Paradox ought to give this a lifeline, it is fundamentally sound game that was just released too shallow and too unpolished. It possesses many mechanics, ideas, scope, a wonderful map, with arguably Paradox’s finest soundtrack, which deserves much credit! I hope creators can really get behind Laith’s efforts to get Rome Resuscitated!
Admittedly, I've only played this game with the Invictus mod, as that mod is essentially the spiritual development to the game itself, but Imperator is soooo much fun to learn. My favorite feature is how city-building can take place *anywhere*; any tile can be developed into a major city so you don't have to play toward preconceived expectations of where development should occur (there are no instinctive historical buffs like building slots seen in something like Crusader Kings). The only thing I just can't seem to wrap my head around in Imperator is technology development. The tech tree is confusing and I don't like looking at it. I don't know where certain buffs or mechanics are found in it, so crucial technologies can be lost in the mud. I also found some stress in the growth of everyone else. I tried an Aquitaine run, but both Rome and my surrounding proto-French and Iberian neighbors were constantly blobbing as fast or faster than me. The "tall" kingdom I wanted to play around the Bay of Biscay seemed doomed to either blob as well, or get eaten. I still want to be clear though: Imperator is an excellent game and there is so much fun to be had playing it. It's a massive "What If" thinking about where it would be today had official development continued.
Great thoughts! And yes I agree, tech development can be a bit confusing since there are different windows etc, and the developments don't necessarily feel intuitive straight off the bat when following the different lines. Still I think it's an interesting concept, and you do feel an actual difference when unlocking many of the techs, which is what I value the most, I think.
i advise you realistsic tribes mod, it makes it so that tribes like historicaly dont just go and blob(while also making themselves acutally weaker) so you could play tall and build a defensive pact that should keep you safe from rome and other would be empires
Wow! I’ve been thinking a lot about buying this game and your comment has given a lot of insight into this game. I’m really deciding whether to buy CK3 or imperator, and seeing your comment has made me really excited to try it out, I hope the technology tree and tall gameplay can be improved somehow with a mod or something but seeing the overall great experience that it is, I can’t wait!
@@TopShot501st I never played it on release due to the terrible reviews. I picked it up at about the 1.4 patch and found it be a good game. I still can't believe Paradox went from developing the best combat system to the monstrosity in Vic3. Obviously warfare was vastly different in both eras, but the automation in Rome is so enjoyable without robbing you of that sense of control and understanding of what is happening during a war. I hope they bring it back for EUV.
Vic 3 is not a monstruosity, it's just not a priority. There isn't something wrong with it, just there isn't much of a system at all. And I sincerely do not care, I like playing with economy on vic 3. If I want war I can go play hoi4

I think as proof of concept it was a great game, handled a little roughly when it first came out. But in the long run will lead to innovation and hopefully some course correction for Paradox on the whole. An easy 8/10 as the game sits now.
Yeah, 8/10 is something I agree with, although I would add that I think the game truly does have that "secret spice" that elevates it depending on your tastes.

the smart modders manage to link Crusader King 3 with Attila Total war - and play the battles inside Attila Total war. Imagine if they would manage to actually link Imperator - with Rome2 Total war or Attila TW conversion to Rome2 TW. You could fight real battles from Rome2 TW but campaign in complex map of Imperator! I would surely play it!
I loved Imperator Rome. I did prefer the standing armies you raise (EU4 style) over the recent call-up army changes but overall I thought it was a great game. Issue is that Paradox style doesn't fit the era as well as Total War or other titles IMO. Often, armies won due to their tactics and not numbers. Especially during this era. I love the CK feel but it solves my main headache about succession which isn't that great in CK. I would rather follow the nation than the family.
Btw is there Christianity in the game? Or an event about the birth of Jesus? Got the game last week and planning to start a run as Rome when i got available time
No that's the sad part, the game basically officially ends in like 27BC or in the very early ADs, it's basically supposed to end when the Empire formally begins, which sucks, but I believe if you play with either the Invictus or Terra Indomita, they either directly incorporate Christianity towards the end, or they have submods for it!
After very much Steam forum research on my part, it appears to me that general consensus seems to be that even with the 2.0 patch, for most people IR still is not secretly the perfect Paradox game.
this games AI is so bad though. I gave rome AI an infinite amount of gold and a boost larger than the highest difficulty and yet they could barely get out of italy. I had no lategame opponent :-(
No, it is not. Believe Hoi3 was their opus magnums. As for this era I prefer Field of Glory Empire, that gave all that were missing here. Simplicity and complexity at the same time, good surroundings anf atmosphere diving. Just enjoing and roleplaying. Everything that goes is very similar to the historical notes. There could not appear from nowhere, like in missions. Paradox game is mostly about task doing and figures, figures, figures... Sometimes percents. FOG is more about atmosphere and representation of epoch. In paradox for some action they didn't put the atmospheric description, only how points will add and how much will go. Wierd.
