This is a wonderful strategy to put big feelings into perspective. I like to apply the rule of 5's here. Stop and ask yourself, "Will this matter in 5 minutes, 5 weeks, 5 months, 5 years, 50 years?" Thanks Marc.

Solomon's paradox concept, and the temporal distancing strategy is extremely helpful to know but remembering to practice is not easy when in the moment(s) of the emotion(s). What are a couple of tips for remembering the strategy when deep into the strong emotional experience? And is this a daily practice, how does this become almost a default way, and should it be a default to always deal with strong emotions? Thank you so kindly!

Thank you Dr. Marc for another strategy shared! I think distancing sounds like a strategy for the very alert and very conscious person.
The strategy sounds like it is for someone who has the mental fortitude and emotional intelligence to think about the future purpose or impact of the current event all whilst experiencing the rising pain/anger or heightened excitement/pleasure.
It sounds very difficult but I am going to give it a try.

Remember, it's perfectly okay to start small and to remember that this, like any emotional strategy, is a practice-not something we have to perfect overnight. Thank you for your willingness to engage with these strategies, and I'm eager to hear how your journey goes.
