africa too. A home can have limitations and boundaries for smart phone use but the broader family, friend group or school space can undo all of that hard home work on phone usage. So you guys saying that this is part of a collective action effort was something i could talk about to my colleagues, students and next year's SEL day audience. I would love to talk about this at my next SEL event. Thank you for sharing this concept. - The policy about phones in schools i think needs to be deliberated, documented and enforced. It is the only way kids can be kids and feel their bodies growing, make new friends and as you guys said hear laughter in the hallways.
❤
Hi, thanks for sharing all this information. Talking about differences in culture, here in Germany kids walk or bike to school alone from first grade.
Thank you for joining the conversation. It’s a reminder of the importance of supporting kids in developing emotional regulation and self-confidence from an early age, no matter where they are in the world. ❤🗺
Hi Dr. Brackett, I learned about you through your episode on the huberman lab podcast (where I also watched the episode with Dr. Jonathon Haidt). I just wanted to say that I’ve been going through my own personal self improvement reflection process at 21 ever since some major traumatic abuse events, I love the tips you share through your ruler method about labeling, understand and regulating your emotions and i loved the idea of teaching emotional intelligence in our schools from a young age, I know I would have benefitted from it immensely as well as my friends and students my age, while it’s hard to express all my feelings through the comments section on youtube, I hope this message reaches you and perhaps makes your day. I’m in the process right now of reading your book and I absolutely love your ideas and teachings, it helps me connect with myself and other peoples emotions and helps me to validate and legitimize others emotions. Would love it if you put this webcast in the form of a podcast on spotify!! Would really love to listen to all these intellectual conversations and learn and absorb new information and ideas while walking or driving to class!! Thank you for all the impact you are making on the world, our young generation and emotional intelligence
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful reflection. I'm glad the tools we discuss can support you in connecting with yourself and others in a meaningful way. I hope your message encourages others to reflect on their own emotional well-being as well.
Unicorns and rainbows, getting rid of phones will not stop the added dangers of school mass shootings. Independance norms need adjusting from when we were kids too.
So insightful. Thanks so much!
I will yell less at my kids
Emotional self awareness. I'm working twice a day with your app. It is really helpful to deal with my anxiety
I am trying to help young children learn these skills through my youtube series "Daisy Bees" do you have any tips for helping children understand these concepts? Is there an ideal age in which we start teaching these skills? My theory is the sooner the better but would love your take!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for tuning in!
Ears open, parents !

Another fantastic discussion. Thank you Marc and Rich.
Thank you very much. I just bought your book. Love the part about the strategies for different feelings. For me this is the most difficult part. Thanks once more for your work and greetings from Poland
For some reason hearing Duff talk simply calms me and comforts me. So much insights on life and human resilience just flowing out like a clear stream… He is truly a beautiful human being, and thank you for conducting this interview!
