This brief focus on a specific strategy is so helpful. The analogy of the clouds is my go to when I need a reminder of the impermanence of my feelings. I just need to look to the sky and know that like the clouds my feelings are always shifting and that this feeling shall pass.
I'm glad to hear that you found the focus on the impermanence strategy helpful! The analogy of the clouds is indeed a powerful reminder of the ever-shifting nature of our feelings.
Hi marc! sending you a warm hug from south korea where a big fan of you like me live. i've read your book and watched many video. I may not say that I know how to deal with feelings, but i am in learning how to deal with it. thank you for giving me the moment to embrace and accept my feeling as it is! I notice that it is similar with buddist meditation which says that all of unpleasant feelings come and go, all I have to do is just watch it without correcting it or judging it, leave them alone.
Sending a warm hug right back at you! I'm deeply touched by your kind words and thrilled to hear that you've been exploring the world of emotions through my book and videos. Allowing ourselves to observe and accept our feelings without judgment is a powerful practice, and it sounds like you're navigating that path beautifully. Thank you for joining the conversation
Hi Marc! Thank you for all your content and knowledge. I just started to educate myself on the emotional intelligence topic and have a little confusion about different concepts. When you asked in the video to recall an uncomfortable or difficult emotion, I inmediately leaned towards remembering my thoughts. Thought that appeared on my mind and that made me feel uncomfortable. However I found it harder to attach an emotion to that thought. Any comments? Thank you =)
I find this very helpful and appreciate your work! I look forward to incorporating this in my yoga practice as well as my work life! Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words and for being open to using this strategy in your daily life.🙏
I find the impermanence strategy both interesting and useful.
Firstly, it’s interesting for me because I am used to impermanent feelings of stress and worry because as a grad student I am tested daily. Then, as a performer I feel the same emotions during auditions, the feelings then go up a notch by waiting for audition results. As someone living in a developing nation, I have grown accustomed to the fight or flight response. So I am familiar with the emotions of stress, fear and worry, I have learnt to accept them due to the repetition of these emotions in my life.
Secondly, I find this exercise is useful because it DOESN’T matter how often I experience stress, fear and worry, the fact is, when it happens it’s still robust, intoxicating and distracting from other aspects of my life.
In concluding my response, having acceptance and familiarity with an emotion doesn’t produce an effective coping mechanism. Sitting down and doing the emotional work in those heightened states does. It allows me to reflect on the “why is this happening” and if I know the why, I can name it, tame it and do more with my time.
I appreciate your emphasis on the importance of doing emotional work during those heightened states. Taking the time to reflect on the "why" behind these emotions empowers you to name and tame them.
Keep in mind that this reflective process is at the core of emotional intelligence. It allows for a deeper understanding of oneself, which in turn, can lead to more effective coping strategies and ultimately, a more fulfilling and balanced life.
Thank you for sharing your journey, and I hope that you continue to find value and empowerment in the emotional work you're undertaking. It's a lifelong process, but one that is incredibly rewarding.🙏
