Nearly 3,000 hours in C.K. 2 for me and I’ve got 3 and prefer 2 as of today. Sept. 2024.

I got into Hoi4 first and learned it decently well through mp, same with stellaris. But Eu4 for me was incredibly gruesome, i got rolled in singleplayer by the A.I for the first 200 hours and every run was so difficult i thought I was never gonna get over the threshold. But looking back, now 2k hours in Eu4 and it's my favorite of all the paradox games.

The real question here is "is CK3 worth it in 2024?" And I think the clear answer is "no", since CK2 is where all the fun is at.

The price increase on DLC have not delivered on better content even if they want to cry it funds free patches. No matter if you change to have patience and understand the game evolves overtime to be better will never fix paying more now for less content. I think ck3 really shows the problem with current Paradox where they want $30 USD what is expansion level pricing to bring less than expansion level content. Then to make matters worse the time in between content is very large and they seem to be honestly really really missing the ball here with every single release of DLC with CK3. I think Royal Court might be the biggest letdown from PDX I've ever had with the development time put into it. I just stopped paying for the CK3 DLC, I am hopeful for Roads to Power to be an new leaf or what starts to allow for the game to live up to its potential. CK2 didn't launch in the way it is now, but overtime it was easier to accept the build up at least because the DLC didn't seem to miss the ball, and was once again reasonable price for what it was delivering.

Short answer - Yes. Long answer - 100% definitely Yes.

I don't think expecting features from the previous game to be included in the new game is by any means an unrealistic expectation. Yes, a lot of these additions came later in the development of the previous game, but that does not justify leaving that content out in the game's sequel. Imagine if EU5 launches without the ability to swap the occupation of a province, a feature that came in the Art of War DLC.

The biggest pet peeve for developers is that when making a next installment they refuse to implement the dlc from the previous game for greedy reasons. The real work was already done, just fit it in! Its the number one reason the Sims is a dead franchise to me. Its not worth buying the game for slightly better looking pictures. Continue to add, never take away without replacing with something else.

The biggest issue for me is that CK3 just feels way too streamlined. I understand that this was likely needed for the game to achieve the mainstream success that it has, but personally I just get rather bored when all thats really required to build a massive empire is clicking a couple buttons without too much forethought.

Thanks, I needed a video like this. My friends tell me to play Victoria 3 and EU4 while science fiction fan me wanted to try Stellaris (although I also consider myself a history buff). I think I'll go Stellaris, Victoria 3 and EU4, in that order.

I've played Paradox's games for 10+ years. I've been kinda addicted to the games and moddability, it gave me hubris! Nice essay, I never thought that these games were like playing with crayons 😂 btw I always preferred political maps rather then geographical ones

the difference (i hope) with EU5 is 1) its been in development for 4 or 5 years, 2) it seems to have been worked on by key modders in the community. these things should hopefully mean we're not having a rerun of vic 3, imperator etc.

Im fine with new iterations having “less content” if its trying something new. I played a lot of ck2 and ck3 and they feel very differently to each other with similar mechanics working differently, creating two different games.

Yeah i tried CK3 a few days ago and just thought it was far too easy.. Even in base game CK2 you could get screwed over early.. CK3 is far more forgiving and it makes things not matter as much since you can wiggle out of just about anything.. CK3 also had me winning alot of battles i probably shouldn't have.. CK3 just plays itself basically and i don't like it

They could have added some of the DLCs we had in CK2 as part of the base game for CK3, I think it is greedy of them to release all the same DLCs over and over. I am still playing CK2, I have CK3, but I barely touched it in four years.

Honestly, NOT calling it EU5 might do more for expectations that anything else.

Pretty much every poorly received game and even some successes like EU4 have this issue in which stuff that pretty much EVERYONE and their mother know that stuff that should be core mechanics included in the base game are split out to force people into buying the DLCs. Is almost universally agreed that EU4 is near unplayable without Art of War, for example.

It's true that base vic2 has very little to none of content but what makes the game more enjoyable to me is that hpm and other mods really make the game go to the right way of fun and not like vic3s

Paradox's DLC pattern is pretty much just EA's DLC pattern for the Sims, but grand strategy. And I LIKE grand strategy, so I enjoy them... but let's not pretend like it's some kind of consumer friendly practice.

i rather have new games then dlc, dlcs are bad for video games & they need to just go. the game needs to be done when it comes out & for eu5, just simply have ALL the features from eu4 & not have it barebones. thats is better & needs to be done. & finally no Vicky3 sucks ass & is not better then vicky2

Yes, the changes to culture in CK3 are a big plus. I wish something similar existed for religion. It's not quite as malleable since the only way to deal with a different religion is to stamp it out. Having osmosis within religions too would be cool. I also wish there were more character interaction with foreign rulers. Sending envoys/diplomats or visiting them to negotiate relations/trade would be fun.

I mean, CK3 doesn't yet have the runtime that CK2 had when it became a really complete game. We'll see going forward if they shit the bed or not. For now I'd say they only fucked up like 3 dlcs at most.

Ck3 is by far the better game if only based on release. If, somewhat unfairly, you include all DLCs then there is no contest: CK2 is the better and cheaper game.

Funny is that you bring EU4 on the table. EU4 was fun at the very beginning and then they started to bring in mechanics that nobody asked for. But to create the need to buy these DLCs, PDX stole content from the base game and therefore the base game became less and less fun to play. And on top, the new content wasn't just half as good as the former base game, they almost deactivated most new functions. And the worst came true, after PDX went on stock market, because back then they started not only selling less content for more money, they also started to destroy the game. And while everybody hoped for Emperor DLC to be the final DLC to fix the mess they've created, they started going wild and went absurd. And what PDX was famous for ist Grand Strategy Games and not just "map games" as you call it. But the delivered content for 8 years now lack everything that a strategy game needs and on top they started to destroy the strategy part from they game as soon as they started with mission trees (what is the exact oposite of a strategy), just because it was and still is easy to sell. And on Top, you have to pay for the latest DLCs to get back the exact same mission trees you already paid for in the last DLCs, so they are selling the exact same content AGAIN!

The in-game guide for CK2 is very vague and I couldn't learn much from it. The tutorials on UA-cam also aren't as good as they should be for teaching the game. Do you know any methods that can help me learn CK2's complex mechanics more easily and quickly?
